Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) has a poor clinical outcome, due to a lack of actionable therapeutic targets. Herein we define lysosomal acid lipase A (LIPA) as a viable molecular target in TNBC and identify a stereospecific small molecule (ERX-41) that binds LIPA. ERX-41 induces endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress resulting in cell death, and this effect is on target as evidenced by specific LIPA mutations providing resistance. Importantly, we demonstrate that ERX-41 activity is independent of LIPA lipase function but dependent on its ER localization. Mechanistically, ERX-41 binding of LIPA decreases expression of multiple ER-resident proteins involved in protein folding. This targeted vulnerability has a large therapeutic window, with no adverse effects either on normal mammary epithelial cells or in mice. Our study implicates a targeted strategy for solid tumors, including breast, brain, pancreatic and ovarian, whereby small, orally bioavailable molecules targeting LIPA block protein folding, induce ER stress and result in tumor cell death.

The immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment in some cancer types, such as luminal breast cancer, supports tumor growth and limits therapeutic efficacy. Identifying approaches to induce an immunostimulatory environment could help improve cancer treatment. Here, we demonstrate that inhibition of cancer-intrinsic EZH2 promotes antitumor immunity in estrogen receptor α–positive (ERα+) breast cancer. EZH2 is a component of the polycomb-repressive complex 2 (PRC2) complex, which catalyzes trimethylation of histone H3 at lysine 27 (H3K27me3). A 53-gene PRC2 activity signature was closely associated with the immune responses of ERα+ breast cancer cells. The stimulatory effects of EZH2 inhibition on immune surveillance required specific activation of type I IFN signaling. Integrative analysis of PRC2-repressed genes and genome-wide H3K27me3 landscape revealed that type I IFN ligands are epigenetically silenced by H3K27me3. Notably, the transcription factor STAT2, but not STAT1, mediated the immunostimulatory functions of type I IFN signaling. Following EZH2 inhibition, STAT2 was recruited to the promoters of IFN-stimulated genes even in the absence of the cytokines, suggesting the formation of an autocrine IFN-STAT2 axis. In patients with luminal breast cancer, high levels of EZH2 and low levels of STAT2 were associated with the worst antitumor immune responses. Collectively, this work paves the way for the development of an effective therapeutic strategy that may reverse immunosuppression in cancer.Significance:Inhibition of EZH2 activates a type I IFN-STAT2 signaling axis and provides a therapeutic strategy to stimulate antitumor immunity and therapy responsiveness in immunologically cold luminal breast cancer.

The value of considerable residual energy in waste Li-ion batteries (WLIBs) is always neglected. At present, “this energy” is always wasted during the discharge process of WLIBs. However, if this energy could be reused, it would not only save a lot of energy but also avoid the discharge step of recycling of WLIBs. Unfortunately, the instability of WLIBs potential is a challenge to efficient utilization of this residual energy. Here, we propose a method that could regulate the cathode potential and current of the battery by simply adjusting the solution pH to utilize 35.08%, 88.4%, and 84.7% of the residual energy for removing heavy metal ions from wastewater, removing Cr (VI) from wastewater, and recovering copper from the solution, respectively. By taking advantage of the high internal resistance R of WLIBs and the sudden change of battery current I caused by iron passivation on the positive electrode of the battery, this method could induce the response of overvoltage η (η = IR) inside the battery at different pH levels to regulate the cathode potential µ of the battery to the three intervals. The potential ranges of the battery cathode corresponding to pH < 3.4, pH ≈ 3.4, and pH > 4 were µ > −0.47V, −0.47V < µ < −0.82V, and µ < −0.82V, respectively. This study provides a promising way and theoretical basis for the development of technologies for reusing residual energy in WLIBs.

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have the advantages of stable electrochemical performance and long service life when used as energy storage materials due to their face‒centered cubic structure. Here, Ni‒Co Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nano units have been utilized as precursor to prepare corresponding metal sulfide derivatives, which inherited the structural properties of the precursor. This unique structural exposes more reaction sites and the generation of a small amount of nitrogen-doped carbon that enhances charge transfer. This cube structure has a buffer effect on the stress of the active substance during charging and discharging. The CoS2/Ni3S4‒N‒C provides a capacitance of 817 C g‒1 at 3 A g‒1 and there is still 556 C g‒1 at 20 A g‒1. Furthermore, CoS2/Ni3S4‒N‒C electrode yields outstanding cycle stability (98.2% capacitance retention at 10,000 cycles). An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device consisting of CoS2/ Ni3S4‒N‒C and activated carbon electrodes have an energy density of 40 Wh kg‒1, and a retention rate of 103.7% for 10,000 cycles at 10 A g‒1, presenting excellent cycle stability. The electron properties of Co2NiO4 and CoS2/Ni3S4 − N−C are compared by density functional theory (DFT). CoS2/Ni3S4 − N−C detects more DOS near the Fermi level, leading to larger charge accumulation, indicating that the electron conductivity of the heterojunction is much higher than that of the oxide, and eventually faster reaction kinetics can be obtained.

B cells promote tumor development in murine models of breast cancer (BCa), including - as we have shown - by producing pleiotropic cytokine IL-27, which upregulates expression of the PD-L1 immune checkpoint in BCa cells and tumor-infiltrating B cells (TIL-Bs). Paradoxically, B cell activation has been shown to predict the positive response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) by murine BCa tumors and melanoma, sarcoma and kidney cancer in patients. Here, we have addressed the role of B cell-expressed PD-L1 in BCa development and responses to ICIs by generating conditional knockout (KO) mice in which Cd274 (encoding PD-L1) was ablated only in activated B cells (AicdacreCd274fl/fl). Tumor development in AicdacreCd274fl/fl mice from engrafted syngeneic ER+ E0071 BCa cells was significantly delayed, albeit not abolished (as occurring in mice lacking B cells), in association with increased B-cell expression of CD86, a key agonistic ligand for T cell-expressed CD28, a co-stimulatory receptor whose function is inhibited by the PD-L1/PD-1 immune checkpoint in exhausted tumor-infiltrating CD8+ T cells. The heightened B-cell CD86 expression in AicdacreCd274fl/fl mice was recapitulated in AicdacreCd274fl/fl B cells stimulated in vitro by CD154, a T helper cell stimulus critical for B cell activation and differentiation as well as the antibody response. Accordingly, AicdacreCd274fl/fl mice displayed an increased antibody response to a T-dependent antigen. Likewise, treatment with the anti-PD-L1 (αPD-L1) ICI boosted wildtype B cells stimulated with CD154 in vitro to express CD86 and differentiate into potentiated plasma cells. It also effectively regressed the growth of pre-developed E0071 tumor in C57 and AicdacreCd274+/fl mice by rejuvenating tumor-infiltrating CD8+ T cells, likely through activation of previously dampened CD28 signaling. By contrast, residual tumors that had eventually developed in AicdacreCd274fl/fl mice failed to respond to αPD-L1 and continued to grow at a pace comparable to tumors treated with an isotype-matched control antibody, showing that the full anti-tumor efficacy of αPD-L1 was mediated mainly by PD-L1-expressing B cells, but not other immune cell types. Thus, PD-L1+ TIL-Bs use PD-L1 to impose a “brake” on the host anti-tumor activity, but are directly targeted by αPD-L1 to relieve the brake, “jump-start” the CD86:CD28 signaling and potentiate the anti-tumor response, thereby providing a mechanistic explanation for the opposing roles of B cells in murine BCa development and ICI responses. Our findings also provide a strong rationale to investigate the activation of PD-L1-expressing TIL-Bs by Atezolizumab® (αPD-L1) in BCa patients to underpin the patient response to this ICI. In this study, the distribution of precious metals in waste printed circuit boards was investigated and the economic value of recycling was assessed. Contacts of pins, slots, interfaces and the board surface in waste printed circuit boards were analyzed, and three types of precious metals were detected. The content of gold, silver and palladium ranged from 179.86 mg/kg to 3694.51 mg/kg, 809 mg/kg to 12320.51 mg/kg and 96.25 mg/kg to 117.49 mg/kg, respectively. Gold was distributed wildly in contacts of many slots and all interfaces, while contacts of only two interfaces (the cable and USB) contained palladium. The highest content of Au was found in contacts of the cable. Silver mainly concentrated on pins (metal foil contacts) of electronic components and its highest content was found in microchips. The economic value of recyclable precious metals in 1 t waste printed circuit boards was up to 2292.94 dollars, of which Au contributed 98%. This study indicates the prominent economic benefits of precious metal recovery from waste printed circuit boards. Moreover, the scientific information provide guidance for the directional and accurate recovery of precious metals from waste printed circuit boards.

Sulfide-based glasses and glass-ceramics showing high ionic conductivities and excellent mechanical properties are considered as promising solid-state electrolytes. Nowadays, the computational material techniques with the advantage of low research cost are being widely utilized for understanding, effectively screening and discovering of battery materials. In consideration of the rising importance and contributions of computational studying on the glassy SSE materials, here, this work summarizes the common computational methods utilized for studying the amorphous inorganic materials, review the recent progress in computational investigations of the lithium and sodium sulfide-type glasses for solid-state batteries, and outlines our understandings of the challenges and future perspective on them. This review would facilitate and accelerate the future computational screening and discovering more glassy-state SSE materials for the solid-state batteries.

Through direct shear tests, this paper aimed to research the effect of fine marble aggregate on the shear strength and fractal dimension of the interface between soil and concrete corroded by sulfuric acid. More realistic concrete rough surfaces than the artificially roughened surfaces were formed by immersing four concrete plates in plastic buckets filled with sulfuric acid for different periods of time. The sand was adopted to imitate the soil. 3D laser scanner was employed to obtain the digital shapes of concrete plates subjected to sulfuric acid, and the rough surfaces were evaluated by fractal dimension. Large direct shear experiments were performed to obtain the curves of the interface shear stress and shear displacement between sand and corroded concrete plate. The method of data fitting was adopted to calculate the parameters of shear strength (i.e., friction angle and the cohesive) and the parameters of the Clough–Duncan hyperbolic model. The results indicated that as the corrosion days increased, the surface of the concrete plate became rougher, the surface fractal dimensions of the concrete corroded by sulfuric acid became bigger, and the interface friction angle became greater. The friction angle of the interface and the fractal dimensions of the surface of the concrete plate containing crushed gravel and marble sand were smaller than that of the concrete plate containing crushed gravel and river sand.

The high interfacial resistance and lithium (Li) dendrite growth are two major challenges for solid-state Li batteries (SSLBs). The lack of understanding on the correlations between electronic conductivity and Li dendrite formation limits the success of SSLBs. Here, by diluting the electronic conductor from the interphase to bulk Li during annealing of the aluminium nitride (AlN) interlayer, we changed the interphase from mixed ionic/electronic conductive to solely ionic conductive, and from lithiophilic to lithiophobic to fundamentally understand the correlation among electronic conductivity, Li dendrite, and interfacial resistance. During the conversion-alloy reaction between AlN and Li, the lithiophilic and electronic conductive Li x Al diffused into Li, forming a compact lithiophobic and ionic conductive Li 3 N, which achieved an ultrahigh critical current density of 2.6/14.0 mA/cm 2 in the time/capacity-constant mode, respectively. The fundamental understanding on the effect of interphase nature on interfacial resistance and Li dendrite suppression will provide guidelines for designing high-performance SSLBs.

Sulfide-based lithium superionic conductors often show higher Li-ion conductivity than other types of electrolyte materials. This work unveils a unique Li-ion conductive behavior in these materials through the perspective of anharmonic coupling assisted Li-ion diffusion. Li hopping events can happen simultaneously with various types of lattice dynamics, while only a statistically important synchronization of motions may indicate coupling. This method enables a direct evaluation of the coupling strength between these motions, which more fundamentally decides if a specific type of lattice motion is really anharmonically coupled to the Li hopping event and whether the coupling can facilitate the Li diffusion. By a new ab initio computational approach, this work unveils a unique phenomenon in prototype sulfide electrolytes in comparison with typical halide ones, that Li-ion conduction can be boosted by the anharmonic coupling of low-frequency Li phonon modes with high-frequency anion stretching or flexing phonon modes, rather than the low-frequency rotational modes. The coupling pushes Li ions toward the diffusion channels for reduced diffusion barriers. The result from the lower temperature range (≈0-300 K) of simulation can also be more relevant to the application of solid-state batteries.

Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) play a critical role in type 2 immunity. Although their classical activators are known to be host epithelial-derived alarmin cytokines released from tissue damage at barrier sites during microbial infections and allergen exposures, it remains elusive whether ILC2 cells can be directly activated by microbial ligands. Here we examined a number of microbial ligands and identified lipopolysaccharides (LPS) from multiple species of Gram-negative bacteria potently stimulated the cultured human ILC2 to proliferate and produce massive amounts of type 2 effector cytokines IL-5 and IL-13. RNA-seq data revealed a remarkably similar set of type 2 immune responsive genes induced by LPS and IL-33. However, blocking IL-33 receptor signaling failed to decrease the effects of LPS. In contrast, blocking TLR4 receptor, NF-kB and JAK pathways completely abolished the growth and function of LPS-treated human ILC2. Furthermore, ILC2 cells of TLR4 deficient mice were unable to respond to LPS treatment in vitro and in vivo. Importantly, patients with allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis and bacteremia had an increased number of peripheral blood ILC2 cells that correlated with elevated serum endotoxin. Collectively, these findings support a non-canonical mode of direct activation of human ILC2 cells via the LPS-TLR4-NF-kB/JAK signaling axis, which is independent of the classical IL-33-ST2 pathway. Thus, targeting TLR4 signaling pathway might be developed as an alternative approach to treat microbial infection-associated and ILC2-mediated inflammatory conditions.

High-voltage cathodes with high power and stable cyclability are needed for future high-performance sodium-ion batteries. However, the low electronic conductivity and poor capacity retention impede the development of Mn-rich phosphate cathodes. Here, a light-weight F doping strategy is reported to modify high-voltage Na4MnCr(PO4)3 cathodes. The light-weight F dopant could decrease the energy gap to 0.22 eV from 1.52 eV and strengthen the adjacent chemical bonding around Mn as confirmed by density functional theory calculations, which ensure the boosted electronic conductivity and suppress Mn dissolution. The combination of in-situ and ex-situ techniques determine that the F dopant has no influence on the Na+ storage mechanisms. As a result, an outstanding rate performance up to 40 C and an improved cycling stability (1000 cycles at 20 C) are thus achieved (best reported performances until now). This work presents an unusual and widely available light-weight anion doping strategy for high-performance polyanionic cathodes.

Background: Ovarian cancer (OCa) is the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers in the United States. Despite initial response to chemotherapy, most OCa patients become chemo resistant and progress to metastatic disease. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the high basal level of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) in OCa represents a critical vulnerability and drugs that further aggravate this already engaged system in OCa may exhaust its protective features and contribute to apoptosis induction. The objective of this proposal is to identify a hit compound that enhances ERS in OCa and to conduct mechanistic studies. Methods: We synthesized a small library of >200 chemically distinct oligobenzamide analogs with maintenance of the chemical backbone but altered R groups of ERX-11. We performed the primary screening of this library to evaluate the induction of mRNA levels of two canonical ERS/UPR (unfolded protein response) genes- sXBP1 and CHOP. Biological activity of ERX-208 was validated using multiple OCa cells. Mechanistic studies were conducted using CRISPR/Cas9 KO, Western blotting, reporter gene assays, IHC and RNA-seq analysis. PK (pharmacokinetics) and toxicity studies were done using C57BL/6 mice. Cell line-derived xenografts (CDXs), patient-derived xenografts (PDXs), patient-derived explants (PDEs), and patient-derived organoids (PDO) were used for preclinical evaluation. Results: From a screen of a curated ERX-11 derived oligobenzamide library, we identified a hit compound, ERX-208 that potently (IC50~100nM) induces ERS/UPR and apoptosis in multiple OCa cells in vitro. CRISPR KO screen identified the lysosomal acid lipase A (LIPA) protein as the critical target of ERX-208. LIPA KO abrogates response to ERX-208, while reconstitution of LIPA restores ERX-208 response. The time course studies showed a robust and consistent induction (>15-fold CHOP, and >10-fold sXBP1) by ERX-208 treatment within 24h. We confirmed induction of classic UPR components peIF2α, CHOP and LC3B using Western blotting in multiple OCa cells. Functionally, ERX-208 causes growth inhibition of OCa cells, as noted by MTT cell viability assays using 15 OCa cells with an IC50 of ~50-100nM. The activity of ERX-208 is distinct among oligobenzamides as ERX-11 has limited/no activity against OCa cells. RNA-seq analysis confirmed that ERX-208 induces significant ERS, UPR, and apoptosis. Further, ERX-208 reduced the growth of OCa PDO’s in vitro, PDEs ex vivo and CDXs and PDXs in vivo. ERX-208 treatment did not show any signs of toxicity and body weight of mice was not affected. IHC analyses showed increased activation of ERS/UPR markers such as GRP78, p-PERK and decreased proliferation measured by Ki67. Conclusions: Collectively, our results demonstrated the utility of ERX-208 and will establish a novel therapeutic paradigm in OCa that overcomes tumor heterogeneity by targeting LIPA and enhancing ERS leading to apoptosis. Background: Of all gynecologic cancers, ovarian cancer (OCa) has the highest mortality rates. Nearly 90% of patients who receive standard surgical and cytotoxic treatment experience disease recurrence. Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and its receptor LIFR are implicated in the progression of several cancers. A knowledge gap exists on whether LIF/LIFR plays a role in the evolution of OCa. We recently developed EC359, a first-in-class LIFR inhibitor. Here, we examined whether autocrine loops of LIF/LIFR contribute to OCa progression and tested the utility of EC359 as a potential targeted therapy. Methods: Eighteen different OCa model cells, both established and primary, were used to profile the expression of LIF and LIFR. Cell viability, colony formation, apoptosis, and reporter assays were used to assess EC359 impact on OCa cells. Mechanistic studies were carried out using RNA-seq and RT-qPCR analysis. Using cell-based xenografts, syngeneic xenografts, patient derived organoids (PDO), and patient derived xenograft (PDX) models, the effectiveness of LIFR inhibitor EC359 as a targeted therapy was examined. Results: Kaplan-Meier survival analysis (KMplot) revealed increased expression of LIF and LIFR was linked to poor progression-free survival in OCa patients. The levels of LIF and LIFR were considerably greater in OCa chemotherapy non-responders than responders. We validated the existence of LIF/LIFR autocrine signaling using 18 distinct OCa cells. Treatment with the LIFR inhibitor EC359 dramatically decreased OCa cell viability, cell survival and increased apoptosis, with an IC50 of 5 to 50 nM. The activation of STAT3, mTOR, AKT, and p42/44 MAPKs as well as other downstream LIFR signaling was markedly decreased by EC359 treatment. Treatment with EC359 also decreased the stemness of OCa cells, slowed PDO development, and sensitized chemotherapy-resistant OCa cells to chemotherapy. One of the significant pathways elevated by EC359, according to RNA-seq data, is the regulation of apoptosis. In six different cell-based xenografts and PDX tumors, we demonstrated that the EC359 at 5mg/kg dose significantly reduced the OCa xenograft growth. In comparison to the vehicle control, the tumor volume was significantly reduced by EC359 treatment of murine ID8 xenografts in C57BL6 mice. Our findings indicated that EC359 had both intrinsic and extrinsic effects on tumors. Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) with a significant M1 polarity (CD11b+Gr1-CD68high/phosphoSTAT1+/cMAF-) and robust tumor infiltration by (CD45+) leukocytes were enhanced with EC359 therapy of ID8 xenograft tumors. Importantly, normal T, B, and other immune cells in the blood demonstrated that EC359 had no effect on immune cell homeostasis. Conclusions: Together, our findings support the existence of LIF/LIFR autocrine loops, and EC359 is a viable treatment option for OCa. As a major part of municipal waste, the amount of waste glass has greatly increased. Due to its stable physical and chemical properties, glass can be effectively recycled with very little loss of quality. Meanwhile, recovery of waste glass is considered to be meaningful for saving resources and energy for sustainable development. However, remanufacturing processes always need a higher level of cleaning of waste glass. Traditionally, the combination technology of hydraulic cleaning and semimanual sorting is used to clean the organic and metallic impurities of waste glass. This combination technology has the disadvantages of low efficiency and producing lots of organic wastewater, which causes heavy environmental pollution. This study proposed an environmental-friendly combined recycling system of waste glass. Waterless cleaning, iron removing, eddy current separation, and optical separation were combined to realize the cleaning and sorting of waste glass. The operation parameters of each process of this new system were discussed and optimized. This system contributed to a high-efficiency and environmental-friendly way for the recovering of waste glass in municipal wastes, and it is an engineering practice to upgrade the urban solid waste recycling technology.

Recovering valuable materials from spent lithium-ion batteries is an important task because of the asymmetry in resource distribution, supply, and demand around the world. A lithium-ion battery is a combination system of various elements and their oxides. Current recovering technologies focus on the separation of valuable metal elements. They can inescapably bring secondary contamination and cost to the environment due to the addition of leachants and precipitants. To recover valuable materials, in situ recombination of elements in spent lithium-ion batteries can be a more economical and environment-friendly solution. Herein, we developed a technology based on in situ aluminothermic reduction and interstitial solid solution transformation to recover high-value I³-LiAlO2 and LiAl5O8 under vacuum and high-temperature (1723 K) conditions. It was found that the process of Li2O filling into the lattice of O-Al-O structure is an energy-reducing process, while LiAl5O8 was an existing high-energy transition-state matter. Since there was no wastewater generated, the process brought a new environment-friendly method for recovering valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries. This study also provides new comprehension regarding the design for high-value products' recovery from multi-element mixed wastes on an atomic scale.

Spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been one of the fast-growing and largest quantities of solid waste in the world. Spent graphite anode, accounting for 12-21 wt% of batteries, contains metals, binders, toxic, and flammable electrolytes. The efficient recovery of spent graphite is urgently needed for environmental protection and resource sustainability. Recently, more and more studies have been focused on spent graphite recycling, while the advance and challenges are rarely summarized. Hence, this study made a comprehensive review of graphite recycling including separation, regeneration, and synthesis of functional materials. Firstly, the pretreatment of graphite separation was overviewed. Then, the spent graphite regeneration methods such as leaching, pyrometallurgy, their integration processes, etc. were systematically introduced. Furthermore, the modification strategies to enhance the electrochemical performance were discussed. Subsequently, we reviewed in detail the synthesis of functional materials using spent graphite for energy and environmental applications including graphene, adsorbents, catalysts, capacitors, and graphite/polymer composites. Meanwhile, we briefly compared the economic and environmental benefits of graphite regeneration and other functional materials production. Finally, the technical bottlenecks and challenges for spent graphite recycling were summarized and some future research directions were proposed. This review contributes to spent LIBs recycling more efficiently and profitably in the future.

Intravaginal infection of mice with Chlamydia muridarum has been used for investigating the mechanisms of Chlamydia trachomatis-induced pathogenicity and immune responses. In the current study, the mouse model was used to evaluate the impact of interleukin-27 (IL-27) and its receptor signaling on the susceptibility of the female genital tract to chlamydial infection. Mice deficient in IL-27 developed significantly shortened courses of chlamydial infection in the female genital tract. The titers of live Chlamydia recovered from the genital tract of IL-27-deficient mice declined significantly by day 7 following intravaginal inoculation. These observations suggest that IL-27 may promote chlamydial infection in the female mouse genital tract. This conclusion was validated using IL-27 receptor (R)-deficient mice. Further, the reduction in chlamydial burden corelated with the increase in gamma interferon (IFN-γ) and IL-17 in the genital tract tissues of the IL-27R-deificent mice. However, depletion of IFN-γ but not IL-17 from the IL-27R-deificent mice significantly increased the chlamydial burden, indicating that IL-27 may mainly suppress IFN-γ-mediated immunity for promoting chlamydial infection. Finally, knockout of IL-27R from T cells alone was sufficient for significantly shortening the infectious shedding courses of Chlamydia in the mouse genital tract. The above-described results have demonstrated that Chlamydia can activate IL-27R signaling in Th1-like cells for promoting its infection in the female genital tract, suggesting that attenuating IL-27 signaling in T cells may be used for enhancing genital tract immunity against chlamydial infection.

Meniscus-confined electrodeposition (MCED), as one of multi-functional additive manufacturing methods for micro-sensor manufacturing and flexible electrical interconnection, has great potential in future miniaturized communication devices. At present, however, the understanding of the multi-physical field processes involved in this method, such as electrodeposition, fluid dynamics, mass and heat transfer, is limited, and the deposition forming process has not yet been well explained. In this work, the manufacturing process of metal microstructure used by MCED was studied, and the contour features of the microstructure were characterized. Simultaneously, based on the law of liquid phase mass transfer in microzone, the theoretical model of MCED process is established, the important role of Marangoni effect in evaporation process is revealed, and the effect of evaporation process on MCED is analyzed and discussed. Besides, the effect of evaporation process on the dynamic process of deposition is further proved by simulation analysis. The additive manufacturing equipment based on MCED was built to manufacture metal microstructure. Furthermore, the effects of evaporation on the morphology, roundness, vertical angle and chemical composition of deposited metal microstructure were analyzed experimentally. These results provide a promising platform for the direct fabrication of nanocircuit interconnections, micro sensors and micro antennas.

The increasingly large stream of e-waste is seriously threatening the environment; meanwhile, global energy shortage is on the rise. Based on the principles of energy regeneration and waste utilization, we introduced a win-win approach to utilize waste capacitors for construction of magnetic and core-shell Z-scheme Nb-Pb-codoped BaTiO3/Ni-Pd@graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalysts for H2 evolution. Using simple ball-milling, waste capacitors were transformed to Nb-Pb-codoped BaTiO3/Ni-Pd-Ag-Sn nanoparticles and g-C3N4 was coated on the nanoparticles, forming a core-shell structure. The Ni-Pd acted as the electron mediator in the Z-scheme, and Ag-Sn also facilitated the electron transfer. Moreover, Ni made the Z-scheme magnetically separable. The Z-scheme showed a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution rate, which was 22.2 times higher than that of g-C3N4. Such an enhanced photocatalytic performance was attributed to the special Z-scheme and core-shell structure, improving the light adsorption, increasing the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, facilitating the efficient separation of electron-hole pairs, and maintaining the strong redox ability of charge carriers. Furthermore, the photoluminescence analysis combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations provided the basis for the Z-scheme mechanism. This study adequately utilized the composition of e-waste to construct a highly efficient and magnetically separable Z-scheme for H2 generation, which realizes energy regeneration, waste recycling, and environmental protection.

The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been one of the global environmental concerns due to their huge quantity and hazardous and valuable character. The existing spent LIB processing mainly focuses on element separation, which is usually complex and energy consuming and even causes new environmental issues. This study breaks through the traditional element separation and utilizes spent LIBs for photocatalytic application. Through facile one-pot sintering of a spent LiCoO2 cathode, melamine and NH4Cl at 530 °C, we introduced a Li–Cl–Co anion–cation to synergistically regulate the π-conjugated structure of g-C3N4 for enhancing its photocatalytic activity. The Li–Cl–Co anion–cation was stabilized in g-C3N4 through Li–N, Li–Cl, Cl–C and Co–N bonds. The Co among the adjacent tri-s-triazine units decreased the bandgap to lower the electron transition energy. The Li and Cl intercalation respectively decreases and increases the interlayer spacing, leading to a gradient decrease in the energy barrier for dramatically boosting the charge migration and separation between g-C3N4 layers. These special characteristics synergistically contribute to the superior photocatalytic performance. The simulated sunlight photocatalytic H2 evolution and RhB degradation rates of this special photocatalyst were 12.6 and 15.3 times higher than those of pristine g-C3N4. This study avoids element separation and distinctively utilizes spent LIBs for photocatalytic application, which minimizes the environmental risks associated with recycling. Our study also reveals a synergetic concept of recycling wastes as high-efficiency photocatalysts for environmental protection.
