Abstract

Metasurface with gradient phase response offers new alternative for steering the propagation of waves. Conventional Snell's law has been revised by taking the contribution of local phase gradient into account. However, the requirement of momentum matching along the metasurface sets its nontrivial beam manipulation functionality within a limited-angle incidence. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that the acoustic gradient metasurface supports the negative reflection for all-angle incidence. The mode expansion theory is developed to help understand how the gradient metasurface tailors the incident beams, and the all-angle negative reflection occurs when the first negative order Floquet-Bloch mode dominates inside the metasurface slab. The coiling-up space structures are utilized to build desired acoustic gradient metasurface, and the all-angle negative reflections have been perfectly verified by experimental measurements. Our work offers the Floquet-Bloch modes perspective for qualitatively understanding the reflection behaviors of the acoustic gradient metasurface, and the all-angle negative reflection characteristic possessed by acoustic gradient metasurface could enable a new degree of the acoustic wave manipulating and be applied in the functional diffractive acoustic elements, such as the all-angle acoustic back reflector.

Abstract

There are growing efforts in constructing topological edge states in classical wave system. However, most of the work study the existence, creation and properties of the edge states, and the demonstration of application is highly desirable. Here, we present our design of a two-dimensional anisotropic phononic crystal that exhibits tunable topological phases. We further explore the contribution of anisotropy and show that the bandgap topology is also related to particular directions and frequency. Such frequency dependent behavior can be utilized as a frequency filter.

Abstract

Background X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLHR) is the most common genetic form of hypophosphatemic rickets (HR), which is caused by phosphate regulating endopeptidase homolog X-linked (PHEX) gene mutation. At present, the genotype–phenotype relationship of XLHR and the pathogenic role of PHEX are not fully understood. Methods In this study, we summarized clinical features in a new cohort of 49 HR patients and detected 16 novel PHEX and 5 novel non-PHEX variants. Subsequently, we studied the pathogenesis of new variants by protein expression, glycosylation analysis, subcellular localization, and endopeptidase activity. Results The results showed that missense variants (Q189H and X750R) slightly reduced protein expression without obviously altering protein length and localization, whereas truncating variants significantly impaired the synthesis of PHEX and produced a shorter immature protein in cells. Interestingly, no evident correlation was observed between mutation types and clinical phenotypes. However, when we analyzed the relationship between PHEX activity and serum phosphorus level, we found that patients with low PHEX activity tended to have severe hypophosphatemia and high rickets severity score. Following this observation, we established 2 new knock-in XLHR mouse models with 2 novel Phex variants (c.T1349C and c.C426G, respectively) using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Both mouse models demonstrated clinical manifestations of XLHR seen in patients, and PhexC426G mice showed more severe phenotype than PhexT1349C mice, which further confirmed the rationality of genotype–PHEX enzymatic activity correlation analysis. Conclusion Therefore, our findings demonstrated that novel PHEX variants could disrupt protein function via affecting protein synthesis, post-translational modification, cellular trafficking, and catalytic activity. Our study facilitates a better understanding of XLHR pathogenic mechanism and PHEX activity-phenotype correlation, which is of crucial importance for future diagnosis and treatment of XLHR. Abstract

The utilization of polymer conformations to construct a variety of superlattices is a common method within the field. However, this technique often results in only long‐range ordering rather than the formation of distinct superlattices. In this study, a well‐organized array of discrete pancake‐shaped superlattices (DPSs) is successfully obtained through the utilization of air–liquid interface self‐assembly, facilitated by the confined environment created by a block copolymer. It is crucial to note that both the self‐assembly behavior and resulting morphologies of the DPSs can be precisely tuned by adjusting several experimental parameters, most notably the concentration and molecular architecture of the block copolymers. Furthermore, this work provides valuable insights into the formation processes and mechanisms underpinning the DPSs. The approach described here is both straightforward and efficacious, establishing a strong foundation for subsequent research and the development of non‐close‐packed superlattice structures. 79. Effect of fission defects on tensile strength of U3Si2 Σ5(210) grain boundary from first-principles calculations.

Abstract

U3Si2 is regarded as a promising accident tolerant fuel (ATF) to replace the commercial fuel UO2; however, grain boundary (GB) embrittlement of U3Si2 caused by irradiation-induced defect segregation remains to be clarified. In this work, the U3Si2 Σ5(210) symmetrically tilted GB is taken as a representative to elucidate the individual effect of xenon (Xe) and vacancy on the tensile strength and failure of GBs using first-principles calculations. Compared with the predicted segregation energies of defects at the most energetically favourable positions of GBs, Si vacancy (VSi) has a much stronger preference to segregate to GBs than that of Xe substitution on the Si sublattice (XeSi). Moreover, the strengthening/embrittlement potency of GBs with single vacancy/Xe is evaluated using the first-principles-based uniaxial tensile test. Although both VSi and XeSi yield a weakening effect on the strength of the U3Si2 Σ5(210) GB, such defective GBs exhibit significantly stronger interface strengths compared to the corresponding defects segregated to the UO2 Σ3(111) GB. The underlying mechanism of strength change of U3Si2 GBs is discussed in terms of charge analysis. Abstract

The primary concerns for individuals using lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are aging and thermal runaway (TR). This paper focuses on the thermal runaway propagation (TRP) of cycling aged LIB modules. The impacts of state of charge (SOC), state of health, and cyclic aging temperature on TRP in LIB modules are investigated. The analysis includes parameters such as temperature, voltage, and mass of the modules during TRP. It was found that as SOC increases, the maximum increase in temperature and maximum temperature rate of the modules increased, as did the total mass loss and smoke emissions. The average heat transfer between adjacent cells was higher for the lower SOC. Cycle aging reduces the thermal stability of LIBs, leading to a lower maximum temperature and maximum temperature rate, as well as a larger mass loss compared with fresh battery modules. Regarding aging temperature, low-temperature aging reduces the total duration of TRP compared with room temperature, but it increases the maximum temperature rate and causes greater mass loss. 88. Robust acoustic cloaking with density-near-zero materials

Abstract

Using the phenomenon of extraordinary sound transmission (EST) through artificially constructed density-near-zero (DNZ) materials, we propose an alternative approach to realize a very robust acoustic cloaking, which includes one absorber and one projector connected by an energy channel. The elementary unit cell is made of one single-piece homogeneous copper, but it well maintains both the original planar wavefront and the nearly perfect one-dimensional transmission, in the presence of any inserted objects. Furthermore, the overall cloaked space can be increased, designed, and distributed by arbitrarily assembling additional DNZ cells without any upper limit in the total cloaking volume. We demonstrate acoustic cloaking by different combinations of DNZ cells in free space as well as in acoustic waveguides, which enables any objects inside the cells imperceptible along undistorted sound paths.

Abstract

To solve the gas pre-drainage problem of high gas low permeability coal seam, based on LS-DYNA3D nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis software, the process of forming jet by perforating charge crushing shaped charge liner and penetrating coal seam is simulated. The formation of metal jet and the action range of penetrating coal seam are analyzed, and the penetrating depth is 1.4 m. The comparison is made with non-shaped charge liner penetrating coal seam. The results showed that the penetration depth increased by 250% and the active area increased by 2 592%.

Abstract

Optical wavefront can be manipulated by interfering elementary beams with phase inhomogeneity. Therefore a surface allowing huge, abrupt and position-variant phase change would enable all possibilities of wavefront engineering. However, one may not have the luxury of efficient abrupt-phase-changing materials in acoustics. This motivates us to establish a counterpart mechanism for acoustics, in order to empower the wide spectrum of novel acoustic applications. Remarkably, the proposed impedance-governed generalized Snell's law (IGSL) of reflection is distinguished from that in optics. Via the manipulation of inhomogeneous acoustic impedance, extraordinary reflection can be tailored for unprecedented wavefront manipulation while ordinary reflection can be surprisingly switched on or off. 98. Second-Shell N Dopants Regulate Acidic O2Reduction Pathways on Isolated Pt Sites

Abstract

Pt is a well-known benchmark catalyst in the acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) that drives electrochemical O2-to-H2O conversion with maximum chemical energy-to-electricity efficiency. Once dispersing bulk Pt into isolated single atoms, however, the preferential ORR pathway remains a long-standing controversy due to their complex local coordination environment and diverse site density over substrates. Herein, using a set of carbon nanotube supported Pt–N–C single-atom catalysts, we demonstrate how the neighboring N dopants regulate the electronic structure of the Pt central atom and thus steer the ORR selectivity; that is, the O2-to-H2O2conversion selectivity can be tailored from 10% to 85% at 0.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Moreover, via a comprehensive X-ray-radiated spectroscopy and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy analysis coupled with theoretical modeling, we reveal that a dominant pyridinic- and pyrrolic-N coordination within the first shell of Pt–N–C motifs favors the 4e–ORR, whereas the introduction of a second-shell graphitic-N dopant weakens *OOH binding on neighboring Pt sites and gives rise to a dominant 2e–ORR. These findings underscore the importance of the chemical environment effect for steering the electrochemical performance of single-atom catalysts.
