61. An Acid-Based Method for Highly Effective Baddeleyite Separation from Gram-Sized Mafic Rocks

Abstract

Dating mafic igneous rocks (silica-undersaturated) is difficult for the lack of suitable minerals such as zircons (ZrSiO4) commonly found in the sialic rocks such as granites. In this regard, baddeleyite (ZrO2) has been long recognized as the most important mineral to serve as a geochronometer for dating silica-undersaturated igneous rocks. However, separating baddeleyite is difficult due to its small grain size, typical tabular morphology, and low abundance in samples. The standard water-based separation technique requires kilogram-sized samples and usually has a very low recovery rate. In this study, a new separation method based on the different solubilities of the minerals within HF + HCl + HNO3 reagents was developed to achieve a high recovery of baddeleyite. With ∼19 g of diabase powder, the new method recovers 150-160 baddeleyite grains of 10-100 μm length and 4-50 μm width, an order of magnitude improvement over the water-based separation method, which typically recovers 11-12 similarly sized baddeleyite grains out of the ∼19 g sample. Subsequent secondary ion mass spectrometry U-Pb analyses demonstrate that the baddeleyite grains recovered by the new separation method keep the U-Pb system closed, indicating no Pb loss during acid treatment. Thus, this new method enables the most efficient baddeleyite recovery from gram-sized rocks and is anticipated to greatly contribute to the geochronological study of silica-unsaturated mafic rocks.

Abstract

Abstract The short-lived radionuclide aluminium-26 (26Al) isotope is a major heat source for early planetary melting. The aluminium-26 – magnesium-26 (26Al-26Mg) decay system also serves as a high-resolution relative chronometer. In both cases, however, it is critical to establish whether 26Al was homogeneously or heterogeneously distributed throughout the solar nebula. Here we report a precise lead-207 – lead-206 (207Pb-206Pb) isotopic age of 4565.56 ± 0.12 million years (Ma) for the andesitic achondrite Erg Chech 002. Our analysis, in conjunction with published 26Al-26Mg data, reveals that the initial 26Al/27Al in the source material of this achondrite was notably higher than in various other well-preserved and precisely dated achondrites. Here we demonstrate that the current data clearly indicate spatial heterogeneity of 26Al by a factor of 3-4 in the precursor molecular cloud or the protoplanetary disk of the Solar System, likely associated with the late infall of stellar materials with freshly synthesized radionuclides.

75. Effect of Different Processing Technologies on the Key Aroma-Active Compounds of Green Tea

Abstract

Green tea was made from one bud with two leaves from the tea cultivar Longjing 43 by stir frying, roasting, steaming or sun drying. Stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) combined with gas chromatography-olfactometry-mass spectrometry (GC-O-MS) was applied to analyze the influence of different manufacturing processes on the key aroma-active compounds of green tea. The results showed that 31, 27, 25 and 30 key aroma-active compounds were respectively identified from stir-fried green tea, roasted green tea, steamed green tea and sun-dried green tea, which all had floral, fruity and green flavors. Totally, 13 key aroma-active compounds were common to these 4 types of green tea, including β-ionone, naphthalene, linalool, linalool oxide I, geraniol, 1-octene-3-ol, 2-heptanone, heptanal, hexanal, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, α-ionone, and phenylethyl alcohol. It was found that β-ocimene and (Z)-hex-3-enyl 2-methylbutyrate contributed greatly to the aroma characteristics of stir-fried green tea; 2-pentylfuran, phenylacetaldehyde and α-terpineol contributed greatly to the aroma characteristics of roasted green tea; and geranylacetone, γ-terpinene and α-citral contributed greatly to the aroma characteristics of sun-dried green tea. The results obtained from this study will help to understand the formation mechanism of green tea aroma quality and to develop directional processing and regulation technologies for green tea aroma quality.

79. Quantum Monte Carlo simulation of the 3D Ising transition on the fuzzy sphere

Abstract

We present a numerical quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for simulating the 3D phase transition on the recently proposed fuzzy sphere [Phys. Rev. X 13, 021009 (2023)]. By introducing an additional SU(2) layer degree of freedom, we reformulate the model into a form suitable for sign-problem-free QMC simulation. From the finite-size-scaling, we show that this QMC-friendly model undergoes a quantum phase transition belonging to the 3D Ising universality class, and at the critical point we compute the scaling dimensions from the state-operator correspondence, which largely agrees with the prediction from the conformal field theory. These results pave the way to construct sign-problem-free models for QMC simulations on the fuzzy sphere, which could advance the future study on more sophisticated criticalities.

Abstract

The microscopic mechanism of ferroelectric switching is the motion of domain walls, which is actually accomplished by the movement of tiny steps on the domain walls. Using first-principles calculations, the detailed polarization structures and the motion barriers of neutral and charged steps on 180° domain walls of prototypical ferroelectrics PbTiO3 are elaborately revealed in this study. While the Bloch components get weakened near all neutral steps, they become weakened/strengthened near the head-to-head/tail-to-tail charged steps. The neutral step possesses a lower formation energy but a higher migration barrier, indicating that the charged step could move faster. Based on these results, the possible motion picture of steps on one 180° domain wall of tetragonal ferroelectrics is proposed, which provides a better understanding of the mechanism of domain wall motion and may shed light on the future development of domain wall–based functional devices. Abstract

Abstract Developmental abnormalities in otoliths can impact growth and survival in teleost fishes. Here, we quantified the frequency and severity of developmental anomalies in otoliths of delta smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), a critically endangered estuarine fish that is endemic to the San Francisco Estuary. Left–right asymmetry and anomalous crystalline polymorphs (i.e., vaterite) were quantified and compared between wild and cultured populations using digital image analysis. Visual estimates of vaterite were validated using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, laser ablation ICPMS, and electron probe microanalysis. Results indicated that cultured delta smelt were 80 times more likely to contain a vateritic otolith and 18 times more likely to contain relatively large (≥ 15%) amounts of vaterite. Similarly, cultured fish exhibited 30% greater asymmetry than wild fish. These results indicate that cultured delta smelt exhibit a significantly higher frequency of vestibular abnormalities which are known to reduce fitness and survival. Such hatchery effects on otolith development could have important implications for captive culture practices and the supplementation of wild fish populations with cultured individuals.
