Artificial monopoles have been engineered in various systems, yet there has been no systematic study of the singular vector potentials associated with the monopole field. We show that the Dirac string, the line singularity of the vector potential, can be engineered, manipulated, and made manifest in a spinor atomic condensate. We elucidate the connection among spin, orbital degrees of freedom, and the artificial gauge, and show that there exists a mapping between the vortex filament and the Dirac string. We also devise a proposal where preparing initial spin states with relevant symmetries can result in different vortex patterns, revealing an underlying correspondence between the internal spin states and the spherical vortex structures. Such a mapping also leads to a new way of constructing spherical Landau levels, and monopole harmonics. Mrk 501 is a prototypical high-synchrotron-peaked blazar (HBL) and serves as one of the primary targets for the {\it Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer} ({\it IXPE}). In this study, we report X-ray polarization measurements of Mrk 501 based on six {\it IXPE} observations. The detection of X-ray polarization at a confidence level exceeding 99\% is achieved in four out of the six observations conducted across the entire energy range (2--8 keV) of {\it IXPE}. The maximum polarization degree ($\Pi_{\rm X}$) is measured to be $15.8\%\pm2.8\%$, accompanied by a polarization angle ($\psi_{\rm X}$) of $98.0\deg\pm5.1\deg$ at a confidence level of $5.6 \sigma$. During the remaining two observations, only an upper limit of $\Pi_{\rm X}<$12\% could be derived at the 99\% confidence level. No temporal variability in polarization is observed throughout all six {\it IXPE} observations for Mrk 501. A discernible trend of energy-dependent variation in the polarization degree is detected in optical spectropolarimetry; however, no analogous indication is observed in $\Pi_{\rm X}$. The chromatic behavior of $\Pi$ and the consistent values of $\psi$ across different frequencies from X-rays to radio waves, along with the agreement between $\psi$ and jet position angle, strongly support the interpretation of the energy-stratified model with shock-accelerated particles in the jet of Mrk 501. A good translation should be faithful to the source and should respect the norms of the target language. We address a theoretical puzzle about the relationship between these objectives. On one hand, intuition and some prior work suggest that accuracy and fluency should trade off against each other, and that capturing every detail of the source can only be achieved at the cost of fluency. On the other hand, quality assessment researchers often suggest that accuracy and fluency are highly correlated and difficult for human raters to distinguish (Callison-Burch et al., 2007). We show that the tension between these views is an instance of Simpson's paradox, and that accuracy and fluency are positively correlated at the level of the corpus but trade off at the level of individual source segments. We further suggest that the relationship between accuracy and fluency is best evaluated at the segment (or sentence) level, and that the trade off between these dimensions has implications both for assessing translation quality and developing improved MT systems.

With the development of mobile communication and industrial internet technologies, the demand for robust absolute time synchronization based on network for diverse scenarios is significantly growing. TAP is a novel network timing method that aims to achieve sub-microsecond synchronization over air interface. This paper investigates the improvement and end-to-end realization of TAP. This paper first analyzes the effectiveness and deficiencies of TAP by establishing an equivalent clock model which evaluates TAP from timing error composition and allan variance. Second, this paper proposes a detailed base station and terminal design and the corresponding improvement of TAP. Both hardware compensation and protocol software design are taken into account so as to minimize timing error and system cost while maximizing compatibility with 3GPP. Finally, this paper presents a TAP end-to-end 5G prototype system developed based on software defined radio base station and COTS baseband module. The field test results show that the proposed scheme effectively solves the problems of TAP in application and robustly achieves 200ns level timing accuracy in various situations. The average accuracy with long observations can reach 1 nanosecond. It is 2$\sim$3 orders of magnitude better than common network timing methods, including NTP, PTP and the original TAP.

Action quality assessment (AQA) is to assess how well an action is performed. Previous works perform modelling by only the use of visual information, ignoring audio information. We argue that although AQA is highly dependent on visual information, the audio is useful complementary information for improving the score regression accuracy, especially for sports with background music, such as figure skating and rhythmic gymnastics. To leverage multimodal information for AQA, i.e., RGB, optical flow and audio information, we propose a Progressive Adaptive Multimodal Fusion Network (PAMFN) that separately models modality-specific information and mixed-modality information. Our model consists of with three modality-specific branches that independently explore modality-specific information and a mixed-modality branch that progressively aggregates the modality-specific information from the modality-specific branches. To build the bridge between modality-specific branches and the mixed-modality branch, three novel modules are proposed. First, a Modality-specific Feature Decoder module is designed to selectively transfer modality-specific information to the mixed-modality branch. Second, when exploring the interaction between modality-specific information, we argue that using an invariant multimodal fusion policy may lead to suboptimal results, so as to take the potential diversity in different parts of an action into consideration. Therefore, an Adaptive Fusion Module is proposed to learn adaptive multimodal fusion policies in different parts of an action. This module consists of several FusionNets for exploring different multimodal fusion strategies and a PolicyNet for deciding which FusionNets are enabled. Zero-shot action recognition (ZSAR) aims to learn an alignment model between videos and class descriptions of seen actions that is transferable to unseen actions. The text queries (class descriptions) used in existing ZSAR works, however, are often short action names that fail to capture the rich semantics in the videos, leading to misalignment. With the intuition that video content descriptions (e.g., video captions) can provide rich contextual information of visual concepts in videos, we propose to utilize human annotated video descriptions to enrich the semantics of the class descriptions of each action. However, all existing action video description datasets are limited in terms of the number of actions, the semantics of video descriptions, etc. To this end, we collect a large-scale action video descriptions dataset named ActionHub, which covers a total of 1,211 common actions and provides 3.6 million action video descriptions. With the proposed ActionHub dataset, we further propose a novel Cross-modality and Cross-action Modeling (CoCo) framework for ZSAR, which consists of a Dual Cross-modality Alignment module and a Cross-action Invariance Mining module. Specifically, the Dual Cross-modality Alignment module utilizes both action labels and video descriptions from ActionHub to obtain rich class semantic features for feature alignment. The Cross-action Invariance Mining module exploits a cycle-reconstruction process between the class semantic feature spaces of seen actions and unseen actions, aiming to guide the model to learn cross-action invariant representations. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our CoCo framework significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art on three popular ZSAR benchmarks (i.e., Kinetics-ZSAR, UCF101 and HMDB51) under two different learning protocols in ZSAR. We will release our code, models, and the proposed ActionHub dataset.

Object Re-identification (Re-ID) aims to identify specific objects across different times and scenes, which is a widely researched task in computer vision. For a prolonged period, this field has been predominantly driven by deep learning technology based on convolutional neural networks. In recent years, the emergence of Vision Transformers has spurred a growing number of studies delving deeper into Transformer-based Re-ID, continuously breaking performance records and witnessing significant progress in the Re-ID field. Offering a powerful, flexible, and unified solution, Transformers cater to a wide array of Re-ID tasks with unparalleled efficacy. This paper provides a comprehensive review and in-depth analysis of the Transformer-based Re-ID. In categorizing existing works into Image/Video-Based Re-ID, Re-ID with limited data/annotations, Cross-Modal Re-ID, and Special Re-ID Scenarios, we thoroughly elucidate the advantages demonstrated by the Transformer in addressing a multitude of challenges across these domains. Considering the trending unsupervised Re-ID, we propose a new Transformer baseline, UntransReID, achieving state-of-the-art performance on both single/cross modal tasks. For the under-explored animal Re-ID, we devise a standardized experimental benchmark and conduct extensive experiments to explore the applicability of Transformer for this task and facilitate future research. Finally, we discuss some important yet under-investigated open issues in the large foundation model era, we believe it will serve as a new handbook for researchers in this field. Human translators linger on some words and phrases more than others, and predicting this variation is a step towards explaining the underlying cognitive processes. Using data from the CRITT Translation Process Research Database, we evaluate the extent to which surprisal and attentional features derived from a Neural Machine Translation (NMT) model account for reading and production times of human translators. We find that surprisal and attention are complementary predictors of translation difficulty, and that surprisal derived from a NMT model is the single most successful predictor of production duration. Our analyses draw on data from hundreds of translators operating across 13 language pairs, and represent the most comprehensive investigation of human translation difficulty to date.

Text-to-image person re-identification (ReID) aims to retrieve images of a person based on a given textual description. The key challenge is to learn the relations between detailed information from visual and textual modalities. Existing works focus on learning a latent space to narrow the modality gap and further build local correspondences between two modalities. However, these methods assume that image-to-text and text-to-image associations are modality-agnostic, resulting in suboptimal associations. In this work, we show the discrepancy between image-to-text association and text-to-image association and propose CADA: Cross-Modal Adaptive Dual Association that finely builds bidirectional image-text detailed associations. Our approach features a decoder-based adaptive dual association module that enables full interaction between visual and textual modalities, allowing for bidirectional and adaptive cross-modal correspondence associations. Specifically, the paper proposes a bidirectional association mechanism: Association of text Tokens to image Patches (ATP) and Association of image Regions to text Attributes (ARA). We adaptively model the ATP based on the fact that aggregating cross-modal features based on mistaken associations will lead to feature distortion. For modeling the ARA, since the attributes are typically the first distinguishing cues of a person, we propose to explore the attribute-level association by predicting the masked text phrase using the related image region. Finally, we learn the dual associations between texts and images, and the experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our dual formulation. Codes will be made publicly available.

In the initial stages of operation for future tokamak, facing limited data availability, deploying data-driven disruption predictors requires optimal performance with minimal use of new device data. This paper studies the issue of data utilization in data-driven disruption predictor during cross tokamak deployment. Current predictors primarily employ supervised learning methods and require a large number of disruption and non-disruption shots for training. However, the scarcity and high cost of obtaining disruption shots for future tokamaks result in imbalanced training datasets, reducing the performance of supervised learning predictors. To solve this problem, we propose the Enhanced Convolutional Autoencoder Anomaly Detection (E-CAAD) predictor. E-CAAD can be only trained by normal samples from non-disruption shots and can also be trained by disruption precursor samples when disruption shots occur. This model not only overcomes the sample imbalance in supervised learning predictors, but also overcomes the inefficient dataset utilization faced by traditional anomaly detection predictors that cannot use disruption precursor samples for training, making it more suitable for the unpredictable datasets of future tokamaks. Compared to traditional anomaly detection predictor, the E-CAAD predictor performs better in disruption prediction and is deployed faster on new devices. Additionally, we explore strategies to accelerate deployment of E-CAAD predictor on the new device by using data from existing devices. Two deployment strategies are presented: mixing data from existing devices and fine-tuning the predictor trained on existing devices. Our comparisons indicate that the data from existing device can accelerate the deployment of predictor on new device. Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection is essential in identifying test samples that deviate from the in-distribution (ID) data upon which a standard network is trained, ensuring network robustness and reliability. This paper introduces OOD knowledge distillation, a pioneering learning framework applicable whether or not training ID data is available, given a standard network. This framework harnesses unknown OOD-sensitive knowledge from the standard network to craft a certain binary classifier adept at distinguishing between ID and OOD samples. To accomplish this, we introduce Confidence Amendment (CA), an innovative methodology that transforms an OOD sample into an ID one while progressively amending prediction confidence derived from the standard network. This approach enables the simultaneous synthesis of both ID and OOD samples, each accompanied by an adjusted prediction confidence, thereby facilitating the training of a binary classifier sensitive to OOD. Theoretical analysis provides bounds on the generalization error of the binary classifier, demonstrating the pivotal role of confidence amendment in enhancing OOD sensitivity. Extensive experiments spanning various datasets and network architectures confirm the efficacy of the proposed method in detecting OOD samples.

Ball mills play a critical role in modern mining operations, making their bearing failures a significant concern due to the potential loss of production efficiency and economic consequences. This paper presents an anomaly detection method based on Deep Convolutional Auto-encoding Neural Networks (DCAN) for addressing the issue of ball mill bearing fault detection. The proposed approach leverages vibration data collected during normal operation for training, overcoming challenges such as labeling issues and data imbalance often encountered in supervised learning methods. DCAN includes the modules of convolutional feature extraction and transposed convolutional feature reconstruction, demonstrating exceptional capabilities in signal processing and feature extraction. Additionally, the paper describes the practical deployment of the DCAN-based anomaly detection model for bearing fault detection, utilizing data from the ball mill bearings of Wuhan Iron & Steel Resources Group and fault data from NASA's bearing vibration dataset. Experimental results validate the DCAN model's reliability in recognizing fault vibration patterns. Contrastive learning has emerged as a promising paradigm for 3D open-world understanding, i.e., aligning point cloud representation to image and text embedding space individually. In this paper, we introduce MixCon3D, a simple yet effective method aiming to sculpt holistic 3D representation in contrastive language-image-3D pre-training. In contrast to point cloud only, we develop the 3D object-level representation from complementary perspectives, e.g., multi-view rendered images with the point cloud. Then, MixCon3D performs language-3D contrastive learning, comprehensively depicting real-world 3D objects and bolstering text alignment. Additionally, we pioneer the first thorough investigation of various training recipes for the 3D contrastive learning paradigm, building a solid baseline with improved performance. Extensive experiments conducted on three representative benchmarks reveal that our method significantly improves over the baseline, surpassing the previous state-of-the-art performance on the challenging 1,156-category Objaverse-LVIS dataset by 5.7%. The versatility of MixCon3D is showcased in applications such as text-to-3D retrieval and point cloud captioning, further evidencing its efficacy in diverse scenarios. Video domain generalization aims to learn generalizable video classification models for unseen target domains by training in a source domain. A critical challenge of video domain generalization is to defend against the heavy reliance on domain-specific cues extracted from the source domain when recognizing target videos. To this end, we propose to perceive diverse spatial-temporal cues in videos, aiming to discover potential domain-invariant cues in addition to domain-specific cues. We contribute a novel model named Spatial-Temporal Diversification Network (STDN), which improves the diversity from both space and time dimensions of video data. First, our STDN proposes to discover various types of spatial cues within individual frames by spatial grouping. Then, our STDN proposes to explicitly model spatial-temporal dependencies between video contents at multiple space-time scales by spatial-temporal relation modeling. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks of different types demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of our approach., Comment: Accepted to NeurIPS 2023. It is well known that tuna fish in the ocean can dynamically morph their median fins to achieve optimal hydrodynamic performance, e.g. linear acceleration and maneuverability. In this study, based on the previous studies about the median fin's hydrodynamic effects focusing on tethered conditions, we continue to explore the hydrodynamic function of tuna morphing dorsal fin in free swimming conditions for better approaching real-life situations.Here, we developed a tuna-inspired robotic fish platform that can swim independently in three dimensions, equipped with a biomimetic morphing dorsal fin magnetically attached to the robotic fish. Based on the free-swimming robotic fish platform, we investigated how the erected dorsal fin affects the speed, cost of transport (COT), and robotic fish's yaw angle at different frequencies and amplitudes. The erected dorsal fin plays a positive role in improving the yaw stability of robotic fish. However, it shows little influence on the speed and COT in our test.
