Search

When a superconductor is heated above its critical temperature $T_c$, macroscopic coherence vanishes, leaving behind droplets of thermally fluctuating Cooper pair. This superconducting fluctuation effect above $T_c$ has been investigated for many decades and its influence on the transport, thermoelectric and thermodynamic quantities in most superconductors is well understood by the standard Gaussian fluctuation theories. The transverse thermoelectric (Nernst) effect is particularly sensitive to the fluctuations, and the large Nernst signal found in the pseudogap regime of the underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates has raised much debate on its connection to the origin of superconductivity. Here we report on the observation of a colossal Nernst signal due to the superconducting fluctuations in the heavy-fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$. The Nernst coefficient is enhanced by as large as one million times over the theoretically expected value within the standard framework of superconducting fluctuations. This, for the first time in any known material, results in a sizeable thermomagnetic figure of merit approaching unity. Moreover, contrary to the conventional wisdom, the enhancement in the Nernst signal is more significant with the reduction of the impurity scattering rate. This anomalous Nernst effect intimately reflects the highly unusual superconducting state embedded in the so-called hidden-order phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$. The results invoke possible chiral or Berry-phase fluctuations originated from the topological aspect of this superconductor, which are associated with the effective magnetic field intrinsically induced by broken time-reversal symmetry of the superconducting order parameter., Comment: Original version. We presented optical and near-infrared multi-band linear polarimetry of the highly reddened Type Ia SN~2014J appeared in M82. SN~2014J exhibits large polarization at shorter wavelengths, e.g., $4.8$\% in $B$ band, and the polarization decreases rapidly at longer wavelengths, with the position angle of the polarization remaining at approximately $40^{\circ}$ over the observed wavelength range. These polarimetric properties suggest that the observed polarization is likely to be caused predominantly by the interstellar dust within M82. Further analysis shows that the polarization peaks at a wavelengths much shorter than those obtained for the Galactic dust. The wavelength dependence of the polarization can be better described by an inverse power law rather than by Serkowski law for Galactic interstellar polarization. These suggests that the nature of the dust in M82 may be different from that in our Galaxy, with polarizing dust grains having a mean radius of $<0.1\ \mu$m., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

To gain insight into the unconventional superconductivity of Fe-pnictides with no electron pockets, we measure the thermal conductivity $\kappa$ and penetration depth $\lambda$ in the heavily hole-doped regime of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The residual thermal conductivity $(\kappa/T)_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $T$-dependence of $\lambda$ consistently indicate the fully gapped superconductivity at $x=0.76$ and the (line) nodal superconductivity at higher hole concentrations. The magnitudes of $\frac{\kappa}{T}\cdot T_c|_{T \rightarrow 0\,{\rm K}}$ and $\frac{d\lambda}{d(T/T_c)}$ at low temperatures, both of which are determined by the properties of the low-energy excitations, exhibit a highly unusual non-monotonic x-dependence. These results indicate a dramatic change of the nodal characteristics in a narrow doping range, suggesting a doping crossover of the gap function between the s-wave states with and without sign reversal between $\Gamma$-centered hole pockets., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The grand unified theories are theoretically well motivated, but they typically have less direct indications on the low energy physics and it is not easy to test them. Here, we discuss a scenario of them which naturally solves the so-called doublet-triplet splitting problem and, at the same time, generally predicts characteristic collider phenomenology. We report that the optical polarization in the afterglow of GRB 091208B is measured at t = 149 - 706 s after the burst trigger, and the polarization degree is P = 10.4% +/- 2.5%. The optical light curve at this time shows a power-law decay with index -0.75 +/- 0.02, which is interpreted as the forward shock synchrotron emission, and thus this is the first detection of the early-time optical polarization in the forward shock (rather than that in the reverse shock reported by Steele et al. (2009). This detection disfavors the afterglow model in which the magnetic fields in the emission region are random on the plasma skin depth scales, such as amplified by the plasma instabilities, e.g., Weibel instability. The disk around the Herbig Ae star HD\,169142 was imaged and resolved at 18.8 and 24.5\,$\mu$m using Subaru/COMICS. We interpret the observations using a 2D radiative transfer model and find evidence for the presence of a large gap. The MIR images trace dust that emits at the onset of the strong rise in the spectral energy distribution (SED) at 20\,$\mu$m, therefore are very sensitive to the location and characteristics of the inner wall of the outer disk and its dust. We determine the location of the wall to be 23$^{+3}_{-5}$\,AU from the star. An extra component of hot dust must exist close to the star. We find that a hydrostatic optically thick inner disk does not produce enough flux in the NIR and an optically thin geometrically thick component is our solution to fit the SED. Considering the recent findings of gaps and holes in a number of Herbig Ae/Be group I disks, we suggest that such disk structures may be common in group I sources. Classification as group I should be considered a support for classification as a transitional disk, though improved imaging surveys are needed to support this speculation., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present the SPICA Coronagraphic Instrument (SCI), which has been designed for a concentrated study of extra-solar planets (exoplanets). SPICA mission provides us with a unique opportunity to make high contrast observations because of its large telescope aperture, the simple pupil shape, and the capability for making infrared observations from space. The primary objectives for the SCI are the direct coronagraphic detection and spectroscopy of Jovian exoplanets in infrared, while the monitoring of transiting planets is another important target. The specification and an overview of the design of the instrument are shown. In the SCI, coronagraphic and non-coronagraphic modes are applicable for both an imaging and a spectroscopy. The core wavelength range and the goal contrast of the coronagraphic mode are 3.5--27$\mu$m, and 10$^{-6}$, respectively. Two complemental designs of binary shaped pupil mask coronagraph are presented. The SCI has capability of simultaneous observations of one target using two channels, a short channel with an InSb detector and a long wavelength channel with a Si:As detector. The mobility of graphene transferred on a SiO2/Si substrate is limited to ~10,000 cm2/Vs. Without understanding the graphene/SiO2 interaction, it is difficult to improve the electrical transport properties. Although surface structures on SiO2 such as silanol and siloxane groups are recognized, the relation between the surface treatment of SiO2 and graphene characteristics has not yet been elucidated. This paper discusses the electrical transport properties of graphene on specific surface structures of SiO2 prepared by O2-plasma treatments and reoxidization.

The origin of the decoherence in superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, the so-called dark count, was investigated. We measured the direct-current characteristics and bias-current dependencies of the dark count rate in a wide range of temperatures from 0.5 K to 4 K, and analyzed the results by theoretical models of thermal fluctuations of vortices. Our results indicate that the current-assisted unbinding of vortex-antivortex pairs is the dominant origin of the dark count., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

The disk around AB Aur was imaged and resolved at 24.6\,$\mu$m using the Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer on the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. The gaussian full-width at half-maximum of the source size is estimated to be 90 $\pm$ 6 AU, indicating that the disk extends further out at 24.6\,$\mu$m than at shorter wavelengths. In order to interpret the extended 24.6\,$\mu$m image, we consider a disk with a reduced surface density within a boundary radius $R_c$, which is motivated by radio observations that suggest a reduced inner region within about 100 AU from the star. Introducing the surface density reduction factor $f_c$ for the inner disk, we determine that the best match with the observed radial intensity profile at 24.6\,$\mu$m is achieved with $R_c$=88 AU and $f_c$=0.01. We suggest that the extended emission at 24.6\,$\mu$m is due to the enhanced emission from a wall-like structure at the boundary radius (the inner edge of the outer disk), which is caused by a jump in the surface density at $R_c$. Such reduced inner disk and geometrically thick outer disk structure can also explain the more point-like nature at shorter wavelengths. We investigate the origin of short X-ray flares which are occasionally observed in early stages of afterglows of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We observed two events, GRB 071112C and GRB 080506, before the start of X-ray flares in the optical and near-infrared (NIR) bands with the 1.5-m Kanata telescope. In conjunction with published X-ray and optical data, we analyzed densely sampled light curves of the early afterglows and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in the NIR-X-ray ranges. We found that the SEDs had a break between the optical and X-ray bands in the normal decay phases of both GRBs regardless of the model for the correction of the interstellar extinction in host galaxies of GRBs. In the X-ray flares, X-ray flux increased by 3 and 15 times in the case of GRB 071112C and 080506, respectively, and the X-ray spectra became harder than those in the normal decay phases. No significant variation in the optical-NIR range was detected together with the X-ray flares. We made mid-infrared observations of the 10Msun Herbig Be star HD200775 with the Cooled Mid-Infrared Camera and Spectrometer (COMICS) on the 8.2m Subaru Telescope. We discovered diffuse emission of an elliptical shape extended in the north-south direction inabout 1000AU radius around unresolved excess emission. The diffuse emission is perpendicular to the cavity wall formed by the past outflow activity and is parallel to the projected major axis of the central close binary orbit. The centers of the ellipse contours of the diffuse emission are shifted from the stellar position and the amount of the shift increases as the contour brightness level decreases. The diffuse emission is well explained in all of geometry, size, and configuration by an inclined flared disk where only its surface emits the mid-infrared photons. Our results give the first well-resolved infrared disk images around a massive star and strongly support that HD200775 is formed through the disk accretion. The disk survives the main accretion phase and shows a structure similar to that around lower-mass stars with 'disk atmosphere'. At the same time, the disk also shows properties characteristic to massive stars such as photoevaporation traced by the 3.4mm free-free emission and unusual silicate emission with a peak at 9.2micron, which is shorter than that of many astronomical objects. We discuss the problem of universality of the soft, supersymmetry-breaking terms in the minimal supersymmetric SU(5) model (MSSU(5)) completed with flavor-dependent nonrenormalizable operators (NROs), or nrMSSU(5). These are exploited to correct the wrong fermion spectrum and to slow down the too-fast decay rate of the proton that the MSSU(5) model predicts. In general, the presence of such operators in the superpotential and K\"ahler potential gives rise to tree-level flavor- and CP-violating entries in the sfermion mass matrices at the cutoff scale, even when the mediation of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking is generation and field-type independent. We report on optical and infrared photometric observations of a WZ Sge-type dwarf nova, V455 And during a superoutburst in 2007. These observations were performed with the KANATA (V, J, and K_s bands) and MITSuME (g', Rc, and Ic bands) telescopes. Our 6-band simultaneous observations allowed us to investigate the temporal variation of the temperature and the size of the emitting region associated with the superoutburst and short-term modulations, such as early and ordinary superhumps. A hot (>11000 K) accretion disk suddenly disappeared when the superoutburst finished, while blackbody emission, probably from the disk, still remained dominant in the optical region with a moderately high temperature (~8000 K). This indicates that a substantial amount of gas was stored in the disk even after the outburst. This remnant matter may be a sign of an expected mass-reservoir which can trigger echo outbursts observed in several WZ Sge stars. The color variation associated with superhumps indicates that viscous heating in a superhump source stopped on the way to the superhump maximum, and a subsequent expansion of a low-temperature region made the maximum. The color variation of early superhumps was totally different from that of superhumps: the object was bluest at the early superhump minimum. The temperature of the early superhump light source was lower than that of an underlying component, indicating that the early superhump light source was a vertically expanded low-temperature region at the outermost part of the disk., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, PASJ accepted

We present early phase observations in optical and near-infrared wavelengths for the extremely luminous Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2009dc. The decline rate of the light curve is $\Delta m_{15}(B)=0.65\pm 0.03$, which is one of the slowest among SNe Ia. The peak $V$-band absolute magnitude is $M_{V}=-19.90\pm 0.15$ mag even if the host extinction is $A_{V}=0$ mag. It reaches $M_{V}=-20.19\pm 0.19$ mag for the host extinction of $A_{V}=0.29$ mag as inferred from the observed Na {\sc i} D line absorption in the host. Our $JHK_{s}$-band photometry shows that the SN is one of the most luminous SNe Ia also in near-infrared wavelengths. These results indicate that SN 2009dc belongs to the most luminous class of SNe Ia, like SN 2003fg and SN 2006gz. We estimate the ejected $^{56}$Ni mass of $1.2\pm 0.3$ $\Msun$ for no host extinction case (or 1.6$\pm$ 0.4 M$_{\odot}$ for the host extinction of $A_{V}=0.29$ mag). The C {\sc ii} $\lambda$6580 absorption line keeps visible until a week after maximum, which diminished in SN 2006gz before its maximum brightness. The line velocity of Si {\sc ii} $\lambda$6355 is about 8000 km s$^{-1}$ around the maximum, being considerably slower than that of SN 2006gz, while comparable to that of SN 2003fg. The velocity of the C {\sc ii} line is almost comparable to that of the Si {\sc ii}. The presence of the carbon line suggests that thick unburned C+O layers remain after the explosion. SN 2009dc is a plausible candidate of the super-Chandrasekhar mass SNe Ia.

Massive young stellar objects (MYSO) are surrounded by massive dusty envelopes. Our aim is to establish their density structure on scales of ~1000 AU, i.e. a factor 10 increase in angular resolution compared to similar studies performed in the (sub)mm. We have obtained diffraction-limited (0.6") 24.5 micron images of 14 well-known massive star formation regions with Subaru/COMICS. The images reveal the presence of discrete MYSO sources which are resolved on arcsecond scales. For many sources, radiative transfer models are capable of satisfactorily reproducing the observations. They are described by density powerlaw distributions (n(r) ~ r^(-p)) with p = 1.0 +/-0.25. Such distributions are shallower than those found on larger scales probed with single-dish (sub)mm studies. Other sources have density laws that are shallower/steeper than p = 1.0 and there is evidence that these MYSOs are viewed near edge-on or near face-on, respectively. The images also reveal a diffuse component tracing somewhat larger scale structures, particularly visible in the regions S140, AFGL 2136, IRAS 20126+4104, Mon R2, and Cep A. We thus find a flattening of the MYSO envelope density law going from ~10 000 AU down to scales of ~1000 AU. We have observed cosmic-ray electrons from 10 GeV to 800 GeV by a long duration balloon flight using Polar Patrol Balloon (PPB) in Antarctica. The observation was carried out for 13 days at an average altitude of 35 km in January 2004. The detector is an imaging calorimeter composed of scintillating-fiber belts and plastic scintillators inserted between lead plates with 9 radiation lengths. The performance of the detector has been confirmed by the CERN-SPS beam test and also investigated by Monte-Carlo simulations. New telemetry system using a commercial satellite of Iridium, power supply by solar batteries, and automatic level control using CPU have successfully been developed and operated during the flight. From the long duration balloon observations, we derived the energy spectrum of cosmic-ray electrons in the energy range from 100 GeV to 800 GeV. In addition, for the first time we derived the electron arrival directions above 100 GeV, which is consistent with the isotropic distribution., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Astropart. We present diffraction limited (0.6") 24.5micron Subaru/COMICS images of the red supergiant mu Cep. We report the detection of a circumstellar nebula, that was not detected at shorter wavelengths. It extends to a radius of at least 6" in the thermal infrared. On these angular scales, the nebula is roughly spherical, in contrast, it displays a pronounced asymmetric morphology closer in. We simultaneously model the azimuthally averaged intensity profile of the nebula and the observed spectral energy distribution using spherical dust radiative transfer models. The models indicate a constant mass-loss process over the past 1000 years, for mass-loss rates a few times 10^(-7) Msun/yr. This work supports the idea that at least part of the asymmetries in shells of evolved massive stars and supernovae may be due to the mass-loss process in the red supergiant phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Recently, it has been shown that large stacks of intrinsic Josephson junctions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 emit synchronous THz radiation, the synchronization presumably triggered by a cavity resonance. To investigate this effect we use Low Temperature Scanning Laser Microscopy to image electric field distributions. Apart from verifying the appearance of cavity modes at low bias we find that, in a high input power regime, standing-wave patterns are created through interactions with a hot spot, possibly pointing to a new mode of generating synchronized radiation in intrinsic Josephson junction stacks., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, supplementary information included

We report photometric observations of AL Com during its rare outburst in 2007. The light curve is reminiscent of its past superoutbursts in 1995 and 2001, except for the rebrightening phase after the main superoutburst. During the rebrightening phase in 2007, we found clear modulations between V=16.2-15.2. In conjunction with the lack of prominent superhumps in our time-series observations, the modulations can most naturally be interpreted as repetitive short rebrightenings with a cycle of 1-2 days. The rebrightening characteristics in 2007 are different from those in 1995 and 2001. This indicates that the type of rebrightenings in WZ Sge stars depends not on binary parameters of objects, but on the mass-accretion process for each outburst., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in IBVS

Several SU UMa-type dwarf novae, in particular, WZ Sge-type stars tend to exhibit rebrightenings after superoutbursts. The rebrightening phenomenon is problematic for the disk instability theory of dwarf novae since it requires a large amount of remnant matter in the disk even after superoutbursts. Here, we report our optical and infrared observations during the first-ever outburst of a new dwarf nova, SDSS J102146.44+234926.3. During the outburst, we detected superhumps with a period of 0.056281 +/- 0.000015 d, which is typical for superhump periods in WZ Sge stars. In conjunction with the appearance of a long-lived rebrightening, we conclude that the object is a new member of WZ Sge stars. Our observations, furthermore, revealed infrared behaviors for the first time in the rebrightening phase of WZ Sge stars. We discovered prominent infrared superhumps. We calculate the color temperature of the infrared superhump source to be 4600-6400 K. These temperatures are too low to be explained with a fully-ionized disk appearing during dwarf nova outbursts. We also found a Ks-band excess over the hot disk component. These unprecedented infrared activities provide evidence for the presence of mass reservoir at the outermost part of the accretion disk. We propose that a moderately high mass-accretion rate at this infrared active region leads to the long-lived rebrightening observed in SDSS J102146.44+234926.3., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures. We measured the Josephson vortex flow resistance as a function of magnetic field applied parallel to the ab-planes using annealed Y1Ba2Cu3Ox intrinsic Josephson junctions having high anisotropy (around 40) by oxygen content reduction. Periodic oscillations were observed in magnetic fields above 45-58 kOe, corresponding to dense-dilute boundary for Josephson vortex lattice. The observed period of oscillations, agrees well with the increase of one fluxon per two junctions ($H_{p}$\textit{=$\Phi $}$_{0}$\textit{/2Ls}), may correspond to formation of a triangular lattice of Josephson vortices as has been reported by Ooi et al. for highly anisotropic (larger than 200) Bi-2212 intrinsic Josephson junctions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The crossed Andreev reflection in a hybrid nanostructure consisting of a d-wave superconductor and two quantum wires is theoretically studied. When the (110) oriented surface of the superconductor is in contact with the wires parallel and placed close to each other, the Andreev bound state is formed by the crossed Andreev reflection. The conductance has two resonance peaks well below the gap structure in the case of tunnel contacts. These peaks originate from the bonding and antibonding Andreev bound states of hole wave functions., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We propose a novel Josephson device in which 0 and $\pi$ states are controlled by an electrical current. In this system, the $\pi$ state appears in a superconductor/normal metal/superconductor junction due to the non-local spin accumulation in the normal metal which is induced by spin injection from a ferromagnetic electrode. Our proposal offers not only new possibilities for application of superconducting spin-electronic devices but also the in-depth understanding of the spin-dependent phenomena in magnetic nanostructures., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We propose a new qubit consisting of a superconducting ring with two ordinary zero junctions and one ferromagnetic pi junction. In the system, two degenerate stable states appear in the phase space without an external magnetic field because of a competition between the zero and pi states. Quantum tunneling between the two degenerate states leads to a formation of bonding and antibonding states (coherent states) which are used as a bit. For manipulating the states of the qubit, only small external magnetic field around zero is required. This feature leads to a large-scale integration and a construction of the qubit with a smaller size which is robust to the decoherence by external noises., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

We report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks ($LQ$) in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 203 $pb^{-1}$ collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the CDF experiment. We observe no evidence for $LQ$ production in the topologies arising from $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eqeq$ and $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eq \nu q$, and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the $LQ$ production cross section. %as a function of $\beta$, where $\beta$ is the branching fraction for $LQ \to eq$. The results are combined with those obtained from a separately reported CDF search in the topology arising from $LQ\bar{LQ} \to \nu q \nu q$ and 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of $\beta = BR(LQ \to eq) $ are derived. We have experimentally investigated the fluxon dynamics in a narrow Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d stack with junction length L~1.8 um. As an evidence of high-frequency excitation by a collective cavity mode, under an (in-plane) external magnetic field, the current-voltage characteristics show prominent Fiske steps with the corresponding resonance frequencies of 75-305 GHz. Further study of flux-flow resistance oscillation with various c-axis currents clarifies the correlation with Fiske steps by distinguishing two different regions i.e., static flux-flow region at low bias current level and dynamic Fiske step region at high bias current level., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Solid-state qubits have the potential for the large-scale integration and for the flexibility of layout for quantum computing. However, their short decoherence time due to the coupling to the environment remains an important problem to be overcome. We propose a new superconducting qubit which incorporates a spin-electronic device: the qubit consists of a superconducting ring with a ferromagnetic pi junction which has a metallic contact and a normal Josephson junction with an insulating barrier. Thus, a quantum coherent two-level state is formed without an external magnetic field. This feature and the simple structure of the qubit make it possible to reduce its size leading to a long decoherence time., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

To take into account the temperature fluctuation in the Planck distribution, we calculate convolution integral with several probability distributions. Using these formula as well the Planck distribution and a formula in the non-extensive statistics, we analyze the data measured by the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE). Our analysis reveals that the derivation from the Planck distribution is estimated as |q-1| = 4.4\times 10^{-5}, where q means the magnitude of the non-extensivity or the temperature fluctuation, provided that the dimensionless chemical potential proposed by Zeldovich and Sunyaev exists. We theoretically study the crossed Andreev reflection in a hybrid nanostructure which comprises a d-wave superconductor and two normal-metal quantum wires. When the superconductor of the (110) oriented surface is in contact with the wires parallel and placed close to each other, the Andreev bound state is formed by the crossed Andreev reflection. When the contact barrier potential is sufficiently large, two sharp peaks appear in the conductance well below the gap structure, which originate from the bonding and antibonding Andreev bound states.
