OBJECTIVE: The incidence of SAP (stroke-associated pneumonia) is high in integrated ICU (Intensive Care Unit), and it might result in sepsis, which exacerbates the clinical outcome and increases mortality. It is necessary to investigate the epidemiological features of post-stroke infection and sepsis, identify the risk factors and analyze the prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 329 patients with cerebral infarction or cerebral hemorrhage, from seven tertiary university hospitals in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2016. Basic demographic and clinical data including common health evaluation, stroke severity, microbiological parameters, surgical interventions and treatments were recorded for the analysis. SAP was diagnosed according to the criteria and recommendation from American Heart Association (AHA). RESULTS: 188 (66.4%) patients suffered pneumonia, 124 patients were diagnosed as SAP. Compared with SAP, patients with non-SAP pulmonary infection had prolonged mechanical ventilation time, prolonged central venous catheter indwelling time, and higher incidence of sepsis (17.7% vs. 48.4%). 53 patients (18.7%) developed sepsis during hospitalization, whose mortality rate during hospitalization and the occurrence of neurologic dysfunction at 3 months were significantly increased (p<0.05). 130 positive results of sputum cultures were found. The detected pathogens were mainly gram-negative bacteria. The pathogenic detection rate of non-SAP patients with pulmonary infection was higher (78.1%). The in-hospital mortality was 16.3% and the related risk factors were higher NIHSS score at admission, lower GCS score at admission, pulmonary infection (especially non-SAP pulmonary infection) and sepsis during hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS: The incidence of pulmonary infection after stroke in the integrated ICU is high, and it is easy to be complicated with sepsis, prolonging the mechanical ventilation time, central venous catheter indwelling time and hospitalization time, and the prognosis of long-term neurological function is relatively poor. The definition of stroke-associated pneumonia has implications for the classification of clinical infections, the prediction of possible pathogenic pathogens, and the guidance of anti-infective treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the effect of micro ribonucleic acid (miR)-133b on 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP+)-induced apoptosis in the Parkinson’s disease (PD) model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PC12 cells were induced by different concentrations of MPP+ to establish the PD cell model. Subsequently, the survival rate of PC12 cells was detected using Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. Quantitative Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the expression of miR-133b in the PD model induced by different concentrations of MPP+. Next, PC12 cells were transfected with miR-133b mimic and miR-negative control (NC), and divided into MPP+ group, MPP+ + miR-NC group and MPP+ + miR-133b mimic group. Transfection efficiency was verified using qRT-PCR. The apoptosis of cells was detected using terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Moreover, the expressions of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) and phosphorylated (p)-ERK1/2 were determined using Western blotting. RESULTS: After MPP+ treatment, the survival rate of PC12 cells significantly declined (p<0.05). MPP+ exhibited toxicity against PC12 cells in a concentration-dependent manner. Meanwhile, cell survival rate decreased remarkably with the increase of MPP+ concentration (p<0.05). With increased concentration of MPP+, the expression of miR-133b in the PD cell model declined significantly (p<0.05). The apoptosis of PC12 cells was remarkably inhibited by overexpression of miR-133b in the PD cell model (p<0.05). In addition, the protein expression of p-ERK1/2 in PC12 cells was notably reduced after overexpression of miR-133b in the PD cell model (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: MiR-133b is lowly expressed in the PD cell model. Furthermore, overexpression of miR-133b inhibits cell apoptosis in the PD cell model by regulating the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. Our experiment was conducted to understand the effects of foliar sprays of paclobutrazol (PBZ), its mixture with abscisic acid (ABA), or water (control) on leaf carbon-use efficiency (CUEl), photosynthesis, and respiration of Euonymus japonicus seedlings. Plants were pot-grown in a greenhouse. The study revealed that elevated stomatal conductance, mesophyll conductance, and maximum rate of Rubisco carboxylation (Vcmax) in plants treated with PBZ could strongly improve net photosynthetic rate (PN). ABA could antagonize the increase of mesophyll conductance and stomatal conductance by PBZ, thereby inhibiting the improvement of photosynthesis by PBZ. The combination of PBZ and ABA significantly reduced day respiration (Rd) and dark respiration (Rdk), resulting in the increased CUEl, PN/Rd, and PN/Rdk. The increased PN in the PBZ treatment led to slightly increased PN/Rd and CUEl. Thus, the CUEl could be improved by PBZ and its mixtures with ABA by regulating leaf photosynthesis and respiration. CoFe alloy nanoflakes (NFs) with diameter and thickness on nanoscale were prepared by hydrogen-thermal reduction in CoFe2O4 flakes at 400 °C for 60 min. The effective complex permittivity and permeability of CoFe alloy NFs/paraffin composites were measured and compared with that of CoFe alloy nanoparticles (NPs)/paraffin composites. Due to the two-dimensional shape character, the real part of permittivity and permeability of CoFe alloy NFs was rather higher than that of CoFe alloy NPs. Electromagnetic wave absorbing (EMA) performance of both CoFe alloy NFs and NPs was evaluated by using transmission line theory. The effective EMA band position of the coating with CoFe alloy NFs as fillers was found to locate in the range of 2–4 GHz, while the effective EMA band position of the coating containing CoFe alloy NPs as fillers was located in the range 8–18 GHz. A maximum reflection loss (RLmax) of -57.8 dB was achieved in a coating containing CoFe alloy NFs as fillers, which is much higher than the -16.6 dB of coatings with CoFe alloy NPs. OBJECTIVE: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is one of the most ordinary malignant tumors worldwide. Recent researches have proved that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play vital roles in many diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the exact function of lncRNA DiGeorge syndrome critical region gene 5 (DGCR5) in the development of NSCLC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Real Time-quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR) was utilized to detect DGCR5 expression in paired NSCLC patients' tissue samples and cell lines. The function of DGCR5 in NSCLC was detected through wound healing assay and transwell assay in vitro. Besides, mechanism assays were conducted to observe the interaction between DGCR5 and microRNA-218-5p (miR-218-5p). RESULTS: DGCR5 was remarkably highly expressed in NSCLC tissues compared to that of adjacent normal tissues. The migration and invasion of NSCLC cells were significantly promoted via overexpression of DGCR5. However, the silence of DGCR5 significantly inhibited NSCLC cell migration and invasion. Moreover, RT-qPCR results revealed that miR-218-5p was down-regulated via overexpression of DGCR5, while miR-218-5p was up-regulated after the knockdown of DGCR5. Further experiments showed that miR-218-5p was a direct target of DGCR5 in NSCLC. CONCLUSIONS: DGCR5 enhances NSCLC cell migration and invasion via targeting miR-218-5p, indicating that DGCR5 may be a potential therapeutic target in NSCLC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new method was established to calculate the intrinsic or effective permeability in composite media with low filler concentrations. The calculation instability of Bruggeman effective media theory was avoided through a media reconstruction, and thus the prediction accuracy and calculation consistence were greatly improved. The established method has been tested in Fe/SiO2 based composite media, and its validity been preliminarily proved. Side-emitting lenses are essential devices in some special lighting fields. Two types of side-emitting lenses with refractive and total reflective free-form surfaces are introduced. The principles of geometric optics and non-imaging optics are adopted to construct the free-form surfaces without complex mapping or a differential iteration process. As an example, an elevated taxiway edge light is designed for airfield lighting. A side-emitting lens with two sawtooth additions on top is designed to meet the luminous intensity distribution required by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). An analysis is carried out to determine tolerance limits during manufacture and installation. Computer simulation results show that a side-emitting efficiency of 85.4% is achieved for a Cree XP-E LED. The rational design of noble metal-free electrocatalysts that are highly active, robustly stable, and capable of delivering large current densities (＞500 mA cm−2) at low applied potentials (＜300 mV), in particular for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), is critical for practical use in electro-driven water-splitting devices. Herein, we report a facile scalable and one-step electrochemical deposition approach for the development of a self-supported 3D nanoporous S-doped amorphous NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe composite electrode with outstanding OER electrocatalytic activity and robust durability in alkaline media. Benefiting from the 3D nanoporous architectures and their in situ growth on a highly conductive substrate, the novel S-doped NiFe2O4/Ni3Fe composite electrode offers an ideal platform for fast electron transport and efficient mass transport. It also provides abundant active surface area as well as accessible active sites for a catalytic reaction. Impressively, the S-doped composite electrode displays superior OER activity in 1.0 M KOH that compares favorably with the state-of-the-art RuO2 catalyst. Low overpotentials of 260 and 285 mV (iR corrected) are required to reach long-term stable current densities of 100 and 500 mA cm−2 for OER, respectively. The electrolyzer cell obtained by pairing this S-doped composite electrode as an anode with a Ni–Mo based cathode for overall water-splitting works efficiently in both 1.0 M (1.52 V for 10 mA cm−2 and 1.79 V for 100 mA cm−2) and 30 wt% KOH (1.69 V for 100 mA cm−2) solutions, with long durability for over 220 h.
