54. Microstructure and properties of amorphous FeSiCrBC soft magnetic composites prepared by using HNO3 solution.

Abstract

FeSiCrBC amorphous powder was treated by nitric acid HNO3 solution and the soft magnetic composites (SMCs) was prepared through compacting and annealing. The microstructure, magnetic and electrical properties of coated powder and SMCs were examined by modern analytical techniques including to X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and M-H magnetization curve. The effects of HNO3 concentration and annealing temperature on the microstructure and magnetic properties of amorphous FeSiCrBC powders and SMCs were investigated, respectively. A thin layer was formed on the surface of powder particles after HNO3 solution treatments, and the thickness of surface layer were 240 nm and 260 nm when the concentration of HNO3 were 2wt% and 4wt%, respectively. HNO3 treatments decreased the saturation magnetization (Ms) of the powder. The trend is more obvious with the increase of HNO3 concentration. The formation mechanism of insulating layer on the surface of amorphous powder particle treated by HNO3 solution was discussed. The insulation layers were mainly consist of iron complex oxides. The sample annealed at 450 °C has best values effective permeability μe (19.6) and magnetic loss Pcv (520 kW/m3) at 2% HNO3, and and μe (18.1) and Pcv (509 kW/m3) at 4% HNO3 under 50 kHz and 100mT. Abstract

Recently, a newly designed type of energy-input extraction column, agitated-pulsed column (APC), has been achieved high mass-transfer efficiency due to the small-size droplets and high dispersed-phase holdup. In view of the lack of feasible population-balance-model (PBM) kernel functions in APC, parameter optimization is conducted by a simplified PBM method. Then the optimized PBM kernel functions are implemented in the computational fluid-dynamics (CFD) code to investigate local two-phase flow behaviors in a 25 mm APC. The results show that the CFD-PBM successfully predicts the drop-size distribution measured in the experiments. CFD-PBM also gives good prediction of Sauter mean diameter and dispersed-phase holdup. The local flow behaviors are illustrated to understand the effects of operating conditions on the hydrodynamic performance. This work demonstrates a possibility for prediction of drop-size distribution by the combination of simplified PBM and CFD simulation.

Abstract

Effective receptors for the separation of Li+ from a mixture with other alkali metal ions under mild conditions remains an important challenge that could benefit from new approaches. In this study, it is demonstrated that the 4‐phosphoryl pyrazolones, HL2‐HL4, in the presence of the typical industrial organophosphorus co‐ligands tributylphosphine oxide (TBPO), tributylphosphate (TBP) and trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO), are able to selectively recognise and extract lithium ions from aqueous solution. Structural investigations in solution as well as in the solid state reveal the existence of a series of multinuclear Li+ complexes that include dimers (TBPO, TBP) as well as rarely observed trimers (TOPO) and represent the first clear evidence for the synergistic role of the co‐ligands in the extraction process. Our findings are supported by detailed NMR, MS and extraction studies. Liquid‐liquid extraction in the presence of TOPO revealed an unprecedented high Li+ extraction efficiency (78 %) for HL4 compared to the use of the industrially employed acylpyrazolone HL1 (15 %) and benzoyl‐1,1,1‐trifluoroacetone (52 %) extractants. In addition, a high selectivity for Li+ over Na+, K+ and Cs+ under mild conditions (pH ∼8.2) confirms that HL2‐HL4 represent a new class of ligands that are very effective extractants for use in lithium separation. Abstract

Molecular dynamics simulations of oxygen molecules in NaOH and KOH solutions at different temperatures (25-120 degrees C) and concentrations (1:100-1:5, molar ratios) were performed in this study. The interactions of oxygen molecules with the surrounding solvent and solute were clarified by considering the solvent-solvent, oxygen-solvent, and oxygen-solute radial distribution functions. The self-diffusion coefficients of the oxygen molecules and the solute were both determined by analyzing the mean-squared displacement (MSD) curves, using Einstein's relationship. It was concluded that at all concentrations, the diffusion coefficient of oxygen in NaOH solution is smaller than that in the corresponding KOH solution. The diffusion coefficients for hydroxide, Na+, and K+ decrease with increasing solute concentration, following similar trends to those of oxygen. The oxygen diffusion coefficient obtained in this study is in good agreement with the reported experimental value, suggesting that MSD is an attractive approach to study the oxygen diffusion behavior in strong alkaline solutions at elevated temperatures, which are experimentally extremely challenging.

98. Effective removal of Pb2+and Cd2+from wastewater by mesoporous tobermorite synthesized from alumina-extracted fly ash

Abstract

In this study, for the first time, the effective removal of Pb2+and Cd2+from wastewater by meso-porous tobermorite synthesized from alumina-extracted fly ash (AEFA) was reported. The results of characterization of the synthesized tobermorite indicated that it showed mesoporous structure, with a high specific surface area of 68.4 m2g–1. The tobermorite particles were aggregates of plate-like particles resulting in slit-shaped pores. The mesoporous tobermorite showed high removal efficiency for Pb2+and Cd2+of 99.97% and 78.64%, respectively, and the adsorption kinetic data for Pb2+and Cd2+on tobermorite were better fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Pb2+and Cd2+adsorption isotherms were better described by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacities of the tobermorite towards Pb2+and Cd2+were 338.98 and 105.37 mg g–1, respectively. The high adsorption capacities of the tobermorite towards Pb2+and Cd2+were due to its high specific surface area, the ion exchange of Ca2+with Pb2+and Cd2+, and the precipitation. This study shows the mesoporous tobermorite synthesized from AEFA as a low-cost and effective adsorbent for Pb2+and Cd2+and broadens the potential application of AEFA in wastewater treatment.
