59. Electric-Field Control of Spin Diffusion Length and Electric-Assisted D’yakonov–Perel’ Mechanism in Ultrathin Heavy Metal and Ferromagnetic Insulator Heterostructure

Abstract

Electric-field control of spin dynamics is significant for spintronic device applications. Thus far, effectively electric-field control of magnetic order, magnetic damping factor and spin-orbit torque (SOT) has been studied in magnetic materials, but the electric field control of spin relaxation still remains unexplored. Here, we use ionic liquid gating to control spin-related property in the ultra-thin (4 nm) heavy metal (HM) platinum (Pt) and ferromagnetic insulator (FMI) yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12, YIG) heterostructure. It is found that the anomalous Hall effect (AHE), spin relaxation time and spin diffusion length can be effectively controlled by the electric field. The anomalous Hall resistance is almost twice as large as at 0 voltage after applying a small voltage of 5.5 V. The spin relaxation time can vary by more than 50 percent with the electric field, from 41.6 to 64.5 fs. In addition, spin relaxation time at different gate voltage follows the reciprocal law of the electron momentum scattering time, which indicates that the D'yakonov-Perel' mechanism is dominant in the Pt/YIG system. Furthermore, the spin diffusion length can be effectively controlled by an ionic gate, which can be well explained by voltage-modulated interfacial spin scattering. These results help us to improve the interface spin transport properties in magnetic materials, with great contributions to the exploration of new physical mechanisms and spintronics device.

Abstract

In transport, the topological Hall effect (THE) presents itself as non-monotonic features (or humps and dips) in the Hall signal and is widely interpreted as a sign of chiral spin textures, like magnetic skyrmions. However, when anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is also present, the co-existence of two AHEs could give rise to similar artifacts, making it difficult to distinguish between genuine THE with AHE and two-component AHE. Here we confirm genuine THE with AHE by means of transport and magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy, in which magnetic skyrmions are directly observed, and find that genuine THE occurs in the transition region of the AHE. In sharp contrast, the artifact "THE", or two-component AHE occurs well beyond the saturation of the "AHE component" (under the false assumption of THE+AHE). Furthermore, we distinguish artifact "THE" from genuine THE by three methods: 1. Minor loops, 2. Temperature dependence, 3. Gate dependence. Minor loops of genuine THE with AHE are always within the full loop, while minor loops of the artifact "THE" may reveal a single loop that cannot fit into the "AHE component". Besides, the temperature or gate dependence of the artifact "THE" may also be accompanied by a polarity change of the "AHE component", as the non-monotonic features vanish, while the temperature dependence of genuine THE with AHE reveals no such change. Our work may help future researchers to exercise cautions and use these methods to examine carefully in order to ascertain genuine THE.

75. Polymorphisms in the ADRB2 gene and Graves disease: a case-control study and a meta-analysis of available evidence

Abstract

Abstract Background The beta-2-Adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) gene on chromosome 5q33.1 is an important immunoregulatory factor. We and others have previously implicated chromosomal region 5q31-33 for contribution to the genetic susceptibility to Graves disease (GD) in East-Asian populations. Two recent studies showed associations between the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1042714 in the ADRB2 gene and GD. In this study, we aimed to fully investigate whether the ADRB2 gene conferred susceptibility to GD in Chinese population, and to perform a meta-analysis of association between ADRB2 and GD. Methods Approximately 1 kb upstream the transcription start site and the entire coding regions of the ADRB2 gene were resequenced in 48 Han Chinese individuals to determine the linkage disequilibrium (LD) patterns. Tag SNPs were selected and genotyped in a case-control collection of 1,118 South Han Chinese subjects, which included 428 GD patients and 690 control subjects. A meta-analysis was performed with the data obtained in the present samples and those available from prior studies. Results Fifteen SNPs in the ADRB2 gene were identified by resequencing and one SNP was novel. Ten tag SNPs were investigated further to assess association of ADRB2 in the case-control collection. Neither individual tag SNP nor haplotypes showed association with GD in Han Chinese population (P > 0.05). Our meta-analysis of the ADRB2 SNP rs1042714 measured heterogeneity between the ethnic groups (I2 = 53.1%) and no association to GD was observed in the overall three studies with a random effects model (OR = 1.13, 95% CI, 0.95 to 1.36; P = 0.18). However, significant association was found from the combined data of Caucasian population with a fixed effects model (OR = 1.18, 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.32; P = 0.002; I2 = 5.9%). Conclusion Our study indicated that the ADRB2 gene did not exert a substantial influence on GD susceptibility in Han Chinese population, but contributed to a detectable GD risk in Caucasian population. This inconsistency resulted largely from between-ethnicity heterogeneity.

Abstract

In this paper, we develop a novel weighted Laplacian method, which is partially inspired by the theory of graph Laplacian, to study recent popular graph problems, such as multilevel graph partitioning and balanced minimum cut problem, in a more convenient manner. Since the weighted Laplacian strategy inherits the virtues of spectral methods, graph algorithms designed using weighted Laplacian will necessarily possess more robust theoretical guarantees for algorithmic performances, comparing with those existing algorithms that are heuristically proposed. In order to illustrate its powerful utility both in theory and in practice, we also present two effective applications of our weighted Laplacian method to multilevel graph partitioning and balanced minimum cut problem, respectively. By means of variational methods and theory of partial differential equations (PDEs), we have established the equivalence relations among the weighted cut problem, balanced minimum cut problem and the initial clustering problem that arises in the middle stage of graph partitioning algorithms under a multilevel structure. These equivalence relations can indeed provide solid theoretical support for algorithms based on our proposed weighted Laplacian strategy. Moreover, from the perspective of the application to the balanced minimum cut problem, weighted Laplacian can make it possible for research of numerical solutions of PDEs to be a powerful tool for the algorithmic study of graph problems. Experimental results also indicate that the algorithm embedded with our strategy indeed outperforms other existing graph algorithms, especially in terms of accuracy, thus verifying the efficacy of the proposed weighted Laplacian.
