Ethyl acetate is one of typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitting from solvent use, and removing ethyl acetate from exhaust air is vital to VOCs abatement. The mesoporous manganese oxide (MnOx) samples were sonochemically synthesized by the reduction of KMnO4 using Mn(NO3)2. The characterization shows that γ‐MnO2, β‐MnO2, and bixbyite‐like Mn2O3 were obtained by calcining the MnOx samples from 200°C to 500°C. The results show that γ‐MnO2 and β‐MnO2 possess more Mn4+ than bixbyite‐like Mn2O3. β‐MnO2 has the highest contents of surface oxygen species (Oads) and average oxidation state (AOS) among the MnOx catalysts. Based on a 7‐day test, β‐MnO2 performed the highest activity for the catalytic ozonation of ethyl acetate compared with the other MnOx catalysts. The results show that ethyl acetate is easy to be destroyed but difficult to be completely mineralized by catalytic ozonation. Lower gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) leads to higher CO2 selectivity and more intermediate products form in the catalytic ozonation of ethyl acetate under higher GHSV. A further study indicates that β‐MnO2 has a long‐term stability for catalytic ozonation of ethyl acetate because the accumulation and the decomposition of intermediate products are in a dynamic equilibrium during the catalytic ozonation. BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to determine the effects of forage conservation method and condensed tannins (CT) in conserved forage on rumen fermentation. Purple prairie clover (PPC; Dalea purpurea Vent.) containing 84.5 g kg−1 dry matter (DM) of CT was harvested at full flower and preserved as freeze‐dried green chop (F), hay (H) or silage (S). Batch culture incubations were conducted using conserved forages as a substrate and treatments were arranged as 3 × 2 factorial design of forage type (F, H and S) with or without polyethylene glycol (PEG). PEG was used to isolate the effects of CT on fermentation. Incubation was repeated twice with quadruplicate vials for each treatment in each incubation. 15N‐labelled ammonium sulfate was used as microbial N marker and headspace gas was sampled to determine methane production. RESULTS: Concentrations of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber were lower (P < 0.01) in F than in H or S. Ensiling decreased (P < 0.001) total phenolics and extractable CT, but had no effect on total CT, whereas none of these phenolic fractions were altered in H. Hay and silage had lower (P < 0.01) true DM disappearance (TDMD) and NDF disappearance (NDFD) than F. Inclusion of PEG did not affect TDMD or NDFD after 8, 24 or 72 h of incubation. Productions of total gas, methane and total volatile fatty acid and the rate of gas production (c) were also similar, but ammonia was higher (P < 0.05) and microbial N was lower (P < 0.05) with than without PEG after 72 h of incubation. After 72 h, a lower (P < 0.001) proportion of acetate but higher (P < 0.05) proportion of propionate was noted with S, resulting in a lower (P < 0.001) acetate:propionate ratio as compared to F or H after 8 h of incubation. CONCLUSION: Condensed tannins in PPC decreased protein degradation in vitro, but had minimal effects on overall rumen fermentation, and conservation of PPC as hay or silage had little effect on the efficacy of CT in modulating rumen fermentation. © 2020 Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada. The present study assessed the effect of purple prairie clover (PPC) and PPC condensed tannins (CT) on the fecal microbiota of lambs using high-throughput 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing. A total of 18 individual lambs were randomly divided into three groups and fed either green chop alfalfa (Alf), a 40:60 (DM basis; Mix) mixture of Alf and PPC, or Mix supplemented with polyethylene glycol (Mix-P) for 18 days. Fecal samples were collected on days 13 through 18 using digital rectal retrieval. The DNA of fecal samples was extracted and the microbial 16S rRNA gene amplicons were sequenced using 454 pyrosequencing. Regardless of diet, the bacterial community was dominated by Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes with many sequences unclassified at the genus level. Forage type and CT had no effect on the fecal microbial composition at the phylum level or on α-diversity. Compared to the Alf diet, the Mix diet reduced the relative abundance of Akkermansia ( P = 0.03) and Asteroleplasma ( P = 0.05). Fecal microbial populations in Alf and Mix-P clustered separately from each other when assessed using unweighted UniFrac ( P < 0.05). These results indicate that PPC CT up to 36 g/kg DM in the diet had no major effect on fecal microbial flora at the phyla level and exerted only minor effects on the genera composition of fecal microbiota in lambs. Using the free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) techniques, we carried out a 3-year mono-factorial experiment in temperate paddy rice fields of Japan (1998–2000) and a 3-year multifactorial experiment in subtropical paddy rice fields in the Yangtze River delta in China (2001–2003), to investigate the methane (CH4) emissions in response to an elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (200±40 mmol mol−1 higher than that in the ambient atmosphere). No significant effect of the elevated CO2 upon seasonal accumulative CH4 emissions was observed in the first rice season, but significant stimulatory effects (CH4 increase ranging from 38% to 188%, with a mean of 88%) were observed in the second and third rice seasons in the fields with or without organic matter addition. The stimulatory effects of the elevated CO2 upon seasonal accumulative CH4 emissions were negatively correlated with the addition rates of decomposable organic carbon ( P<0.05), but positively with the rates of nitrogen fertilizers applied in either the current rice season ( P<0.05) or the whole year ( P<0.01). Six mechanisms were proposed to explain collectively the observations. Soil nitrogen availability was identified as an important regulator. The effect of soil nitrogen availability on the observed relation between elevated CO2 and CH4 emission can be explained by (a) modifying the C/N ratio of the plant residues formed in the previous growing season(s); (b) changing the inhibitory effect of high C/N ratio on plant residue decomposition in the current growing season; and (c) altering the stimulatory effects of CO2 enrichment upon plant growth, as well as nitrogen uptake in the current growing season. This study implies that the concurrent enrichment of reactive nitrogen in the global ecosystems may accelerate the increase of atmospheric methane by initiating a stimulatory effect of the ongoing dramatic atmospheric CO2 enrichment upon methane emissions from nitrogen-poor paddy rice ecosystems and further amplifying the existing stimulatory effect in nitrogen-rich paddy rice ecosystems. Catalytic oxidation has been extensively studied as a promising technology for the removal of toluene from industrial waste gases and indoor air. However, the debate regarding the oxidation mechanism is far from resolved. Ce x Mn 1- x O 2 catalysts with different mixing ratios are prepared by the sol-gel method and found to exhibit better catalytic activities for toluene oxidation than a single oxide. Characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that the doped Mn increases the number of oxygen vacancies and the ability of oxygen vacancies to activate aromatic rings, which promotes the rate-determining step of toluene oxidation, i.e. , ring-opening reactions. The oxidation products detected by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and Vocus proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (Vocus-PTR-MS) show that the doped Mn significantly improves the ring-opening efficiency and subsequently yields more short-chain products, such as pyruvic acid and acetic acid. A comprehensive oxidation pathway of toluene is refined in this work.

Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a common chronic intestinal disease. Protopine isolated from different plants has been investigated to understand its special functions on varied diseases. However, the regulatory effects of protopine on the progression of IBD remain unclear. Our study is aimed to explore the effects of protopine on the progression of IBD and its underlying regulatory mechanism of action., Methods: The cell viability was assessed through MTT colorimetric assay. The protein expressions of genes were examined by Western blot analysis. The cell apoptosis and reactive oxygen species level were measured using flow cytometry. The levels of inflammation and oxidative stress-related proteins were tested through enzyme-linked-immunosorbent serologic assay. The intracellular Ca 2+ concentration and mitochondrial membrane potential were measured through immunofluorescence assay., Results: First, different concentrations of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were treated with NCM460 cells to establish IBD cell model, and 5-μg/mL LPS was chosen for followed experiments. In this study, we discovered that protopine relieved the LPS-induced inhibited intestinal epithelial cell viability and enhanced cell apoptosis. Moreover, protopine attenuated LPS-stimulated inflammation activation and oxidative stress. Further experiments illustrated that the increased intracellular Ca 2+ concentration and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential stimulated by LPS were reversed by protopine treatment. Finally, through Western blot analysis, it was demonstrated that protopine retarded the activated NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways mediated by LPS., Conclusion: Protopine alleviated LPS-triggered intestinal epithelial cell injury by inhibiting NLRP3 and NF-κB signaling pathways to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Increasing levels of atmospheric CO 2 are expected to enhance crop yields and alter soil greenhouse gas fluxes from rice paddies. While elevated CO 2 ( E CO 2 ) effects on CH 4 emissions from rice paddies have been studied in some detail, little is known how E CO 2 might affect N 2 O fluxes or yield-scaled emissions. Here, we report on a multi-site, multi-year in-situ FACE (free-air CO 2 enrichment) study, aiming to determine N 2 O fluxes and crop yields from Chinese subtropical rice systems as affected by E CO 2 . In this study, we tested various N fertilization and residue addition treatments, with rice being grown under either E CO 2 (+200 μmol/mol) or ambient control. Across the six site-years, rice straw and grain yields under E CO 2 were increased by 9%-40% for treatments fertilized with ≥150 kg N/ha, while seasonal N 2 O emissions were decreased by 23%-73%. Consequently, yield-scaled N 2 O emissions were significantly lower under E CO 2 . For treatments receiving insufficient fertilization (≤125 kg N/ha), however, no significant E CO 2 effects on N 2 O emissions were observed. The mitigating effect of E CO 2 upon N 2 O emissions is closely associated with plant N uptake and a reduction of soil N availability. Nevertheless, increases in yield-scaled N 2 O emissions with increasing N surplus suggests that N surplus is a useful indicator for assessing N 2 O emissions from rice paddies. Our findings indicate that with rising atmospheric CO 2 soil N 2 O emissions from rice paddies will decrease, given that the farmers' N fertilization is usually sufficient for crop growth. The expected decrease in N 2 O emissions was calculated to compensate 24% of the simultaneously observed increase in CH 4 emissions under E CO 2 . This shows that for an agronomic and environmental assessment of E CO 2 effects on rice systems, not only CH 4 emissions, but also N 2 O fluxes and yield-scaled emissions need to be considered for identifying most climate-friendly and economically viable options for future rice production., (© 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

A method for measuring NO and NO2 exchanges between cultivated lands and the atmosphere in a FACE (free-air CO2 enrichment) study is described. With this method, gas is sampled with a technique of static-opaque-chamber and the fluxes of NO and NO2 exchanges are determined by analyzing the NO and NO2 concentrations with a chemiluminescent NOx analyzer. Application of this method in the FACE study of a rice-wheat ecosystem has indicated that reliable data on the exchange fluxes could be obtained. Over the non-waterlogged period of a rice-wheat rotation, net emission of NO from the fields was observed, while net uptake of NO2 occurred. The daily net emission of NO did not correlated with the soil temperature, but negatively depended upon soil moisture (R2 = 0.82, P < 0.001). A significant seasonal variation in the net uptake of NO2 was observed, which was regulated by wheat growth status. The daily uptake of NO2 depended upon both soil temperature and soil moisture. The dependence for each could be described with a parabola function (for soil temperature: R2 = 0.74, P < 0.001; for soil moisture: R2 = 0.69, P < 0.001). An elevation of atmospheric CO2 by 200 +/- 40 mumol.mol-1 mitigated the net emission of NO by 19% (t-test P = 0.096) and might be possible to reduce the net uptake of NO2 by 10% (t-test P = 0.26), which was likely due to the stimulated wheat growth.

We firstly introduced the method for determining the net ecosystem exchange fluxes of CO2 (NEE) between croplands and atmosphere, based on field measurements using static opaquechamber/gas chromatography methods was introduced, and the application of this method in the FACE (free-air CO2 enrichment) study to examine the effects of elevated CO2 on the NEE over a typical paddy ecosystem was carried out, because of lacking in observation data for some necessary parameters, e.g., dark maintenance respiration coefficient, only the minimum value of NEE (NEEmin) was calculated based on opaque-chamber measurements. The NEEmin data indicate that CO2 elevated by 200 +/- 40 mumol.mol-1 significantly increased the ecosystem uptake of atmospheric CO2 by a factor ca. 3. To accurately determine the NEE based on opaquechamber measurements, dark maintenance respiration coefficient, above-ground biomass and root: shoot, i.e. R:S, ratio of root to shoot should be observed over the whole growing season.

A method was specially designed and applied for measuring CO2 concentration of soil air over the non-waterlogged period of a rice-wheat rotation on an available area of about 1.6 m2 in a FACE (free-air CO2 enrichment) study. Based on measuring the CO2 concentration over the soil profile of 0-30 cm in depth using this method, the CO2 profile in the soils of wheat fields under elevated and ambient CO2 and the bare land under ambient CO2 was investigated and some preliminary results were obtained. Within 0-30 cm in soil depth, CO2 in the pores of the upper soil layers vertically diffused upwards much more quickly than that in the lower soil layers. During the period with active wheat growth, elevated atmospheric CO2 by 200 +/- 40 mumol.mol-1 significantly increased the CO2 concentration in soil air within 0-30 cm in depth by 14% +/- 5% (t-test, P < 0.001).

The latest researches on the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on the exchanges of trace gases (e.g., CO2, CH4 and N2O) between the atmosphere and ecosystems were reviewed. The techniques and methods involved in the researches were introduced firstly. Then the review mainly focused upon the results from those studies using the open-top-chamber (OTC) methods and the free-air carbon dioxide enrichment (FACE) system. Generally, elevated atmospheric CO2 may stimulate biomass accumulation, and enlarge C/N ratio in plant tissue so as to reduce the decomposition of organic matter. This action could increase CO2 sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems. Elevated atmospheric CO2 could impact on methanogenic bacteria and CH4 emissions. An increase in CH4 emissions from wetland may appear. The argument among the responses of N2O emissions to elevated CO2, however, was inconsistent. So far, no study on other trace gases was reported. More efforts should be taken in the research on the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on the exchange of trace gases.

Effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on CH4 and N2O emissions during the paddy rice-growing season were examined in a FACE (free-air carbon dioxide enrichment) study. The emission fluxes of CH4 and N2O from paddy rice fields were measured using methods based on static opaque-chamber and gas chromatography techniques. Synthetic fertilizer N was amended for the rice-growing season at two rates, 150 and 250 kgN.hm-2 and the atmospheric CO2 was enriched by 200 mumol.mol-1. At both N levels, the preliminary results indicate that no significant effect of CO2 enrichment on CH4 and N2O emissions from the rice paddy fields was detected. The result on CH4 emissions is inconsistent with the most literatures, and the result on N2O emissions is consistent with the most literatures.
