Abstract

A recent technique optimizing the detection of small birefringences typical of biological liquid crystals has been described elsewhere. Here, we derive a liner relationship between color intensity, molecular birefringence and degree of phase alignment, based on which, a quantitative image analysis is developed. The image analysis is used to define the dynamics of the phase transition-like increase in color intensity accompanying the condensation of the body-wall musculature in the maturing Drosophila larva, to map the orientation of the collagen fibers in the intervertebral disc, and to investigate mesophases of pork skin collagen assembled in vitro.

Abstract

Ultraweak biophoton emission has been recorded in synchronously developing populations of early Drosophila embryos. On being stimulated briefly with white light within the first 40 minutes of development, a new kind of luminescence is observed in the form of superdelayed, intense flashes. We assume that the initial light stimulation sets up some kind of coherent interaction inside the system and develop a phenomenological number-phase-angle model to give a general interpretation of the superdelayed radiation patterns.

Abstract

Classes are the basic modules in object-oriented (OO) software, which consist of attributes and methods. Thus, in OO environment, the cohesion is mainly about the tightness of the attributes and methods of classes. This paper discusses the relationships between attributes and attributes, attributes and methods, methods and methods of a class based on dependence analysis. Then the paper presents methods to compute these dependencies. Based on these, the paper proposes a method to measure the class cohesion, which satisfies the properties that a good measurement should have. The approach overcomes the limitations of previous class cohesion measures, which consider only one or two of the three relationships in a class. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
