An amino-functionalized metal–organic framework achieves efficient capture–diffusion–conversion of CO2.

This paper investigates the mechanical properties of graphite tailings concrete beams under various curing environments. The results show that the concentration of graphite tailings has an important influence on the mechanical properties of concrete. Finally, the bending characteristics of the beam and the modified bearing capacity calculation formula are obtained, which provides a theoretical basis and the reference value for the construction of green building materials. Through research, the main innovations and main findings of this paper are as follows: (1) In the three kinds of concrete experimental environment, the fracture load and ultimate load of concrete beams with graphite tailings replacement rate of 20% are the largest. (2) In the three kinds of concrete test environment, when the concrete test beams under the same load, with the increase of graphite tailings replacement rate, the mid-span deflection of concrete beams showed a trend of decreasing first and then increasing. When the replacement rate of graphite tailings sand is 20%, the mid-span deflection of the test beam is the smallest. (3) Through experiments, it is found that the normal section bearing capacity of graphite tailings concrete beams after chloride salt erosion conforms to the plane section assumption. After chlorine salt erosion, the strain of the longitudinal tensile steel bar of concrete beams with different graphite tailings sand replacement rates is the same as that of ordinary concrete beams, and the slope of the strain curve is the same, showing a linear trend. The experimental results show that the replacement rate of graphite tailings sand has an insignificant effect on the strain of steel bars. (4) The Gauss function is used to fit the experimental value of normal section bearing capacity of concrete beam, and the calculation formula of normal section ultimate bearing capacity of graphite tailings sand concrete beam under chloride environment is established. The research results of this paper have significant reference value for the study of mechanical properties of graphite tailings sand concrete components.

Bicomponent spunbond hydroentanglement technology can break the interface between the two components by physical extrusion and shearing, thereby realizing the green and efficient production of high-strength microfiber nonwoven materials. Herein, we report a soft and fluffy bicomponent spunbond hydroentanglement nonwoven material using high-shrinkage polyester/polyamide 6 (HSPET/PA6) as the bicomponent. HSPET/PA6 hollow segmented pie composite fibers with different volume ratios were prepared by spunbond technology, the HSPET and PA6 segments were alternately arranged, and the interface was flat. The composite fibers were split by heat treatment. The dry heat shrinkage rates of the composite fibers were 8.45% (50/50) and 10.57% (70/30), and the boiling water shrinkage rates were 10.02% (50/50) and 12.27% (70/30). HSPET/PA6 hollow segmented pie microfiber nonwovens were prepared by hydroentanglement technology. After heat treatment, the fibers of nonwovens were further split and the HSPET fibers curled, giving the nonwovens a fluffy characteristic. By comparing the properties of HSPET/PA6 after heat treatment, the shrinkage effect of the water bath was obviously better than that of dry heat, and the split degree of fibers reached 81.97% (50/50) and 84.65% (70/30). Compared with polyester/PA6 nonwovens, the softness of HSPET/PA6 nonwovens increased by 45.1% (50/50) and 49.3% (70/30) after boiling water shrinkage. At the same time, the mechanical properties of HSPET/PA6 nonwovens were also improved. The successful fabrication of HSPET/PA6 microfiber nonwovens provides a new method for enhancing the softness of bicomponent spunbond hydroentanglement nonwovens.

Cancer multidrug resistance (MDR) is an important reason that results in chemotherapy failure. As a main mechanism of MDR, overexpressed P-glycoprotein (P-gp) utilizes adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to actively pump chemotherapy drugs out of cells. In addition, metabolic reprogramming of drug-resistant tumor cells (DRTCs) exacerbates the specific hypoxic microenvironment and promotes tumor metastasis and recurrence. Therefore, we propose a novel sonodynamic therapy (SDT) paradigm to induce energy metabolism disorder and drug resistance change of DRTCs. A US-controlled "Nanoenabled Energy Metabolism Jammer" (TL@HPN) is designed using perfluoropentane (PFP) adsorbing oxygen in the core, and a targeting peptide (CGNKRTR) is attached to the liposome as the delivery carrier shell to incorporate hematoporphyrin monomethyl ether (HMME) and paclitaxel (PTX). The TL@HPN with ultrasonic/photoacoustic imaging (PAI/USI) precisely controlled the release of drugs and oxygen after being triggered by ultrasound (US), which attenuated the hypoxic microenvironment. SDT boosted the reactive oxygen species (ROS) content in tumor tissues, preferentially inducing mitochondrial apoptosis and maximizing immunogenic cell death (ICD). Persistently elevated oxidative stress levels inhibited ATP production and downregulated P-gp expression by disrupting the redox balance and electron transfer of the respiratory chain. We varied the effect of TL@HPN combined with PD-1/PD-L1 to activate autoimmunity and inhibit tumor metastasis, providing a practical strategy for expanding the use of SDT-mediated tumor energy metabolism.

Apoptosis plays essential roles in the immune defense mechanism against pathogen infection. Caspase 3 is a family of cysteine proteases involved in apoptosis and the immune response. In this study, the full-length of mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) caspase 3 (designated as Sp-caspase 3) was cloned and characterized. The open reading frame of Sp-caspase 3 was comprised a 1035 bp, which encoded a putative protein of 344 amino acids. Sp-caspase 3 was ubiquitously expressed in various tissues with a high-level expression in hemocytes. Cellular localization analysis revealed that Sp-caspase 3 was located in the cytoplasm and nucleus. Over-expression of Sp-caspase 3 could induce cell apoptosis. In addition, V. Parahaemolyticus infection induced the relative expression of caspase-3 mRNA and increased caspase-3 activity. Knocking down Sp-caspase 3 in vivo significantly reduced cell apoptosis and increased mortality of mud crab after V. parahaemolyticus infection. These results indicated that Sp-caspase 3 played important roles in the immune response and apoptosis against bacterial infection.

Developing high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density, rate capability and long cycle life are essential for the ever-growing practical application. Among all battery components, the binder plays a key role in determining the preparation of electrodes and the improvement of battery performance, in spite of a low usage amount. The main function of binder is to bond the active material, conductive additive and current collector together and provide electron and ion channels to improve the kinetics of electrochemical reaction. With the ever-increasing requirement of high energy density by LIBs, technical challenges such as volume expansion and active material dissolution are attracting worldwide attentions, where binder is thought to provide a new solution. There are two main categories (organic solvent soluble binder and water-soluble binder) and abundant polar functional groups providing adhesion ability. It is of great significance to timely summarize the latest progress in battery binders and present the principles for designing novel binders with both robust binding interaction and outstanding electrode stabilization function. This review begins with an introduction of the binding mechanism and the related binding forces, including mechanical interlocking forces and interfacial forces. Then, we discussed four different strategies (the enhancement of binding force, the formation of three-dimensional (3D) network, the enhancement of conductivity and binders with special functions) for constructing ideal binder system in order to satisfy the specific demands of different batteries, such as LIBs and lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Finally, some prospective and promising directions of binder design are proposed based on the existing and emerging binders and guide the development of the next-generation LIBs.

The emergence of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) has attracted substantial scientific attention. However, their antitumor efficacy in photodynamic therapy (PDT) is significantly restricted by the poor water solubility and limited treatment depth. Therefore, a novel AIEgens-involved therapeutic platform with good permeability and bioavailability is urgently required. Herein, supramolecular chemistry is combined with the AIEgen bis-pyrene (BP) to construct a peptide-AIEgen hybrid nanosystem (PAHN). After intravenous injection, the versatile nanoplatform not only improved the hydrophilicity of BP but also achieved stratified targeting from tumor to mitochondrial and induced mitochondrial dysfunction, thus activating caspase-3 upregulation. Then, sonodynamic therapy (SDT), an alternative modality with high tissue penetrability, is performed to evoke reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation for BP. More importantly, since the hydrophilic shell is separated from the nanosystem by the specific cleavage of caspase-3, the resulting decrease in hydrophilicity induced tight self-aggregation of PAHN residues in situ, further allowing more absorbed energy to be used for ROS generation under ultrasound irradiation and enhancing SDT efficacy. Moreover, severe oxidative stress resulting from ROS imbalance in the mitochondria initiates the immunogenic cell death process, thus evoking antitumor immunogenicity. This PAHN provides prospective ideas into AIE-involved antitumor therapy and design of peptide-AIEgens hybrids.

Ischemic stroke is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality. The β-1, 3-galactosyltransferase 2 (B3galt2), a member of β-1, 3-galactosyltransferase family, is playing a vital role in the pathological process of cerebral ischemic injury, but its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, we examined the involvement of oxidative stress and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in the neuroprotective effect of B3galt2. Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury was simulated in a mouse middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model. Recombinant human B3galt2 (rh-B3galt2) was administered intranasally 1 h post MCAO, and TGF-β1-siRNA was administered intracerebroventricularly 24 h before MCAO. Outcome measures included brain infarct volume, neurological function, blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability, neuronal apoptosis, oxidative stress, and the inflammatory response. First, we found that rh-B3galt2 significantly alleviated brain infarct volume and BBB permeability, improved neurological function, and attenuated I/R-induced neuron apoptosis and oxidative stress. Furthermore, rh-B3galt2 attenuated pro-inflammatory cytokines, NF-κB, IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β, and inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Finally, inhibition of TGF-β1 by TGF-β1-siRNA abolished the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of rh-B3galt2 in mice after I/R. Collectively, our study demonstrated that rh-B3galt2 exerts neuroprotective effects by regulating cerebral ischemia-induced oxidative stress and NLRP3 inflammasome, which is mainly dependent on the heightening of the TGF-β1 pathway. Thus, B3galt2 might be considered a new therapeutic target for ischemic stroke treatment.

Oxidative stress is considered as the toxicity mechanism of environmental stressors on aquatic organisms. This study aims to explore the effects of oxidative stress on physiological responses, DNA damage and transcriptional profiles of the mud crabs Scylla paramamosain. In the present study, mud crabs were injected with 0.1% and 1% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 72 h. The results showed that superoxide dismutase and catalase activities significantly decreased after H2O2 injection. Malondialdehyde content, H2O2 content, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase activity significantly increased after H2O2 injection. Moreover, DNA damage occurred after H2O2 injection. Transcriptome analysis showed that 531 and 372 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified after 0.1% and 1% H2O2 injection, respectively. These DEGs were mainly involved in the oxidative stress response and immune functions. All these results indicated that oxidative stress could impair both antioxidant defense systems and immune systems. Transcriptome analysis provided valuable information on gene functions associated with the response to oxidative stress in the mud crab.

Background Recent studies have demonstrated that multidrug resistance (MDR) is a critical factor in the low efficacy of cancer chemotherapy. The main mechanism of MDR arises from the overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), which actively enhances drug efflux and limits the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic agents. Results In this study, we fabricated a “combo” nanoagent equipping with triple synergistic strategies for enhancing antitumor efficacy against MDR cells. Tumor homing-penetrating peptide endows the nanosystem with targeting and penetrating capabilities in the first stage of tumor internalization. The abundant amine groups of polyethylenimine (PEI)-modified nanoparticles then trigger a proton sponge effect to promote endo/lysosomal escape, which enhances the intracellular accumulation and retention of anticancer drugs. Furthermore, copper tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (CuTCPP) encapsulated in the nanosystem, effectively scavenges endogenous glutathione (GSH) to reduce the detoxification mediated by GSH and sensitize the cancer cells to drugs, while simultaneously serving as a photoacoustic imaging (PAI) contrast agent for image visualization. Moreover, we also verify that these versatile nanoparticles in combination with PD-1/PD-L1 blockade therapy can not only activate immunological responses but also inhibit P-gp expression to obliterate primary and metastatic tumors. Conclusion This work shows a significant enhancement in therapeutic efficacy against MDR cells and syngeneic tumors by using multiple MDR reversing strategies compared to an equivalent dose of free paclitaxel. Using solid polymer electrolytes has been proven to be an efficient strategy to address the metal dendrites and pursuing high-voltage performance. Polyethylene oxide (PEO), as a popular polymer matrix, hardly works for zinc ion batteries due to its poor zinc ionic conductivity and the poor interfacial adhesion. Here, an ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([Emim]OTF), was applied as a plasticizer to tune the room-temperature ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of PEO membrane electrolyte. Additional nanofillers ZnO were utilized to enhance the plasticity and modulus. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNAs) are longer than 200 nucleotides and cannot encode proteins but can regulate the expression of genes through epigenetic, transcriptional, and post-transcriptional modifications. The pathophysiology of smooth muscle cells can lead to many vascular diseases, and studies have shown that lncRNAs can regulate the phenotypic conversion of smooth muscle cells so that smooth muscle cells proliferate, migrate, and undergo apoptosis, thereby affecting the development and prognosis of vascular diseases. This review discusses the molecular mechanisms of lncRNA as a signal, bait, stent, guide, and other functions to regulate the phenotypic conversion of vascular smooth muscle cells, and summarizes the role of lncRNAs in regulating vascular smooth muscle cells in atherosclerosis, hypertension, aortic dissection, vascular restenosis, and aneurysms, providing new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases.

IntroductionIn postmenopausal women, vitamin D deficiency (as defined by the circulating level of 25(OH)D being below 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/L)) is a regular occurrence. The effect of vitamin D supplementation on the muscle function of postmenopausal women has been controversial. This systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examines and summarizes the effects of vitamin D supplementation on the muscular strength and mobility of postmenopausal women.MethodsRCTs that met the inclusion criteria for this study were identified by searching PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library. Postmenopausal women who were included in the study were exposed to RCTs assessing the effectiveness of vitamin D supplements. Meta-analysis data were extracted by two independent reviewers and screened for methodological quality. RCTs that did not meet the minimum requirement for assessment were excluded. In the meta-analysis, the effect size (weighted mean differences, WMD) of handgrip strength (HGS) and timed-up and go test (TUG) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was obtained to compare reported results across the included RCTs.ResultsA total of 19 trials were included in this systematic review, among which 13 trials were eligible for the meta-analysis. In the 13 included studies, supplementing with vitamin D produced a weighted mean difference of 0.876 kg (95% CI = 0.180 to 1.571, P = 0.014, I2 = 68.5%) for HGS, a measurement of muscle strength. However, an insignificant decrease of 0.044 s was observed after analyzing the TUG (95% CI = -0.979 to 0.892, P = 0.927, I2 = 95%). According to subgroup analysis, vitamin D supplementation increased HGS in patients over the age of 60 (P = 0.001), in those without calcium supplementation (P = 0.032), and in those whose baseline vitamin D level was greater than 75 nmol/L (30 ng/ml) (P = 0.003).ConclusionsTaking into account the studies in this systematic review, vitamin D supplementation improved muscle strength in postmenopausal women. However, an insignificant result was demonstrated in terms of mobility after vitamin D supplementation.

A novel effective halogen-free flame retardant (FR) rich in phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) was synthesized via Mannich and esterification reaction of ethanolamine, glyoxal, phosphoric acid and urea, and used for the preparation of durable flame retardant lyocell fabric (FR-lyocell). Its chemical structure was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, 1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. Inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry and elemental analysis were conducted to test the phosphorous, carbon and nitrogen contents. The results confirmed that the FR was successfully synthesized and grafted on the lyocell fabric via firm P–O–C covalent bonds. The limiting oxygen index of the FR-lyocell treated with 30 wt% flame retardant finishing solution is 44.6%, demonstrating high efficiency flame retardancy. The thermo-gravimetric analysis indicated that FR-lyocell degraded preferentially than that of the control sample and the char residue was 38.8 wt% at 800 °C in N2 atmosphere. In addition, the cone calorimeter test revealed that FR-lyocell could not be ignited and the peak of heat release rate was much lower than that of original specimen. Furthermore, the char residue of FR-lyocell is compact and the ID/IG value is 0.771, exhibiting a super degree of carbonization. Moreover, TG-IR result revealed that FR played dual flame-retardant effect in the gaseous and condensed phases. The flame retardant finishing has a negligible impact on the mechanical properties of the fibers. In summary, FR-lyocell exhibits excellent flame retardancy and superior char forming capability, which is suitable for the preparation of flame retardant lyocell fibers.

Flexible lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density and stable electrochemical performance are regarded as the most promising power source for supplying wearable electronics. Simultaneously achieving a small bending angle, multiple deformation modes, superior mechanical durability and high energy density remains a challenge. Here, inspired by a human joint, a novel and rational structural design for flexible LIBs is reported. In the battery, thick and rigid stacks for storing the main energy are equipped with cumbered surfaces and interconnected thin parts, imitating the articular surface-ligament structure of a human joint providing flexibility for the whole battery. The configuration of thick stacks can be changed by different winding technologies, which endows the battery with abundant deformabilities, including bending, twisting, stretching and even winding. A finite element simulation confirmed that our designed battery will not lead to the irreversible plastic deformation of metal current collectors under various harsh and complex deformations. The flexible battery with cubic energy storage units exhibits a high energy density of 371.9 W h L−1, which is 92.9% of a conventional pouch cell. Furthermore, it can maintain stable cycling performances, even undergoing over 200 000 times dynamic bending and 25 000 times dynamic twisting deformations. The battery with cylindrical energy storage units can withstand more harsh and complex deformations. After undergoing over 100 000 times dynamic stretching, 20 000 times twisting and 100 000 times bending deformations, a high-capacity retention of over 88% can be attained. Accordingly, the novel and unique flexible LIBs provide great promise for its practical applications in wearable electronics.
