Infrared metasurfaces have exhibited exceptional optical properties that differ from naturally occurring metallic and dielectric nanostructure, enabling non-destructive and label-free sensing in a broadband region. However, implementing wavelength multiplexing sensors in broadband infrared has faced significant challenges. These challenges arise from the difficulty in efficiently exciting high Q resonances at specific wavelengths and the inability to individually tune each resonance. Herein, we present a dual resonant metasurface that utilizes a metal–dielectric–metal plasmonic grating and a dielectric–metal channel. By adjusting the vertical and horizontal structures of metasurface, we can independently modify the spectrum of the metasurface in the near-infrared and mid-infrared regions. This broadband infrared metasurface exhibits robust spectral regulation, enabling a polarization-dependent strategy for the dual-resonance. It offers a competitive advantage over traditional metallic nanostructure in refractive index sensing at the second near-infrared window and ultrasensitive vibrational spectroscopy in mid-infrared. Specifically, our proposed metasurface achieves protein concentration sensing and dynamic monitoring of protein concentration in the infrared two-zone. Additionally, it enhances the mid-infrared absorption of amide II with a high Q resonance. The metasurface which combines wavelength multiplexing and polarization dependent switch for protein recognition and trace detection, presents a novel approach for developing high-performance sensors and Integrated photonics sensors in the broadband infrared region.

Heart failure is a continuously developing syndrome of cardiac insufficiency caused by diseases, which becomes a major disease endangering human health as well as one of the main causes of death in patients with cardiovascular diseases. The occurrence of heart failure is related to hemodynamic abnormalities, neuroendocrine hormones, myocardial damage, myocardial remodeling etc, lead to the clinical manifestations including dyspnea, fatigue and fluid retention with complex pathophysiological mechanisms. Currently available drugs such as cardiac glycoside, diuretic, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, vasodilator and β receptor blocker etc are widely used for the treatment of heart failure. In particular, natural products and related active ingredients have the characteristics of mild efficacy, low toxicity, multi-target comprehensive efficacy, and have obvious advantages in restoring cardiac function, reducing energy disorder and improving quality of life. In this review, we mainly focus on the recent advance including mechanisms and active ingredients of natural products for the treatment of heart failure, which will provide the inspiration for the development of more potent clinical drugs against heart failure.

Microplastics (MPs) are widely identified as emerging hazards causing considerable eco-toxicity in terrestrial ecosystems, but the impacts differ in different ecosystem functions among different chemical compositions, morphology, sizes, concentrations, and experiment duration. Given the close relationships and trade-offs between plant and soil systems, probing the “whole ecosystem” instead of individual functions must yield novel insights into MPs affecting terrestrial ecosystems. Here, a comprehensive meta-analysis was employed to reveal an unambiguous response of the plant-soil-microbial system to MPs. Results showed that in view of plant, soil, and microbial functions, the general response patterns of plant and soil functions to MPs were obviously opposite. For example, polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) MPs highly increased plant functions, while posed negative effects on soil functions. Polystyrene (PS) and biodegradable (Bio) MPs decreased plant functions, while stimulating soil functions. Additionally, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), PE, PS, PVC, Bio, and granular MPs significantly decreased soil microbial functions. These results clearly revealed that MPs alter the equilibrium of the plant-soil-microbial system. More importantly, our results further revealed that MPs tended to increase ecosystem multifunctionality, e.g., LDPE and PVC MPs posed positive effects on ecosystem multifunctionality, PE, PS, and Bio MPs showed neutral effects on ecosystem multifunctionality. Linear regression analysis showed that under low MPs size ( 5% w/w). These findings emphasize the importance of studying the effects of MPs on plant-soil-microbial systems and help us identify ways to reduce the eco-toxicity of MPs and maintain environmental safety in view of an ecology perspective.

Numerous health hazards have been connected to advanced glycation end products (AGEs). In this investigation, using reaction models including BSA-fructose, BSA- methylglyoxal (MGO), and BSA-glyoxal (GO), we examined the anti-glycation potential of eight different berry species on AGEs formation. Our results indicate that black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) exhibited the highest inhibitory effects, with IC50 values of 0.35 ± 0.02, 0.45 ± 0.03, and 0.48 ± 0.11 mg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, our findings suggest that black chokeberry inhibits AGE formation by binding to BSA, which alleviates the conformation alteration, prevents protein cross-linking, and traps reactive α-dicarbonyls to form adducts. Notably, three major polyphenols, including cyanidin-3-O-galactoside, cyanidin-3-O-arabinoside, and procyanidin B2 from black chokeberry, showed remarkably inhibitory effect on MGO/GO capture, and new adducts formation was verified through LC-MS/MS analysis. In summary, our research provides a theoretical basis for the use of berries, particularly black chokeberry, as natural functional food components with potential anti-glycation effects.

BackgroundLupus nephritis (LN) is a common disease with diverse clinical and pathological manifestations. A major challenge in the management of LN is the inability to predict its treatment response at an early stage. The objective of this study was to determine whether the density of tubulointerstitial macrophage infiltration can be used to predict treatment response in LN and whether its addition to clinicopathological data at the time of biopsy would improve risk prediction.MethodsIn this retrospective cohort study, 430 patients with LN in our hospital from January 2010 to December 2017 were included. We used immunohistochemistry to show macrophage and lymphocyte infiltration in their biopsy specimens, followed by quantification of the infiltration density. The outcome was the treatment response, defined as complete or partial remission at 12 months of immunosuppression.ResultsThe infiltration of CD68+ macrophages in the interstitium increased in patients with LN. High levels of CD68+ macrophage infiltration in the interstitium were associated with a low probability of treatment response in the adjusted analysis, and verse vice. The density of CD68+ macrophage infiltration in the interstitium alone predicted the response to immunosuppression (area under the curve [AUC], 0.70; 95% CI, 0.63 to 0.76). The addition of CD68+cells/interstitial field to the pathological and clinical data at biopsy in the prediction model resulted in an increased AUC of 0.78 (95% CI, 0.73 to 0.84).ConclusionThe density of tubulointerstitial macrophage infiltration is an independent predictor for treatment response in LN. Adding tubulointerstitial macrophage infiltration density to clinicopathological data at the time of biopsy significantly improves risk prediction of treatment response in LN patients.

Abstract Medical devices are commonly implanted underneath the skin, but how to real‐time noninvasively monitor their migration, integrity, and biodegradation in human body is still a formidable challenge. Here, the study demonstrates that benzyl violet 4B (BV‐4B), a main component in the FDA‐approved surgical suture, is found to produce fluorescence signal in the first near‐infrared window (NIR‐I, 700–900 nm) in polar solutions, whereas BV‐4B self‐assembles into highly crystalline aggregates upon a formation of ultrasmall nanodots and can emit strong fluorescence in the second near‐infrared window (NIR‐II, 1000–1700 nm) with a dramatic bathochromic shift in the absorption spectrum of ≈200 nm. Intriguingly, BV‐4B‐involved suture knots underneath the skin can be facilely monitored during the whole degradation process in vivo, and the rupture of the customized BV‐4B‐coated silicone catheter is noninvasively diagnosed by NIR‐II imaging. Furthermore, BV‐4B suspended in embolization glue achieves hybrid fluorescence‐guided surgery (hybrid FGS) for arteriovenous malformation. As a proof‐of‐concept study, the solid‐state BV‐4B is successfully used for NIR‐II imaging of surgical sutures in operations of patients. Overall, as a clinically translatable solid‐state dye, BV‐4B can be applied for in vivo monitoring the fate of medical devices by NIR‐II imaging.

The aim of the study is to explore the serial multiple mediating role of effort- reward imbalance and resilience between perceived stress and psychological disorders among healthcare professionals.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in China from February to April 2023. 为了实现类可可脂在巧克力中更为高效的应用，降低其对产品品质的影响，综述了类可可脂原料油中低熔点甘油三酯的组成与熔化性质，概括了不同种类甘油三酯对巧克力霜变行为的作用特征；进一步讨论了控制低熔点甘油三酯含量的技术方法，包括基因工程和分提；最后，总结了经分提获得的低熔点成分的再利用。类可可脂原料油中低熔点甘油三酯可能对巧克力的制造（尤其是调温）和质量控制（如软化、起霜等）产生不利影响。通过分提选择性降低低熔点甘油三酯含量是制备高品质类可可脂的优选路径。In order to achieve a more efficient application of cocoa butter equivalent in chocolate and to reduce their impact on product quality, the composition and melting properties of low-melting triglycerides in cocoa butter equivalent raw oils were reviewed, and the effects of different types of triglycerides on the frosting behavior of chocolate were summarized. The technological methods for controlling the content of low-melting triglycerides were further discussed, including genetic engineering and fractionation, and the reuse of low-melting triglycerides obtained by fractionation was summarized. Low-melting triglycerides in cocoa butter equivalent raw oils may have negative effects on chocolate manufacture (especially tempering) and quality control (softening, and blooming, etc). Reducing the content of low-melting triglycerides by fractionation is the best way to prepare high quality cocoa butter equivalent.

Abstract Molecular imaging plays important roles in many fields, including disease diagnosis, therapeutic efficacy evaluation, intraoperative imaging guidance, drug metabolism monitoring, and patient selection for appropriate treatment. As a key component, the targeting ligand determines the specificity, affinity, and in vivo performance of molecular imaging probes. In this review, high‐throughput screening and biological display platforms for the discovery of ligands applicable to molecular imaging are briefly reviewed. Basic information on ligand development for molecular imaging is first introduced, followed by a presentation of various selection platforms and typical or iterative cases. The features, advantages, limitations, and application scope of screening and display platforms are compared and discussed. Last, a basic selection strategy and a perspective for protein‐based ligands are provided.

Abstract Background The Editorial Board of EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry releases a biannual highlight commentary to update the readership on trends in the field of radiopharmaceutical development. Main Body This selection of highlights provides commentary on 21 different topics selected by each coauthoring Editorial Board member addressing a variety of aspects ranging from novel radiochemistry to first-in-human application of novel radiopharmaceuticals. Conclusion Trends in radiochemistry and radiopharmacy are highlighted. Hot topics cover the entire scope of EJNMMI Radiopharmacy and Chemistry, demonstrating the progress in the research field, and include new PET-labelling methods for 11C and 18F, the importance of choosing the proper chelator for a given radioactive metal ion, implications of total body PET on use of radiopharmaceuticals, legislation issues and radionuclide therapy including the emerging role of 161Tb.
