Abstract

The POLAR detector is a space based Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) polarimeter sensitive in the 15-500 keV energy range. Apart from its main scientific goal as a Gamma-Ray Burst polarimeter it is also able to detect photons from pulsars in orbit. By using the six-months in-orbit observation data, significant pulsation from the PSR B0531+21 (Crab pulsar) was obtained. In this work, we present the precise timing analysis of the Crab pulsar, together with a phase-resolved spectroscopic study using a joint-fitting method adapted for wide field of view instruments like POLAR. By using single power law fitting over the pulsed phase, we obtained spectral indices ranging from 1.718 to 2.315, and confirmed the spectral evolution in a reverse S shape which is homogenous with results from other missions over broadband. We will also show, based on the POLAR in-orbit performance and Geant4 Monte-Carlo simulation, the inferred capabilities of POLAR-2, the proposed follow-up mission of POLAR on board the China Space Station (CSS), for pulsars studies., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in Journal of High Energy Astrophysics

Abstract

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts are the strongest explosions in the Universe since the Big Bang, believed to be produced either in forming black holes at the end of massive star evolution or merging of compact objects. Spectral and timing properties of gamma-ray bursts suggest that the observed bright gamma-rays are produced in the most relativistic jets in the Universe; however, the physical properties, especially the structure and magnetic topologies in the jets are still not well known, despite several decades of studies. It is widely believed that precise measurements of the polarization properties of gamma-ray bursts should provide crucial information on the highly relativistic jets. As a result there have been many reports of gamma-ray burst polarization measurements with diverse results, see, however many such measurements suffered from substantial uncertainties, mostly systematic. After the first successful measurements by the GAP and COSI instruments, here we report a statistically meaningful sample of precise polarization measurements, obtained with the dedicated gamma-ray burst polarimeter, POLAR onboard China's Tiangong-2 spacelab. Our results suggest that the gamma-ray emission is at most polarized at a level lower than some popular models have predicted; although our results also show intrapulse evolution of the polarization angle. This indicates that the low polarization degrees could be due to an evolving polarization angle during a gamma-ray burst., Comment: 34 pages, 15 figures (16 pages and 3 figures without supplementary information). Abstract

POLAR is a compact space-borne detector initially designed to measure the polarization of hard X-rays emitted from Gamma-Ray Bursts in the energy range 50-500keV. This instrument was launched successfully onboard the Chinese space laboratory Tiangong-2 (TG-2) on 2016 September 15. After being switched on a few days later, tens of gigabytes of raw detection data were produced in-orbit by POLAR and transferred to the ground every day. Before the launch date, a full pipeline and related software were designed and developed for the purpose of quickly pre-processing all the raw data from POLAR, which include both science data and engineering data, then to generate the high level scientific data products that are suitable for later science analysis. This pipeline has been successfully applied for use by the POLAR Science Data Center in the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) after POLAR was launched and switched on. Abstract

The Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM) , composed of two small satellites, is a new mission to monitor the Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) coincident with Gravitational Wave (GW) events with a FOV of 100% all-sky.Each GECAM satellite detects and localizes GRBs using 25 compact and novel Gamma-Ray Detectors (GRDs) in 6 keV-5 MeV. Each GRD module is comprised of LaBr3:Ce scintillator, SiPM array and preamplifier. A large dynamic range of GRD is achieved by the high gain and low gain channels of the preamplifier. The energy response of GRD prototype was evaluated using radioactive sources in the range of 5.9-1332.5 keV. A energy resolution of 5.3% at 662 keV was determined from the 137Cs pulse height spectra, which meets the GECAM requirement (< 8% at 662 keV). Energy to channel conversion was evaluated and a nonlinearity correction was performed to reduce the residuals (< 1.5%). Also, a Geant4-based simulated in-flight background and a measured GRD LaBr3:Ce intrinsic activity were used to evaluate the capability of in-flight calibration. Abstract

By using the \textit{Fermi}/GBM data of the X-ray bursts (XRBs) of SGR J1935+2154, we investigate the temporal clustering of the bursts and the cumulative distribution of the waiting time and fluence/flux. It is found that the bursts occurring in the episode hosting FRB 20200428 have obviously shorter waiting times than those in the other episodes. The general statistical properties of the XRBs further indicate they could belong to a self-organized critical (SOC) system (e.g., starquakes), making them very similar to the earthquake phenomena. Then, according to a unified scaling law between the waiting time and energy of the earthquakes as well as their aftershocks, we implement an analogy analysis on the XRBs and find that the FRB episode owns more dependent burst events than the other episodes. It is indicated that the FRB emission could be produced by the interaction between different burst events, which could correspond to a collision between different seismic/Alfven waves or different explosion outflows. Abstract

The milestone discovery of GW170817-GRB 170817A-AT 2017gfo has shown that gravitational waves (GWs) could be produced during the merger of a neutron star–neutron star/black hole and that in electromagnetic (EM) waves, a gamma-ray burst (GRB) and a kilonova (KN) are generated in sequence after the merger. Observationally, however, EM properties before the merger phase are still unclear. Here we report a peculiar precursor in a KN-associated long-duration GRB 211211A, providing evidence of the EM before the merger. This precursor lasts ∼0.2 s, and the waiting time between the precursor and the main burst is ∼1 s, comparable to that between GW170817 and GRB 170817A. The spectrum of the precursor could be well fit with a nonthermal cutoff power-law model instead of a blackbody. In particular, a ∼22 Hz quasiperiodic oscillation candidate (∼3 σ) is detected in the precursor. These temporal and spectral properties indicate that this precursor is probably produced by a catastrophic flare accompanied with magnetoelastic or crustal oscillations of a magnetar in a binary compact merger. The strong magnetic field of the magnetar can also account for the prolonged duration of GRB 211211A. However, it poses a challenge to reconcile the rather short lifetime of a magnetar with the rather long spiraling time of a binary neutron star system only by the GW radiation before the merger. Abstract

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) is a broad band X-ray astronomical satellite from 1 to 250 keV. Understanding the X-ray background in detail will help to achieve a good performance of the instrument. In this work, we make use of the mass modelling technique to estimate the background of High Energy Telescope (HE) aboard HXMT. It consists of three steps. First, we built a complete geometric model of HXMT. Then based on the investigation about the space environment concerning HXMT low-earth orbit, in our simulation we considered cosmic rays, cosmic X-ray background (CXB), South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) trapped particles, the albedo gamma and neutrons from interaction of cosmic rays with the Earth's atmosphere. Finally, the Shielding Physics List supplied by Geant4 collaborations was adopted. According to our simulation, (1) the total background of HXMT/HE is about 540 count/s on average over 20-250 keV energy band after 100 days in orbit; (2) the delayed component caused by cosmic rays and SAA trapped particles dominates the full energy band of HXMT/HE; (3) some emission lines are prominent in the background continuum spectrum and will be used for in-orbit calibration; (4) the estimated sensitivity is approximately 0.1 mCrab at 50 keV with an exposure of $10^{6}$ s.

Abstract

The Doppler dipole signal dominates the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy maps obtained by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) mission, and plays a key role throughout the data processing. Previously, we discovered a timing asynchronism of -25.6ms between the timestamps of the spacecraft attitude and radiometer output in the original raw WMAP time-ordered data (TOD), which, if not corrected in following data processing, would generate an artificial quadrupole component (l=2) in recovered CMB maps (Liu, Xiong & Li 2010). Recently, Roukema (2010b) proves that there does exist a timing-offset-induced error corresponding to about -25.6ms in the WMAP calibrated TOD by studying the fluctuation variance per pixel in the temperature map recovered from the TOD as a function of assumed timing-offset. Here, we find evidence directly in the WMAP TOD for such an uncorrected timing error, possibly occurred in calculating the Doppler dipole signal during the WMAP team's TOD data processing. The amplitude is highly significant and is consistent with previous work. Abstract

The cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) are of great importance for cosmology. In previous work we had developed a pipeline for map-making independently of the WMAP team. The new maps produced from the WMAP raw data by our pipeline are notably different to the official ones, and the power spectrum as well as the best-fit cosmological parameters are significantly different too. What's more, by revealing the inconsistency between the WMAP raw data and their official map, we had pointed out that there must exist an unexpected problem in the WMAP team's pipeline. In this work, we find that the trouble comes from the inaccuracy of antenna pointing direction caused by a systematical time drift between the attitude data and the science data in the WMAP raw time-order data (TOD). The CMB quadrupole in the WMAP release can be exactly generated from a differential dipole field which is completely determined by the spacecraft velocity and the antenna directions without using any CMB signal. After correcting the WMAP team's error, the CMB quadrupole component disappears. Therefore, the released WMAP CMB quadrupole is almost completely artificial and the real quadrupole of the CMB anisotropy should be near zero. Abstract

A remarkable similarity between the large-scale non-Gaussian pattern of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperatures obtained by Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) mission and the distribution feature of observation numbers is noted. Motivated from such a similarity, in this work we check the WMAP data for the correlation between pixel temperature t and observation number N. Systematic effect of imbalance differential observation and significant t-N correlation in magnitude, distribution non-Gaussianity and north-south asymmetry are found. Abstract

The study of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and power density spectra (PDSs) continuum properties can help shed light on the still elusive emission physics of magnetars and as a window into the interiors of neutron stars using asteroseismology. In this work, we employ a PDS method to search for the QPOs in the hundreds of X-ray bursts from SGR J1935+2154 observed by Insight - HXMT, GECAM , and Fermi/ GBM from 2014 July to 2022 January. Although no definitive QPO signal (significance >3 σ) is detected in individual bursts or the averaged periodogram of the bursts grouped by duration, we identify several bursts exhibiting features at ∼40 Hz, attributed to the the proximity intervals between adjacent pulses and consistent with that reported in the X-ray burst associated with FRB 200428. We investigate the PDS continuum properties and find that the distribution of the PDS slope in the simple power-law model peaks at ∼2.5, which is consistent with other magnetars but higher than 5/3 commonly seen in gamma-ray bursts. Besides, the distribution of the break frequency in the broken power-law model peaks at ∼60 Hz. Finally, we report that the power-law index of PDS has an anti-correlation and power-law dependence on the burst duration as well as the minimum variation time-scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

81. The 2021 X-ray outburst of magnetar SGR J1935+2154 -- I. Spectral properties

Abstract

Over a period of multiple active episodes between January 2021 and January 2022, the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 emitted a total of 82 bursts observed by GECAM-B. Temporal and spectral analyses reveal that the bursts have an average duration of $\sim$145 ms and a fluence ranging from $1.2 \times 10^{-8} \ \mathrm{erg \cdot cm^{-2}}$ to $3.7 \times 10^{-5} \ \mathrm{erg \cdot cm^{-2}}$ (30 - 200 keV). The spectral properties of these bursts are similar to those of earlier active episodes. Specifically, we find that the emission area of the Double Black Body (BB2) model shows a Log-Linear correlation to its temperature, and there is a weak relation between fluence and $E_{\mathrm{peak}}$ (or $\alpha$) in the Cut-Off Power Law (CPL) model. However, we note that the temperature distributions of BB2/BB models in GECAM-B samples are different from those in GBM-GECAM samples, due to differences in the energy range used for fitting. To understand this difference, we propose a Multi-Temperature Black Body (MBB) model, assuming that the BB temperatures follow a power law distribution. Our analysis shows that the minimum temperature $kT_{\mathrm{min}} \sim 5$ keV of the MBB model, which is consistent between GECAM-B and GBM-GECAM. This indicates that both samples originated from similar magnetar bursts. We also reveal the spectra of magnetar bursts tend to be soft. It indicates that magnetar bursts may be composed of multiple low BB temperatures and the majority of the BB temperatures are concentrated around the minimum temperature.

Abstract

As the main detector of the Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor mission (GECAM), the calibration of the energy response and detection efficiency of the gamma-ray detector (GRD) is the main content of the ground-based calibration. This article mainly focuses on the calibration of the energy response and detection efficiency in the 8–160 keV with a refined measurement around the absorption edges of the lanthanum bromide crystal (⁠|$\rm {LaBr_3}$|⁠). The GRD performances for different crystal types, data acquisition modes, working modes, and incident positions are also analysed in detail. We show that the calibration campaign is comprehensive, the detector performance meets the flight requirements, and the calibration results generally agree with simulations as expected. Abstract

The milestone of GW 170817-GRB 170817A-AT 2017gfo has shown that gravitational wave (GW) is produced during the merger of neutron star-neutron star/black hole and that in electromagnetic (EM) wave a gamma-ray burst (GRB) and a kilonovae (KN) are generated in sequence after the merger. Observationally, however, EM property during a merger is still unclear. Here we report a peculiar precursor in a KN-associated long GRB 211211A. The duration of the precursor is $\sim$ 0.2 s, and the waiting time between the precursor and the main emission (ME) of the burst is $\sim$ 1 s, which is about the same as the time interval between GW 170817 and GRB 170817A. Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPO) with frequency $\sim$22 Hz (at $>5\sigma$ significance) are found throughout the precursor, the first detection of periodic signals from any {\it bona fide} GRBs. This indicates most likely that a magnetar participated in the merger, and the precursor might be produced due to a catastrophic flare accompanying with torsional or crustal oscillations of the magnetar. The strong seed magnetic field of $\sim 10^{14-15}$ G at the surface of the magnetar may also account for the prolonged duration of GRB 211211A. However, it is a challenge to reconcile the rather short lifetime of a magnetar \cite{kaspi2017magnetars} with the rather long spiraling time of a binary neutron star system only by gravitational wave radiation before merger., Comment: 37 pages, 14 figures
