Abstract

Herein, we report a feasibility study for elimination of the screening current-induced field (SCIF) in fully insulated (INS) and no-insulation (NI) GdBCO coated conductor (CC) coils exposed to an external AC magnetic field generated by background solenoid copper coils. Prior to investigating the effects of external AC magnetic fields on SCIF in the GdBCO CC coils, the magnetic flux density (B z ) was calculated using the equivalent circuit model and compared to the B z obtained empirically to quantify the SCIF in the INS and NI coils. The value of the SCIF in the NI coil was smaller than that in the INS coil without the use of an external AC magnetic field, due to the current paths originating from the turn-to-turn and layer-to-layer contacts, suggesting that the screening current dissipated by contact resistance during charging. When the INS and NI coils were exposed to the external AC magnetic field, the B z of the coils increased gradually, and eventually saturating to the calculated B z values, indicating full removal of the SCIF. In addition, the SCIF of the NI coil could be removed under subjection to a lower external AC magnetic field compared to the INS coil, due to the lower SCIF occurring in the NI coil after charging.

Abstract

A study investigated the effect of Cu addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe–2 wt-%Ni alloy fabricated by a metal injection moulding. Sintering treatments at 1100°C for 1 h were carried out on the present samples with various Cu contents of 0–3 wt-%. Microstructural observations revealed that, under the same sintering condition, both the size and volume fraction of the micropores increased as the amount of Cu content increased, which was attributed to the movement of Cu elements into the matrix boundaries during sintering. Some micropores appeared to be connected together when Cu content exceeded 2 wt-%. Despite a significant amount of the micropores present in the microstructure, values of microhardness increased due to the solid solution hardening associated with the Cu addition.

Abstract

The S matrix ansatz is a rigorously model independent approach to describe the cross-sections and asymmetries in e+e- annihilation. Using the cross-sections and asymmetries measured with the L3 detector during the 1990 and 1991 running period, we determine the mass and the width of the Z boson, the contributions of the Z exchange and of the yZ interference. Including the polarization of the t lepton in the analysis, the leptonic helicity amplitudes of the scattering process are determined assuming lepton universality. The results are compared with other model independent ansatzes as realized in ZFITTER. A systematic bias of the Z mass due to the yZ interference term is detected, which leads to an underestimation of the error on mz for model independent determinations., Facultad de Ciencias Exactas

Abstract

A search for rare charmless decays of B0d and B0s mesons has been performed in the exclusive channels B0d(s) →ηη0, B0d(s) →ηπ0 and B0d(s) →π0π0. The data sample consisted of three million hadronic Z decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP from 1991 through 1994. No candidate event has been observed and the following upper limits at 90% confidence level on the branching ratios have been set: Br(B0d→ηη) −4, Br(B0s →ηη) < 1.5 x 10−3, Br(B0d→ηπ0) < 2.5 x 10−4, Br(B0s→ηπ0) < 1.0 x 10−3, Br(B0d→π0π0) < 6.0 x 10−5, Br(B0s→π0π0) < 2.1 x 10−4. Abstract

This paper presents results, experimental and analytical, of the electrical characteristics of GdBCO single-pancake coils co-wound with a brass tape as metallic insulation (MI coil). The GdBCO pancakes were subjected to sudden discharge, charge-discharge, and over-current tests. The sudden discharge and charge-discharge test results of the MI coil demonstrated that MI coils can be charged and discharged significantly faster than non-insulated coils that are wound only with GdBCO tape. In over-current tests at 150 A (1.25I(c)), the MI coil exhibited better electrical behavior, i.e., self-protecting features, than its counterpart co-wound with Kapton tape, an insulator. Moreover, the experimental and analytical results are in agreement, validating the use of a concise equivalent parallel-RL circuit model for the MI coil to characterize its electrical behavior. Overall, the MI winding technique is highly promising to help build compact, mechanically robust, and self-protecting magnets composed of REBCO pancake coils. With no organic material in the winding, MI REBCO pancakes will be immune to neutron radiation damage, making the MI winding technique a viable option for fusion reactors, such as for toroidal field, poroidal field magnets, and central solenoid.

Abstract

We report here a simple and universally applicable protocol for extracting high quality proteins from plant leaf tissues. The protocol provides improved resolution and reproducibility of two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and reduces the time required to analyze samples. Partitioning rubisco by polyethylene glycol (PEG) fractionation provides clearer detection of low-abundance proteins. Co-extraction of interfering substances increases the sample conductivity, which results in poor electrophoretic separation. Re-extraction of PEG-fractionated samples with phenol effectively eliminated interfering substances, which results in optimal conductivity during separation in the first dimension of the isoelectric focusing. Smooth focusing reduces analysis time and provides superior resolution in 2-DE gels. Incubating the samples at -80° C instead of -20° C reduced protein precipitation time to 2-3 h. Removal of nonprotein contaminants and the use of sonication increased protein solubility without additional reagents. These changes enabled loading and separation of maximum amounts of proteins, which permitted improved protein identification by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). An immunological approach revealed that little or no ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphte bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase was present in the PEG supernatant. In addition, low-abundance proteins, such as myelocytomatosis transcription factor (MYC) and alpha subunit of heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide-binding protein complex (Gα), were detected only in the modified PEG supernatant and not in the total protein. These results suggest that our protocol produced high quality proteins and made many low-abundant proteins available for proteomic analysis. The successful application of this protocol for analyzing the leaf proteomes of soybean, Miscanthus sinensis, barley, Chinese cabbage, peanut and tea (Camellia sinensis) suggests that it could be used for comparative proteomic analysis of a wide range of plant leaves.

Abstract

An HTS racetrack-type coil without turn-to-turn insulation was characterized by critical current, sudden discharge, and over-current tests with respect to external pressures applied to the straight sections of the coil. The thermal stability of the non-insulated HTS racetrack-type coil was remarkably enhanced with increasing external pressure applied to the straight sections of racetrack-type coil. Furthermore, over-current test results confirmed that the non-insulated HTS racetrack-type coil with increased turn-to-turn thermal contact has the potential to be manufactured into field coils of HTS wind turbine generators with highly enhanced thermal and electrical stabilities.

Abstract

Cold tolerance at the seedling stage of rice is an important phenotypic trait that causes normal plant growth and stable rice production in temperate regions as well as tropical high-lands in Asia and Africa. In order to find quantitative trait loci (QTLs)/genes associated with cold tolerance, we constructed a linkage map using 153 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between a cold-tolerant temperate japonica cultivar, Geumobyeo, and a cold-sensitive tropical japonica breeding line, IR66160-121-4-4-2. The RILs were phenotyped for cold tolerance or sensitivity based on the degrees of cold tolerance as cold tolerance indices at the seedling stage. The seedlings for cold-tolerance/-sensitive traits were scored on the 7th day of the recovery period at 25°C after cold treatment at 10°C. Two QTLs (qCTS4a and qCTS4b) associated with cold tolerance at the seedling stage were identified on the long and short arms of chromosome 4 with an LOD score of 2.89 and 2.75, respectively, using composite interval mapping. The QTLs were flanked by simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers RM3648-RM2799 and RM3375a-RM558 that explained 8.3 and 7.8% of the total phenotypic variation, respectively. Seven of the selected RILs expressed cold tolerance at both the seedling and reproductive stages. The SSR markers associated with the QTLs will be useful for tracking favorable QTLs/genes into cold-sensitive elite cultivars and may have potential for pyramiding different QTLs for the improvement of cold tolerance in rice.

Abstract

After both the intravenous and oral administration of zinc acexamate [ZAC; ion-pairing between zinc and ϵ-acetamidocaproic acid (AACA)] and cimetidine together, the areas under the curve (AUCs) of AACA were significantly greater [by 28.2 and 98.9% after the intravenous and oral administration, respectively, for control rats and 13.5 and 16.9% for indomethacin-induced acute gastric ulcer (IAGU) rats, respectively] than those of ZAC alone due to the significantly slower renal clearance (CL(R)). The significantly greater AUCs of AACA after both the intravenous and oral administration of ZAC and cimetidine together in control and IAGU rats could have been due to the inhibition of active renal tubular secretion of AACA by cimetidine. After the intravenous and oral administration of both drugs together, the AUCs of cimetidine in control and IAGU rats were not different compared with those with cimetidine alone.

Abstract

This study presents the investigation of superconducting joints fabricated using multifilament magnesium diboride (MgB2) wires for the development of persistent-current mode magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) magnets. The critical current of the jointed samples decreased with increasing cutting angle because the smaller cutting angle allowed greater exposure of the MgB2 filament, thereby increasing the contact area for the wire-bulk-wire connection. Abstract

In this study, the friction stir welding process is optimised to improve the fatigue strength of the joints of A6005-T5 alloy sheets. The welding speed, rotational speed and tilting angle of the tool tip are chosen as design variables. Fifteen friction stir welding experiments are performed according to the central composite design table. The regression model function is estimated using the response surface analysis method. Using the model function, sensitivity analysis is carried out and the effect of each design variable on the fatigue strength of the joint is discussed. The optimum values of design variables are determined using the sequential quadratic programming algorithm.

Abstract

In high-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, the signal-to-noise ratio of MR signal is so high that the receiver frequently cannot cover the full dynamic range of the MR signal. Although this problem can be overcome by using a compander (compressor and expander) composed of logarithmic amplifiers and a ROM table to retrieve the nonlinearity of the logarithmic amplifiers or by simply increasing the number of bits of analog-to-digital converter, the methods can be costly and complex or even impossible for most commercial systems. In addition, the spectrometer has to be specifically designed to operate in those modes. In this article, we developed a simple dynamic range improvement method using a receiver with optimized variable gain control in which function can be implemented without any hardware modification to the spectrometer, if the spectrometer can do gain control during a scan. Simulations as well as experiments for the brain and resolution phantom have been performed, and the results demonstrate the utility of the proposed method. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

This study describes the design and evaluation of a compensating algorithm for the secondary voltage of a coupling capacitor voltage transformer (CCVT) in the time domain by considering the hysteresis characteristics of the core. The major error of the CCVT is the voltage across the capacitor and the tuning reactor caused by a non-sinusoidal exciting current. The proposed algorithm estimates the voltage across the capacitor and the reactor by considering the effect of the hysteresis characteristics of the core and adds it to the measured secondary voltage to obtain the correct voltage. The algorithm reduces the errors of the CCVT significantly both in the steady state and during a fault. The performance of the algorithm is verified under the various fault conditions by varying the fault distance, the fault inception angle and the fault impedance with the EMTP generated data. Test results clearly indicate that the algorithm can increase the accuracy of a CCVT significantly under the fault conditions as well as in the steady state. The algorithm helps to improve the performance of a protection relay or a metring device.

Abstract

This paper presents detailed facies and architectural analyses and palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the Sihwa Formation (Lower Cretaceous), mid-west Korea, which comprises an about 3-km-thick non-marine succession containing abundant dinosaur eggshells. Based on constituent facies, bedset geometry, stacking pattern, and bounding surface characteristics, the entire succession can be classified into three architectural elements. Element I occurs along the basin margin and shows a monotonous stacking of tabular or crudely stratified conglomeratic units. It represents alluvial-fan deposits of debris-flow-dominated fan and sheetflood-dominated fan. Element II is characterized by multi-storey, sheet or upward-widening, conglomeratic channel-fills whose maximum thickness exceeds 1.5 m. Each channel-fill unit is encased within red–brown silty sandstones of Element III with sharp erosional bases but diffuse gradational upper boundaries. It consists generally of (1) cut-and-fill deposit (trough cross-stratified or openwork conglomerate) in the lower part and (2) composite low-relief bar deposit (lenticular conglomerate and stratified gravelly sandstone) in the upper part. Shallowness of each cut-and-fill unit, absence of fining-upward lateral accretion package and the predominance of simple-bar deposit collectively suggest deposition from ephemeral braided streams. Element III typically shows a fining-upward stacking of (1) single- or multi-storey small-scale ( The entire sequence of the Sihwa Formation can be divided into the alluvial-fan and terminal-fan successions. The alluvial-fan succession displays a progradational stacking pattern and indicates a low rate of basin subsidence in the initial phase of rifting. The upper terminal-fan succession consists of proximal braided stream and distal floodplain deposits in the western and central parts of the basin and is characterized by an axial dispersal pattern and an aggradational stacking. It suggests rapid subsidence of the basin floor during the main phase of rifting. The asymmetrical cross-basin distribution of each architectural element reflects a half-graben structure of the basin with steep-gradient fault-bounded eastern margin (footwall block) and gently sloped, flexural western margin (hangingwall block). The predominance of ephemeral braided-stream deposits along with red–brown fine-grained floodplain deposits with common calcretes indicates arid to semi-arid palaeoclimates. Approximately 140 dinosaur eggs (Faveoloolithidae and Dendroolithidae) were identified mainly from the (gravelly) siltstones and small-scale channel fills of Element III deposits and partly from the cut-and-fill conglomerates of Element II deposits. The eggs commonly retain their original oval shape but are invariably breached and stuffed with the substrate of gravels and silt. They are either isolated or clustered, forming a circular concentration in plan view. The abundant yield of eggs, more than 20 eggs in 5 separate nests from a single depositional unit, suggests a dense population of the parental dinosaurs. The repetitive occurrence in many stratigraphic horizons reflects site preference as a nesting habitat of the near-channel or abandoned channel areas.

Abstract

Three trials were conducted to study the effect of processing method on performance, apparent nutrient and amino acid digestibilities in growing-finishing pigs fed lupine seeds. Ground, expanded or flaked lupine seed was prepared for the trials. In trial 1, a total of 72 growing barrows (LandracexLarge WhitexDuroc, initial BW of 54.22±5.87 kg) were allocated to three treatment diets containing 15% percent of differently processed lupine seed for 28 days. Each treatment had four replicates comprising 6 pigs each. In trial 2, a total of 48 finishing barrows (LandracexLarge WhitexDuroc, initial BW of 84.40±6.84 kg) were subjected to three treatments for 21 days. The experimental design was the same as trial 1 except for supplementation with 20% of lupine seed. Each treatment had four replicates comprising 4 pigs each. To evaluate the ileal digestibility of amino acids, a total of 9 barrows (LandracexLarge White xDuroc), with an average initial BW of 41.07±1.98 kg, were fed with ground, expanded or flaked lupine for 7 days. Each pig was surgically equipped with a simple T-cannula fitted in the distal ileum. Amino acid composition and presence of anti-nutritional factors (ANFs) in processed lupine sources were also evaluated. The results showed that there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in lupine amino acid composition due to the different processing methods. Expanded and flaked lupine significantly decreased (p 0.05) on the growth performance in growing pigs. To elucidate the efficacy of different soy protein sources on piglet's performance, a total of 280 weaned piglets (Duroc×Yorkshire×Landrace, 23±3 d of age, 5.86±0.45 kg initial BW) were allotted to 5 treatment diets comprising soybean meal (SBM), soy protein concentrate (SPC), Hamlet protein (HP300), fungal (Aspergillus oryzae) fermented soy protein (FSP-A), and fungal plus bacterial (A. oryzae+Bacillus subtilis) fermented soy protein (FSP-B), respectively. Experimental diets for feeding trial were formulated to contain each soy protein sources at 8% level to corn-whey powder basal diet. There were 14 pigs per pen and 4 pens per treatment. Experimental diets were fed from 0 to 14 d after weaning and then a common commercial diet was fed from 15 to 35 d. Also for ileal digestibility studies, 18 pigs were assigned to 6 dietary treatments as N-free, SBM, SPC, HP300, FSP-A and FSP-B with T- canulation at distal ileum for 6 days. At 14 th d of experimental feeding, the ADG was significantly higher (p 0.05). Villous height and crypt depth was not affected by dietary treatments. In conclusion, the growth and digestibility of nutrients in weaned pigs fed SPC was superior to others. Also FSP-A and FSP-B showed improved performance than those fed SBM. Abstract

The major geochemical characteristics of Red Sea brine are summarized for 11 brine-filled deeps located along the central graben axis between 19°N and 27°N. The major element composition of the different brine pools is mainly controlled by variable mixing situations of halite-saturated solution (evaporite dissolution) with Red Sea deep water. The brine chemistry is also influenced by hydrothermal water/rock interaction, whereas magmatic and sedimentary rock reactions can be distinguished by boron, lithium, and magnesium/calcium chemistry. Moreover, hydrocarbon chemistry (concentrations and δ 13 C data) of brine indicates variable injection of light hydrocarbons from organic source rocks and strong secondary (bacterial or thermogenic) degradation processes. A simple statistical cluster analysis approach was selected to look for similarities in brine chemistry and to classify the various brine pools, as the measured chemical brine compositions show remarkably strong concentration variations for some elements. The cluster analysis indicates two main classes of brine. Type I brine chemistry (Oceanographer and Kebrit Deeps) is controlled by evaporite dissolution and contributions from sediment alteration. The Type II brine (Suakin, Port Sudan, Erba, Albatross, Discovery, Atlantis II, Nereus, Shaban, and Conrad Deeps) is influenced by variable contributions from volcanic/ magmatic rock alteration. The chemical brine classification can be correlated with the sedimentary and tectonic setting of the related depressions. Type I brine-filled deeps are located slightly off-axis from the central Red Sea graben. A typical " collapse structure formation " which has been defined for the Kebrit Deep by evaluating seismic and geomorphological data probably corresponds to our Type I brine. Type II brine located in depressions in the northern Red Sea (i.e., Conrad and Shaban Deeps) could be correlated to " volcanic intrusion-/extrusion-related " deep formation. The chemical indications for hydrothermal influence on Conrad and Shaban Deep brine can be related to brines from the multi-deeps region in the central Red Sea, where volcanic/magmatic fluid/rock interaction is most obvious. The strongest hydrothermal influence is observed in Atlantis II brine (central multi-deeps region), which is also the hottest Red Sea brine body in 2011 (*68.2 °C).

Abstract

Healthy bone is maintained by the coordinated activities of osteoblast-mediated bone formation and osteoclast-dependent bone resorption. Pathologic conditions such as hormonal imbalance and inflammation cause increased osteoclastogenesis resulting in osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and periodontitis. Bortezomib is novel antimyeloma agent that has a direct beneficial effect on bone formation. However, the role of bortezomib in osteoclastogenesis and underlying mechanisms remains to be fully comprehended. In the present study, we show that bortezomib directly inhibited the receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL)– and lipopolysaccharide-dependent osteoclast differentiation. Interestingly, the bortezomib-mediated inhibition of osteoclastogenesis was transient, since the removal of bortezomib from culture completely restored osteoclast differentiation. Bortezomib impeded the induction and nuclear localization of nuclear factor of activated T cells, cytoplasmic 1 and reduced both macrophage colony-stimulating factor– and RANKL-induced extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation. In a mouse model of periodontitis, bortezomib prevented alveolar bone erosion induced by Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide. These data not only suggest a previously unappreciated mechanism by which bortezomib regulates bone resorption but also propose novel applications of bortezomib beyond its use as an antimyeloma agent.

Abstract

The lightest neutralino is a compelling candidate to account for cold dark matter in the universe in supersymmetric theories with $R$--parity. In the CP-invariant theory, the neutralino relic density can be found in accord with recent WMAP data if neutralino annihilation in the early universe occurs via the s-channel $A$ funnel. In contrast, in the CP-noninvariant theory two heavy neutral Higgs bosons can contribute to the Higgs funnel mechanism significantly due to a CP-violating {\it complex} mixing between two heavy states, in particular, when they are almost degenerate. With a simple analytic and numerical analysis, we demonstrate that the CP-violating Higgs mixing can modify the profile of the neutralino relic density {\it considerably} in the heavy Higgs funnel with the neutralino mass close to half of the heavy Higgs masses., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

Twenty Holstein cows were randomly assigned tofour diets (five cows/diet), ground corn with 30 % RUP (GCR30), ground corn with 40 % RUP (GCR40),flaked corn with 30 % RUP (FCR30), and flaked corn with 40 % RUP (FCR40). The processed corn withvarying RUP was fed in total mixed rations (TMR) to cows. Dry matter intake (DMI) was higher with 40% RUP diet than with 30 % RUP diet, resulting in higher protein and energy intake by cows during preand post partum (p 0.05). However, it was not affected by corn＜ processing during pre and post partum.Similarly milk yield was higher with 40 % RUP diet than with 30 % RUP diet. and milk yield wasaffected by corn processing at RUP 30 % level. Corn processing did not affected the milk fat and proteincontents in dairy cows. The concentration of blood non esterified fatty acid (NEFA) were effected by RUPlevel with flaked corn, however, it was non-significant with RUP levels when given with ground corn. Abstract

Although renal transplantation has been regarded as the best renal replacement therapy in end-stage renal disease patients, there have never been enough organ donors. Therefore, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-negative patients are often given priority over HBsAg-positive patients. We performed cadaveric renal transplantation in six HBsAg-positive recipients given HBsAg-positive donor organs who were on lamivudine treatment. Donors were found to have normal renal function by serum and urine laboratory tests. All recipients underwent liver biopsies before transplantation; those with liver cirrhosis were excluded. All recipients were treated with 100 mg lamivudine once daily because of positive titers of hepatitis B viral (HBV) DNA (three patients), and increased levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (three patients). During the follow-up period, one patient died from hepatic failure at 50 months after transplantation without deterioration of graft function. The remaining five patients showed sustained normal ALT levels. Decreases in HBV DNA titer were observed among patients who were positive before transplantation, but did not reverse to negative. Acute rejection developed in two patients: one was treated successfully with steroid pulse therapy, and the other had two bouts of acute rejection within a 33-month interval. The first was successfully treated with steroid pulse therapy, but the second failed. The four remaining patients have maintained normal renal function for a considerable time. HBsAg-positive donor organs must be used carefully in renal transplantation of HBsAg-positive recipients.

Abstract

Using nitrogen radio-frequency (RF) plasma operated in low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (LP-MOCVD), ZnSe:N epilayers were grown. Their optical and electrical properties were investigated with photoluminescence (PL) and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). PL spectra of ZnSe:N epilayers show that acceptor-bound exciton (I1) at 2.792 eV, donor-acceptor pair (DAP) at 2.65 ∼ 2.70 eV and its phonon replica in the lower energy side were dominant at low temperature. As increasing temperature, the intensity of the DAP line decreases rapidly compared to that of the exciton line. In addition, the free (electron)-to-acceptor (FA) emission appears on the high energy side of the DAP emission due to the partial ionization of shallow donors above 30 K. From the temperature dependence of the PL peak intensities, it can be seen that the activation energy of exciton line (22.3 meV) is in good agreement with the binding energy of the free exciton (21 meV). We investigate electrical properties of nitrogen-doped ZnSe films by measuring capacitance-voltage characteristic curve and DLTS. We have carried out DLTS to study deep hole traps in ZnSe:N epilayer and hole traps with the activation energy of 470 ∼ 790 meV were detected. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Abstract

Self-assembled ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) embedded in ZnS were grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition and investigated with atomic-force microscopy (AFM) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. Lens-shaped ZnSe QDs with the height of 1–2.4 nm and the radius of 25–37 nm are observed through the AFM measurements. The size and areal density of QDs increases as ZnSe deposition is increased. PL spectra of ZnSe QDs show consistent blueshifts due to quantum confinement effects. A simple model taking into account the lens shape of ZnSe QDs is introduced to calculate the quantum confinement effects in ZnSe QDs. Obtained excitonic ground state transition energies are in good agreement with the experimental PL peaks, which proposes that the model is adequate to describe the quantum confinement effect in lens-shaped ZnSe QDs. Abstract

We have studied properties of the superconducting MgB2 thin films made on sapphire substrates by radio frequency (rf) magnetron co-sputtering of Mg and B. The effects of annealing temperature and Mg:B ratio on the superconducting properties of the film were investigated. Films were prepared by room-temperature co-deposition of Mg and B using two guns and annealed in situ to form the superconducting MgB2 phase. Ar sputtering pressure was 20 mtorr with 5% of hydrogen gas to trap remnant oxygen gas in the deposition chamber. Average rf power density of Mg target was varied from 2 to 4 W cm?2 with that of B fixed at 12 W cm?2. An additional Mg layer was deposited on top to make up for Mg loss during in situ annealing. Films were heated up to 500?750 ?C at the rate of 60 ?C min?1, annealed for 20 min, and naturally cooled down by turning off the heater. The best results were obtained for films deposited with the rf power of Mg target at 50 W and annealed at 700 ?C. The mechanism for MgB2 formation in low-pressure annealing is believed to be that during annealing the local Mg vapour pressure inside the film falls within the thermodynamic window.

Abstract

The bottom-leaded plastic (BLP) package is a lead-on-chip type of chip scale package (CSP) developed mainly for memory devices. Because the BLP package is one of the smallest plastic packages available, solder joint reliability becomes a critical issue. In this study, a 28-pin BLP package is modeled to investigate the effects of molding compound and leadframe material properties, the thickness of printed circuit board (PCB), the shape of solder joint and the solder pad size on the board level solder joint reliability. A viscoplastic constitutive relation is adopted for the modeling of solder in order to account for its time and temperature dependence on thermal cycling. A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element analysis based on the above constitutive relation is conducted to model the response of a BLP assembly subjected to thermal cycling. The fatigue life of the solder joint is estimated by the modified Coffin-Manson equation. The two coefficients in the modified Coffin-Manson equation are also determined. Parametric studies are performed to investigate the dependence of solder joint fatigue life on various design factors.

Abstract

Laser therapy has gained wide acceptance applications to many medical disciplines. The side effect-effects from laser therapy involve the potential for interaction with cellular and extracellular matrix molecules to generate reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species which in turn can initiate lipid peroxidation, protein damage or DNA modification. These issues are addressed in this short overview in the context of experimental models of laser-induced thrombosis.

97. Association between pre-donation serum uric acid concentration and change in renal function after living kidney donation in women

Abstract

Reduction in renal mass after unilateral nephrectomy causes functional and structural changes in the remaining kidney.We aimed to investigate the association between pre-donation serum uric acid (SUA) concentration and the change in renal function after living kidney donation.This retrospective study included 413 living kidney donors from a single centre. We collected medical history and laboratory findings at baseline and 6 months after donation. Renal function was assessed by calculating the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation. Main outcomes were the percentage change in eGFR from before to 6 months after donation and the percentage of patients whose eGFR decreased by25% after donation compared with the pre-donation baseline value.Mean age was 40 ± 11 years, and eGFR was 106 ± 14 mL/min/1.73 m(2). In women, the SUA concentration was linearly associated with the change in eGFR after donation independently of baseline eGFR (standardised coefficient - 0.16, P = 0.04). Multiple logistic analysis showed that a 59.5 μmol/L increase in baseline SUA concentration was associated with a 1.7-fold higher risk of a25% decrease in eGFR after donor nephrectomy (95% confidence interval, 1.2-2.5; P = 0.007) in women. In contrast, SUA concentration was not an independent risk factor of decrease in eGFR after donor nephrectomy in men.Pre-donation SUA concentration is associated independently with the change in renal function after donor nephrectomy in women but not in men.

Abstract

The melting and freezing behaviour of nickel was investigated using a vertical alumina crucible specially constructed for thermocouple calibration. The melting and freezing emfs coincided to within 0.02 °C, and the freezing plateau depression was only 0.04 °C for 45 min. The effect of the thermocouple insulator was examined, and the heat loss through the insulator stem was estimated to lower the recorded temperature about 0.6 °C below the true freezing temperature. The expanded uncertainty for the calibration of a type B thermocouple was calculated to be about 2.1 °C (k = 2). The uncertainty factor related to the fixed-point temperature of nickel played a major role in the combined uncertainty. Exact determination of the true freezing temperature of nickel on the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90) will reduce this uncertainty. From the observed results on the melting and freezing behaviour of the nickel cell, it is suggested that the Ni freezing point can be used as a new primary-grade fixed point at high temperature.
