An on-line approach for diagnosing high-resistance connection (HRC) faults in five-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives is presented in this paper. The development of this approach is based on a so-called magnetic field pendulous oscillation (MFPO) technique and symmetrical components method. Under HRC fault condition, a 'swing-like MFPO phenomenon is observed compared to the healthy condition. Furthermore, with the extracted current features in symmetrical components domain, different HRC fault types are successfully identified and distinguished. These fault types include (i) single-phase faults, e.g., HRC fault in phase-A, (ii) two-phase non-adjacent faults, e.g., HRC fault in phase-A&C, and (iii) two-phase adjacent faults, e.g., HRC fault in phase-A&B. Meanwhile, the localization of the faulty phase/phases is also accomplished, and the fault severity is estimated. In this approach, only sensing of the phase currents is needed. Hence, the implementation cost is very low, since the sensory data of the currents are typically already available in the closed-loop vector-controlled drives for control purpose and no additional sensors or related signal conditioning circuits are required. The effectiveness of the presented diagnostic approach is verified by simulations and experimental results. To evaluate the changes in testicular stiffness and microcirculation caused by spermatic vein ligation in patients with varicocele, we conducted a case-controlled study. A total of 27 grade III left varicocele cases were enrolled. Testicular stiffness and perfusion were evaluated by shear wave elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound during subinguinal microscopic varicocelectomy. The external and the internal parenchyma of bilateral testes were selected to compare the shear wave velocity of bilateral testes during the spermatic vein ligation. We mapped and compared the intensity-time curves following bolus contrast injection three times in the same region of interest. Initially, the shear wave velocity of the left internal parenchyma was higher than the right side (1.10 ± 0.06 m/s vs. 1.00 ± 0.03 m/s). It decreased (1.09 ± 0.06 m/s) (p 0.05) after ligation. Meanwhile, the left epididymis had the higher agent peak intensity (0.90 × 10E-5 AU), the largest area under the curve (80.20 × 10E-5 AU s), and the longest washout area (54.35 × 10E-5 AU s). In addition, the left internal parenchyma presented a sharper slope (0.18 × 10E-5 AU/s) (p 0.05). In conclusion, the spermatic vein ligation improved the perfusion of the internal testicular parenchyma, but it could temporally deteriorate the stasis of the epididymis. These changes caused softer testicular parenchyma.

Immune cells, including neutrophils, natural killer (NK) cells, T cells, NKT cells and macrophages, participate in the progression of acute liver injury and hepatic recovery. To date, there has been no systematic study on the quantitative changes in these different immune cells from initial injury to subsequent recovery.To investigate the infiltration changes of various immune cells in acute liver injury models over time, and to study the relationship between the changes in leukocyte cell-derived chemotaxin 2 (LECT2) and the infiltration of several immune cells.Carbon tetrachloride- and concanavalin A-induced acute liver injury models were employed to mimic toxin-induced and autoimmune-mediated liver injury respectively. The quantitative changes in various immune cells were monitored at different time points. Serum samples were collected, and liver tissues were harvested. Ly6G, CD161, CD4, CD8 and F4/80 staining were used to indicate neutrophils, NK/NKT cells, CD4During the injury and repair process, different types of immune cells began to increase, reached their peaks and fell into decline at different time points. Furthermore, when the serum alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) indices reverted to normal levels 7 d after the injury, the infiltration of immune cells still existed even 14 d after the injury, showing an obvious lag effect. We found that the expression of LECT2 was upregulated in acute liver injury mouse models, and the liver injuries of Lect2-KO mice were less severe than those of wild-type mice. Compared with wild-type mice, Lect2-KO mice had different immune cell infiltration.The recovery time of immune cells was far behind that of serum ALT and AST during the process of liver repair. LECT2 could regulate monocyte/macrophage chemotaxis and might be used as a therapeutic target for acute liver injury.

Selenate enhances arsenic (As) accumulation in As-hyperaccumulator

BACKGROUND: This study introduces the results of laparoscopic radical cystectomy with modified intracorporeal ileal conduit (mICIC), which was accompanied by enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols. METHODS: From March 2014 to June 2020, 48 patients underwent mICIC. Patients were divided into ERAS (n=17) and non-ERAS groups (n=31). Baseline and perioperative variables were analyzed. The primary outcome was 90-day complications. Secondary outcomes were operative time, length of stay, two-year overall survival, cancer-specific survival, and disease-free survival. RESULTS: Forty-eight patients underwent intracorporeal ileal conduit with no transition to open surgery. Twenty-five patients (52.1%) experienced at least one complication, including 22 minor cases (45.8%) and three major cases (6.2%). The median operative time, urinary diversion time, estimated blood loss, and length of stay were 320 min, 135 min, 200 mL, and 10.5 days, respectively. The median time to flatus and normal diet were two days and three days, respectively. The chloroplast is a type of subcellular organelle of green plants and eukaryotic algae, which plays an important role in the photosynthesis process. Since the function of a protein correlates with its location, knowing its subchloroplast localization is helpful for elucidating its functions. However, due to a large number of chloroplast proteins, it is costly and time-consuming to design biological experiments to recognize subchloroplast localizations of these proteins. To address this problem, during the past ten years, twelve computational prediction methods have been developed to predict protein subchloroplast localization. This review summarizes the research progress in this area. We hope the review could provide important guide for further computational study on protein subchloroplast localization.

Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) are chemical analogs, but their behaviors in plants are different. To investigate the Sb uptake, translocation and speciation in As-hyperaccumulator P. cretica, a hydroponic experiment was conducted. In this study, P. cretica was exposed to 0.2-strength Hoagland nutrient solution, which contained 0.5 or 5 mg/L antimonite (SbIII) or antimonate (SbV). After 14 d exposure, P. cretica took up 1.4-2.8 times more SbIII than SbV. Since P. cretica was unable to translocate Sb, its roots accumulated97% Sb with the highest at 7965 mg/kg. In both SbIII and SbV treatments, SbIII was the predominant species in P. cretica, with 90-100% and 46-100% SbIII in the roots. As the first barrier against Sb to enter plant cells, more Sb was accumulated in cell wall than cytosol or organelles. The results suggest that P. cretica may detoxify Sb by reducing SbV to SbIII and immobilizing it in root cell walls. Besides, the presence of SbIII significantly reduced the concentrations of dissolved organic C including organic acids in P. cretica root exudates. Further, increasing Sb levels promoted P accumulation in the plant, especially in the fronds, which may help P. cretica growth. The information from this study shed light on metabolic transformation of Sb in As-hyperaccumulators P. cretica, which helps to better understand Sb uptake and detoxification by plants.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) can cause the terrible tuberculosis (TB), which is reported as one of the most dreadful epidemics. Although many biochemical molecular drugs have been developed to cope with this disease, the drug resistance—especially the multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistance (XDR)—poses a huge threat to the treatment. However, traditional biochemical experimental method to tackle TB is time-consuming and costly. Benefited by the appearance of the enormous genomic and proteomic sequence data, TB can be treated via sequence-based biological computational approach-bioinformatics. Studies on predicting subcellular localization of mycobacterial protein (MBP) with high precision and efficiency may help figure out the biological function of these proteins and then provide useful insights for protein function annotation as well as drug design. In this review, we reported the progress that has been made in computational prediction of subcellular localization of MBP including the following aspects: 1) Construction of benchmark datasets. 2) Methods of feature extraction. 3) Techniques of feature selection. 4) Application of several published prediction algorithms. 5) The published results. 6) The further study on prediction of subcellular localization of MBP.

Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has become the standard treatment for many diseases, but it is an intense and distinctive experience for patients. HSCT-related mortality is present throughout the whole process of transplantation, from pretransplantation to recovery. Long-term rehabilitation and the uncertain risk of death evoke feelings of vulnerability, helplessness, and intense fear. Zimmermann et al. proposed that spiritual well-being is an important dimension of quality of life and that patients at the end stage of life require spiritual support in addition to physical care, psychological care, and social support. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to examine the role of spirituality in the process of HSCT. A systematic mixed studies review (SMSR) was based on Pluye and Hong’s framework to understand the role of spirituality in patients’ experiences while undergoing HSCT. We use the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement to report the results of integration. Fifteen original qualitative studies, 19 quantitative studies, and one mixed method study were included in the systematic mixed studies review. The evidence from the review revealed the following three themes: the spiritual experiences of HSCT patients, the spiritual coping styles of HSCT patients, and the spiritual need changes brought about by HSCT. Few medical institutions currently offer spiritual healing, although HSCT patients with different cultural backgrounds may have different spiritual experiences and spiritual coping styles. Psychotherapists or nurses should be considered to provide spiritual care for patients undergoing HSCT, to help patients cope with disease pressures, promote HSCT patients’ comfort, and improve their quality of life.

Selenium (Se) is a necessary micronutrient for humans, and its supplementation from crop grains is important to address the ubiquitous Se deficiency in people worldwide. Se uptake by crops largely depend on soil bioavailable Se rather than soil total Se content, which provides possibilities to explore the Se-rich crops in Se-poor area. In this study, a two-step functionalizing strategy by combining co-condensation with grafting procedures was employed to synthesize well-ordered Amino- and Thiol-Bifunctionalized SBA-15 (ATBS) mesoporous silica. Its physicochemical properties, performance, and mechanisms in immobilization of toxic metals Pb and Cd in water and soil were investigated. After bi-functionalization, X-ray diffractometer, transmission electron microscope, and N2 adsorption-desorption measurements confirmed that the ATBS maintained a highly-ordered mesoporous structure, large surface area and pore volume. The elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) evidenced the successful incorporation of amine and thiol groups into ATBS. These structure and functional characteristics of ATBS benefited Pb and Cd sorption. Sorption isotherms of Pb and Cd were better fit with Sips and Redlich-Peterson models. Sorption kinetics suggested that Pb sorption was mainly regulated by chemical reactions, whereas both diffusion process and chemical reactions were rate-regulating steps in Cd sorption. ATBS showed the maximum sorption capacities for Pb and Cd at 120 and 38 mg g-1, respectively. The sorption mechanisms revealed by XPS measurements suggested that Cd sorption was mainly attributed to thiol groups while Pb was efficiently bond to both thiol and amino groups. High and stable sorption efficiencies were attained in the pH range of 4-6, with a higher affinity towards Pb than Cd. Furthermore, its ability to immobilize Pb and Cd in soils was examined with an incubation experiment, which showed that ATBS reduced 30-56% of MgCl2-extractable Pb and Cd in a contaminated soil. The synthesized sorbent via the two-step functionalizing strategy shows high sorption efficiency towards Pb and Cd, and thus it has potential application in remediating Pb and Cd contaminated water and soils.

The beneficial effects of selenium on As uptake and plant growth in As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata are known, but the associated mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of selenate on arsenic accumulation by P. vittata under two arsenate levels. P. vittata plants were exposed to 13 (As13) or 133 µM (As133) arsenate and 5 µM selenate in 0.2-strength Hoagland solution. After 14 d of growth, plant biomass, Se and As content, As speciation, and malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and glutathione (GSH and GSSG) levels were determined. The results show that selenate promoted P. vittata growth and increased As concentrations in the roots and fronds by 256% from 97 to 346 mg kg−1 and 142% from 213 to 514 mg kg−1 under As13 treatment, and by 166% from 500 to 1332 mg kg−1 and 534% from 777 to 4928 mg kg−1 under As133 treatment. In addition, selenate increased the glutathione content in P. vittata roots and fronds by 75–86% under As13 treatment and 44–45% under As133 treatment. Selenate also increased the GPX activity by 161–173%, and GR activity by 72–79% in P. vittata under As13 and As133 treatments. The HPLC-ICP-MS analysis indicated that selenate increased both AsIII and AsV levels in P. vittata, with AsIII/AsV ratio being lower in the roots and higher in the fronds, i.e., more AsIII was being translocated to the fronds. Taken together, our results suggest that, via GPX-GR mediated enhancement of GSH-GSSG cycle, selenate effectively increases plant growth and As uptake in P. vittata by improving AsV reduction in the roots and AsIII translocation from the roots to the fronds.

Post-translational modification (PTM) refers to the covalent and enzymatic modification of proteins after protein biosynthesis, which orchestrates a variety of biological processes. Detecting PTM sites in proteome scale is one of the key steps to in-depth understanding their regulation mechanisms. In this study, we presented an integrated method based on eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), called iRice-MS, to identify 2-hydroxyisobutyrylation, crotonylation, malonylation, ubiquitination, succinylation and acetylation in rice. For each PTM-specific model, we adopted eight feature encoding schemes, including sequence-based features, physicochemical property-based features and spatial mapping information-based features. The optimal feature set was identified from each encoding, and their respective models were established. Extensive experimental results show that iRice-MS always display excellent performance on 5-fold cross-validation and independent dataset test. In addition, our novel approach provides the superiority to other existing tools in terms of AUC value. Based on the proposed model, a web server named iRice-MS was established and is freely accessible at http://lin-group.cn/server/iRice-MS.

Bioaccessibility of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) from unintentional ingestion of soil is increasingly assessed with in vitro gastrointestinal models incorporating a sorption sink. In this study, the bioaccessibility of DDTs in contaminated soils (n = 11) was determined using "unfed" unified bioaccessibility method (UBM) and fed organic estimation human simulation test (FOREhST) with/without Tenax as an absorbent. By adding Tenax, the bioaccessibility of DDTs determined using UBM was significantly increased from 4.9-30.6% to 31.6-86.0%. In contrast, the bioaccessibility of DDTs determined using FOREhST without/with Tenax were similar with values of 20.0-60.9% vs 31.5-47.6%, implying that the influence of food components on the absorption efficiency of the sink should not be overlooked. Much high fraction of DDTs (bioaccessibility: 11.7-24.8%) remained in FOREhST supernatant after Tenax collection, suggesting that prediction of bioavailability through bioaccessibility obtained by absorbent needs to be treated with caution when bioaccessibility is determined using a "fed state" in vitro method.

Understanding the distribution of hyperaccumulators helps to implement more efficient phytoremediation strategies of contaminated sites, however, limited information is available. Here, we investigated the geographical distribution of the first-known arsenic-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata in China and the key factors under two climate change scenarios (SSP 1-2.6 and SSP 5-8.5) at two time points (2030 and 2070). Species distribution model (MaxEnt) was applied to examine P. vittata distribution based on 399 samples from field surveys and existing specimen records. Further, among 23 environmental factors, 11 variables were used in the MaxEnt model, including temperature, precipitation, elevation, soil property, and UV-B radiation. The results show that P. vittata can grow in ~23% of the regions in China. Specifically, it is mainly distributed in 11 provinces of southern China, including Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu. Besides, eastern Sichuan, and southern Henan, Shaanxi, and Anhui are suitable for P. vittata growth. Under two climate change scenarios, P. vittata distribution in China would decrease by ~5.76-7.46 × 104 km2 in 2030 and ~3.22-4.68 × 104 km2 in 2070, with southern Henan and most Jiangsu being unsuitable for P. vittata growth. Among the 11 environmental variables, the minimum temperature of coldest month (bio6) and temperature annual range (bio7) are the two key factors limiting P. vittata distribution. At bio6 33 °C, the regions are unsuitable for P. vittata growth. Based on the MaxEnt model, precipitation had limited effects, so P. vittata can probably survive under both dry and moist environments. This study helps guide phytoremediation of As-polluted soils using P. vittata and provides an example to evaluate habitat suitability of hyperaccumulators at international scales.

Lots of cold-adapted organisms could produce antifreeze proteins (AFPs) to counter the freezing of cell fluids by controlling the growth of ice crystal. AFPs have been found in various species such as in vertebrates, invertebrates, plants, bacteria, and fungi. These AFPs from fish, insects and plants displayed a high diversity. Thus, the identification of the AFPs is a challenging task in computational proteomics. With the accumulation of AFPs and development of machine meaning methods, it is possible to construct a high-throughput tool to timely identify the AFPs. In this review, we briefly reviewed the application of machine learning methods in antifreeze proteins identification from difference section, including published benchmark dataset, sequence descriptor, classification algorithms and published methods. We hope that this review will produce new ideas and directions for the researches in identifying antifreeze proteins.

Because of the large earth pressure and high inner water pressure, high-stiffness segmental joints with ductile-iron joint panels (DIJPs) are needed to improve the bearing capacity of segmental joints for deep-buried drainage shield tunnels. DIJPs are always mounted in high-stiffness segmental joints to restrain deformation and reduce the joint rotation angle, thus improving the bearing capacity of segmental joints. Full-scale tensile experiments on the performance of DIJPs with different structural styles, in terms of deformation characteristic, anchorage property, and failure mode, were carried out to evaluate the applicability of DIJPs for deep-buried drainage shield tunnels. The test results show that bending deflection appears in DIJPs if the flexural rigidity of DIJPs is insufficient, which will cause bending-tensile failure for the DIJP anchor bars. The failure position is in the weak interface: the screw thread position of the anchor bars, which is the connection position between the anchor bars and DIJPs; connecting the anchor bars with the main reinforcing bars by stirrups or filling the hand hole can restrain the bending deflection of the DIJP and improve the bearing capacity of the anchor bars. When the anchor bars are connected with the main reinforcing bars, the deformation of the DIJP decreases by 5.6%, and the bearing capacity of the anchor bars increases by 31.1%; further, if the hand hole are filled with cement, the deformation of the DIJP decreases by 22.2% and the bearing capacity of the anchor bars increases by 34.1%. Considering the failure modes of the specimens, it is believed that increasing the flexural rigidity of the DIJP and improving the connection performance between the DIJP and anchor bars can improve the behavior of the DIJP and anchor bars.

This study estimated the prevalence, correlates, severity and functional impairment of disabilities attributed to neurotic disorders in the Chinese population. Data from a representative national sample of 2,526,145 non-institutionalized residents were obtained from the Second China National Sample Survey on Disabilities (CNSSD) in 2006. The data were analyzed to estimate prevalence, correlates, severity and functional impairment of disability attributable to neurotic disorders by gender, age, region, and other key socio-demographic and economic factors. The disability prevalence attributed to neurotic disorders was 0.032% (805/2,526,145) in China. Women, rural residents, unemployed job status, low education level and those who were divorced or widowed showed higher prevalence rates than their counterparts. Proportions of mild, moderate, severe and extremely severe of neurotic attributed disability only accounted for 78.48%, 9.14%, 6.5% and 5.9%, respectively. Finally, these findings provide evidence that, prevalence rates of disability attributable to neurotic disorders vary greatly among different population groups and regions. Multiple disabilities including disability attributable to neurotic disorders can bring much more impairment to individuals than disability attributable to neurotic disorder only.

Most prevailing processes are incapable of removing Cr(III)-organic complexes efficiently and facing the problem of in-process formation of highly toxic Cr(VI) based on oxidation. The efficient decomplexation of Cr(III) complexes and simultaneous abatement of Cr with low Cr(VI) accumulation would be desirable in treatment of Cr(III)-complexed wastewater. Here, we found efficient degradation of Cr(III)-EDTA and simultaneous removal of Cr by forming Cr2O3 precipitate from simulated solution as well as an electroplating effluent under UV irradiation. The results showed a complete degradation of Cr(III)-EDTA after reaction time of 60 min and 70–80% of TOC mineralization within 180 min as well. About 90% of Cr(III) precipitated as Cr2O3 simultaneously, with the residual total Cr below 1.5 mg/L. The degradation of Cr(III)-EDTA was a stepwise de-acetate group process, as proven by the obvious attenuation of peaks related to carboxyl groups and C–C bond from FT-IR spectra of Cr(III)-EDTA and significant mineralization of TOC after UV irradiation. Based on negligible accumulation of Cr(VI) (less than 0.1 mg/L) under N2-sparged condition, the C-centered radicals from the β-fragmentation of O-centered radicals formed by photo-induced ligand-to-metal charge transfer were responsible for the in situ reduction of intermediate Cr(VI), resulting in the low accumulation of Cr(VI). The addition of 20 mg/L Fe2+ was capable of removing the remaining Cr(VI) and total Cr, with Cr(VI) and total Cr less than 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L, respectively. Moreover, the photo-oxidation process combined with Fe2+ addition were efficient in removing other Cr(III) complexes, such as Cr(III)-citrate and those from a realistic electroplating effluent. We believe that this study would provide an alternative option for efficient degradation of Cr(III) complexes and simultaneous abatement of Cr from contaminated water.
