Abstract

This work simulated the flow pattern of the sludge blanket clarifier at the Bansin Water Treatment Plant, Taiwan by multiphase flow, three-dimensional analysis. The following three models were developed individually: One-phase flow (water) in the clarifier--this model acquires the basic water-flow pattern; a homogeneous porous medium at the bottom of the clarifier--this porous medium represents the sludge blanket; and, the Eulerian granular multiphase model, which was utilized to obtain solid effluent flux and to determine the effects of particle size and density on sludge blanket stability. Analytical results indicated that the clarifier has two principal circulations inside and outside the reaction well. A plentiful, dense and thick sludge blanket should exist at the clarifier bottom; otherwise particles could flow out through the gap between bottom of the reaction well and top of blanket surface, resulting in poor water quality. In the multiphase flow model, large particles and a high particle density are positively correlated with sludge blanket stability. 60. Assessment of canine adrenal function using a compounded synthetic adrenocorticotropic hormone

Abstract

Diseases of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are commonly encountered in dogs and include deficiency or excess of cortisol hormone, termed hypoadrenocorticism and hyperadrenocorticism respectively. Assessment of the HPA axis requires special endocrine assays including the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test, which uses exogenous ACTH to stimulate cortisol production. The most commonly used preparation of ACTH in Australia is Synacthen® (tetracosactrin, Mallinckrodt™ Pharmaceuticals, Staines-upon-Thames, Surrey, UK), which has been intermittently unacquirable. A compounded preparation of synthetic ACTH (tetracosactide, Bova Aus, Caringbah, NSW, Australia) has been available for several years in Australia and offers veterinarians an alternative ACTH for use in testing. It is unknown whether the compounded ACTH has an equivalent effect at increasing blood cortisol concentrations during ACTH stimulation testing compared to Synacthen. Determining its effect in healthy dogs would be the first step towards legitimate use of Bova ACTH in the diagnosis and treatment monitoring of HPA disease in dogs by Australian veterinarians. It is also unknown whether subject variables may affect the HPA axis and ultimately the blood cortisol concentration. - Objectives 1. To establish reference intervals (RI) for an on-site biochemical analyser, as a component of enrolling healthy dogs, prior to its use in the main study. 2. To establish the equivalence of the serum cortisol response to compounded Bova ACTH by comparing serum cortisol concentrations 1 hour after the administration of 5 µg/kg of compounded Bova ACTH versus Synacthen in healthy dogs. 3. COPD patients need to be individually treated according to their own characteristics. The purpose of this study was to explore the differences in different CT phenotypic COPD by molecular metabolites through the use of metabolomics. Methods: According to the characteristics of CT imaging, 42 COPD patients were grouped into phenotype E (n=20) or phenotype M (n=24). Each COPD patient received tiotropium bromide powder for inhalation for a therapeutic period of 3 months. All subjects were assigned into phenotype E in pre-therapy (EB, n=20), phenotype E in post-therapy (EA, n=20), phenotype M in pre-therapy (MB, n=22), phenotype M in post-therapy (MA, n=22), or normal control (N, n=24). The method of metabolomics based on 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) was used to compare the changes in serum metabolites between COPD patients and normal controls and between different phenotypes of COPD patients in pre- and post-therapy. Results: Patients with COPD phenotype E responded better to tiotropium bromide than patients with COPD phenotype M in terms of pulmonary function and COPD assessment test scores. There were differences in metabolites in COPD patients vs normal control people. Differences were also observed between different COPD phenotypic patients receiving the treatment in comparison with those who did not receive treatment. The changes of metabolites involved lactate, phenylalanine, fructose, glycine, asparagine, citric acid, pyruvic acid, proline, acetone, ornithine, lipid, pyridoxine, maltose, betaine, lipoprotein, and so on. These identified metabolites covered the metabolic pathways of amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, genetic materials, and vitamin. Conclusion: The efficacy of tiotropium bromide on COPD phenotype E is better than that of phenotype M. Metabolites detected by 1H-NMR metabolomics have potentialities of differentiation of COPD and healthy people, discrimination of different COPD phenotypes, and giving insight into the individualized treatment of COPD. 79. Effects of Hypoxic and Hypoxic Exercise on Nrf2 Expression and Oxidative Stress in the Skeletal Muscle of ApoE KO Mice Fed with a High-fat Diet.

Abstract

To investigate the effects of hypoxia and hypoxia training on oxidative stress in the skeletal muscle of ApoE knockout (KO) mice fed with a high-fat diet. Methods: 35 healthy 9-week-old ApoE KO mice were randomly divided into 3 groups: the normal oxygen control (C) group, hypoxic (H) group and hypoxic exercise (HE) group (n=10 in each group). 5 mice were used to measure the maximum running speed. Group C did not receive intervention; group H was placed in a hypoxic chamber (11.2%O2) for 40 minutes (3 times a week for 6 weeks) ; group HE was subjected to endurance exercise for 40 minutes with the same oxygen concentration, at a speed of 40% of the maximum running speed (3 times per week for 6 weeks). All the mice were fed with a high-fat diet containing 21% fat and 1.5% cholesterol during the 6-week exercise. After the last hypoxic exposure and exercise, all mice rested for 48 hours. Blood samples and skeletal muscle were collected to measure blood lipid levels and oxidative stress-related indicators. Results: (1) compared with group C, the plasma TC and LDL-C level of mice in groups H and HE had no significant changes, the plasma TG level in group HE was significantly lower than that in group H, and the HDL-C level was significantly higher than that in groups C and H (P<0.05). (2) Compared with group C, the ROS level and protein carbonylation content in the skeletal muscle of mice in groups H and HE significantly decreased, and the ROS level in group HE was lower than that in group H (P<0.01). (3) The expression of Nrf2, p-Nrf2 and antioxidant protein in groups H and HE showed an increasing trend, and the protein expression of NQO1 in group HE was significantly higher than that in group C (P<0.05). (4) Compared with group C, the mRNA expression of Gss, Gsr, Gclc, Gclm in group HE was higher than that in group C (P<0.01) ; the mRNA expression of Gss (P<0.05) and Gclc/Gclm (P<0.01) in group HE was higher than that in group H. The content of GSH in the skeletal muscle of mice in groups H and HE was significantly higher than that in group C (P<0.01), and the GSSG content in group HE was significantly lower than that in group C (P<0.05). Although the GSH/GSSG ratio showed an increasing trend in groups H and HE, there was no statistical difference. Conclusion: hypoxia combined with moderate-intensity exercise can improve lipid levels and oxidative stress in the skeletal muscle of ApoE KO mice fed with a high-fat diet; the Nrf2 signaling pathway may play an important role in the antioxidant regulation of the glutathione system. 80. Kangfuxinye Enema Combined with Mesalamine for Ulcerative Colitis: A Systematic Review and GRADE Approach

Objectives. To critically appraise the efficacy and safety of Kangfuxinye enema combined with mesalamine for the ulcerative colitis (UC) patients and in addition to grade the quality of evidence by using the GRADE (grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluation) approach. Methods. A literature search was performed in the Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CBM, CNKI, VIP, and WanFang Databases. The search restrictions were patients with UC and RCTs. Studies including other treatments except Kangfuxinye with mesalamine were excluded. Results. Nineteen studies met the inclusion criteria. We found significant benefits of Kangfuxinye combined with mesalamine against mesalamine alone in improving response rate as well as reducing the recurrence rate and inflammation rate; meanwhile, the increase of the adverse events rate was not observed. Furthermore, the symptoms remission rate and the cure time were insignificant statistically. Additionally, GRADE results indicated that the quality of evidence regarding the above 6 outcomes was rated from very low to moderate quality. Conclusions. Although Kangfuxinye enema seems effective and safe for treating UC patients in this systematic review, Kangfuxinye enema combined with mesalamine was weakly recommended due to very low to moderate quality of available evidence by the GRADE approach.

Abstract

Highly permselective nanostructured membranes are desirable for the energy-efficient molecular sieving on the subnanometer scale. The nanostructure construction and charge functionalization of the membranes are generally carried out step by step through the conventional layer-by-layer coating strategy, which inevitably brings about a demanding contradiction between the permselective performance and process efficiency. For the first time, we report the concurrent construction of the well-defined molecular sieving architectures and tunable surface charges of nanofiltration membranes through precisely controlled release of the nanocapsule decorated polyethyleneimine and carbon dioxide. This novel strategy not only substantially shortens the fabrication process but also leads to impressive performance (permeance up to 37.4 L m–2h–1bar–1together with a rejection 98.7% for Janus Green B-511 Da) that outperforms most state-of-art nanofiltration membranes. This study unlocks new avenues to engineer next-generation molecular sieving materials simply, precisely, and cost efficiently.

Abstract

The fast and reliable way to measure the similarity of tracked targets in sequence frames is the key point in visual tracking. Histogram is one of stable character of objects, which does not vary with change of target shape and scale. As the histogram does not contain the spatial information for the target, there comes out many pseudo-targets with similar histogram with the matched object. Besides the histogram describes color distribution in one region. It results in that the nearby regions have the similar color distribution, which make it difficult to locate target precisely. There always exists some distance away from the best position. On the other hand, the template matching is other useful way to measure the targets, but it is affected too much when target shape changing or overlapped. In this paper we propose a robust object tracking algorithm based on both histogram and template character. The histogram is used as object basic feature, and the flexible template is used for validating the reliability of candidate objects. And Mean shift algorithm is used in the histogram matching to speed up the algorithm to meet the real time requirement. Finally, the paper gives the experiment results, which show that the algorithm is practical and efficient.

Abstract

The principle of stereo printing is based on the binocular vision and the lenticular sheet is needed to separate left and right view images. Because 2D image loses depth information, 3D objects can not be reconstructed by a single image or only discontinuous, limited deepness layers can be got. A method to reconstruct 3D information and get realistic stereo vision images from a single 2D image is proposed in the paper incase of the surface function of the object is supposed known. This image processing method is useful for making stereo printing images.
