Advancing transformative change for sustainability requires population‐wide behavior change. Yet, many behavioral interventions tackling environmental problems only examine average effects on the aggregate, overlooking the heterogeneous effects in a population. We developed and preregistered a novel audience segmentation approach to test the diverse impact of conservation messaging on reducing demand for exotic pets (private action ‐ i.e., desire to own exotic pets or visit wildlife entertainment places) and fostering citizen engagement for system‐wide change (civic action ‐ e.g., signing a petition or participating in a protest against the exotic pet trade). Through an online survey with US participants (n = 2953), we identified 4 population segments (early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards), representing varying levels of commitment to wildlife conservation and then randomly assigned each segment to one of 3 messaging conditions. Messages highlighting negative consequences of the exotic pet trade and the power of collective action for system change effectively promoted private action among all segments except early adopters (ηp2 = 0.005). Among civic actions, only the collective action message motivated early adopters and the early majority to sign petitions (φC = 0.193 and φC = 0.097, respectively). Furthermore, the 4 segments showed distinct reasoning for action and inaction on wildlife conservation, with certain relational values, such as care, serving as both motivations and barriers to action. A sandwich electrochemical biosensing strategy for ultrasensitive detection of miRNA-21 was developed by using graphene oxide incorporated 3D-flower-like MoS2 (3D MoS2-rGO) nanocomposites as the substrate and horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-functionalized DNA strand 1 (S1)-gold nanoparticles (S1-AuNPs-HRP) as signal amplification probes. Herein, 3D MoS2-rGO nanocomposites not only had a large specific surface area and excellent conductivity, but also provided more attachment sites for electrodepositing AuNPs. In the presence of target miRNA, a sandwich structure was formed, and the determination of the miRNA-21 was carried out by measuring the DPV response of H2O2 mediated by hydroquinone (HQ) at a potential of + 0.052 V (vs AgCl reference electrode). Under the optimal experimental conditions, the as-prepared biosensor enabled the ultrasensitive detection of miRNA-21 from 5 fM to 0.5 μM with the low detection limit of 0.54 fM (S/N = 3), comparable or lower than previous reported methods for miRNA-21 detection, which benefited from the synergistic amplification of 3D MoS2-rGO and AuNPs-HRP. The prepared biosensor showed satisfactory selectivity, reproducibility, and stability towards miRNA-21 detection. The biosensor was feasible for accurate and quantitative detection of miRNA-21 in normal human serum samples with RSD below 5.86%, which showed a great potential in clinical analysis and disease diagnosis. The fact that most of cyber security problems are interdependent security problems, in which one agent's security is affected not only by this agent's security investment but also by the security decisions of his neighbors, has encouraged more and more people to study security games and security investment on large computer networks. In this paper, we study interdependent security problems by modeling the problems as public goods games on structured populations. We put forward an incentive mechanism named quantized externality mechanism to improve the overall social payoff in evolutionary public goods games of security investment on complex networks. Moreover, we introduce local exit equilibrium into our new mechanism to satisfy voluntary participation principle. Simulation results show that our mechanism can play an important role in increasing the level of security investment on complex networks. The increasing prevalence of microplastics in the environment has become a concern for various ecosystems, including wetland ecosystems. Here, we investigated the effects of three popular microplastic types: polyethylene, polylactic acid, and tire particles at 5 °C and 25 °C on the sediment microbiome and metabolome at the 3% (w/w) level. Results indicated that temperature greatly influenced catalase and neutral phosphatase activities, whereas the type of microplastic had a more significant impact on urease and dehydrogenase activities. The addition of microplastic, especially tire particles, increased microbial diversity and significantly altered the microbial community structure and metabolic profile, leading to the formation of different clusters of microbial communities depending on the temperature. Nonetheless, the effect of temperature on the metabolite composition was less significant. Functional prediction showed that the abundance of functional genes related to metabolism and biogeochemical cycling increased with increasing temperature, especially the tire particles treatment group affected the nitrogen cycling by inhibiting ureolysis and nitrogen fixation. These observations emphasize the need to consider microplastic type and ambient temperature to fully understand the ecological impact of microplastics on microbial ecosystems. Background: The small-area deprivation indices are varied across countries due to different social context and data availability. Due to lack of chronic disease-related social deprivation index (SDI) in Hong Kong, China, this study aimed to develop a new SDI and examine its association with cancer mortality. Methods: A total of 14 socio-economic variables of 154 large Tertiary Planning Unit groups (LTPUGs) in Hong Kong were obtained from 2016 population by-census. LTPUG-specific all-cause and chronic condition-related mortality and chronic condition inpatient episodes were calculated as health outcomes. Association of socio-economic variables with health outcomes was estimated for variable selection. Candidates for SDI were constructed with selected socio-economic variables and tested for criterion validity using health outcomes. Ecological association between the selected SDI and cancer mortality were examined using zero-inflated negative binomial regression. Results: A chronic disease-related SDI constructed by six area-level socio-economic variables was selected based on its criterion validity with health outcomes in Hong Kong. It was found that social deprivation was associated with higher cancer mortality during 2011–2016 (most deprived areas: incidence relative risk [IRR] = 1.40, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.27–1.55; second most deprived areas: IRR = 1.34, 95%CI: 1.21–1.48; least deprived areas as reference), and the cancer mortality gap became larger in more recent years. Excess cancer death related to social deprivation was found to have increased through 2011–2016. Conclusions: Our newly developed SDI is a valid and routinely available measurement of social deprivation in small areas and is useful in resource allocation and policy-making for public health purpose in communities. There is a potential large improvement in cancer mortality by offering relevant policies and interventions to reduce health-related deprivation. As incidences of human–wildlife interaction escalate, it is useful to increase understanding of the perceptions that might underpin these interactions or explain human behavior so associated. This study sought to identify public perceptions of the animal mind across wildlife species and to examine how states or qualities such as conscious thinking and feeling are perceived. We also aimed to evaluate whether people anthropomorphize species as readily as is often postulated. Using an online survey of 2,342 participants from the United States, we characterized perceptions of 36 wildlife species. In doing so, we also sought to stabilize inconsistent terminology in previous animal mind studies, by characterizing and measuring attributions of two specific traits, which we categorized as "cognitive" and "emotive." We found that people differentiate between cognitive traits (intellectual traits) and emotive traits (experiential, emotional states). Contrary to some past studies as well as popular assumptions, cognitive traits were ascribed more frequently than emotive traits for all animals. In addition, different animal classes were perceived as having varying levels of capacity of both traits. Mammals were ranked highest on qualities that defined both traits, followed by birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish. The ranges within class also varied. Our findings provide new insights on how the public view the mental capabilities of wildlife species. The study further suggests that perceptions regarding the cognitive ability of animals may be higher than previously believed and that emotive traits may not be as notable as traditionally assumed. Background. Thymoma is a heterogeneous tumor originated from thymic epithelial cells. The molecular mechanism of thymoma remains unclear. Methods. The expression profile, methylation, and mutation data of thymoma were obtained from TCGA database. The coexpression network was constructed using the variance of gene expression through WGCNA. Enrichment analysis using clusterProfiler R package and overall survival (OS) analysis by Kaplan-Meier method were carried out for the intersection of differential expression genes (DEGs) screened by limma R package and important module genes. PPI network was constructed based on STRING database for genes with significant impact on survival. The impact of key genes on the prognosis of thymoma was evaluated by ROC curve and Cox regression model. Finally, the immune cell infiltration, methylation modification, and gene mutation were calculated. Results. We obtained eleven coexpression modules, and three of them were higher positively correlated with thymoma. DEGs in these three modules mainly involved in MAPK cascade and PPAR pathway. LIPE, MYH6, ACTG2, KLF4, SULT4A1, and TF were identified as key genes through the PPI network. AUC values of LIPE were the highest. Cox regression analysis showed that low expression of LIPE was a prognostic risk factor for thymoma. In addition, there was a high correlation between LIPE and T cells. Importantly, the expression of LIPE was modified by methylation. Among all the mutated genes, GTF2I had the highest mutation frequency. Conclusion. These results suggested that the molecular mechanism of thymoma may be related to immune inflammation. LIPE may be the key genes affecting prognosis of thymoma. Anoectochilus roxburghii (AR) has been used in food, medicine and ornamental industries for a long time. Anion exchange resin was proposed to purify the sub-fraction of water-extracted AR polysaccharide (ARPP-70), and a homogeneous polysaccharide ARPP-70a was obtained. The structural features of ARPP-70a were characterized using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and high performance size exclusion chromatograph coupled with multi-angle laser light scattering (HPSEC-MALLS). The relative weight average molecular weight for ARPP-70a was determined to be 14.8 kDa, and the molar ratio of glucose to galactose was 1.0:3.2. The structure of ARPP-70a was elucidated to be glucogalactan, with backbone comprising β-1,4-linked Gal p and some α-1,4-linked Glc p. The conformation characteristics of ARPP-70a were supposed to exist as a random coil chain in 0.1 M NaNO 3 solution. Moreover, in vitro antioxidant activity assays revealed ARPP-70a exhibited appreciable antioxidant potential. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to obtain this type of glucogalactan, and provide systematic information on its structural and conformational properties. This study improved the understanding of the physicochemical characteristics of AR polysaccharide, which is beneficial for its further application in food and medicinal industry. • The function of NK cells in peripheral blood of SFTS patients was impaired. • The expression of Siglec-9 in circulating NK cells of SFTS patients was decreased. • Expression of Siglec-9 on NK cells was negatively correlated with DBV viral load. • The decrease of Siglec-9+NK cells may cause NK cell dysfunction in SFTS patients. To investigate the changes and mechanism of Siglec-9 on NK cells in peripheral blood of patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). First, we used single-cell RNA sequencing to analyze the frequency of NK cells in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells (PBMCs) of SFTS patients and healthy controls (HCs), as well as the differences in the genes on NK cells. Secondly, we analyzed the expression of Siglec-9 and other receptors on NK cells by flow cytometry. Thirdly, we analyzed the correlation between Siglec-9 on NK cells and DBV viral load in plasma. Compared with HCs, the frequency of NK cells in peripheral blood of SFTS patients was significantly decreased, and the activating receptors on NK cells were reduced. The expression of Siglec-9 on NK cells and the frequency of Siglec-9+NK cells decreased significantly in SFTS patients. The expression of Siglec-9 on CD16+CD56dim NK cells was negatively correlated with DBV viral load. In addition, Siglec-9+NK cells expressed higher levels of activating receptors and exhibited stronger effector functions than Siglec-9−NK cells. The decreased expression of Siglec-9 on NK cells predicts NK cell dysfunction in SFTS patients, suggesting that Siglec-9 may be a potential marker for functional NK cell subsets in SFTS patients. Despite the proliferation of nudge research in the last few decades, very little published work aims to nudge the behavior of policymakers. Here we explore the impact of a well-established nudge on policymakers in the Northwest Territories of Canada. In a pre-registered randomized controlled trial, we emailed an invitation to policymakers (N = 263) to attend an online briefing on gendered impacts of policy. In the treatment condition (N = 133), the invitation contained personal stories of two women whose lives were disproportionally impacted by public policies more than men. In the control condition (N = 130), the invitation did not contain such stories. After the briefing, we sent all participants in both conditions a link to a public pledge that they could sign. The pledge was to lead and advocate for equity-oriented policymaking. Contrary to our prediction, there was a small backfiring effect where policymakers in the treatment condition (3.0%) were less likely to attend the briefing than the control condition (7.7%). However, two policymakers (1.5%) in the treatment condition signed the public pledge compared to one (0.8%) in the control condition. The current findings reveal the limits of using personal stories as a nudge to influence policymakers. We discuss insights gained from this experiment and follow-up debriefings with policymakers on how to improve future behavioral interventions designed to nudge policymakers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• EA at Lianquan(CV23) and Fengfu(GV16) could regulate swallowing function via activating swallowing-related motor neurons in nucleus ambiguus. • The integrity of NA plays an important role in EA regulating swallowing function. • Electroacupuncture (EA) could activate the c-fos expression in the nucleus ambiguus (NA). To observe the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) on swallowing and its underlying mechanism, 32 Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were chose and the electrophysiology was used to detect the discharge of nucleus ambiguus (NA) after EA at CV23 (Lianquan), GV16 (Fengfu), and other acupoints. The swallowing-related motor neuron was identified by antidromic stimulation through recurrent laryngeal nerve. Meanwhile, the swallowing numbers were induced by Double-distilled water (DDW) and the neuron discharges were recorded before and after EA. Beside, 50 SD rats were used for testing the c-fos expressions in NA after EA at different acupoints and the other 80 SD rats were used for chemical damage through the microinjection to bilateral NA. 58 neurons provided complete data after histological identification. And two types of swallowing-related (SR) motor neurons were identified, named spontaneous and silent neurons. We found that the onset latency of the first swallow was shorter and the swallowing numbers were increased after EA at CV23 than the other acupoints (P < 0.01). The excitatory neuron response rates were 66.67%, 71.11%, 42.22% and 35.56% for CV23, GV16, PC6 (Neiguan), and ST36 (Zusanli), respectively. The c-fos expressions on CV23 and GV16 groups were significantly higher than the other groups (P < 0.05). After chemical damage, the swallowing numbers could not be regulated by EA, but could be regulated by EA after fake damage. Abstract The volume of solid waste has increased significantly in the past century, directly contributing to global environmental problems. Public engagement with waste sorting is crucial to the diversion of solid waste from landfill and the reduction of contamination in waste streams. The current study aims to promote recycling and composting accuracy via a digital sorting game that provides immediate feedback. In this game, participants manually sorted items into four bins (food scraps, recyclable container, paper, and garbage) via a computer interface, and received immediate feedback on their performance after each trial. We found that immediate feedback improved sorting accuracy as measured by correct key presses (Experiment 1) or motion trajectory (Replication 1), even when feedback was no longer provided. This improvement in sorting accuracy remained a week after playing the game (Replication 2). We then implemented this game in residences, and found that after residents played this game, the weight of compost materials increased while the contamination rate decreased (Experiment 2). These findings suggest that providing immediate feedback in a digital sorting game can be an effective tool to engage and educate the public to increase recycling and composting rates. Abstract—The microbial diversity and community structure of activated sludge in the biological treatment units of five municipal WWTPs and two industrial WWTPs were studied. The results showed that industrial WWTPs had the lowest diversity and abundance of activated sludge microbial communities, indicating that industrial wastewater inhibited the growth of microbial communities. In the correlation analysis between environmental factors and microbial diversity indices, pH and COD showed a significant negative correlation with the number of OTUs and microbial diversity. The main dominant microbial genus were Hyphomicrobium, Acinetobacter, Novosphingobium, Acinetobacter, and Meiothermus. Both principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and phylogenetic analysis showed large differences in the structure of municipal and industrial microbial community structure, indicating the uniqueness of the activated sludge community structure in industrial WWTPs. Gene function predictions indicated that LJ had higher metabolic function associated with inorganic salt and lipid metabolism. Further co-occurrence network analysis showed that many of the key industrial WWTPs belonged in the same module, suggesting that they had strong interspecific interactions but were relatively independent from other microorganisms in the municipal WWTPs. Public festivals and events generate a tremendous amount of waste, especially when they involve food and drink. To reduce contamination across waste streams, we evaluated three types of interventions at a public event. In a randomized control trial, we examined the impact of volunteer staff assistance, bin tops, and sample 3D items with bin tops, on the amount of contamination and the weight of the organics, recyclable containers, paper, and garbage bins at a public event. The event was the annual Apple Festival held at the University of British Columbia, which was attended by around 10,000 visitors. We found that contamination was the lowest in the volunteer staff condition among all conditions. Specifically, volunteer staff reduced contamination by 96.1% on average in the organics bin, 96.9% in the recyclable containers bin, 97.0% in the paper bin, and 84.9% in the garbage bin. Our interventions did not influence the weight of the materials in the bins. This finding highlights the impact of volunteers on reducing contamination in waste streams at events, and provides suggestions and implications for waste management for event organizers to minimize contamination in all waste streams to achieve zero waste goals. The interfacial energies of MC/γ-Fe and formation energies of MC carbides have been investigated using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Results show that the replacement of Nb by Mo in the NbC lattice is unfavorable with respect to the formation energy. However, it reduces the lattice parameter of MC and decreases the $$\sigma_{\text{chemical}}$$ (interfacial chemical energy) of MC/γ-Fe, thus favoring the formation of complex (Nb, Mo)C carbide. The substitution of Nb by Mo at the interface of MC/γ-Fe system promotes the hybridizations of Mo-1NNFe and C-1NNFe (or 2NNFe) (the first or second nearest neighboring Fe atoms), which leads to a decrease in $$\sigma_{\text{chemical}}$$ . The influence of bond energy is estimated using the discrete lattice plane/nearest neighbor broken bond (DLP/NNBB) model. It is found that the reduced $$\sigma_{\text{chemical}}$$ is attributed to the much smaller value of $$e_{{{\rm{Fe-C}}}} - e_{{{\rm{Mo-C}}}}$$ (the difference between Fe-C and Mo-C interactions) compared to $$e_{{{\rm{Fe-C}}}} - e_{{{\rm{Nb-C}}}}$$ (the difference between Fe-C and Nb-C interactions). Most real-world judgments and decisions require the consideration of multiple types of evidence. For example, judging the severity of environmental damage, medical illness, or negative economic trends often involves tracking and integrating evidence from multiple sources (i.e. different natural disasters, physical symptoms, or financial indicators). We hypothesized that the requirement to track and integrate across distinct types of evidence would affect severity judgments of multifaceted problems, compared to simpler problems. To test this, we used scenarios depicting crop damage. Each scenario involved either two event types (i.e. mold damage and insect damage), or one event type. Participants judged the quality of the crop following each scenario. In Experiments 1 and 2, subjective judgments were attenuated if the scenario depicted multiple event types, relative to scenarios depicting single event types. This was evident as a shallower slope of subjective severity ratings, as a function of objectively quantifiable severity, for scenarios with multiple event types. In Experiment 3, we asked whether alternation between event types might contribute to this attenuation. Each scenario contained two event types, and the sequence of events either alternated frequently between types or was organized into two sequential groups. Subjective judgments were attenuated for scenarios with frequently alternating sequences. The results demonstrate that alternation between distinct event types attenuates subjective judgments of severity. This suggests that a requirement to integrate evidence across multiple sources places extra demands on the cognitive system, which reduces the perceived evidence strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Few studies have examined the link between self-reported health (SRH) and subsequent mortality in developing countries, and very few considered mortality effects of changes in SRH. We examined the relationship between SRH and subsequent all cause or cause-specific mortality in Thailand. We also noted if mortality varied after people changed their SRH.Methods: We used longitudinal data including SRH from a nationwide Thai Cohort Study (baseline 2005-follow-up 2009) and linked to official death records (2005-2012). Cox regression examined the association between SRH in 2005 and subsequent all-cause mortality or cause-specific mortality, with results given as confounder-adjusted hazard ratios (HR). We further assessed association between changes in SRH during 2005-2009 and mortality from 2009 to 2012.Results: Poor SRH at baseline independently relates strongly with subsequent cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality (HR = 2.8, CI: 1.3-5.9) and "other" causes of death (HR = 1.9, CI: 1.1-3.3) but moderately with cancer mortality (HR = 1.4, CI: 0.7-3.0). SRH did not exhibit a relationship with injury mortality (HR = 1.0, CI: 0.5-2.1). Worsening SRH from 2005 to 2009 associated with increased mortality in 2009-2012 for females but not for males.Conclusions: In Thailand, SRH is a good predictor of population mortality due to internal causes (e.g. CVD). SRH is holistic, simple to measure and low cost; when repeated it measures dynamic health status. In many developing countries chronic diseases are emerging and morbidity information is limited. To address the drivers of biodiversity loss, conservation efforts must attend to public attitudes toward endangered species. Using sea otters as a species at risk, we examined how messaging shapes people’s attitudes toward this species. Participants viewed a message about sea otters that was either positive (sea otters as keystone species), negative (resource conflict with local fishermen), or neutral (biological facts). The impact of the message on people’s attitudes was measured using Kellert’s typology of basic attitudes toward wildlife. We found that the negative message promoted people’s interests in the practical value of sea otters (utilitarian-consumption attitudes), their habitats (utilitarian-habitat attitudes), and control over sea otters (dominionistic attitudes), even though the negative message was perceived as less convincing and believable than positive or neutral messages. The positive message decreased utilitarian-consumption attitudes, and the neutral message decreased utilitarian-habitat attitudes. Plastic pollution has become a major global conservation challenge. To reduce the generation of plastic waste, we designed and tested several behavioral interventions in a randomized control trial to reduce plastic waste in a high-rise office building. We randomly assigned eight floors in the building to four conditions: (1) simplified recycling signage, (2) signage with a marine animal trapped in plastic debris, (3) signage with a pledge that invited people to be plastic wise to protect ocean life, and (4) control. We found that the signage with the animal reduced plastic waste by 17%, the largest effect among the other conditions. After implementing the signage to the entire building, we found an overall reduction in plastic waste over 6 weeks. The current study demonstrates the effectiveness of visualizing marine consequences of plastic waste and provides a behavioral solution connecting disposal actions and the downstream consequences for plastic waste reduction. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a Th cell-mediated inflammatory demyelinating autoimmune disease. MS cannot be cured, and long-term drug treatment is still needed for MS patients. In this study, we examined the effect of belinostat, a pan-histone deacetylase inhibitor (HDACi), on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and elucidated its mechanism of action. We found that belinostat alleviates the clinical symptoms, histopathological central nervous system (CNS) inflammation and demyelination outcomes in EAE mice. Compared to the MS oral drug dimethyl fumarate (DMF) (100 mg/kg), belinostat (30 mg/kg) treatment exhibited better efficacy in improving the clinical symptoms of EAE mice. Belinostat treatment significantly suppressed the activation of M1 microglia and the proinflammatory cytokine expression; but it had no effects on the M2 microglial polarization. Belinostat also decreased both NO and iNOS levels in LPS-stimulated BV2 microglia. Accordingly, belinostat treatment of EAE mice significantly inhibited activation of the TLR2/MyD88 signaling pathway and downregulated the expression of HDAC3 while upregulating the acetylated NF-κB p65 levels. Taken together, these data demonstrate for the first time that belinostat ameliorates EAE in mice through inhibiting neuroinflammation via suppressing M1 microglial polarization, and implicating belinostat as a potential candidate for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. The simple and reliable detection of microRNAs is of great significance for studying the biological functions, molecular diagnosis, disease treatment and targeted drug therapy of microRNA. In this study, we introduced a novel Ti3C2Tx (MXene) aerogels (denoted as MXA) composite gold nano-particles (AuNPs)-modified disposable carbon fiber paper (CFP) electrode for the label-free and sensitive detection of miRNA-155. Firstly, in the presence of MXene, graphene oxide (GO) and ethylenediamine (EDA), the 3D MXene hydrogel was formed by self-assembly method, and then adding the freeze-dried 3D MXA dropwise to CFP. Subsequently, electrodepositing AuNPs on the CFP/MXA was done to construct a 3D disposable DNA-circuit test strip with excellent interface. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the detection limit of 3D disposable DNA circuit strip for miRNA-155 was 136 aM (S/N = 3). The CFP/MXA/AuNPs (CMA) electrode also has a wide dynamic range (20 fM to 0.4 μM), with a span of 4 orders of magnitude. Notably, we also tested the practicality of the sensor in 8 clinical samples. Despite numerous efforts, the accurate determination of trace biomolecules with zeptomolar sensitivity remains elusive. Here, a 3D carbon nanomaze (CAM) electrode for the ultrasensitive detection of trace biomolecules such as nucleic acids, proteins, and extracellular vesicles is reported. The CAM electrode consists of an interlaced carbon fiber array on which intercrossed graphene sheets are vertically tethered in situ, permitting local confinement of trace molecules to increase molecular hybridization efficiency. Furthermore, a self‐assembled DNA tetrahedron array adopts a rigid spatial conformation to guarantee the controllable arrangement of immobilized biological probes, facilitating analytical sensitivity and reproducibility. In a proof‐of‐concept experiment on detecting microRNA‐155, a linearity of 0.1 aM to 100 nM and a sensitivity of 0.023 aM (23 zM) are achieved. With the optimal parameters, the proposed nanoelectrode demonstrates encouraging consistency with quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction during clinical sample detection. Through simple functionalization by appending various biomolecular probes of interest, the developed CAM platform with ultrahigh sensitivity can be exploited as a versatile tool in environmental, chemistry, biology, and healthcare fields. The current biodiversity crisis involves major shifts in biological communities at local and regional scales. The consequences for Earth's life‐support systems are increasingly well‐studied, but knowledge of how community shifts affect cultural services associated with wildlife lags behind. We integrated bird census data (3 years across 150 point‐count locations) with questionnaire surveys (>400 people) to evaluate changes in culturally important species across climate and land‐use gradients in Costa Rica. For farmers, urbanites, and birdwatchers alike, species valued for identity, bequest, birdwatching, acoustic aesthetics, and education were more likely to occupy wetter regions and forested sites, whereas disliked species tended to occupy drier and deforested sites. These results suggest that regional climate drying and habitat conversion in the Neotropics are likely to threaten the most culturally important bird species. This study provides a novel and generalizable pathway for assessing the effects of environmental changes on cultural services and integrating the sociocultural and ecological dimensions of biodiversity. Neuroinflammation is considered as one of the crucial pathogenesis in promoting neurodegenerative progress of Alzheimer's disease (AD). As complementary and alternative therapy, electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation has been widely used in clinical practice for anti-inflammation. However, whether EA promotes the cognitive deficits resulting from neuroinflammation in AD remains unclear. In this study, the presenilin 1 and 2 conditional double knockout (PS cDKO) mice, exhibited a series of AD-like pathology, robust neuroinflammatory responses, and memory deficits, were used to evaluate the potential neuroprotective effect of EA at Baihui (GV 20) and Shenting (GV 24) by behavioral testing, electrophysiology recording, and molecular biology analyzing. First, we observed that EA improved memory deficits and impaired synaptic plasticity. Moreover, EA possesses an ability to suppress the hyperphosphorylated tau and robust elevated NLRP3, ASC, Caspase-1, IL-1β, and IL-18 in PS cDKO mice. Importantly, MCC950, a potent and selective inhibitor of NLPR3 inflammasome, has similar effects on inhibiting the hyperphosphorylated tau and the robust elevated NLRP3 components and neuroinflammatory responses of PS cDKO mice as well as EA treatment. Furthermore, EA treatment is not able to further improve the AD-like phenotypes of PS cDKO mice in combination with the MCC950 administration. Therefore, EA stimulation at GV 20 and GV 24 acupoints may be a potential alternative therapy for deterring cognitive deficits in AD through suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Herein, a three-dimensional graphene wall (GWs) and nano-Cu 2 O modified carbon fiber paper (CFP) electrode were used to develop a disposable and sensitive non-enzymatic glucose sensor. This sensing interface of GWs/Cu 2 O consists of an interlaced CFP on which intercrossed graphene walls (GWs) were vertically tethered in situ by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD), and Cu 2 O nanoparticles (NPs) were evenly grew on the 3D GWs layer and skeleton through the complete thermal decomposition of copper acetate (Cu (CH 3 COO) 2) at high temperature. The CFP/GWs/Cu 2 O shows a large specific surface area and rich solution diffusion channels, which can expose more catalytic active sites without Nafion fixation film, thus greatly improving the electrocatalytic performance of this glucose sensor. The CFP/GWs/Cu 2 O sensor shows excellent catalytic performance to glucose with a linear detection range of 0.5 μM–5166 μM, LOD of 0.21 μM, and response time <4 s. This kind of disposable and sensitive electrode can capable of controlling uniform growth and accurate quantification, and has great development potential in the field of medical detection and the commercialization of wearable sensors. A challenge for the visual system is to detect regularities from multiple dimensions of the environment. Here we examine how regularities in multiple feature dimensions are distinguished from randomness. Participants viewed a matrix containing a structured half and a random half, and judged whether the boundary between the two halves was horizontal or vertical. In Experiments 1 and 2, the cells in the matrix varied independently in the color dimension (red or blue), the shape dimension (circle or square), or both. We found that boundary discrimination accuracy was higher when regularities were present in the color dimension than in the shape dimension, but the accuracy was the same when regularities were present in the color dimension alone or in both dimensions. By adding a third surface dimension (hollow or filled) in Experiments 3 and 4, we found that discrimination accuracy was higher when regularities were present in the surface dimension than in the color dimension, but was the same when regularities were present in the surface dimension alone or in all three dimensions. Moreover, when there were two conflicting boundaries, participants chose the boundary defined by the surface dimension, followed by the color dimension as more visible than the shape dimension (Experiments 5 and 6). Finally, participants were faster at detecting differences in the surface dimension, followed by the color and the shape dimensions (Experiments 7 and 8). The widespread heavy metal pollution endangers human health; hence, accurate on-site detection and quantification of heavy metal content in the surroundings is a vital step in reversing the harmful effect. Herein, an electrochemical sensor based on flexible cerium metal–organic framework@multi-walled carbon nanotubes/carbon cloth (CeMOF@MWCNTs/CC) was constructed for simultaneous on-site detection of Cd2+ and Pb2+ in food and water samples. The rich carboxyl groups of MWCNTs provided abundant sites for the adsorption of Cd2+ and Pb2+, and the mutual conversion of Ce3+ and Ce4+ in CeMOF facilitated the reduction and reoxidation of metal ions. The prepared electrode showed excellent performance in the simultaneous measurement of Cd2+ and Pb2+, with detection limits of 2.2 ppb and 0.64 ppb, respectively. More importantly, the sensing platform has been successfully used to detect simultaneously Cd2+ and Pb2+ in grain and water samples, and the detection results were consistent with the standard methods, showing great potential in environmental monitoring and food safety. Abstract Ventrolateral medulla(VLM) was one of the essential part of central pattern generator(CPG) in swallowing and electro-acupuncture(EA) was an important intervention in swallowing disorder. But the effect and mechanism of EA at acupoints on swallowing were unknown. The present aim to detect the effect of EA at Lianquan (CV23) on swallowing and swallowing-related(SR) interneuron in VLM. Thirty-six Sprague-Dawley rats were operated and the swallowing reflex was induced through Double distilled water (DDW) infusion. Simultaneously, the numbers of swallowing were recorded. Then EA was given at Lianquan and Neiguan (PC6) and the neuron discharges in VLM were detected. A total of 72 neurons were recorded, 60 of which were correctly recorded after histology identification. Two types of SR neurons were found and the numbers of swallowing increased after EA at CV23 and PC6 compared with no EA group. The neuron response rates were 78.3% and 50% for EA at CV23 and PC6 respectively with significant difference (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the neuron spike patterns were changed after EA at CV23 and PC6. In addition, twenty-four rats were used for immunofluorescence after EA at CV23 and PC6. The results showed that c-fos positive cells in CV23 group were 20.63 ± 2.35, while PC6 group was 14.13 ± 1.78 and 6.88 ± 1.42 in control group. There were significant difference between them (P < 0.05). Creating behavior change to mobilize transitions toward sustainability is a significant challenge of our time. Inspired by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's Farmer Field School, we developed a novel community-based education program to engage people in local sustainability topics. In the Sustainable Communities Field School (Field School) program, advertised as team building tours, participants from local organizations are guided by instructors through University of British Columbia Botanical Garden, while receiving verbal and experiential education on topics of food systems and choices, biodiversity conservation, water conservation, and waste reduction. We found that after the Field School program, participants were significantly more knowledgeable about environmental issues, more connected to nature, showed greater intentions and willingness to engage in sustainability actions compared to garden visitors from the general public who did not go through the program. The results suggest that interactive sustainability education in a botanical garden setting can be a useful education model to mobilize public engagement on sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Aims: This study investigated the role of the microRNA miR-298 and its target Act1 in ischemic stroke. Methods: Cell viability was assessed with the 3-(4,5-dimethythiazol-2- yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay. Apoptotic cells were detected by flow cytometry, and mRNA and protein expression were assessed by quantitative real-time PCR and western blotting, respectively. The regulatory relationship between miR-298 and Act1 was evaluated with the luciferase assay. To clarify the role of Act1 following ischemic stroke, the transcript was knocked down by short interfering RNA. The in vitro findings were validated in a mouse model of middle cerebral artery occlusion by administration of miR-298 mimic. Results: Act1 was upregulated whereas miR-298 was downregulated in ischemic stroke. miR-298 overexpression by transfection of a mimic suppressed Act1 protein levels in vitro and in vivo, and the luciferase assay showed that miR-298 directly binds to the 3’ untranslated region of the Act1 transcript. miR-298 overexpression enhanced cell apoptosis and autophagy and exacerbated ischemic infarction and neurological deficits, effects that were exerted via negative regulation of Act1/c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling and downstream autophagy pathways. Conclusions: Upregulation of miR-298 following ischemic stroke promotes brain injury in vitro and vivo by inhibiting the Act1/JNK/NF-κB signaling cascade and the downstream autophagy pathway. A pervasive bias in the subjective concept of randomness is that people often expect random sequences to exhibit more alternations than produced by genuine random processes. What is less known is the stability of this bias. Here, we examine two important aspects of the over-alternation bias: first, whether this bias is present in stimuli that vary across feature dimensions, sensory modalities, presentation modes and probing methods, and, second, how consistent the bias is across these stimulus variations. In Experiment 1, participants adjusted sequences until they looked maximally random. The sequences were presented as temporal streams of colors, shapes, auditory tones or tiled as spatial matrices. In Experiment 2, participants produced random matrices by adjusting the color of each cell. We replicated the findings using a within-subjects design in Experiment 3. We found that participants judged and produced over-alternating stimuli as the most random. Importantly, this bias was consistent across presentation modes (temporal vs spatial), feature dimensions (color vs shape), sensory modalities (visual vs auditory), speed (fast vs slow), stimulus size (small vs large matrices) and probing methods (adjusting the generating process vs individual bits). Increasing volumes of solid waste, implicated in environmental pollution and health problems, are central to the current environmental crisis. In two randomized field experiments, we demonstrate that convenience dramatically boosts recycling and composting rates in multi-family dwellings and university residences. When compost bins were placed on each floor in a multi-family residence, instead of on the ground floor, composting rates increased by 70%, diverting 27 kilograms of compost from the landfill per unit per year. When recycling stations were placed just meters from suites in student residences, instead of in the basement, recycling increased by 147% (container), and 137% (paper), and composting increased by 139%, diverting 23, 22, and 14 kilograms of containers, paper, and compost, respectively, from the landfill per person per year. Simply making recycling and composting convenient can significantly increase waste diversion, and as such this single intervention has important implications for waste management and environmental policy. It has been well established that better educated individuals enjoy better health and longevity. In theory, the educational gradients in health could be flattening if diminishing returns to improved average education levels and the influence of earlier population health interventions outweigh the gradient-steepening effects of new medical and health technologies. This paper documents how the gradients are evolving in China, a rapidly developing country, about which little is known on this topic. Based on recent mortality data and nationally representative health surveys, we find large and, in some cases, steepening educational gradients. We also find that the gradients vary by cohort, gender and region. Further, we find that the gradients can only partially be accounted for by economic factors. These patterns highlight the double disadvantage of those with low education, and suggest the importance of policy interventions that foster both aspects of human capital for them. Conservation of biodiversity is determined in part by human preferences. Preferences relevant to conservation have been examined largely via explicit measures (e.g., a self-reported degree of liking), with implicit measures (e.g., preconscious, automatic evaluations) receiving relatively less attention. This is the case despite psychological evidence from other contexts that implicit preferences are more informative of behavior. Thus, the type of measure that predicts conservation intentions for biodiversity is unknown. We conducted three studies to examine conservation intentions in light of people’s explicit and implicit preferences toward four endangered species (sea otter, American badger, caribou, yellow-breasted chat) and four biomes (forest, ocean, grassland, tundra). In Study 1 (n = 55), we found that people implicitly preferred caribou most, but explicitly preferred sea otter most, with a significant multiple regression where participants’ explicit preferences dictated their stated intended donations for conservation of each species. In Study 2 (n = 57) we found that people implicitly and explicitly preferred forest and ocean over grassland and tundra. Explicit rather than implicit preferences predicted the intended donation for conservation of the ocean biome. Study 3 involved a broader online sample of participants (n = 463) and also found that explicit preferences dictated the intended donations for conservation of biomes and species. Our findings reveal discrepancies between implicit and explicit preferences toward species, but not toward biomes. Importantly, the results demonstrate that explicit rather than implicit preferences predict conservation intentions for biodiversity. To simultaneously achieve thorough purification of acetylene and maximum ethene increment, a sea urchinlike trimetallic PdAuAg mesocrystal catalyst as targeting sample and cuboctahedral trimetallic PdAuAg x and bimetallic catalyst as control samples were prepared by a co-reduction method, immobilized on MgAl hydrotalcite. Compared with bimetallic PdAu and PdAg catalysts, trimetallic PdAuAg x catalyst gave prior selectivity due to the positive synergetic effect. Significantly, PdAuAg 2 mesocrystal catalyst exhibited a turnover frequency of 0.063 s −1 , 46.5% higher than that of cuboctahedral PdAuAg 2 catalyst. A 76.2% ethene selectivity was achieved for the thorough purification of acetylene over PdAuAg mesocrystal catalyst with H 2 :C 2 H 2 of 2:1. Further improving H 2 :C 2 H 2 to 3, 76.5% yield can be maintained at 140 °C. Enhanced activity of the mesocrystal catalyst could be attributed to a high concentration of defect sites and a low activation barrier. Improved ethene selectivity could be ascribed to the increase in the (1 1 1)/(1 0 0) facets ratio and the formation of a Pd-C phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to study the metal pollution in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, samples were collected from 12 selected sites along the river, in Gansu, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia, in October 2014. The concentrations of Aluminum (Al), Arsenic (As), Barium (Ba), Beryllium (Be), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Manganese (Mn), Nickel (Ni), Strontium (Sr), Thallium (Tl), Vanadium (V) and Zinc (Zn) in surface water and sediment samples were determined, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS). Compared with water quality standards from China, the US EPA and WHO, Al, Cr, Cd, Mn and Pb were recognized as water pollutants. As, Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and V exceeded the local background values in soil. Ecological risk assessment of sediments showed that most sampling sites lay in the level of middle to high risk and that Cd, with a high, increased the potential ecological risk indexin every sampling site. The parameters for human health risk assessment—the Hazard Quotient (HQingestion,HQdermal) and the Hazard Index (HI)—demonstrated that As and Tl were the most important pollutants in this area, and that oral intake was the main exposure pathway. This study selected solid wastes, such as rice husk ash (RHA), inactive Saccharomyces cerevisiae powder (ISP), and rice husk (RH), as the potential adsorbents for the removal of Fe(II) and Mn(II) in aqueous solution. The structural characteristics, functional groups, and elemental compositions were determined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier translation infrared spectrum (FT-IR) analyses, respectively. Then the influence on the Fe(II) and Mn(II) removing efficiency by the factors, such as pH, adsorbent dosage, initial Fe(II) and Mn(II) concentration, and contact time, was investigated by the static batch test. The adsorption isotherm study results show that Langmuir equation can better fit the Fe(II) and Mn(II) adsorption process by the three adsorbents. The maximum adsorption amounts for Fe(II) were 6.211 mg/g, 4.464 mg/g, and 4.049 mg/g by RHA, ISP, and RH and for Mn(II) were 3.016 mg/g, 2.229 mg/g, and 1.889 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics results show that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model can better fit the Fe(II) and Mn(II) adsorption process. D-R model and thermodynamic parameters hint that the adsorption processes of Fe(II) and Mn(II) on the three adsorbents took place physically and the processes were feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a common autoimmune disease that inevitably causes inflammatory nerve demyelination. However, an effective approach to prevent its course is still lacking and urgently needed. Recently, the adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR) has emerged as a novel inflammation regulator. Manipulation of A2AR activity may suppress the MS process and protect against nerve damage. To test this hypothesis, we treated murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), a model for MS, with the selective A2AR agonist, CGS21680 (CGS). We evaluated the effects of CGS on the pathological features of EAE progression, including CNS cellular infiltration, inflammatory cytokine expression, lymphocyte proliferation, and cell surface markers. Treatment with CGS significantly suppressed specific lymphocyte proliferation, reduced infiltration of CD4 + T lymphocytes, and attenuated the expression of inflammatory cytokines, which in turn inhibited the EAE progression. For the first time, we demonstrate that CGS can increase the intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca 2+ ] i ) in murine lymphocytes, which may be the mechanism underlying the suppressive effects of CGS-induced A2AR activation on EAE progression. Our findings strongly suggest that A2AR is a potential therapeutic target for MS and provide insight into the mechanism of action of A2AR agonists, which may offer a therapeutic option for this disease. The current study investigates the existence of 15 phthalate esters (PAEs) in surface soils (27 samples) collected from 9 different facility agriculture sites in the black soil region of northeast China, during the process of agricultural production (comprising only three seasons spring, summer and autumn). Concentrations of the 15 PAEs detected significantly varied from spring to autumn and their values ranged from 1.37 to 4.90 mg/kg-dw, with a median value of 2.83 mg/kg-dw. The highest concentration of the 15 PAEs (4.90 mg/kg-dw) was determined in summer when mulching film was used in the greenhouses. Probably an increase in environmental temperature was a major reason for PAE transfer from the mulching film into the soil and coupled with the increased usage of chemical fertilizers in greenhouses. Results showed that of the 15 PAEs, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate(DEHP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), diethyl phthalate (DEP) and dimethyl phthalate (DMP) were in abundance with the mean value of 1.12 ± 0.22, 0.46 ± 0.05, 0.36 ± 0.04, and 0.17 ± 0.01 mg/kg-dw, respectively; and their average contributions in spring, summer, and autumn ranged between 64.08 and 90.51% among the 15 PAEs. The results of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicated the concentration of these four main PAEs significantly differed among the facility agricultures investigated, during the process of agricultural production. In comparison with foreign and domestic results of previous researches, it is proved that the black soils of facility agriculture in northeast China show higher pollution situation comparing with non-facility agriculture soils. The poor often behave in less capable ways, which can further perpetuate poverty. We hypothesize that poverty directly impedes cognitive function and present two studies that test this hypothesis. First, we experimentally induced thoughts about finances and found that this reduces cognitive performance among poor but not in well-off participants. Second, we examined the cognitive function of farmers over the planting cycle. We found that the same farmer shows diminished cognitive performance before harvest, when poor, as compared with after harvest, when rich. This cannot be explained by differences in time available, nutrition, or work effort. Nor can it be explained with stress: Although farmers do show more stress before harvest, that does not account for diminished cognitive performance. Instead, it appears that poverty itself reduces cognitive capacity. We suggest that this is because poverty-related concerns consume mental resources, leaving less for other tasks. These data provide a previously unexamined perspective and help explain a spectrum of behaviors among the poor. We discuss some implications for poverty policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, adsorption of zinc onto the adsorbent (untreated rice husk and NaOH-treated rice husk) was examined. During the removal process, batch technique was used, and the effects of pH and contact time were investigated. Langmuir isotherm was applied in order to determine the efficiency of NaOH-treated rice husk used as an adsorbent. The zinc adsorption was fast, and equilibrium was attained within 30 min. The maximum removal ratios of zinc for untreated rice husk and NaOH-treated rice husk after 1.5 h were 52.3% and 95.2%, respectively, with initial zinc concentration of 25 mg/L and optimum pH of 4.0. Data obtained from batch adsorption experiments fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model. Maximum adsorption capacity of zinc onto untreated rice husk and NaOH-treated rice husk was 12.41 mg/g, and 20.08 mg/g respectively, at adsorbent dosage of 1g/L at 25°C. The nature of functional groups (i.e., amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl) and metal ion interactions was examined by the FT-IR technique. It was concluded that the NaOH-treated rice husk had stronger adsorption capacity for Zn2+ compared with the untreated rice husk. The single tumor antigen does not have enough specificity and sensitivity to meet the accurate diagnostic criteria, and single antigen measurement is often prone to false negative and false positive perceptions. Therefore, simultaneous monitoring of multiple tumor antigens related to precise tumors in serum samples has become an interesting and encouraging analytical method. In this work, we demonstrated an electrochemical biosensor based on multiple signal amplification methods, and simultaneously detect two lung cancer markers, cytokeratin 19 fragment 21-1 (CYFRA21-1) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Large number of gold nanoparticles distributed on the surface of three-dimensional graphene (3D-G), poly-thionine (pThi) and poly-m-Cresol purple (pMCP) not only provide large number of binding sites for antigen and antibody, but also enhance the electrochemical signal of biosensor and greatly improves the sensitivity of the biosensor. The detection linear range extends from 0.5 to 200 ng/mL, with low detection limits (LOD) of 0.18 ng/mL and 0.31 ng/mL for CYFRA21-1 and CEA, respectively. Overall, this kind of immune-biosensor provides great potential for the simultaneous detection of multiple targets in early clinical diagnosis. Goal-directed navigation requires learning strategies that are efficient and minimize costs. In some cases it may be desirable to flexibly adjust behavioral responses depending on the cues that vary from one episode to the next. In others, successful navigation might be achieved with inflexible, habit-like responses that reduce cognitive load. Adult neurogenesis is believed to contribute to the spatial processing functions of the hippocampus, particularly when behavioral flexibility is required. However, little is known about the role of neurogenesis in spatial navigation when goals are unpredictable or change repeatedly according to certain rules. We hypothesized that neurogenesis is necessary in a spatial navigation task that involves different patterns of reinforcement. Intact and neurogenesis-deficient rats were trained to escape to one of two possible platform locations in a spatial water maze. The platform either repeated in the same location for all trials in a day, alternated between two locations across trials, or randomly moved between the two locations. Neurogenesis selectively enhanced escape performance in the alternating condition, but not by improving platform choice accuracy. Instead, neurogenesis-intact rats made fewer search errors and developed an efficient habit-like strategy where they consistently swam to a preferred location. If the platform was not present, they proceeded to the other possible location. In contrast, neurogenesis-deficient rats were indecisive and navigationally less-efficient. Thus, in conditions where goals follow a predictable spatiotemporal pattern, adult neurogenesis promotes the adoption of navigation strategies that are spatially nonspecific but, nonetheless, accurate and efficient. • New method for capturing bird-related cultural ecosystem services and disservices. • We test this method with Costa Rican birds and three stakeholder groups. • Stakeholders perceived six distinct cultural service and disservice categories. • Birdwatchers ranked species higher in terms of their education scores. • Our results can help integrate stakeholders' perspectives in conservation planning. Despite the great cultural and economic benefits associated with birdwatching and other bird-related cultural ecosystem services (CES), little is known about the bird-related CES and disservices perceived by people, and how they differ across stakeholders and species. The goal of this study was to explore CES and disservices across three stakeholder groups in Northwestern Costa Rica. We conducted surveys (n = 404 total) in which we presented farmers (n = 140), urbanites (n = 149), and birdwatchers (n = 115) with illustrations and songs of bird species and collected participants' ratings on items designed to measure multiple CES and disservices. We found bird-related CES and disservices were perceived as six different categories: identity, bequest, education, birdwatching, acoustic aesthetic, and disservices. The three stakeholder groups expressed varying preferences across services, disservices, and species. Specifically, birdwatchers ranked species higher in terms of their education scores and lower in disservices scores compared to the other two groups, whereas farmers scored species higher on identity scores compared to the other two groups. Farmers and urbanites had remarkably similar perceptions towards birds in general, but differed from birdwatchers. Our approach represents a novel method for assessing CES and disservices associated with species that can be adapted and modified for different taxa and multiple geographical contexts.
