An innovative process step-feed Anaerobic-multiple Anoxic/Oxic-Membrane Bioreactor [An-M(A/O)-MBR] was developed for biological phosphorus and nitrogen removal from synthetic domestic wastewater. This process was composed of an anaerobic reactor, a multiple phases of aerobic and anoxic zones (multiple A/O zone) in sequence followed by a continuous aerated MBR. Performance of the laboratory-scale system was investigated at different organic compounds in the influent. The results showed that, under the conditions imposed, although the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) concentration fluctuated in the range of 120–1,200 mg/L, high performance on COD removal was achieved in the system and more than 95% removal efficiency was obtained throughout the operation, the COD concentrations in the effluent were lower than 50 mg/L throughout the operation. However, COD levels in the influent had great influence on nitrogen and phosphorus removal. When COD level was low (120–200 mg/L), poor performance of nitrogen and phosphorus removal were obtained because of carbon source deficiency. Good performance on total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal were achieved when COD level was in the range of 350–710 mg/L, and the average removal efficiency of TN and TP was above 85 and 84%, respectively. But when COD increased to a high level (1,110–1,200 mg/L), the performance of nitrogen and phosphorus removal also deteriorated possibly because of the shift of the composition of the microbial communities. Highly graphitized mesocarbon microbead (MCMB) powders, which consist of spherical artificial graphite particles, were treated in Ar–H2–SF6 radio-frequency inductively coupled thermal plasma. The results of X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and element analysis showed that the plasma treatment greatly affected the surface structure and chemical composition of the MCMB powders. Sulfur and fluorine could be incorporated into the particle by treating them with plasma containing SF6, and this plasma modification improved the electrochemical properties of the powders. A lithium-ion rechargeable cell with a negative electrode of plasma-treated powder had a discharge capacity as much as 13% greater than that of a cell with a negative electrode of untreated powder, while its irreversible capacity loss (ICL) was as much as 9% less. The specific ICL calculated by dividing the ICL by surface area decreased as the BET surface area increased. Furthermore, a new plateau near 2V was added to the discharge curve by treating the MCMB powder with SF6 plasma but not by treating it with Ar–H2, Ar–N2, Ar–H2–CO2, or Ar–N2–CO2 plasmas. We review our recent work on lasing in active random media. Light scattering, which had been regarded as detrimental to lasing action for a long time, actually provided coherent feedback for lasing. The fundamental difference and transition between a random laser with coherent feedback and a random laser with incoherent feedback were illustrated. We also trapped laser light in micrometer-sized random media. The trapping was caused by disorder-induced scattering and interference. The influence of Ar-H2-SF6 plasma on the surface structure and electrochemical properties of mesocarbon microbeads (MCMB) was studied by treating MCMB with Ar-H2-SF6 radio-frequency inductively coupled thermal plasma. The results demonstrated that the plasma-induced surface modifications depend on the plasma conditions, especially the plasma pressure, and that the electrochemical properties of plasma-treated MCMB depend on the rate of SF6 flow.
