Objective: To report the outcomes of repeat biopsies, metastasis and survival in the Prostate Cancer Research International: Active Surveillance (PRIAS)-JAPAN study, a prospective observational study for Japanese patients, initiated in 2010., Patients and Methods: At the beginning, inclusion criteria were initially low-risk patients, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) density (PSAD) <0.2, and ≤2 positive biopsy cores. As from 2014, GS3+4 has also been allowed for patients aged 70 years and over. Since January 2021, the age limit for Gleason score (GS) 3 + 4 cases was removed, and eligibility criteria were expanded to PSA ≤20 ng/mL, PSAD <0.25 nd/mL/cc, unlimited number of positive GS 3 + 3 cores, and positive results for fewer than half of the total number of cores for GS 3 + 4 cases if magnetic resonance imaging fusion biopsy was performed at study enrolment or subsequent follow-up. For patients eligible for active surveillance, PSA tests were performed every 3 months, rectal examination every 6 months, and biopsies at 1, 4, 7 and 10 years, followed by every 5 years thereafter. Patients with confirmed pathological reclassification were recommended for secondary treatments., Results: As of February 2024, 1302 patients were enrolled in AS; 1274 (98%) met the eligibility criteria. The median (interquartile range) age, PSA level, PSAD, and number of positive cores were 69 (64-73) years, 5.3 (4.5-6.6) ng/mL, 0.15 (0.12-0.17) ng/mL, and 1 (1-2), respectively. The clinical stage was T1c in 1089 patients (86%) and T2 in 185 (15%). The rates of acceptance by patients for the first, second, third and fourth re-biopsies were 83%, 64%, 41% and 22%, respectively. The pathological reclassification rates for the first, second, third and fourth re-biopsies were 29%, 30%, 35% and 25%, respectively. The 1-, 5- and 10-year persistence rates were 77%, 45% and 23%, respectively. Six patients developed metastasis, and one patient died from prostate cancer., Conclusion: Pathological reclassification was observed in approximately 30% of the patients during biopsy; however, biopsy acceptance rates decreased over time. Background: Active surveillance for prostate cancer was initiated in the early 2000s. We assessed the long-term outcomes of active surveillance in Japan., Methods: This multicenter prospective observational cohort study enrolled men aged 50-80 years with stage cT1cN0M0 prostate cancer in 2002 and 2003. The eligibility criteria included serum prostate-specific antigen level ≤ 20 ng/mL, ≤ 2 positive cores per 6-12 biopsy samples, Gleason score ≤ 6, and cancer involvement < 50% in the positive core. Patients were encouraged to undergo active surveillance. Prostate-specific antigen levels were measured bimonthly for 6 months and every 3 months thereafter. Triggers for recommending treatment were prostate-specific antigen doubling time of < 2 years and pathological progression on repeat biopsy., Results: Among 134 patients, 118 underwent active surveillance. The median age, prostate-specific antigen level at diagnosis, and maximum cancer occupancy were 70 years, 6.5 ng/mL, and 11.2%, respectively. Ninety-one patients had only one positive cancer core. The median observation period was 10.7 years. At 1 year, 65.7% underwent a repeat biopsy, and 37% of patients experienced pathological progression. The active surveillance continuation rates at 5, 10, and 15 years were 28%, 9%, and 4%, respectively. One prostate cancer-related death occurred in a patient who refused treatment despite pathological progression at the one-year repeat biopsy., Conclusion: Active surveillance according to this study protocol was associated with conversion to the next treatment without delay, when indicated, despite the selection criteria and follow-up protocols being less rigorous than those recommended in current international guidelines., (© 2024. Unnatural polysaccharide analogs and their biological activities and material properties have attracted considerable research interest. However, these efforts often encounter challenges, especially those related to synthetic complexity and scalability. Here, we report the chemical synthesis of unnatural (1→6)-polysaccharides using levoglucosenone (LGO) and dihydrolevoglucosenone (Cyrene), which are derived from cellulose. Using a versatile monomer synthesis from LGO and Cyrene and cationic ring-opening polymerization, (1→6)-polysaccharides with various tailored substituent patterns are obtained. Additionally, environmentally benign and easy-to-handle organic Brønsted acid catalysts are investigated. This study demonstrates well-controlled first-order polymerization kinetics for the reactive (1 S ,5 R )-6,8-dioxabicyclo[3,2,1]octane (DBO) monomer. The synthesized (1→6)-polysaccharides exhibit high thermal stability and form amorphous solids under ambient conditions, which could be processed into highly transparent self-standing films. Additionally, these polymers exhibit excellent closed-loop chemical recyclability. This study provides an important approach to explore the chemical spaces of unnatural polysaccharides and contributes to the development of sustainable polymer materials from abundant biomass resources.

Seamlessly fusing fashion and functionality can redefine wearable technology and enhance the quality of life. We propose a pocketable and smart electrohydrodynamic pump (PSEP) with self-sensing capability for wearable thermal controls. Overcoming the constraints of traditional liquid-cooled wearables, PSEP with dimensions of 10 × 2 × 1.05 cm and a weight of 10 g is sufficiently compact to fit into a shirt pocket, providing stylish and unobtrusive thermal control. Silent operation coupled with the unique self-sensing ability to monitor the flow rate ensures system reliability without cumbersome additional components. The significant contribution of our study is the formulation and validation of a theoretical model for self-sensing in EHD pumps, thereby introducing an innovative functionality to EHD pump technology. PSEP can deliver temperature changes of up to 3 °C, considerably improving personal comfort. Additionally, the PSEP system features an intuitive, smartphone-compatible interface for seamless wireless control and monitoring, enhancing user interaction and convenience. Furthermore, the ability to detect and notify users of flow blockages, achieved by self-sensing, ensures an efficient and long-term operation. Through its blend of compact design, intelligent functionality, and stylish integration into daily wear, PSEP reshapes the landscape of wearable thermal control technology and offers a promising avenue for enhancing personal comfort in daily life.

Celastrol is a triterpene phytochemical known to possess anti‑inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer properties. The present study investigated the effects of celastrol on tumor necrosis factor‑related apoptosis‑inducing ligand receptor 2 (TRAIL‑R2)‑mediated apoptosis and cytotoxicity in human renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cells when administered in combination with lexatumumab, a human monoclonal agonistic antibody that specifically recognizes TRAIL‑R2. Cytotoxicity was determined by colorimetric assays of cell viability using cell counting kit‑8. The activation of caspases was assessed by quantitative colorimetric assays using caspase‑specific kits. Celastrol significantly enhanced lexatumumab‑induced apoptosis and cytotoxicity in RCC cells. An enhanced effect was also achieved when the duration of treatment with lexatumumab and celastrol was reduced from 24 to 6 h. The expression of TRAIL‑R2 was also remarkably increased by celastrol. Combined treatment with lexatumumab and celastrol significantly triggered activation of the caspase cascade, including caspase‑8, ‑9, ‑6, and ‑3, downstream molecules of death receptors. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity induced by that combination was significantly suppressed by the DR5:Fc chimeric protein, as well as specific inhibitors of caspase‑8, ‑9, ‑6 and ‑3. Taken together, these results indicated that celastrol enhances both TRAIL‑R2‑mediated apoptosis and cytotoxicity by upregulating TRAIL‑R2 and activating the caspase cascade, indicating the possibility of using it in combination with lexatumumab as an innovative therapeutic strategy for treating RCC.

Purpose: We developed a simple self-checkable screening tool for chronic prostatitis (S-CP) and internally validated it to encourage men (in the general population) with possible chronic prostatitis to consult urologists., Methods: The expert panel proposed the S-CP, which comprises three domains: Area of pain or discomfort (6 components), accompanying Symptom (6 components), and Trigger for symptom flares (4 components). We employed logistic regression to predict chronic prostatitis prevalence with the S-CP. We evaluated the predictive performance using data from a representative national survey of Japanese men aged 20 to 84. We calculated the optimism-adjusted area under the curve using bootstrapping. We assessed sensitivity/specificity, likelihood ratio, and predictive value for each cutoff of the S-CP., Results: Data were collected for 5,010 men-71 (1.4%) had a chronic prostatitis diagnosis. The apparent and adjusted area under the curve for the S-CP was 0.765 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.702, 0.829] and 0.761 (0.696, 0.819), respectively. When the cutoff was two of the three domains being positive, sensitivity and specificity were 62.0% (95% CI 49.7, 73.2) and 85.4% (95% CI 84.4, 86.4), respectively. The positive/negative likelihood ratios were 4.2 (95% CI 3.5, 5.2) and 0.45 (95% CI 0.33, 0.60), respectively. The positive/negative predictive values were 5.7 (95% CI 4.2, 7.6) and 99.4 (95% CI 99.1, 99.6), respectively., Conclusion: The reasonable predictive performance of the S-CP indicated that patients (in the general population) with chronic prostatitis were screened as a first step. Introduction: Central neuropathic pain (CNeP) is difficult to treat and has diverse etiology, including spinal cord injury (CNePSCI), Parkinson's disease (CNePPD), and central post-stroke pain (CPSP). The safety and efficacy of mirogabalin have been demonstrated in short-term trials, including patients with CNePSCI. The objective of our study was to confirm the safety/efficacy of mirogabalin in patients with CNePPD and CPSP, and obtain long-term data for CNePSCI., Methods: This 52-week, open-label extension of a previous randomized controlled study was conducted across Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. Patients with CNePSCI, CNePPD, or CPSP received twice daily (BID) 5-10 mg mirogabalin for a 4-week titration period, after which the dosage was maintained for 47 weeks at a maximum of 15 mg BID, followed by a 1-week taper period receiving the same dose but only administered once daily. The primary endpoint was safety, assessed primarily by incidence and severity of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs). Efficacy was assessed in a post hoc analysis of data obtained by the short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ)., Results: Of the 210 patients enrolled, 106, 94, and 10 had CNePSCI, CPSP, and CNePPD, respectively. The mean overall age of patients was 62.9 years, and most patients were male and of Japanese ethnicity. TEAEs occurred in 84.8% of patients, the most common being somnolence (16.7%), peripheral edema (12.4%), edema (11.4%), nasopharyngitis (11.0%), and dizziness (7.6%). Most TEAEs were mild. Severe and serious TEAEs occurred in 6.2% and 13.3% of patients, respectively. All patient groups experienced reductions in SF-MPQ visual analog scores for pain: mean ± standard deviation changes from baseline at week 52 were -2.3 ± 21.13 mm (CNePSCI), -17.0 ± 24.99 mm (CPSP), and -17.1 ± 35.32 mm (CNePPD)., Conclusion: Mirogabalin was generally safe, well tolerated, and effective for treatment of CNeP in this long-term study., Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier, NCT03901352., (© 2023. Purpose: To describe a case of a posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) of C2 transverse foramen level vertebral artery (VA) origin that entered the spinal canal via the C1/2 intervertebral space., Case Report: A 48-year-old man with posterior neck pain underwent computed tomography (CT) angiography and selective left vertebral angiography. Arterial dissection was found at the distal V2 segment of the left VA on subtracted CT angiography. The left PICA arising from the VA at the level of C2 transverse foramen was identified on CT angiography with bone imaging. This PICA of extracranial origin entered the spinal canal via the C1/2 intervertebral space, just like a PICA of C1/2 level origin., Discussion: The origins of PICAs show several variations. PICAs originating at the extracranial C1/2 level VA are relatively rare, with a reported prevalence of approximately 1%. Our patient had a left PICA arising from the VA at the level of the C2 transverse foramen. No similar cases have been reported in the relevant English-language literature. We speculated that the proximal short segment of the PICA arising from the C1/2 level VA regressed incidentally and that the distal segment of the PICA was supplied by the muscular branch of the VA arising from the level of the C2 transverse foramen., Conclusion: We reported the first case of PICA arising from the C2 transverse foramen level VA. Background and Objectives: Patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) commonly experience central neuropathic pain (CNeP), which is challenging to treat. Mirogabalin is effective for peripheral neuropathic pain, but evidence for CNeP is lacking., Methods: This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 study investigated mirogabalin efficacy and safety for the treatment of CNeP in patients with traumatic SCI. Adult patients from 120 sites throughout Japan, Korea, and Taiwan were randomized (1:1) to receive placebo or mirogabalin (5 mg twice daily [BID] for 1 week, 10 mg BID for 1 week, and 10 or 15 mg BID for 12 weeks). Patients with moderate renal impairment received half the dosage. The primary efficacy endpoint was change from baseline in the weekly average daily pain score (ADPS) at week 14. The secondary endpoints included ADPS responder rates, the Short-Form McGill Pain Questionnaire (SF-MPQ), average daily sleep interference score (ADSIS), and Neuropathic Pain Symptom Inventory (NPSI). Adverse events were monitored for safety., Results: Each treatment group comprised 150 patients. Mirogabalin elicited a statistical and clinically relevant improvement in change from baseline in the weekly ADPS at week 14 (least-squares mean difference [95% CI] vs placebo -0.71 [-1.08 to -0.34], p = 0.0001). Responder rates at week 14 were higher for mirogabalin than those for placebo (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.91 [1.11-3.27] for the ≥30% responder rate; 2.52 [1.11-5.71] for the ≥50% responder rate). Statistical improvements (i.e., least-squares mean difference [95% CI] vs placebo) were also observed in the SF-MPQ (-2.4 [-3.8 to -1.1]), ADSIS -0.71 (-1.04 to -0.38), and NPSI -7.7 (-11.1 to -4.4) scores. Background: Among early stage prostate cancer patients, intraductal carcinoma of the prostate (IDC-P) and invasive cribriform are key prognostic factors; however, their presence and clinical significance following active surveillance (AS) are unknown. In men who opted for AS, we aimed to examine the presence and impact of IDC-P or cribriform, utilizing radical prostatectomy (RP) specimens., Methods: We re-reviewed 137 RP specimens available in the PRIAS-JAPAN prospective cohort between January 2010 and September 2020. We assessed the presence of IDC-P or cribriform, and compared the patients' characteristics and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) recurrence-free survival after RP between groups with and without IDC-P or cribriform. In addition, we examined the predictive factors associated with IDC-P or cribriform., Results: The percentage of patients with IDC-P or cribriform presence was 34.3% (47 patients). IDC-P or cribriform pattern was more abundant in the higher Gleason grade group in RP specimens (P < 0.001). The rates of PSA recurrence-free survival were significantly lower in the IDC-P or cribriform groups than in those without them (log rank P = 0.0211). There was no association between IDC-P or cribriform on RP with the Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) 4,5 score on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before RP even with adjustments for other covariates (OR, 1.43; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.511-3.980, P = 0.497)., Conclusions: IDC-P or cribriform comprised approximately one-third of all RP specimens in men who underwent RP following AS, confirming their prognostic significance., (© 2022. Palpation is widely used as the initial medical diagnosis. Integration of micro tactile sensors and artificial muscles enables a soft microfinger for active touch sensing using its bending actuation. Active touch sensing by pushing-in motion of microfinger enables to evaluate stiffness distribution on an elastic object. Due to its compactness, the microfinger can enter a narrow space, such as gastrointestinal and abdominal spaces in a body. However, a microfinger can only touch and sense limited points. We aim at efficient method for searching a stiffness singular part in an elastic object by the directional touch sensing of a microfinger. This study presents a microfinger for active touch sensing using bending and push-in actuation and proposes an algorithm utilizing directivity in touch sensing by a microfinger for efficient localization of the stiffness singular part in an object. A gelatin block structure with a small rigid ball was prepared and touch sensed by the microfinger. Consequently, the position of the buried rigid ball could be efficiently identified based on the proposed algorithm. Objectives: To compare the medical costs of active surveillance with those of robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy, brachytherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and hormone therapy for low-risk prostate cancer., Methods: The costs of protocol biopsies performed in the first year of surveillance (between January 2010 and June 2020) and those of brachytherapy and radiation therapy performed between May 2019 and June 2020 at the Kagawa University Hospital were analyzed. Hormone therapy costs were assumed to be the costs of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogs for over 5 years. Active surveillance-eligible patients were defined based on the following: age <74 years, ≤T2, Gleason score ≤6, prostate-specific antigen level ≤10 ng/ml, and 1-2 positive cores. We estimated the total number of active surveillance-eligible patients in Japan based on the Japan Study Group of Prostate Cancer (J-CAP) study and the 2017 cancer statistical data. We then calculated the 5-year treatment costs of active surveillance-eligible patients using the J-CAP and PRIAS-JAPAN study data., Results: In 2017, number of active surveillance-eligible patients in Japan was estimated to be 2808. The 5-year total costs of surveillance, prostatectomy, brachytherapy, radiation therapy, and hormone therapy were 1.65, 14.0, 4.61, 4.04, and 5.87 million United States dollar (USD), respectively. If 50% and 100% of the patients in each treatment group had opted for active surveillance as the initial treatment, the total treatment cost would have been reduced by USD 6.89 million (JPY 889 million) and USD 13.8 million (JPY 1.78 billion), respectively., Conclusion: Expanding active surveillance to eligible patients with prostate cancer helps save medical costs., (© 2022 The Japanese Urological Association.)

Human-robot interaction technology has contributed to improving sociality for humanoid robots. At scales far from human scales, a microrobot can interact with an environment in a small world. Microsensors have been applied to measurement of forces by flying or walking insects. Meanwhile, most previous works focused on the measurement of the behavior of insects. Here, we propose microrobot-insect interactions by soft microfingers integrated with artificial muscle actuators and tactile sensors, which has been developed for a haptic teleoperation robot system. A soft pneumatic balloon actuator acts as the artificial muscle, and a flexible strain sensor using a liquid metal provides tactile sensing. Force interaction between a pill bug and the microfinger could be accomplished. The microfinger (12 mm × 3 mm × 490 μm) can move and touch an insect, and it can detect reaction force from an insect. The measured reaction force from the legs of a pill bug as a representative insect was less than 10 mN. This paper presents a microfinger as an end effector for the active sensing of reaction force from a small insect. Background: Patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures can provide valuable information in evaluating patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Post hoc analysis of the AFTERCAB study was conducted to evaluate the HRQoL benefit of enzalutamide plus androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) compared to flutamide plus ADT for the treatment of patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) in Japan., Methods: The open-label AFTERCAB study was conducted from November 2016 to March 2020 in Japanese men aged ≥ 20 years with asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic CRPC. Patients received enzalutamide plus ADT or flutamide plus ADT, respectively, as first-line alternative androgen therapy (AAT). HRQoL was analyzed through the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Prostate, EuroQoL 5-Dimension 5-Level instruments, Brief Pain Inventory-Short Form, and Brief Fatigue Inventory. The longitudinal changes in HRQoL, HRQoL deterioration based on minimally important difference (MID), and time to HRQoL deterioration were evaluated for first-line AAT., Results: Overall, HRQoL between the enzalutamide and flutamide groups was similar during first-line treatment. No statistically significant HRQoL difference in change from baseline to week 61 (least square mean difference; p value) was observed. Furthermore, proportions of pain progression, symptom worsening, and HRQoL deterioration based on MID, were not significantly different between groups., Conclusions: The results were similar in all subscales of each PRO, demonstrating similar HRQoL deterioration based on MID criteria between the enzalutamide and flutamide groups., (© 2022. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate whether oncological outcomes of radical prostatectomy differ depending on adherence to the criteria in patients who opt for active surveillance., Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 1035 patients enrolled in a prospective cohort of the PRIAS-JAPAN study. After applying the exclusion criteria, 136 of 162 patients were analyzed. Triggers for radical prostatectomy due to pathological reclassification on repeat biopsy were defined as on-criteria. Off-criteria triggers were defined as those other than on-criteria triggers. Unfavorable pathology on radical prostatectomy was defined as pathological ≥T3, ≥GS 4 + 3 and pathological N positivity. We compared the pathological findings on radical prostatectomy and prostate-specific antigen recurrence-free survival between the two groups. The off-criteria group included 35 patients (25.7%), half of whom received radical prostatectomy within 35 months., Results: There were significant differences in median prostate-specific antigen before radical prostatectomy between the on-criteria and off-criteria groups (6.1 vs. 8.3 ng/ml, P = 0.007). The percentage of unfavorable pathologies on radical prostatectomy was lower in the off-criteria group than that in the on-criteria group (40.6 vs. 31.4%); however, the differences were not statistically significant (P = 0.421). No significant difference in prostate-specific antigen recurrence-free survival was observed between the groups during the postoperative follow-up period (median: 36 months) (log-rank P = 0.828)., Conclusions: Half of the off-criteria patients underwent radical prostatectomy within 3 years of beginning active surveillance, and their pathological findings were not worse than those of the on-criteria patients., (© The Author(s) 2022. Background: The effect of enzalutamide in patients with non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer after combined androgen blockade, which represents a patient profile similar to real-world clinical practice in Japan, remains unknown. Therefore, we investigate the efficacy and safety of enzalutamide after combined androgen blockade for recurrence following radical treatment in Japanese patients with non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer., Methods: We analyzed 66 patients with non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer after combined androgen blockade for recurrence following radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy who were prospectively enrolled from October 2015 to March 2018. They received enzalutamide 160 mg orally once daily until the protocol treatment discontinuation criteria were met. The primary endpoint was prostate-specific antigen-progression-free survival, defined as the time from enrollment to prostate-specific antigen-based progression or death from any cause. The secondary endpoints included overall survival, progression-free survival, metastasis-free survival, time to prostate-specific antigen progression, prostate-specific antigen response rate, chemotherapy-free survival, and safety assessment., Results: The median observation period was 27.3 months. The median prostate-specific antigen-progression-free survival was 35.0 months (95% confidence interval, 17.5 to not reached). The median overall survival, median progression-free survival, median metastasis-free survival, and chemotherapy-free survival were not reached, with the corresponding 2-year rates being 91.6%, 67.1%, 72.4%, and 85.8%, respectively. The 50% prostate-specific antigen response rate was 88.9%, with the median time being 2.8 months. Purpose: To describe a case of duplicated posterior inferior cerebellar arteries (PICAs), one of which was supplied by the jugular branch of the ascending pharyngeal artery (APA)., Case Report: A 62-year-old man with cerebral infarction underwent cranial magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and MR angiography. MR angiography showed a hyperplastic left APA, that was found to enter the posterior cranial fossa and continue to the PICA. Another left PICA arising from the V4 segment of the left vertebral artery (VA) and a tiny left anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) were also identified. The source images of MR angiography revealed that the anomalous artery was passing through the medial side of the jugular foramen pars vascularis. The two left PICAs did not fuse to each other., Discussion: There are four types of the PICA arising from the carotid system: (1) the PICA arises from the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery (ICA) (persistent trigeminal artery variant); (2) the PICA arises from the cervical segment of the ICA (persistent hypoglossal artery variant); (3) the PICA arises from the APA via the hypoglossal canal; and (4) the PICA arises from the APA via the jugular foramen. Two PICAs sometimes arise from the V4 segment of the VA. In this common variation, the AICA is usually absent. This is the first reported case involving the association of (4) and a duplicated PICA with a tiny AICA., Conclusion: To identify this variation, careful observation of source images and creation of partial maximum-intensity-projection images of MR angiography are important., (© 2022. D-allose is a rare sugar that has been reported to up-regulate thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) expression and affect the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the antitumor effect of D-allose is unknown. This study aimed to determine whether orally administered D-allose could be a candidate drug against bladder cancer (BC). To this end, BC cell lines were treated with varying concentrations of D-allose (10, 25, and 50 mM). Cell viability and intracellular ROS levels were assessed using cell viability assay and flow cytometry. TXNIP expression was evaluated using Western blotting. The antitumor effect of orally administered D-allose was assessed using a xenograft mouse model. D-allose reduced cell viability and induced intracellular ROS production in BC cells. Moreover, D-allose stimulated TXNIP expression in a dose-dependent manner. Co-treatment of D-allose and the antioxidant L-glutathione canceled the D-allose-induced reduction in cell viability and intracellular ROS elevation. Furthermore, oral administration of D-allose inhibited tumor growth without adverse effects (p < 0.05). Histopathological findings in tumor tissues showed that D-allose decreased the nuclear fission rate from 4.1 to 1.1% (p = 0.004). Oral administration of D-allose suppressed BC growth in a preclinical mouse model, possibly through up-regulation of TXNIP expression followed by an increase in intracellular ROS. Therefore, D-allose is a potential therapeutic compound for the treatment of BC.
