Imposing incommensurable periodicity on the periodic atomic lattice can lead to complex structural phases consisting of locally periodic structure bounded by topological defects. Twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) is an ideal material platform to study the interplay between different atomic periodicities, which can be tuned by twist angles between the layers, leading to moir\'e-of-moir\'e lattices. Interlayer and intralayer interactions between two interfaces in TTG transform this moir\'e-of-moir\'e lattice into an intricate network of domain structures at small twist angles, which can harbor exotic electronic behaviors. Here we report a complete structural phase diagram of TTG with atomic scale lattice reconstruction. Using transmission electron microscopy combined with a new interatomic potential simulation, we show that a cornucopia of large-scale moir\'e lattices, ranging from triangular, kagome, and a corner-shared hexagram-shaped domain pattern, are present. For small twist angles below 0.1{\deg}, all domains are bounded by a network of two-dimensional domain wall lattices. In particular, in the limit of small twist angles, the competition between interlayer stacking energy and the formation of discommensurate domain walls leads to unique spontaneous symmetry breaking structures with nematic orders, suggesting the pivotal role of long-range interactions across entire layers. The diverse tessellation of distinct domains, whose topological network can be tuned by the adjustment of the twist angles, establishes TTG as a platform for exploring the interplay between emerging quantum properties and controllable nontrivial lattices.

In 2016, an exposure meter was installed on the Lijiang Fiber-fed High-Resolution Spectrograph to monitor the coupling of starlight to the science fiber during observations. Based on it, we investigated a method to estimate the exposure flux of the CCD in real time by using the counts of the photomultiplier tubes (PMT) of the exposure meter, and developed a piece of software to optimize the control of the exposure time. First, by using flat-field lamp observations, we determined that there is a linear and proportional relationship between the total counts of the PMT and the exposure flux of the CCD. Second, using historical observations of different spectral types, the corresponding relational conversion factors were determined and obtained separately. Third, the method was validated using actual observation data, which showed that all values of the coefficient of determination were greater than 0.92. Finally, software was developed to display the counts of the PMT and the estimated exposure flux of the CCD in real-time during the observation, providing a visual reference for optimizing the exposure time control., Comment: Published in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Recently, DNN models for lossless image coding have surpassed their traditional counterparts in compression performance, reducing the bit rate by about ten percent for natural color images. But even with these advances, mathematically lossless image compression (MLLIC) ratios for natural images still fall short of the bandwidth and cost-effectiveness requirements of most practical imaging and vision systems at present and beyond. To break the bottleneck of MLLIC in compression performance, we question the necessity of MLLIC, as almost all digital sensors inherently introduce acquisition noises, making mathematically lossless compression counterproductive. Therefore, in contrast to MLLIC, we propose a new paradigm of joint denoising and compression called functionally lossless image compression (FLLIC), which performs lossless compression of optimally denoised images (the optimality may be task-specific). Although not literally lossless with respect to the noisy input, FLLIC aims to achieve the best possible reconstruction of the latent noise-free original image. Extensive experiments show that FLLIC achieves state-of-the-art performance in joint denoising and compression of noisy images and does so at a lower computational cost.

Hot Jupiters are among the best-studied exoplanets, but it is still poorly understood how their chemical composition and cloud properties vary with longitude. Theoretical models predict that clouds may condense on the nightside and that molecular abundances can be driven out of equilibrium by zonal winds. Here we report a phase-resolved emission spectrum of the hot Jupiter WASP-43b measured from 5-12 $\mu$m with JWST's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). The spectra reveal a large day-night temperature contrast (with average brightness temperatures of 1524$\pm$35 and 863$\pm$23 Kelvin, respectively) and evidence for water absorption at all orbital phases. Comparisons with three-dimensional atmospheric models show that both the phase curve shape and emission spectra strongly suggest the presence of nightside clouds which become optically thick to thermal emission at pressures greater than ~100 mbar. The dayside is consistent with a cloudless atmosphere above the mid-infrared photosphere. Contrary to expectations from equilibrium chemistry but consistent with disequilibrium kinetics models, methane is not detected on the nightside (2$\sigma$ upper limit of 1-6 parts per million, depending on model assumptions)., Comment: 61 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables. Atmospheric photochemistry on Titan continuously transforms methane and nitrogen gases into various organic compounds. This study explores the fate of these molecules when they land on Titan's surface. Our analytical exploration reveals that most simple organics found in Titan's atmosphere, including all nitriles, triple-bonded hydrocarbons, and benzene, land as solids. Only a few compounds are in the liquid phase, while only ethylene remains gaseous. For the simple organics that land as solids, we further examine their interactions with Titan's lake liquids. Utilizing principles of buoyancy, we found that flotation can be achieved via porosity-induced (25-60% porosity) or capillary force-induced buoyancy for HCN ices on ethane-rich lakes. Otherwise, these ices would sink and become lakebed sediments. By evaluating the timescale of flotation, our findings suggest that porosity-induced flotation of millimeter-sized and larger sediments is the only plausible mechanism for floating solids to explain the transient "magic islands" phenomena on Titan's lakes., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

The emergence of bulk carbon ferromagnetism is long-expected over years. At nanoscale, carbon ferromagnetism was detected by analyzing the magnetic edge states via scanning tunneling microscopy(STM), and its origin can be explained by local redistribution of electron wave function. In larger scale, carbon ferromagnetism can be created by deliberately producing defects in graphite, and detected by macroscopic technical magnetization. Meanwhile, it becomes crucial to determine that the detected magnetization is originated from carbon rather than from magnetic impurities. One solution is X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Nonetheless, a reproducible, full section of XMCD spectrum across C-1s absorption energy has not appeared yet, which should be decisive for assuring the indisputable existence of bulk carbon ferromagnetism. Besides, the lack of direct observation on the atomic structure of the ferromagnetic carbon leaves the structural origin of its ferromagnetism still in mist. In this work, for detecting bulk carbon ferromagnetism, we managed to grow all-carbon film consisting of vertically aligned graphene multi-edge (VGME), which wove into a three-dimensional hyperfine-porous network. Magnetization (M-H) curves and XMCD spectra co-confirmed bulk carbon ferromagnetism of VGME at room temperature, with the average unit magnetic momentum of ~0.0006 miuB/atom. The influence of magnetic impurities on magnetization was excluded by both absorption spectra and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurements. The spin transfer behavior also verified the long-range and robust feature of the bulk carbon ferromagnetism. Our work provides direct evidence of elementary resolved bulk carbon ferromagnetism at room temperature and clarifies its origin from pi-electrons at graphene edges.

The exchange bias (EB) effect, pivotal in magnetic data storage and sensing devices, has been observed not only in interfacial regions but also in intrinsic ferromagnetic materials. Here, we've uncovered a robust and stable exchange bias effect within the layered van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet VI3 employing magnetic circular dichroism microscopy. At 10 K, we observed a significant exchange field of approximately 0.1 T, accompanied by random shifts (positive or negative relative to zero magnetic field) after zero-field cooling. Notably, this effect is effectively controllable after field cooling, with shift direction opposing the applied magnetic field. The presence of strong magnetic anisotropic energy within VI3 results in larger coercivity-bound magnetic domains. These domains dictate the neighboring ferromagnetic alignment and induce shifts in the hysteresis loop. Our study not only contributes to comprehending fundamental nanoscale magnetic interactions but also sheds light on emergent phenomena within layered van der Waals magnets.

This paper focuses on propagation phenomena in reaction-diffusion equations with a weaklymonostable nonlinearity. The reaction term can be seen as an intermediate between the classicallogistic one (or Fisher-KPP) and the standard weak Allee effect one. We investigate the effect ofthe decay rate of the initial data on the propagation rate. When the right tail of the initial datais sub-exponential, finite speed propagation and acceleration may happen and we derive the exactseparation between the two situations. When the initial data is sub-exponentially unbounded, accel-eration unconditionally occurs. Estimates for the locations of the level sets are expressed in termsof the decay of the initial data. In addition, sharp exponents of acceleration for initial data withsub-exponential and algebraic tails are given. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate theabove findings.

Text watermarking algorithms are crucial for protecting the copyright of textual content. Historically, their capabilities and application scenarios were limited. However, recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have revolutionized these techniques. LLMs not only enhance text watermarking algorithms with their advanced abilities but also create a need for employing these algorithms to protect their own copyrights or prevent potential misuse. This paper conducts a comprehensive survey of the current state of text watermarking technology, covering four main aspects: (1) an overview and comparison of different text watermarking techniques; (2) evaluation methods for text watermarking algorithms, including their detectability, impact on text or LLM quality, robustness under target or untargeted attacks; (3) potential application scenarios for text watermarking technology; (4) current challenges and future directions for text watermarking. Two-dimensional (2D) material photodetectors have gained great attention as potential elements for optoelectronic applications. However, the linearity of the photoresponse is often compromised by the carrier interaction, even in 2D photodiodes. In this study, we present a new device concept of dual-floating van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) photodiode by employing ambipolar MoTe2 and n-type MoS2 2D semiconductors. The presence of type II heterojunctions on both sides of channel layers effectively deplete carriers and restrict the photocarrier trapping within the channel layers. As a result, the device exhibits robust linear photoresponse under photovoltaic mode from the visible (405 nm) to near-infrared (1600 nm) band. With the built-in electric field of the vdWHs, we achieve a linear dynamic range of ~ 100 dB, responsivity of ~ 1.57 A/W, detectivity of ~ 4.28 * 10^11 Jones, and response speed of ~ 30 {\mu}s. The unprecedented medium-resolution (R~1500-3500) near- and mid-infrared (1-18um) spectrum provided by JWST for the young (140+/-20Myr) low-mass (12-20MJup) L-T transition (L7) companion VHS1256b gives access to a catalogue of molecular absorptions. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis of this dataset utilizing a forward modelling approach, applying our Bayesian framework, ForMoSA. We explore five distinct atmospheric models to assess their performance in estimating key atmospheric parameters: Teff, log(g), [M/H], C/O, gamma, fsed, and R. Our findings reveal that each parameter's estimate is significantly influenced by factors such as the wavelength range considered and the model chosen for the fit. This is attributed to systematic errors in the models and their challenges in accurately replicating the complex atmospheric structure of VHS1256b, notably the complexity of its clouds and dust distribution. To propagate the impact of these systematic uncertainties on our atmospheric property estimates, we introduce innovative fitting methodologies based on independent fits performed on different spectral windows. We finally derived a Teff consistent with the spectral type of the target, considering its young age, which is confirmed by our estimate of log(g). Despite the exceptional data quality, attaining robust estimates for chemical abundances [M/H] and C/O, often employed as indicators of formation history, remains challenging. Nevertheless, the pioneering case of JWST's data for VHS1256b has paved the way for future acquisitions of substellar spectra that will be systematically analyzed to directly compare the properties of these objects and correct the systematics in the models., Comment: 32 pages, 16 figures, 6 tables, 2 appendices
