By systematic chemical substitution of Pt and Ni in the newly-discovered superconductor Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ ($T_c\sim$6 K), we study the evolution of its superconducting properties with doping, focussing on the behavior of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. In contrast to the previous results of Se doping on S sites, superconductivity is found to be rather robust against the Pt and Ni dopants on the one-dimensional Pd chains. Most strikingly, the reduced $H_{c2}$, i.e., the ratio of $H_{c2}/T_c$, is seen to be significantly enhanced by the heavier Pt doping but suppressed in the Ni-doped counterparts, distinct from the nearly constant value in the Se doped samples. Our findings therefore suggest that the upper critical field of this system can be modified in a tunable fashion by chemical doping on the Pd chains with elements of varying mass numbers. The spin-orbit coupling on the Pd sites, by inference, should play an important role in the observed superconductivity and on the large upper critical field beyond the Pauli pair-breaking field., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We study the isovalent substitution effect by partially introducing Se on S site in the newly discovered superconductor Nb$_2$PdS$_5$ ($T_c\sim$6 K) whose upper critical field is found to be far above its Pauli paramagnetic limit. In this Nb$_2$Pd(S$_{1-x}$Se$_x$)$_5$ (0$\leq$$x$$\leq$0.8) system, superconductivity is systematically suppressed by the Se concentration and ultimately disappears when $x\geq$ 0.5, after which a semiconducting-like ground state emerges. In spite of the considerably reduced $T_c$ with Se doping, the ratio of the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ to $T_c$, remains unaffected. Moreover, the size of the heat capacity jump at $T_c$ is smaller than that expected for a BCS superconductor, implying that a strong-coupling theory cannot be the origin of this large upper critical field. In addition, the low-lying quasiparticle excitations are consistent with a nodeless gap opening over the Fermi surface. These results combined impose severe constraints on any theory of exotic superconductivity in this system., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We report a detailed calorimetric study on single crystals of the 5$d$-transition metal pnictide SrPt2As2 with a superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ $\sim$5K. The peculiar field dependence of the electronic specific heat coefficient $\gamma$ can be decomposed into two linear components. Moreover, the temperature evolution of the electronic specific heat below $T_c$ is best described by a two-gap model. These findings suggest that two energy gaps are associated with the superconductivity. In parallel, we show that the spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1$, through nuclear magnetic resonance measurement, obeys the so-called Korringa relation well. This, along with the $T^2$ dependence of resistivity at low temperatures, points to a Fermi liquid ground state in this material., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The \gamma-ray loud blazars (flat spectrum radio quasars--FSRQs and BL Lacertae objects-BLs) are very bright in the \gamma-ray bands, which is perhaps associated with a beaming effect. Therefore, one can expect that the \gamma-ray luminosity is correlated with the beaming factor. In this paper, we investigated the relation between the radio Doppler factors and the gamma-ray luminosities. Our analysis suggests that the \gamma-ray luminosity be strongly correlated with the factor of \delta_R for the whole sample, FSRQs, and BLs. When the effect of a common redshift is excluded, the correlation still exists for the FSRQs sub-sample suggesting that the \gamma-rays are strongly beamed. However, the partial correlation analysis does not show a correlation for the small BL Lac sample., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, PASJ (accepted)

By performing density functional calculations, we investigate the origin of the skyrmion state and ferroelectricity in Cu2OSeO3. We find that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions between the two different kinds of Cu ions are extremely strong and induce the helical ground state and the skyrmion state in the absence and presence of magnetic field, respectively. On the basis of the general model for the spin-order induced polarization, we propose that the ferroelectric polarization of Cu2OSeO3 in the collinear ferrimagnetic state arises from an unusual mechanism, i.e., the single-spin-site contribution due to the spin-orbit coupling.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
The nature of the magnetism brought about by Fe adatoms on the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 was examined in terms of density functional calculations. The Fe adatoms exhibit strong easy-axis magnetic anisotropy in the dilute adsorption limit due to the topological surface states (TSS). The spin exchange J between the Fe adatoms follows a Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) behavior with substantial anisotropy, and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction between them is quite strong with |D/J|~0.3 under the mediation by the TSS, and can be further raised to ~0.6 by an external electric field. The apparent single-ion anisotropy of a Fe adatom is indispensable in determining the spin orientation.

Nonlinear Sciences - Chaotic Dynamics - Abstract
The phenomenon of sequential vibrational resonance existed in a multistable system that is excited by both high- and low-frequency signals is reported. By the method of direct separation of motions, the theoretical investigation on vibrational resonance is conducted in both cases of underdamped and overdamped, and the analytical predictions are in good agreement with the numerical simulations. In view of the theoretical results, the zero-order Bessel function related to the high-frequency signal is included in the renormalized resonant frequency, and which leads to the appearance of the sequential vibrational resonance. In the case of underdamped system with small damping coefficient, the resonance occurs in a series of discrete parameter regions. The sequential vibrational resonance is different from the traditional multiple vibrational resonance, because its appearance is much more regular. The results in this work may be helpful in the field of signal processing electronics, especially for dealing with the very-low-frequency signal., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

We have determined the resistive upper critical field Hc2 for single crystals of the superconductor Fe1.11Te0.6Se0.4 using pulsed magnetic fields of up to 60T. A rather high zero-temperature upper critical field of mu0Hc2(0) approx 47T is obtained, in spite of the relatively low superconducting transition temperature (Tc approx 14K). Moreover, Hc2 follows an unusual temperature dependence, becoming almost independent of the magnetic field orientation as the temperature T=0. We suggest that the isotropic superconductivity in Fe1.11Te0.6Se0.4 is a consequence of its three-dimensional Fermi-surface topology. An analogous result was obtained for (Ba,K)Fe2As2, indicating that all layered iron-based superconductors exhibit generic behavior that is significantly different from that of the high-Tc cuprates., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submit to PRL

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
We have investigated the effect of Fe nonstoichiometry on properties of the Fe1+y(Te, Se) superconductor system by means of resistivity, Hall coefficient, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. We find that the excess Fe at interstitial sites of the (Te, Se) layers not only suppresses superconductivity, but also results in a weakly localized electronic state. We argue that these effects originate from the magnetic coupling between the excess Fe and the adjacent Fe square planar sheets, which favors a short-range magnetic order., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures accepted for publication in PRB

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to compare the effect of topical laryngeal lidocaine with intravenous lidocaine before endotracheal intubation on the incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat, hoarseness, and cough. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective randomized controlled study enrolled 144 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy with endotracheal intubation. The patients were randomized to three groups and received 2% lidocaine by topical laryngeal spray (group T), intravenous 2% lidocaine (group I), and the equivalent volume of intravenous saline (group C) before intubation. The incidence and severity of sore throat, hoarseness, and cough reaction at 0.5, 1, 6, and 24 h after extubation were collected. RESULTS: The incidence of sore throat was significantly lower in group T than in groups I and C (6.4% vs. 37.2% and 86.7%, p < 0.001), respectively at 0.5 h after extubation, and it was significantly lower in group I than that in group C (37.2% vs. 86.7%, p < 0.001). Both the incidence of hoarseness and cough were significantly lower in group T than in group I and in group C (14.9% vs. 97.7% and 97.8%, p < 0.001, and 19.1% vs. 72.0% and 93.3%, p < 0.001), respectively. The severity of sore throat, hoarseness and cough in group T was significantly lower than that in group I and that in group C (p < 0.05), and it was significantly lower in group I than in group C (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Both topical laryngeal lidocaine and intravenous lidocaine before intubation have positive effects on preventing sore throat. Topical laryngeal route was superior to intravenous route. We have synthesized polycrystalline samples and single crystals of Fe(Te1-xSx)y, and characterized their properties. Our results show that the solid solution of S in this system is limited, < 30%. We observed superconductivity at ~ 9 K in both polycrystalline samples Fe(Te1-xSx)y with 0< x <= 0.3 and 0.86 <= y <= 1.0, and single crystals with the composition Fe(Te0.9S0.1)0.91, consistent with the recent report of Tc ~ 10 K superconductivity in the FeTe1-xSx polycrystalline samples with x = 0.1 and 0.2. Furthermore, our systematic studies show that the superconducting properties of this system sensitively depend on excess Fe at interstitial sites and that the excess Fe suppresses superconductivity. Another important observation from our studies is the coexistence of the superconducting phase and antiferromagnetism. Our analyses suggest that this phase coexistence may be associated with the random distribution of excess Fe and possibly occurs in the form of electronic inhomogeneity., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

Astrophysics - Abstract
We reported the result of long term optical variability of the blazar 4C 29.45 (QSO 1156+295, Ton 599), carried out optical photometric observations in Johnson V, Cousins RI passbands during April 1997 to March 2002 using the 1.56 meter telescope of the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) at Sheshan, China, compiled the post-1974 optical photometric data of the blazar by combining our new observations with the published optical data, and found maximum variations in different passbands: $\Delta$U = 4.41 mag, $\Delta$B = 5.55 mag, $\Delta$V = 4.53 mag, $\Delta$R = 5.80 mag, and $\Delta$I = 5.34 mag. The average color indices are: U$-$B = $-0.54\pm$0.18 mag, B$-$V = 0.56$\pm$0.21 mag, B$-$R = 0.93$\pm$0.18 mag, B$-$I = 1.51$\pm$0.24 mag, V$-$R = 0.44$\pm$0.15 mag and V$-$I = 1.03$\pm$0.23 mag. The post-1974 data give us an excellent opportunity to search for the existence of possible periodicity in the light curve. In search for periodicity in the R passband light curve, we performed Jurkevich test and power spectral (Fourier) analysis methods, and CLEANest algorithms to remove false signals. We found possible periods of 3.55 and 1.58 years. The possible mechanism for the periodic variability was discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables; PASJ in press

The performance a valve has been frequently estimated with numerical methods owing to limitations such as cost and place. In this study, for the triple-offset butterfly valves, the different sizes in various disc-opening cases was numerically conducted using different turbulence models of the two-equation turbulence models of k-ε, k-ω, and Reynolds stress model. The numerical calculations were validated against experimentally obtained valve flow test results. The numerical effect with the different turbulence models were analyzed with respect to the disc-opening cases. From the numerical analysis, the Reynolds stress model exhibits the most pronounced turbulence effects among the various turbulence models showing higher value of Reynolds normal stress near the valve disc region. The sensitivity of the turbulence model constants was examined using the 300 mm valve to observe the sensitivity of the turbulence model parameters in the two-equation turbulence models. Recent success in growing sub-10-nm rare-earth disilicide nanowires on Si(001) by Chen et al. has stimulated great interest in understanding the point defects in these silicides that may affect their properties. These disilicides exhibiting the AlB2 structure (C32, hP3) have the formula of RESi1.76, suggesting the existence of vacancies on the Si sublattice sites. In the present study, we obtain the vacancy concentrations by simultaneously measuring their lattice parameters and bulk densities. The results show 11.1% vacancies expressed in terms of one mole of RESi2. This means that in a unit cell of nine sites, one of the six sites occupied by the Si atoms is vacant.

ELECTRON cyclotron resonance heating ,CYCLOTRON resonance ,CARBONACEOUS aerosols ,ELECTRON density ,LANGMUIR probes ,ELECTRON temperature - Abstract
Recently, lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) was often used together with other heating methods, including electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) and ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH), to obtain plasma with high performance. Since parametric decay instability (PDI) is frequently observed in LHCD experiments and considered one of the important reasons for spectrum broadening or up-shifts of the parallel refractive index (N
∥︀ ), it is necessary to explore the influence of PDI on LHCD when other auxiliary heating is injected. Experiments were performed by applying a similar power of electron cyclotron (EC) or ion cyclotron (IC) wave to an LHCD plasma, respectively. Different lower hybrid wave spectral broadening measured by a new RF magnetic probe array was observed, suggesting different PDI behaviors during EC and IC application. When EC and lower hybrid wave (LHW) are simultaneously injected, the LH spectral broadening increases significantly. However, for the case of IC and LH, the spectral broadening is much reduced, meaning a weak PDI behavior. Further comparisons show that edge electron density, measured with a Langmuir probe, increases sharply (above 8 × 1018 m−3 ) during the LH plus EC application, whereas the increase of electron temperature in the edge region in the IC case is larger than that of EC case. Exploring highly efficient and stable photoelectrode material is essential for high-performance photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting applications. III-nitride semiconductors, particularly InGaN, have been considered as prospective materials for PEC hydrogen evolution. However, their surface states and other recombination centers, which enhance the charge recombination kinetics, are bottlenecks for the high PEC performance. In this work, we report the construction of type-II heterojunction by sputter depositing SnO
2 on InGaN nanorods (NRs) to promote interfacial carrier transport and thereby enhance PEC performance. The energy band offsets at the SnO2 /InGaN NRs interface were analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Type-II heterojunction was defined at the SnO2 /InGaN NRs interface with a valence band offset of 0.77 eV and conduction band offset of 0.25 eV. The photocurrent density of the SnO2 /InGaN NRs photoanode is 7.09 mA/cm2 at 0.77 V vs Ag/AgCl electrode with 80 nm SnO2 thickness, which is ∼14-fold higher than that of the pristine InGaN NRs photoanode. Furthermore, the applied bias photo-to-current efficiency of SnO2 /InGaN NRs photoanode records 3.36% at 0.77 V vs Ag/AgCl electrode. The enhanced PEC performance is mainly ascribed to the formation of high-quality SnO2 /InGaN NRs heterojunction that enforces the directional charge transfer and substantially boosts the separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs at the interface of InGaN NRs and SnO2 . Overall, this work sheds light on the promising strategy to design and fabricate III-nitride nanostructures-based photoelectrodes for feasible PEC water-splitting applications. - Abstract
Cosmic rays were first discovered over a century ago, however the origin of their high-energy component remains elusive. Uncovering astrophysical neutrino sources would provide smoking gun evidence for ultrahigh energy cosmic ray production. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory discovered a diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux in 2013 and observed the first compelling evidence for a high-energy neutrino source in 2017. Next-generation telescopes with improved sensitivity are required to resolve the diffuse flux. A detector near the equator will provide a unique viewpoint of the neutrino sky, complementing IceCube and other neutrino telescopes in the Northern Hemisphere. Here we present results from an expedition to the north-eastern region of the South China Sea. A favorable neutrino telescope site was found on an abyssal plain at a depth of $\sim$ 3.5 km. Below 3 km, the sea current speed was measured to be $v_{\mathrm{c}}<$ 10 cm/s, with absorption and scattering lengths for Cherenkov light of $\lambda_{\mathrm{abs} }\simeq$ 27 m and $\lambda_{\mathrm{sca} }\simeq$ 63 m, respectively. Accounting for these measurements, we present the preliminary design and capabilities of a next-generation neutrino telescope, The tRopIcal DEep-sea Neutrino Telescope (TRIDENT). With its advanced photon-detection technologies and size, TRIDENT expects to discover the IceCube steady source candidate NGC 1068 within 2 years of operation. This level of sensitivity will open a new arena for diagnosing the origin of cosmic rays and measuring astronomical neutrino oscillation over fixed baselines., Comment: 33 pages,16 figures.
