56. Water Absorption Characteristics and Compression Strength of a New Bulking Agent

Abstract

To improve bulking agent reusability and reduce bulking agent costs, a new bulking agent was developed using straw and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate(MDI). The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the new bulking agent. The new bulking agent was systematically evaluated by testing its water absorption characteristics and compression strength. The results showed that the new bulking agent has high compression strength, and when the proportion of bulking agent was between 25 and 33%, its water absorption capacity was maximized, and the moisture content of the mixture could be adjusted to approximately 60% with 24 h equilibration time. This study indicates that this new bulking agent is suitable for improving substrate structure and regulating moisture content during composting of sewage sludge.

Abstract

Concentrations of the organic contaminants in sewage sludge dewatering of several Chinese cities were analyzed,and pointed out the concentration of PAHs was 1.156—34.940mg/kg,PCBs content was 0—115.730mg/kg;PCDD/Fs concentration was 9.530—22.900ngTEQ · g-1dm,NP concentration was 177 mg/kg.This paper demonstrated that the organic contaminants in sludge can be degraded with the aerobic biological treatment technology,and the environment risk of the organic contaminants in sewage sludge can be reduced to realize the safety and environmental protection of land use.Meanwhile,by optimizing sludge biological aerobic fermentation control conditions: C/N in the range of 25 ∶ 1 to 40 ∶ 1,a temperature of 30 to 55℃,the oxygen concentration is 5%—15%,forced ventilation control in 1.5—2.0m3 · min-1 · t-1(dried mud),pH6—9,mixing water rate is 50%—65%,the environmental risk of sewage sludge land application can significantly be reduced.The resource utilization of the sludge to bring about two pollution problems can also be avoided.

Abstract

A field investigation on the content of heavy metals in soils and 17 kinds of dominant plants from wasteland of the downstream of a Pb-Zn mine in Northwest Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region was carried out. The absorption and accumulation characteristics of heavy metals between plants and soil were compared, and the candidate species for ecosystem restoration of the area were selected. The results indicated that the soils had been subjected to pollution of heavy metals in varying degrees. The concentrations of Cd, Pb, Zn were 46.5, 57.3 and 23.7 times higher than their corresponding background values, respectively. The contents of Cd, Pb and Zn in the most analyzed plants exceed the normal ranges and the phytotoxic level. C. crepidioides , S. nigrum , B. pilosa , C. Canadensis , A. conyzoides , I. denticulata and E. crusgali showed strong capability in accumulation and transport of Cd, and they could be used as good candidates for Cd- phytoextraction. Among which, Cd concentration in the aerial part of C. crepidioides exceeded the threshold of Cd-hyperaccumulator. Thus, C. crepidioides demonstrated the basic characteristics of a Cd-hyperaccumulator. The lower translocation ratios for Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb in P. vittata and C. chinensis make them suitable for phytostabilization in the study area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
