In this article, we establish a limiting distribution for eigenvalues of a class of auto-covariance matrices. The same distribution has been found in the literature for a regularized version of these auto-covariance matrices. The original non-regularized auto-covariance matrices are non invertible which introduce supplementary diffculties for the study of their eigenvalues through Girko's Hermitization scheme. The key result in this paper is a new polynomial lower bound for the least singular value of the resolvent matrices associated to a rank-defective quadratic function of a random matrix with independent and identically distributed entries. We consider a data matrix $X:=C_N^{1/2}ZR_M^{1/2}$ from a multivariate stationary process with a separable covariance function, where $C_N$ is a $N\times N$ positive semi-definite matrix, $Z$ a $N\times M$ random matrix of uncorrelated standardized white noise, and $R_M$ a $M\times M$ Toeplitz matrix. Under the assumption of long range dependence (LRD), we re-examine the consistency of two toeplitzifized estimators $\hat R_M$ (unbiased) and $\hat R_M^b$ (biased) for $R_M$, which are known to be norm consistent with $R_M$ when the process is short range dependent (SRD). However in the LRD case, some simulations suggest that the norm consistency does not hold in general for both estimators. Instead, a weaker {\it ratio consistency} is established for the unbiased estimator $\hat R_M$, and a further weaker {\it ratio LSD consistency} is established for the biased estimator $\hat R_M^b$. The main result leads to a consistent whitening procedure on the original data matrix $X$, which is further applied to two real world questions, one is a signal detection problem, and the other is PCA on the space covariance $C_N$ to achieve a noise reduction and data compression.

Consider a $p$-dimensional population ${\mathbf x} \in\mathbb{R}^p$ with iid coordinates in the domain of attraction of a stable distribution with index $\alpha\in (0,2)$. Since the variance of ${\mathbf x}$ is infinite, the sample covariance matrix ${\mathbf S}_n=n^{-1}\sum_{i=1}^n {{\mathbf x}_i}{\mathbf x}'_i$ based on a sample ${\mathbf x}_1,\ldots,{\mathbf x}_n$ from the population is not well behaved and it is of interest to use instead the sample correlation matrix ${\mathbf R}_n= \{\operatorname{diag}({\mathbf S}_n)\}^{-1/2}\, {\mathbf S}_n \{\operatorname{diag}({\mathbf S}_n)\}^{-1/2}$. This paper finds the limiting distributions of the eigenvalues of ${\mathbf R}_n$ when both the dimension $p$ and the sample size $n$ grow to infinity such that $p/n\to \gamma \in (0,\infty)$. The family of limiting distributions $\{H_{\alpha,\gamma}\}$ is new and depends on the two parameters $\alpha$ and $\gamma$. The moments of $H_{\alpha,\gamma}$ are fully identified as sum of two contributions: the first from the classical Mar\v{c}enko-Pastur law and a second due to heavy tails. Moreover, the family $\{H_{\alpha,\gamma}\}$ has continuous extensions at the boundaries $\alpha=2$ and $\alpha=0$ leading to the Mar\v{c}enko-Pastur law and a modified Poisson distribution, respectively. Our proofs use the method of moments, the path-shortening algorithm developed in [18] and some novel graph counting combinatorics. As a consequence, the moments of $H_{\alpha,\gamma}$ are expressed in terms of combinatorial objects such as Stirling numbers of the second kind. In this article, we study high-dimensional behavior of empirical spectral distributions $\{L_N(t), t\in[0,T]\}$ for a class of $N\times N$ symmetric/Hermitian random matrices, whose entries are generated from the solution of stochastic differential equation driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H \in(1/2,1)$. For Wigner-type matrices, we obtain almost sure relative compactness of $\{L_N(t), t\in[0,T]\}_{N\in\mathbb N}$ in $C([0,T], \mathbf P(\mathbb R))$ following the approach in \cite{Anderson2010}; for Wishart-type matrices, we obtain tightness of $\{L_N(t), t\in[0,T]\}_{N\in\mathbb N}$ on $C([0,T], \mathbf P(\mathbb R))$ by tightness criterions provided in Appendix \ref{subset:tightness argument}. We consider eigenvalues of generalized Wishart processes as well as particle systems, of which the empirical measures converge to deterministic measures as the dimension goes to infinity. In this paper, we obtain central limit theorems to characterize the fluctuations of the empirical measures around the limit measures by using stochastic calculus. As applications, central limit theorems for the Dyson's Brownian motion and the eigenvalues of the Wishart process are recovered under slightly more general initial conditions, and a central limit theorem for the eigenvalues of a symmetric Ornstein-Uhlenbeck matrix process is obtained.

This paper studies the joint limiting behavior of extreme eigenvalues and trace of large sample covariance matrix in a generalized spiked population model, where the asymptotic regime is such that the dimension and sample size grow proportionally. The form of the joint limiting distribution is applied to conduct Johnson-Graybill-type tests, a family of approaches testing for signals in a statistical model. For this, higher order correction is further made, helping alleviate the impact of finite-sample bias. This paper investigates limiting properties of eigenvalues of multivariate sample spatial-sign covariance matrices when both the number of variables and the sample size grow to infinity. The underlying p-variate populations are general enough to include the popular independent components model and the family of elliptical distributions. A first result of the paper establishes that the distribution of the eigenvalues converges to a deterministic limit that belongs to the family of generalized Marcenko-Pastur distributions. Furthermore, a new central limit theorem is established for a class of linear spectral statistics. We develop two applications of these results to robust statistics for a high-dimensional shape matrix. First, two statistics are proposed for testing the sphericity. Next, a spectrum-corrected estimator using the sample spatial-sign covariance matrix is proposed. In this article, we obtain an equation for the high-dimensional limit measure of eigenvalues of generalized Wishart processes, and the results is extended to random particle systems that generalize SDEs of eigenvalues. We also introduce a new set of conditions on the coefficient matrices for the existence and uniqueness of a strong solution for the SDEs of eigenvalues. For dendrite graphs from biological experiments on mouse's retinal ganglion cells, a paper by Nakatsukasa, Saito and Woei reveals a mysterious phase transition phenomenon in the spectra of the corresponding graph Laplacian matrices. While the bulk of the spectrum can be well understood by structures resembling starlike trees, mysteries about the spikes, that is, isolated eigenvalues outside the bulk spectrum, remain unexplained. In this paper, we bring new insights on these mysteries by considering a class of uniform trees. Exact relationships between the number of such spikes and the number of T-junctions are analyzed in function of the number of vertices separating the T-junctions. Using these theoretic results, predictions are proposed for the number of spikes observed in real-life dendrite graphs. Testing for white noise is a classical yet important problem in statistics, especially for diagnostic checks in time series modeling and linear regression. For high-dimensional time series in the sense that the dimension $p$ is large in relation to the sample size $T$, the popular omnibus tests including the multivariate Hosking and Li-McLeod tests are extremely conservative, leading to substantial power loss. To develop more relevant tests for high-dimensional cases, we propose a portmanteau-type test statistic which is the sum of squared singular values of the first $q$ lagged sample autocovariance matrices. It, therefore, encapsulates all the serial correlations (upto the time lag $q$) within and across all component series. Using the tools from random matrix theory and assuming both $p$ and $T$ diverge to infinity, we derive the asymptotic normality of the test statistic under both the null and a specific VMA(1) alternative hypothesis. As the actual implementation of the test requires the knowledge of three characteristic constants of the population cross-sectional covariance matrix and the value of the fourth moment of the standardized innovations, non trivial estimations are proposed for these parameters and their integration leads to a practically usable test. Extensive simulation confirms the excellent finite-sample performance of the new test with accurate size and satisfactory power for a large range of finite $(p,T)$ combinations, therefore ensuring wide applicability in practice. Several well-established benchmark predictors exist for Value-at-Risk (VaR), a major instrument for financial risk management. Hybrid methods combining AR-GARCH filtering with skewed-$t$ residuals and the extreme value theory-based approach are particularly recommended. This study introduces yet another VaR predictor, G-VaR, which follows a novel methodology. Inspired by the recent mathematical theory of sublinear expectation, G-VaR is built upon the concept of model uncertainty, which in the present case signifies that the inherent volatility of financial returns cannot be characterized by a single distribution but rather by infinitely many statistical distributions. By considering the worst scenario among these potential distributions, the G-VaR predictor is precisely identified. Extensive experiments on both the NASDAQ Composite Index and S\&P500 Index demonstrate the excellent performance of the G-VaR predictor, which is superior to most existing benchmark VaR predictors., Comment: 42 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables

Let $\mathbf{X}_n=(x_{ij})$ be a $k \times n$ data matrix with complex-valued, independent and standardized entries satisfying a Lindeberg-type moment condition. We consider simultaneously $R$ sample covariance matrices $\mathbf{B}_{nr}=\frac1n \mathbf{Q}_r \mathbf{X}_n \mathbf{X}_n^*\mathbf{Q}_r^\top,~1\le r\le R$, where the $\mathbf{Q}_{r}$'s are nonrandom real matrices with common dimensions $p\times k~(k\geq p)$. Assuming that both the dimension $p$ and the sample size $n$ grow to infinity, the limiting distributions of the eigenvalues of the matrices $\{\mathbf{B}_{nr}\}$ are identified, and as the main result of the paper, we establish a joint central limit theorem for linear spectral statistics of the $R$ matrices $\{\mathbf{B}_{nr}\}$. Next, this new CLT is applied to the problem of testing a high dimensional white noise in time series modelling. In experiments the derived test has a controlled size and is significantly faster than the classical permutation test, though it does have lower power. This application highlights the necessity of such joint CLT in the presence of several dependent sample covariance matrices.
