Abstract

In our quest to understand the nature of dark matter and discover its non-gravitational interactions with ordinary matter, we propose an experiment using a \pbo ~calorimeter to search for or set new limits on the production rate of i) hidden sector particles in the $3 - 60$ MeV mass range via their $e^+e^-$ decay (or $\gamma\gamma$ decay with limited tracking), and ii) the hypothetical X17 particle, claimed in multiple recent experiments. The search for these particles is motivated by new hidden sector models and dark matter candidates introduced to account for a variety of experimental and observational puzzles: the small-scale structure puzzle in cosmological simulations, anomalies such as the 4.2$\sigma$ disagreement between experiments and the standard model prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment, and the excess of $e^+e^-$ pairs from the $^8$Be M1 and $^4$He nuclear transitions to their ground states observed by the ATOMKI group. In these models, the $1 - 100$ MeV mass range is particularly well-motivated and the lower part of this range still remains unexplored. Our proposed direct detection experiment will use a magnetic-spectrometer-free setup (the PRad apparatus) to detect all three final state particles in the visible decay of a hidden sector particle allowing for an effective control of the background and will cover the proposed mass range in a single setting. The use of the well-demonstrated PRad setup allows for an essentially ready-to-run and uniquely cost-effective search for hidden sector particles in the $3 - 60$ MeV mass range with a sensitivity of 8.9$\times$10$^{-8}$ - 5.8$\times$10$^{-9}$ to $\epsilon^2$, the square of the kinetic mixing interaction constant between hidden and visible sectors. Abstract

Valley degree of freedom, an excellent information carrier in valleytronics, has been further introduced into advanced microstructure systems for achieving the acoustic valley-Hall topological insulators (VHTIs), which host valley-projected edge states suppressing the undesired sound backscattering under certain perturbations. Therein, the majority of previous literatures focused on single frequency region, and the lack of capability of simultaneous multi-band operation with individual control radically impedes their potential applications. Here, a binary topological-encoded acoustic VHTI is investigated both theoretically and experimentally to manipulate each of the dual-band valley-projected edge states. Through arranging different coding elements derived from the combined valley-Chern numbers, the existence and propagation directions of the frequency selective edge states can be configured in corresponding frequency regions individually. On this basis, three types of proof-of-concept acoustic topological-encoded functional devices are designed, including frequency beam splitter, anti-interference demultiplex topological sensing and composite topological whispering gallery. Abstract

We report on a windowless, high-density, gas flow target at Jefferson Lab that was used to measure $r_p$, the root-mean-square charge radius of the proton. To our knowledge, this is the first such system used in a fixed-target experiment at a (non-storage ring) electron accelerator. The target achieved its design goal of an areal density of 2$\times$10$^{18}$ atoms/cm$^2$, with the gas uniformly distributed over the 4 cm length of the cell and less than 1% residual gas outside the cell. This design eliminated scattering from the end caps of the target cell, a problem endemic to previous measurements of the proton charge radius in electron scattering experiments, and permitted a precise, model-independent extraction of $r_p$ by reaching unprecedentedly low values of $Q^2$, the square of the electron's transfer of four-momentum to the proton.

Abstract

Particle detectors based on liquid argon are now recognised as an attractive technology for dark matter direct detection and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering measurement. A program using a dual-phase liquid argon detector with a fiducial mass of 200~kg to detect coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at Taishan Nuclear Power Plant has been proposed. SiPMs will be used as the photon sensor because of their high radio-purity and high photon detection efficiency. S13370-6050CN SiPM, made by Hamamatsu, is a candidate for the detector. Abstract

The PRad experiment has credibly demonstrated the advantages of the calorimetric method in e-p scattering experiments to measure the proton root-mean-square (RMS) charge radius with high accuracy. The PRad result, within its experimental uncertainties, is in agreement with the small radius measured in muonic hydrogen spectroscopy experiments and it was a critical input in the recent revision of the CODATA recommendation for the proton charge radius. Consequently, the PRad result is in direct conflict with all modern electron scattering experiments. Most importantly, it is 5.8% smaller than the value from the most precise electron scattering experiment to date, and this difference is about three standard deviations given the precision of the PRad experiment. As the first experiment of its kind, PRad did not reach the highest precision allowed by the calorimetric technique. Here we propose a new (and) upgraded experiment -- PRad-II, which will reduce the overall experimental uncertainties by a factor of 3.8 compared to PRad and address this as yet unsettled controversy in subatomic physics. In addition, PRad-II will be the first lepton scattering experiment to reach the Q^2 range of 10^{-5} GeV^2 allowing a more accurate and robust extraction of the proton charge radius. The muonic hydrogen result with its unprecedented precision (~0.05%) determines the CODATA value of the proton charge radius, hence, it is critical to evaluate possible systematic uncertainties of those experiments, such as the laser frequency calibration that was raised in recent review articles. The PRad-II experiment with its projected total uncertainty of 0.43% could demonstrate whether there is any systematic difference between $e-p$ scattering and muonic hydrogen results. Abstract

Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental programs at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the hadronic physics program at Jefferson Lab (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of nucleons and nuclei, in both the elastic and deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons from the nucleon enables a model independent determination of its electromagnetic form factors. Also, the deeply-virtual scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons allows unambiguous separation of the different contributions to the cross section of the lepto-production of photons and of lepton-pairs, enabling an accurate determination of the nucleons and nuclei generalized parton distributions, and providing an access to the gravitational form factors. Furthermore, positron beams offer the possibility of alternative tests of the Standard Model of particle physics through the search of a dark photon, the precise measurement of electroweak couplings, and the investigation of charged lepton flavor violation. Abstract

We have measured the properties of scintillation light in liquid argon doped with xenon concentrations from 165 ppm to 10,010 ppm using a $^{22}$Na source. The energy transfer processes in the xenon-doped liquid argon are discussed in detail, and a new waveform model is established and used to fit the average waveform. The time profile of the scintillation photon in the xenon-doped liquid argon and of the TPB emission are presented. The quantities of xenon-doped are controlled by a Mass Flow Controller which is calibrated via a Redusial Gas Analyzer to ensure that the xenon concentration is accurate. In addition, a successful test of $^{83{\rm m}}$Kr as a calibration source has been implemented in the xenon-doped liquid argon detector for the first time. By comparing the light yield of the $^{22}$Na and $^{83{\rm m}}$Kr, it can be concluded that the scintillation efficiency is almost same over the range of 41.5 keV to 511 keV., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

The boron-10 based Multi-Grid detector is being developed as an alternative to helium-3 based neutron detectors. At the European Spallation Source, the detector will be used for time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy at cold to thermal neutron energies. The objective of this work is to investigate fine time- and energy-resolved effects of the Multi-Grid detector, down to a few $\mu$eV, while comparing it to the performance of a typical helium-3 tube. Furthermore, it is to characterize differences between the detector technologies in terms of internal scattering, as well as the time reconstruction of ~ $\mu$s short neutron pulses. The data were taken at the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin, where the Multi-Grid detector and a helium-3 tube were installed at the ESS test beamline, V20. Using a Fermi-chopper, the neutron beam of the reactor was chopped into a few tens of $\mu$s wide pulses before reaching the detector, located a few tens of cm downstream. The data of the measurements show an agreement between the derived and calculated neutron detection efficiency curve. The data also provide fine details on the effect of internal scattering, and how it can be reduced. For the first time, the chopper resolution was comparable to the timing resolution of the Multi-Grid detector. This allowed a detailed study of time- and energy resolved effects, as well as a comparison with a typical helium-3 tube., Comment: 37 pages, 21 figures

Abstract

Despite being only one-atom thick, defect-free graphene is considered to be completely impermeable to all gases and liquids. This conclusion is based on theory and supported by experiments that could not detect gas permeation through micrometre-size membranes within a detection limit of 10^5 to 10^6 atoms per second. Here, using small monocrystalline containers tightly sealed with graphene, we show that defect-free graphene is impermeable with an accuracy of eight to nine orders of magnitude higher than in the previous experiments. We could discern permeation of just a few helium atoms per hour, and this detection limit is also valid for all other tested gases (neon, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, krypton and xenon), except for hydrogen. Hydrogen shows noticeable permeation, even though its molecule is larger than helium and should experience a higher energy barrier. The puzzling observation is attributed to a two-stage process that involves dissociation of molecular hydrogen at catalytically active graphene ripples, followed by adsorbed atoms flipping to the other side of the graphene sheet with a relatively low activation energy of about 1.0 electronvolt, a value close to that previously reported for proton transport. Our work provides a key reference for the impermeability of two-dimensional materials and is important from a fundamental perspective and for their potential applications.

Abstract

This paper describes a new modeling framework for microscopic to reservoir-scale simulations of hydraulic fracturing and production. The approach builds upon a fusion of two existing high-performance simulators for reservoir-scale behavior: the GEOS code for hydromechanical evolution during stimulation and the TOUGH+ code for multi-phase flow during production. The reservoir-scale simulations are informed by experimental and modeling studies at the laboratory scale to incorporate important micro-scale mechanical processes and chemical reactions occurring within the fractures, the shale matrix, and at the fracture-fluid interfaces. These processes include, among others, changes in stimulated fracture permeability as a result of proppant behavior rear-rangement or embedment, or mineral scale precipitation within pores and microfractures, at µm to cm scales. In our new modeling framework, such micro-scale testing and modeling provides upscaled hydromechanical parameters for the reservoir scale models. We are currently testing the new modeling framework using field data and core samples from the Hydraulic Fracturing Field Test (HFTS), a recent field-based joint research experiment with intense monitoring of hydraulic fracturing and shale production in the Wolfcamp Formation in the Permian Basin (USA). Below, we present our approach coupling the reservoir simulators GEOS and TOUGH+ informed by upscaled parameters from micro-scale experiments and modeling. We provide a brief overview of the HFTS and the available field data, and then discuss the ongoing application of our new workflow to the HFTS data set.

Abstract

A graph-theoretic parameter, in a form of a function, called the extra-factorial sum is discussed. The main results are presented in ref. [1] (Nastou et al., Optim Lett, 10, 1203-1220, 2016) and the reader is strongly advised to study the aforementioned paper. The current work presents subject matter in a tutorial form with proofs and some newer unpublished results towards the end (lemma six extension and lemma seven). The extra-factorial sum is relevant to Hamiltonian cycles of complete weighted graphs $WH_n$ with $n$ vertices and is obtained for each edge of $WH_n$. If this sum is multiplied by $1 / (n - 2)$ then it gives directly the arithmetic mean of the sum of lengths $l_i$ of all Hamiltonian cycles that traverse a selected edge $e_q$. The number of terms in this sum is a factorial proven to be $(n - 2)!$ which signifies that its value depends on $n$. Using the extra-factorial sum, the arithmetic mean of the sum of the squared lengths of $(n - 1)! / 2$ Hamiltonian cycles of $WH_{n}$ can be obtained as well., Comment: 7 pages, 13 figures

66. PRad-II: A New Upgraded High Precision Measurement of the Proton Charge Radius

Abstract

The PRad experiment has credibly demonstrated the advantages of thecalorimetric method in e-p scattering experiments to measure the protonroot-mean-square (RMS) charge radius with high accuracy. The PRad result,within its experimental uncertainties, is in agreement with the small radiusmeasured in muonic hydrogen spectroscopy experiments and it was a criticalinput in the recent revision of the CODATA recommendation for the proton chargeradius. Consequently, the PRad result is in direct conflict with all modernelectron scattering experiments. Most importantly, it is 5.8% smaller than thevalue from the most precise electron scattering experiment to date, and thisdifference is about three standard deviations given the precision of the PRadexperiment. As the first experiment of its kind, PRad did not reach the highestprecision allowed by the calorimetric technique. Here we propose a new (and)upgraded experiment -- PRad-II, which will reduce the overall experimentaluncertainties by a factor of 3.8 compared to PRad and address this as yetunsettled controversy in subatomic physics. In addition, PRad-II will be thefirst lepton scattering experiment to reach the Q^2 range of 10^{-5} GeV^2allowing a more accurate and robust extraction of the proton charge radius. Themuonic hydrogen result with its unprecedented precision (~0.05%) determines theCODATA value of the proton charge radius, hence, it is critical to evaluatepossible systematic uncertainties of those experiments, such as the laserfrequency calibration that was raised in recent review articles. The PRad-IIexperiment with its projected total uncertainty of 0.43% could demonstratewhether there is any systematic difference between $e-p$ scattering and muonichydrogen results. PRad-II will establish a new precision frontier in electronscattering and open doors for future physics opportunities.

Abstract

We analyze coherent wave transport in a new physical setting associated with multimode wave systems where reflection is completely suppressed and mode-dependent losses together with mode-mixing are dictating the wave propagation. An additional physical constraint is the fact that in realistic circumstances the access to the scattering (or transmission) matrix is incomplete. We have addressed all these challenges by providing a statistical description of wave transport which fuses together a free probability theory approach with a Filtered Random Matrix ensemble. Our theoretical predictions have been tested successfully against experimental data of light transport in multimode fibers.

Abstract

We describe the 2017 version of Microsoft's conversational speech recognition system, in which we update our 2016 system with recent developments in neural-network-based acoustic and language modeling to further advance the state of the art on the Switchboard speech recognition task. The system adds a CNN-BLSTM acoustic model to the set of model architectures we combined previously, and includes character-based and dialog session aware LSTM language models in rescoring. For system combination we adopt a two-stage approach, whereby subsets of acoustic models are first combined at the senone/frame level, followed by a word-level voting via confusion networks. We also added a confusion network rescoring step after system combination. The resulting system yields a 5.1\% word error rate on the 2000 Switchboard evaluation set.

Abstract

The inorganic crystals have been widely used for dark matter direct searching for many decades. However, limited by the crystal growth technique, a lot of small crystals have to be used together for large target mass, which results in a degradation of light collection efficiency. An experiment was built up to study the degradation, and the method of soaking crystals into mineral oil to improve the efficiency as well as reduce the interface effect were proposed and validated. Good data and MC agreements were achieved in the experiment.

Abstract

Conversational speech recognition has served as a flagship speech recognition task since the release of the Switchboard corpus in the 1990s. In this paper, we measure the human error rate on the widely used NIST 2000 test set, and find that our latest automated system has reached human parity. The error rate of professional transcribers is 5.9% for the Switchboard portion of the data, in which newly acquainted pairs of people discuss an assigned topic, and 11.3% for the CallHome portion where friends and family members have open-ended conversations. In both cases, our automated system establishes a new state of the art, and edges past the human benchmark, achieving error rates of 5.8% and 11.0%, respectively. The key to our system's performance is the use of various convolutional and LSTM acoustic model architectures, combined with a novel spatial smoothing method and lattice-free MMI acoustic training, multiple recurrent neural network language modeling approaches, and a systematic use of system combination., Comment: Revised for publication, updated results

Abstract

We describe Microsoft's conversational speech recognition system, in which we combine recent developments in neural-network-based acoustic and language modeling to advance the state of the art on the Switchboard recognition task. Inspired by machine learning ensemble techniques, the system uses a range of convolutional and recurrent neural networks. I-vector modeling and lattice-free MMI training provide significant gains for all acoustic model architectures. Language model rescoring with multiple forward and backward running RNNLMs, and word posterior-based system combination provide a 20% boost. The best single system uses a ResNet architecture acoustic model with RNNLM rescoring, and achieves a word error rate of 6.9% on the NIST 2000 Switchboard task. The combined system has an error rate of 6.2%, representing an improvement over previously reported results on this benchmark task.

Abstract

We propose to measure the photo-production cross section of $J/{\psi}$ near threshold, in search of the recently observed LHCb hidden-charm resonances $P_c$(4380) and $P_c$(4450) consistent with 'pentaquarks'. The observation of these resonances in photo-production will provide strong evidence of the true resonance nature of the LHCb states, distinguishing them from kinematic enhancements. A bremsstrahlung photon beam produced with an 11 GeV electron beam at CEBAF covers the energy range of $J/{\psi}$ production from the threshold photo-production energy of 8.2 GeV, to an energy beyond the presumed $P_c$(4450) resonance. The experiment will be carried out in Hall C at Jefferson Lab using a 50{\mu}A electron beam incident on a 9% copper radiator. The resulting photon beam passes through a 15 cm liquid hydrogen target, producing $J/{\psi}$ mesons through a diffractive process in the $t$-channel, or through a resonant process in the $s$- and $u$-channel. The decay $e^+e^-$ pair of the $J/{\psi}$ will be detected in coincidence using the two high-momentum spectrometers of Hall C. The spectrometer settings have been optimized to distinguish the resonant $s$- and $u$-channel production from the diffractive $t$-channel $J/{\psi}$ production. The $s$- and $u$-channel production of the charmed 5-quark resonance dominates the $t$-distribution at large $t$. The momentum and angular resolution of the spectrometers is sufficient to observe a clear resonance enhancement in the total cross section and $t$-distribution. We request a total of 11 days of beam time with 9 days to carry the main experiment and 2 days to acquire the needed $t$-channel elastic $J/{\psi}$ production data for a calibration measurement. This calibration measurement in itself will greatly enhance our knowledge of $t$-channel elastic $J/{\psi}$ production near threshold., Comment: This document is an updated version of the original proposal PR12-16-007, which was approved with an 'A' rating and a 'high-impact' label by the Jefferson Lab PAC 44 in July 2016. Abstract

Soil organisms are affected by the presence of predatory protists. However, it remains poorly understood how predatory protists can affect plant disease incidence and how fertilization regimes can affect these interactions. Here, we characterise the rhizosphere bacteria, fungi and protists over eleven growing seasons of tomato planting under three fertilization regimes, i.e conventional, organic and bioorganic, and with different bacterial wilt disease incidence levels. We find that predatory protists are negatively associated with disease incidence, especially two ciliophoran Colpoda OTUs, and that bioorganic fertilization enhances the abundance of predatory protists. In glasshouse experiments we find that the predatory protist Colpoda influences disease incidence by directly consuming pathogens and indirectly increasing the presence of pathogen-suppressive microorganisms in the soil. Together, we demonstrate that predatory protists reduce bacterial wilt disease incidence in tomato plants via direct and indirect reductions of pathogens. Our study provides insights on the role that predatory protists play in plant disease, which could be used to design more sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract

The boron-10 based multi-grid detector is being developed as an alternative to helium-3 based neutron detectors. At the European Spallation Source, the detector will be used for time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy at cold to thermal neutron energies. The objective of this work is to investigate fine time- and energy-resolved effects of the Multi-Grid detector, down to a few µeV, while comparing it to the performance of a typical helium-3 tube. Furthermore, it is to characterize differences between the detector technologies in terms of internal scattering, as well as the time reconstruction of ∼ µs short neutron pulses. The data were taken at the Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin, where the Multi-Grid detector and a helium-3 tube were installed at the ESS test beamline, V20. Using a Fermi-chopper, the neutron beam of the reactor was chopped into a few tens of µs wide pulses before reaching the detector, located a few tens of cm downstream. The data of the measurements show an agreement between the derived and calculated neutron detection efficiency curve. The data also provide fine details on the effect of internal scattering, and how it can be reduced. For the first time, the chopper resolution was comparable to the timing resolution of the Multi-Grid detector. This allowed a detailed study of time- and energy resolved effects, as well as a comparison with a typical helium-3 tube.

Abstract

We report new measurements of the doubly-polarized photodisintegration of $^3$He at an incident photon energy of 16.5 MeV, carried out at the High Intensity $\gamma$-ray Source (HI$\gamma$S) facility located at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL). The spin-dependent double-differential cross sections and the contribution from the three--body channel to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) integrand were extracted and compared with the state-of-the-art three--body calculations. The calculations, which include the Coulomb interaction and are in good agreement with the results of previous measurements at 12.8 and 14.7 MeV, can no longer describe the cross section results at 16.5 MeV. The GDH integrand was found to be about one standard deviation larger than the maximum value predicted by the theories., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Despite being only one-atom thick, defect-free graphene is considered to be completely impermeable to all gases and liquids.sup.1-10. This conclusion is based on theory.sup.3-8 and supported by experiments.sup.1,9,10 that could not detect gas permeation through micrometre-size membranes within a detection limit of 10.sup.5 to 10.sup.6 atoms per second. Here, using small monocrystalline containers tightly sealed with graphene, we show that defect-free graphene is impermeable with an accuracy of eight to nine orders of magnitude higher than in the previous experiments. We are capable of discerning (but did not observe) permeation of just a few helium atoms per hour, and this detection limit is also valid for all other gases tested (neon, nitrogen, oxygen, argon, krypton and xenon), except for hydrogen. Hydrogen shows noticeable permeation, even though its molecule is larger than helium and should experience a higher energy barrier. This puzzling observation is attributed to a two-stage process that involves dissociation of molecular hydrogen at catalytically active graphene ripples, followed by adsorbed atoms flipping to the other side of the graphene sheet with a relatively low activation energy of about 1.0 electronvolt, a value close to that previously reported for proton transport.sup.11,12. Our work provides a key reference for the impermeability of two-dimensional materials and is important from a fundamental perspective and for their potential applications. 90. Probing Electronic Structures of Organic Semiconductors at Buried Interfaces by Electronic Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy

Abstract

We use Electronic Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy (ESFG) to study the electronic structures at a buried solid/solid interface for the first time. The system is an organic thin film, poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT), supported on a silicon surface. The ESFG measurement is only in resonance with electronic (or vibronic) excitations, thus capable of yielding rich information on the band gap and electronic structures of the P3HT film at interfaces. We find the bandgap of P3HT in contact with silicon is 2.2 eV, with a narrowed bandwidth and Lorentzian line shape. This is significantly distinct from the UV-vis spectra of bulk P3HT, which contains multiple broad Gaussian peaks. Our measurement demonstrates at interfaces regioregular P3HT has a uniform electronic structure, which could improve the short circuit currents. The unique capability of ESFG to probe electronic structures at buried interface under atmosphere will be useful for investigating many buried interfaces.

Abstract

For the first time, we have observed the obvious triple G peak splitting of ABA stacked trilayer graphene. The G peak splitting can be quantatively understood through the different electron-phonon coupling strength of Ea', Eb' and Ea" modes. In addition, the fluctuation of G peak position at different sample locations can also be understood from the view of the varied interaction strength among graphene layers of TLG, which is induced by nonuniform hole doping at the microscopic level.

Abstract

Recently, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), a promising visible-light-driven semiconductor material, has received enormous attention for photocatalytic water splitting, organic pollutant degradation, and CO2 reduction. However, the photocatalytic activity of bulk g-C3N4 is restricted due to the insufficient light adsorption, ineffective utilization of photogenerated charge carriers, and low specific surface area. Compared with bulk g-C3N4, the three-dimensional graphitic carbon nitride based materials (3D CNBMs) have outstanding physical and chemical characteristics, such as large specific area, plentiful active sites, and excellent electrical conductivity. This article reviews the latest achievements in 3D CNBMs, and presents the state-of-the-art advances in the synthetic methods of 3D CNBMs. Meanwhile, various applications of 3D CNBMs in photocatalysis, photo-electrochemistry, and electrochemistry are systematically reviewed and discussed. In addition, possible improvements and perspectives of 3D CNBMs are proposed. This review aims to summarize a panorama of the up-to-date processes of 3D CNBMs in environmental and energy applications and provide some innovative thoughts to accelerate the ground-breaking research and development of 3D CNBMs for a sustainable future.
