Abstract

Background: The right-sided aortic arch (RAA) is an uncommon anatomical anomaly found in Case Description: A 52-year-old male, with a history of recurrent multiple TIAs, presented immediately after the onset of blurred vision and left-sided weakness. The initial diagnostic cerebral angiogram revealed a left CCA stenosis of Conclusion: We presented an extremely rare case of RAA with ALSA associated with a group of extra rare anomalies. Understanding the anatomical variants of RAA and its characteristics is critical to improving the management and follow-up of patients with such anomalies.

Abstract

Sarcoglycanopathies include four subtypes of autosomal recessive limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMDR3, LGMDR4, LGMDR5 and LGMDR6) that are caused, respectively, by mutations in the SGCA, SGCB, SGCG and SGCD genes. Delta-sarcoglycanopathy (LGMDR6) is the least frequent and is considered an ultra-rare disease. Our aim was to characterize the clinical and genetic spectrum of a large international cohort of LGMDR6 patients and to investigate whether or not genetic or protein expression data could predict a disease's severity. This is a retrospective study collecting demographic, genetic, clinical and histological data of patients with genetically confirmed LGMDR6 including protein expression data from muscle biopsies. We contacted 128 paediatric and adult neuromuscular units around the world that reviewed genetic data of patients with a clinical diagnosis of a neuromuscular disorder. We identified 30 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of LGMDR6 of which 23 patients were included in this study. Eighty-seven per cent of the patients had consanguineous parents. Ninety-one per cent of the patients were symptomatic at the time of the analysis. Proximal muscle weakness of the upper and lower limbs was the most common presenting symptom. Distal muscle weakness was observed early over the course of the disease in 56.5% of the patients. Cardiac involvement was reported in five patients (21.7%) and four patients (17.4%) required non-invasive ventilation. Sixty per cent of patients were wheelchair-bound since early teens (median age of 12.0 years). Patients with absent expression of the sarcoglycan complex on muscle biopsy had a significant earlier onset of symptoms and an earlier age of loss of ambulation compared to patients with residual protein expression. This study confirmed that delta-sarcoglycanopathy is an ultra-rare neuromuscular condition and described the clinical and molecular characteristics of the largest yet-reported collected cohort of patients. Our results showed that this is a very severe and quickly progressive disease characterized by generalized muscle weakness affecting predominantly proximal and distal muscles of the limbs. Similar to other forms of sarcoglycanopathies, the severity and rate of progressive weakness correlates inversely with the abundance of protein on muscle biopsy.

58. Compact, Energy Efficient Simultaneous Transmission of Analog and Different Digital Signals With a Single Ring Modulator

Abstract

We present a compact, agnostic transmitter capable of simultaneously transmitting all types of signals (analog and digital with different modulation formats) with a single-ring modulator with a radius of 10 micrometers and a bandwidth of around 18 GHz. To the best of our knowledge, we show for the first time, experimental results for transmitting three different Nyquist BPSK signals with an aggregated baud rate of 24 GBd in such a compact device. Additionally, we show the simultaneous transmission of a 3 GHz analog signal together with normal and Nyquist-shaped 4 GHz BPSK signals. All results were achieved without any power-consuming pre- or postprocessing to adapt the signals to the transfer function of the modulators. The simultaneous transmission of analog and digital signals in a device with a small footprint and low power consumption may be especially advantageous for future access networks.

Abstract

A numerical model to compute the free-surface flow hydrodynamics and stream temperature dynamics by solving the depth-averaged, 1D unsteady flow and heat transport equations is presented. The hydrodynamics model considers the effects of arbitrary stream geometry, variable slopes, variable flow regimes, and unsteady boundary conditions. The thermal transport model accounts for the effects of solar radiation, air temperature, relative humidity, cloud cover, wind speed, heat conduction between water and streambed, subsurface flow, and shading by riparian vegetation. The model is verified with measurements in a stream in an upland agricultural watershed located in Indiana. Diurnal variations in the streamflow and stream temperatures are highly transient. The proposed model predicted well the streamflow and stream temperatures that were measured every 15 min over 25 days. The results of this study demonstrate that the solar (shortwave) radiation and subsurface inflow are the most significant contributors to the stream heat budget.

Abstract

The brainstem locus coeruleus (LC), the primary norepinephrinergic (NE) nucleus in the brain, has been implicated in the abuse of drugs such as opioids. However, whether and how the LC-NE system is involved in cocaine addiction remains elusive. Here, we demonstrated cocaine-evoked synaptic plasticity of glutamatergic transmission onto LC neurons as one of the earliest traces occurring after a single injection of cocaine. Twenty-four hours after mice were injected intraperitoneally with cocaine, the evoked α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor (AMPAR) mediated synaptic transmission onto LC neurons were strongly potentiated without major effect on N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) mediated synaptic transmission. Compared with saline-pretreated mice, AMPAR-mediated excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) of cocaine-pretreated mice showed a marked inward rectification, demonstrating the insertion of GluR2-lacking AMPARs to plasma membrane. In addition, the single injection of cocaine did not affect presynaptic glutamate release probability measured by paired pulse ratio. Furthermore, we found that the cocaine-induced potentiation of AMPAR EPSCs could be blocked by prazosin, an inhibitor of α1-adrenoreceptor (AR), indicating that cocaine increases AMPAR transmission via α1-ARs. These results reveal that LC-NE serves as an initial target of drug intake.

Abstract

Introduction\ud Whole body computerised tomography has become a standard of care for the investigation of major trauma patients. However, its use varies widely, and current clinical guidelines are not universally accepted. We undertook a systematic review of the literature to determine whether clinical guidelines for whole body computerised tomography in trauma increase its diagnostic accuracy.\ud Materials and methods\ud A systematic review of Medline, Cinhal and the Cochrane database, supplemented by a manual search of relevant papers was undertaken, with narrative synthesis. Studies comparing clinical guidelines to physician gestalt for the use of whole body computerised tomography in adult trauma were included.\ud Results\ud A total of 887 papers were identified from the electronic databases, and 1 from manual searches. Of these, seven papers fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Two papers compared clinical guidelines with routine practice: one found increased diagnostic accuracy while the other did not. Two papers investigated the performance of established clinical guidelines and demonstrated moderate sensitivity and low specificity. Two papers compared different components of established triage tools in trauma. One paper devised a de novo clinical decision rule, and demonstrated good diagnostic accuracy with the tool. The outcome criteria used to define a ‘positive’ scan varied widely, making direct comparisons between studies impossible.\ud Conclusions\ud Current clinical guidelines for whole body computerised tomography in trauma may increase the sensitivity of the investigation, but the evidence to support this is limited. There is a need to standardise the definition of a ‘clinically significant’ finding on CT to allow better comparison of diagnostic studies.

Abstract

High-bandwidth signals are needed in many applications like radar, sensing, measurement and communications. Especially in optical networks, the sampling rate and analog bandwidth of digital-to-analog converters (DACs) is a bottleneck for further increasing data rates. To circumvent the sampling rate and bandwidth problem of electronic DACs, we demonstrate the generation of wide-band signals with low-bandwidth electronics. This generation is based on orthogonal sampling with sinc-pulse sequences in ${N}$ parallel branches. The method not only reduces the sampling rate and bandwidth, at the same time the effective number of bits (ENOB) is improved, dramatically reducing the requirements on the electronic signal processing. In proof of concept experiments the generation of analog signals, as well as Nyquist shaped and normal data will be shown. In simulations we investigate the performance of 60 GHz data generation by 20 and 12 GHz electronics. The method can easily be integrated together with already existing electronic DAC designs and would be of great interest for all high-bandwidth applications.

Abstract

We present a broadband coherent orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) transceiver based on orthogonal sampling and low bandwidth electronic analog signal processing. Wideband superchannels, without any guardband are aggregated from low bandwidth OFDM channels in the time domain by orthogonal Nyquist sinc-pulse sequences with a rectangular bandwidth. Therefore, the method is called OFDM-Nyquist-time division multiplexing (TDM). Simulation and experimental results will be discussed for optical systems. However, with some modifications the same principle can be used for wireless or THz signals. In simulations, we show a 40 GHz bandwidth, 160 Gbps, 16-QAM, 128 OFDM x 5-Nyquist-TDM transceiver based on 4 GHz electronics for the digital-to-analog (DAC), analog-to-digital (ADC) conversion and for the digital signal processing, including Fourier transform. For the experiment, we verify the processing of a 24 GHz bandwidth, 48 Gbps QPSK, 512 OFDM x 3-Nyquist-TDM signal with a 4 GHz transmitter and receiver. Since the proposed method drastically decreases the sampling rate and bandwidth requirements for the Fourier processing, the DAC and ADC, it can be a promising alternative for future communication systems with the highest possible symbol rate.

Abstract

This paper introduces a photonics-assisted receiver that enables the reception of high-bandwidth wireless signals with low-bandwidth electronics. The receiver down-converts the input signal into parallel low-bandwidth sub-signals, employing photonics-based orthogonal sampling. This sampling is based on a multiplication and not switching, so, it does not introduce additional aperture jitter. Therefore, the photonics-assisted analog-to-digital converter (ADC) converts the wireless signal with a higher signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio (SINAD), which improves the Q-factor for the detection. This Q-factor improvement is especially high, when the orthogonal sampling is carried out with low-jitter oscillators. Compared to the direct detection with 30 GHz, the simulation demonstrates a 2.2 dB Q-factor enhancement for the detection of a 30 GHz signal, with 10 GHz electronics. The same improvement is revealed in the experiment for the detection of 12 GHz signals with 4 GHz electronics.

يهدف البحث إلى تحديد الدور الوسيط للأبداع الاداري في العلاقة بين رأس المال البشري والتفكير الاستراتيجي في وزارة تنمية الموارد البشرية الإتحادية في السودان. وكان منهج البحث منهج الوصفي التحليلي واداة البحث الاستبيان ومجتمع البحث وزارة تنمية الموارد البشرية الإتحادية في السودان وعينة البحث تتألف من (96) من الكوادر الوظيفية في وزارة تنمية الموارد البشرية الاتحادية في السودان. تم وضع انموذج افتراضي يعكس طبيعة العلاقات والدور الوسيط للأبداع الاداري في العلاقة بين رأس المال البشري والتفكير الاستراتيجي ونتج عنه أربع فرضيات والتي اختبرت باستخدام عدد من الوسائل الاحصائية من البيانات المجمعة في استمارة الاستبانة الموزعة على العينة المبحوثة وتوصل البحث إلى مجموعة من الاستنتاجات أهمها هنالك علاقة ارتباط معنوي وموجب بين رأس المال البشري والتفكير الاستراتيجي وإن الابداع الاداري تتوسط الدور ما بين رأس المال البشري والتفكير الاستراتيجي وعلى ضوئها تم تحديد عدد من التوصيات.

Abstract

We present a joint experimental and theoretical investigation of the electronic excitations in transition metal-containing phenylene ethynylenes. The influence of the metal on the nature of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states is characterized. We find that π conjugation occurs through the metal sites, which deeply modifies the optical properties of the conjugated chains. We also analyze the chain-length dependence of the singlet–singlet, S0→S1, singlet–triplet, S0→T1, and triplet–triplet, T1→Tn, transition energies; both experimental data and theoretical results indicate that the lowest triplet exciton, T1, is strongly localized on a single phenylene ring while the S1 and Tn states extend over a few repeating units. Finally, we estimate the geometric relaxation phenomena occurring in the lowest excited states and perform a Huang–Rhys analysis of the triplet emission spectrum in model systems. © 1996 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

To cope with the exponential increase in internet services and corresponding data traffic, especially data centers and access networks require new high data rate transmission methods with low cost, very small package and low energy consumption. In this paper, we demonstrate a filterless, agnostic Nyquist wavelength division multiplexing (ANy-WDM) transmission system based on cascaded ring modulators and a comb source. The single ring modulator acts as a filter, filtering one of the $n$ WDM lines, generated by the comb. The same ring modulator modulates $k$ time division multiplexed (TDM) channels on the single wavelength. Since each WDM channel, consisting of $k$ time domain channels, has a rectangular bandwidth, the aggregated symbol rate of the superchannel modulated by this system corresponds to the optical bandwidth of all $n$ WDM channels together. The approach is very simple and compact. Since no optical filters, delay lines or other special photonics or high bandwidth electronics is needed, an integration into any photonics platform is straightforward. Thus, the proposed method might enable very compact, ultra-high data rate transmission devices for future data centers and access networks.

Abstract

Avicennia marina mangrove leaves polysaccharide (AMLP) was used for the synthesis of polysaccharide-based selenium (AMLP-SeNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AMLP-AgNPs). The synthesized nanoparticles were further characterized by UV-Vis, DLS, FT-IR, X-ray diffraction, and HR-TEM analysis. A 60-day (8 weeks) feeding trial experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of AMLP, AMLP-SeNPs, and AMLP-AgNPs dietary supplementation on growth performance parameters, blood parameters, immunological and enzymatic profiles in Cyprinus carpio. The characterization results of AMLP-SeNPs and AMLP-AgNPs confirmed the formation of well-stabilized spherical nanoparticles with a mean particle size of 37.25 and 72.40 nm, respectively having a crystalline structure. The feeding experiment results demonstrated that 2 mg/kg of AMLP-SeNPs followed by 0.2 mg/kg of AMLP-AgNPs showed significantly (p ˂ 0.05) higher final weight, weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR%), protein and lipid efficiency, and lower food conversion ratio as compared to other groups. The catalase, superoxidase dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase activity were significantly (p ˂ 0.05) higher in the group fed 2 mg/kg supplemented AMLP-SeNPs. Total protein and globulin contents were significantly (p ˂ 0.05) higher and albumin concentration was significantly lower in fish that received 2 mg/kg of AMLP- SeNPs as compared to control. A significant increase in serum HDL and decrease in LDL and MDA concentrations were observed in the group supplemented with 2 mg/kg of nano selenium. The body's crude lipid, protein, moisture, and ash were not significantly different from the control. The AMLP-SeNPs showed significantly (p ˂ 0.05) lower aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and higher alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities compared to other test groups. The relative percentage survivability (RPS%) was higher in AMLP-SeNPs (84.6%) followed by AMLP-AgNPs (76.7%) after 8th weeks of supplementary diets as compared to control groups. Overall, the finding of these studies revealed that the inclusion of AMLP-SeNPs improved the growth performance and antioxidant defense system, enhance immune response, and provide resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila in Common carp.
