Abstract

Besides being regulated by G-protein-coupled receptors, the activity of heterotrimeric G proteins is modulated by many cytoplasmic proteins. GIV/Girdin and DAPLE (Dvl-associating protein with a high frequency of leucine) are the best-characterized members of a group of cytoplasmic regulators that contain a Gα-binding and -activating (GBA) motif and whose dysregulation underlies human diseases, including cancer and birth defects. GBA motif-containing proteins were originally reported to modulate G proteins by binding Gα subunits of the Gi/o family (Gαi) over other families (such as Gs, Gq/11, or G12/13), and promoting nucleotide exchange in vitro However, some evidence suggests that this is not always the case, as phosphorylation of the GBA motif of GIV promotes its binding to Gαs and inhibits nucleotide exchange. The G-protein specificity of DAPLE and how it might affect nucleotide exchange on G proteins besides Gαi remain to be investigated. Here, we show that DAPLE's GBA motif, in addition to Gαi, binds efficiently to members of the Gs and Gq/11 families (Gαs and Gαq, respectively), but not of the G12/13 family (Gα12) in the absence of post-translational phosphorylation. We pinpointed Met-1669 as the residue in the GBA motif of DAPLE that diverges from that in GIV and enables better binding to Gαs and Gαq Unlike the nucleotide-exchange acceleration observed for Gαi, DAPLE inhibited nucleotide exchange on Gαs and Gαq These findings indicate that GBA motifs have versatility in their G-protein-modulating effect, i.e. they can bind to Gα subunits of different classes and either stimulate or inhibit nucleotide exchange depending on the G-protein subtype.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the main contradictions and challenges in the development of China's alumina industry in terms of resources, production costs and environmental governance, compares the production cost of China's alumina with that of other countries, analyzes the pollutants produced in the production process of alumina, and discusses the related problems. On this basis, this paper puts forward the strategies and suggestions for the sustainable development of China's alumina industry, that is, adopt advanced technology and equipment to solve the problem of bauxite resource shortage; Improve safety protection facilities to prevent accidents and hazards; Solve the problem of deep purification and standard discharge of alumina industrial flue gas; Implement the safe storage and resource utilization of alumina industrial solid waste; Increase the depth recovery efficiency of waste heat in alumina production; Implement all safety management measures and strengthen the ability to prevent accidents. By adopting the above strategies, the sustainable development strategy of China's alumina industry can be realized.

98. Enhanced light emission from plasmonic nanostructures by molecules

Abstract

Interaction between plasmonic nanostructures and molecules is modeled based on the concept of quantized optical cavity for surface enhanced Raman scattering process. We have found that the background emission from plasmonic nanostructures is not constant as speculated ordinarily, it is enhanced accompanying with the molecules Raman scattering. The plasmonic nanostructures not only scatter elastically the energy coupling from the molecules excited states, but also radiate it inelastically as surface plasmon emission partly resulting an enhanced background. According to single nanoparticle experiments, the model reveals that the background fluctuations is mainly due to the induced field of the molecules, which increases the local field felt by the nanostructures that was often overlooked in the past. These findings suggest considering the plasmonic nanostructures and molecules as a hybrid entity to analyze and optimize the surface enhanced spectroscopy., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We demonstrate that the fluorescent emitters can increase light emission from the plasmonic nanostructures in turn. With the help of atomic force microscopy, a hybrid system consisting of a fluorescent nanodiamond and a gold nanoparticle was assembled step-by-step for in situ optical measurements. We found that the emission from the nanoparticle increased compared with that before coupling. The interaction between plasmonic nanostructures and fluorescent emitter was understood as an entity based on the concept of a quantized optical cavity by considering the nanodiamond and the nanoparticle as a two-level energy system and a nanoresonator, respectively. The theoretical calculations reveal that both the plasmonic coupling effect and the dielectric nanoantenna effect contribute to the enhancement of light emission from the gold nanoparticles., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures

Abstract

Objective: Excessive weight gain, obesity, or insufficient weight gain during pregnancy can adversely affect both the mother and her offspring. This study aims to investigate the relationship between pregnant women's self‐perception and beliefs and their body weight management during pregnancy. Methods: A cross‐sectional survey involving 350 pregnant women in Changsha City was conducted from July to September 2023. Instruments included a sociodemographic data sheet, protective motivation questionnaire for pregnancy body quality management, and scales measuring body image, anxiety, self‐efficacy, and social support. Univariate analysis and multiple linear regression were employed to identify factors influencing protective motivation for body quality management during pregnancy. Results: The average score of the protective motivation questionnaire was 124 (SD = 13.07), suggesting a need for enhanced weight management. Key factors influencing protective motivation included household income, cooperation with healthcare workers, sources of pregnancy information, midnight snacking habits, prepregnancy exercise, body image, and self‐efficacy (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The study highlights significant factors influencing pregnant women's motivation for body quality management. These include economic status, healthcare collaboration, information accessibility, lifestyle habits, and psychological factors. The findings underscore the need for healthcare professionals to integrate these factors into pregnancy care programs to improve body quality management. Synopsis: Protective motivation for gestational weight management is medium to high, mainly influenced by household income, cooperation with healthcare professionals, knowledge sources, body image, and self‐efficacy.
