63. Spontaneously Generated Electrons for CO2 Hydrogenation to Formate at the Microinterface of Air‐Water.

Abstract

The periphery of the microdroplets exhibits unusual physical properties that are not observed in bulk solutions. This work demonstrates in water microdroplets OH− can spontaneously donate electrons for CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid (FA), which may be driven by a strong electric field at or near the interfaces of water microdroplets. Surprisingly, Cu ions in microdroplets contribute to a 4000 times increase in output of FA. Control experiments show that in water microdroplets, electrons can be deposited by valence alternation of Cu to form Cu speciation, which can promote formate conversion. The authors show for the first time, without using any additives, under ambient conditions water microdroplets can capture CO2 and reduce CO2 to formate, which implies that water microdroplets may have provided a reactor for abiotic reduction reactions in the prebiotic era, thereby synthesizing organic molecules from atmospheric CO2 with a nonenzymatic production power before the advent of biotic reducing types of machinery. Abstract

The operational cost of a microgrid is significantly influenced by the response of storage systems and the complexities of the power market's tariff structures. This paper addresses the challenges arising from the coexistence of new market entries and traditional tariffs, which contribute to a complex market environment. To tackle this issue, the paper establishes a microgrid market environment encompassing four types of tariffs. By modeling the response of electric storage and cold storage in a microgrid, the study formulates a non-linear mixed-integer optimization problem. Numerical studies are then conducted to verify the model and analyze market performance. The results reveal a trade-off in behavior among different market entries when optimizing the total cost of microgrid operation. These findings shed light on the complexities and tradeoffs involved in microgrid operational cost optimization within a diverse market environment, offering valuable insights for market participants. 85. First-Principles Study of Hg0Immobilization on a Defective Pyrite Surface

Abstract

The formation of defects over a crystal surface could significantly improve the elemental mercury (Hg0) removal performance of pyrite (FeS2). Herein, the role of surface defects in Hg0immobilization over FeS2(100) was investigated by adopting quantum chemistry. The contribution of surface defects to mercury immobilization over pyrite was mainly manifested in facilitating Hg0adsorption. Compared with a perfect pyrite surface, a defective pyrite surface exhibited a higher affinity to Hg0, whose adsorption energy was up to −53.03 kJ/mol. In addition, surface defects could induce the dissociation of HCl, a common component in coal combustion flue gas, which provided active chlorine (Cl*) for subsequent Hg0oxidation. The Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism is responsible for Hg0oxidation over the defective FeS2(100) surface. First, Hg0and HCl were simultaneously adsorbed over the defective surface, and the presence of defects could promote Hg0adsorption and HCl dissociation. Subsequently, adsorbed Hg0would combine with the adjacent active Cl* site, whose energy barrier was 92.60 kJ/mol. Eventually, HgCl could spontaneously react with another Cl* site to form a HgCl2molecule. Thus, the formation of a HgCl intermediate was the rate-determining step for Hg0oxidation over a defective pyrite surface. This work reveals the role of defects in Hg0immobilization over a pyrite surface, which provides a scientific basis for the design and modification of natural mineral sulfide sorbents.

An efficient oxytrifluoromethylation of 1-aryl-substituted allyl alcohols has been developed using Togni's reagent II as a trifluoromethylation reagent and copper(I) chloride as a catalyst. This reaction proceeded through a one-pot process of trifluoromethylation followed by nucleophilic attack of the vicinal hydroxyl group.
