The “Calendar Painting” in the period of the Republic of China was a medium of commercial advertising, which was initially a calendar picture for products promotion. The typical images of beautiful women dressed in cheongsams depicted in the calendar paintings became the significant feature of commercial advertising at that time. Cheongsam, as a most important representative of garment for women in the period of the Republic of China, was accompanied by the changes of times of the Republic of China with its production, transformation and development. Based on the studies of calendar advertising paintings during the time of old Shanghai, this paper elaborates such as innovation of cheongsam dress style and pattern design. In the meantime, the characteristics of cheongsam design at that time, the breakthrough on traditional aesthetics for urban women and the effects to contemporary costume design from cheongsam with Shanghai style are also researched in this paper.

Serum albumin (ALB) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) were also collected. Survival curves were obtained with the Kaplan–Meier method, and the differences between groups in survival were tested by the log-rank test.Results: The median age was 59 years (range, 40–80 years). Fourteen patients underwent mutational analysis of EGFR; of these, 12 had wild-type EGFR and the remaining two had EGFR mutations in exons. The median disease-free survival (DFS) of pulmonary LCNEC was 49.3 months and that of overall survival (OS) was not reached. DFS and OS were shorter for patients with decreased serum ALB than for patients with normal serum ALB (P=0.003 and P=0.004, respectively). Meanwhile, a high level of NSE was also significantly associated with short DFS and OS (P=0.005 and P=0.000, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that decrease in serum ALB was an independent prognostic factor for OS (P=0.046).Conclusion: The frequency of EGFR mutation in LCNEC patients is low. Background: BRCA1-associated protein-1 (BAP1) has been investigated the prognostic value for some carcinomas, including mammary carcinoma, pulmonary carcinoma and mesothelioma and so on. However, the status of BAP1 expression and the relationship of that with overall survival were not still estimated in patients with gliomas. Therefore, it was necessary to investigate the effect of BAP1 expression for the survival of patients with gliomas in this study. Patients and methods: Clinicopathological information of 229 patients with gliomas was used to perform the further analysis. We defined the nucleus expression of BAP1 score of median 0 and cytoplasmic expression of BAP1 score of median 100 as the rational cutoff value for survival analysis, respectively. These patients were categorized into the low cytoplasmic expression of BAP1 and the high expression of BAP1 group, presence of nucleus expression and absence of nucleus expression according to the corresponding cutoff point, respectively. The associations of clinicopathological characteristics with overall survival (OS) were investigated by univariate analysis in patients with gliomas. Multivariate analysis was further performed to find the independent prognostic indicator of OS by Cox regression model. Results: Thirty-nine of 229 patients (17.0%) with gliomas had the nucleus expression of BAP1, 213 of 229 patients (93.0%) had the cytoplasmic expression of BAP1, and 28 patients (12.2%) with both cytoplasmic and nucleus expression, 5 cases (2.2%) without neither cytoplasmic nor nucleus expression. Objectives Sorafenib is a first multi-kinase inhibitor and one of the most widely used small-molecule oral-targeted drugs. It has been widely used for the treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma and hepatocellular carcinoma. However, some common adverse effects of sorafenib may impact quality of life. In this study, we evaluated the inhibitory effect on the growth of hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2) and suppression on angiogenesis of 1118-20, a newly synthesized indazole diarylurea compound. Methods We evaluated the activity of 1118-20 against HepG2 cells growth and tumour angiogenesis of human umbilical vascular endothelial cell line (HUVECs) with sorafenib as a positive control. Key findings The cytotoxic efficacy of 1118-20 was higher in HepG2 cells than human normal liver cell line (HL-7702). 1118-20 significantly suppressed the proliferation of HepG2 cells by apoptosis induction via Bcl-2 family-mediated mitochondria pathway and inhibition on Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway. 1118-20 effectively blunt the motility and migration, and inhibited the formation of capillary tube of HUVECs through suppression of angiogenic factors expression. Moreover, the results indicated that 1118-20 exerted higher efficacy than sorafenib on tumour cell proliferation and angiogenesis. Conclusions Compared with its parent drug sorafenib, we found that 1118-20 possessed more potential on inhibition of angiogenesis and cancer cells growth. Inhibitory effect of 1118-20 on non-tumour liver cell HL-7702 was lower than that on hepatoma carcinoma cell HepG2. These results suggest that 1118-20 is a promising candidate compound that could be developed to a potent anticancer agent.

The prognostic significance of vascular invasion (VI) in nonmetastatic gastric cancer (GC) remains a matter of controversy. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of VI on survival in this group of GC patients. We enrolled 361 GC patients without metastasis who underwent curative gastrectomy between 1996 and 2009 in Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center. A retrospective analysis of the clinicopathological data was performed, focusing on the impact of VI detected by routine H&E staining on disease-free survival (DFS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). The presence of VI was detected in 13.9% of our cohort. The VI status was significantly correlated with the tumor size, infiltration depth, and TNM stage (P < 0.05). Patients with VI showed significantly lower DFS and CSS compared with patients without VI (P < 0.0001 for both). The subgroup analysis indicated that the presence of VI was a negative predictor of DFS in all TNM stages and a predictor of lower CSS only in stage I (P < 0.05 for all). A multivariate Cox proportional analysis identified VI as an independent predictor of CSS (P = 0.022). The presence of VI is a risk factor for recurrence and an independent predictor of poor survival in nonmetastatic GC after curative resection. The VI status should be considered to stratify with this group of GC patients for adjuvant treatment and more effective follow-up protocol.

Tyrosine-protein phosphatase nonreceptor type 12 (PTPN12) has been proposed to predict prognosis of various human cancers. However, the clinicopathologic and prognostic significance of PTPN12 expression in NPC has not yet been elucidated. The objective of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological and prognostic implication of PTPN12 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. Protein expression levels of PTPN12 were explored by semiquantitative immunohistochemical staining on archival formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded pathological specimens consisting of 203 NPCs, and 40 normal nasopharyngeal mucosa tissues. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was employed to determine the cutoff score of PTPN12 expression in NPCs. The PTPN12 immunohistochemical staining results were then correlated with various clinicopathological features and patients’ prognosis using various statistical models. Our results showed that decreased expression of PTPN12 was more frequently observed in NPC tissues compared with the normal nasopharyngeal mucosa. An Escherichia coli cadAp::luc-based whole-cell sensor was constructed to measure cadmium (Cd) bioavailability and assess the immobilizing efficiency of phosphate and silicate on Cd. In previous induction experiments, a linear response (R(2) = 0.97, P0.01) from 0.1 to 5 μmol L(-1) of Cd was detected by this sensor after a 2 h incubation. The sensor was then used to estimate Cd bioavailability in soils spiked with different amounts of dipotassium phosphate (DKP, K₂HPO₄) or sodium silicate (SS, Na₂SiO₃·9H₂O). The total Cd in soil-water extracts (TSWE) was determined with ICP-MS, and the bioavailable Cd in soil-water extracts (BSWE) and bioavailable Cd in soil-water suspensions (BSWS) were measured by the E. coli cadAp::luc-based whole-cell sensor. Final results showed that spiked SS (Si : Cd = 2 : 1, mol mol(-1)) reduced the different forms of Cd (TSWE, BSWE and BSWS) from 56.47 mg kg(-1), 42.11 mg kg(-1), and 206.72 mg kg(-1) to 16.63 mg kg(-1), 15.90 mg kg(-1), and 67.57 mg kg(-1), respectively. In other words, SS had 25.68%, 19.5%, and 9.54% better immobilizing efficiency, respectively, compared with DKP. All the results supported SS was more efficient than DKP at immobilizing Cd in soil, and higher soil pH and higher solubility of the immobilizing agents may have been the major factor affecting immobilizing efficiency. In addition, the total and bioavailable Cd in soil-water extracts was only 16.13-35.41% of the sensor contact assay-determined Cd (BSWS), which indicated that the whole-cell sensor-based contact assay was more practical in assessing the risk of Cd in soil after immobilization since it would not overrate the immobilizing capacity of the agents.

Background Upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UUTUC) is one of the uncommon malignancies lacking of prognostic indicators. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) has been demonstrated to correlate with clinical outcomes in human cancers. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prognostic implication of the preoperative LDH in UUTUC. Patients and Methods A cohort of 100 UUTUC samples along with the preoperative LDH value was recruited from January 1990 to June 2011. The cutoff value was set at 245 u/L for the upper value of normal limitation. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to determine the association of LDH with overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Results Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that high level of LDH (> 245 u/L) was significantly associated with poor OS ( P P = .002). Multivariate Cox proportional analysis indicated LDH, controlled by vascular invasion, pathological stage, lymph node status, subsequent bladder tumor, tumor grade, tumor necrosis, architecture, and multifocality, was as an independent predictor of OS (hazard ratio, 3.181; 95% confidence interval, 1.223-8.276; P = .018) and DFS (hazard ratio, 3.041; 95% confidence interval, 1.247-7.417; P = .015). Stratified showed that elevated serum LDH was correlated with the worse OS in patients without lymph node metastasis ( P = .002) and those at advanced pathological stage ( P Conclusion The preoperative LDH was an independent prognostic factor for patients with UUTUC and could be used as a risk factor to predict the tumor aggressiveness.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is a neoplasm that arises from follicular dendritic cells. FDCSs originating in the abdomen are extremely rare. Clinically, they often mimic a wide variety of other abdominal tumors, and correct preoperative diagnosis is often a challenging task. To date, only scattered cases of abdominal FDCS have been reported and few data are available on their radiological features. Here we present the computer tomography imaging findings of 5 patients with surgically and pathologically demonstrated abdominal FDCS. An abdominal FDCS should be included in the differential diagnosis when single or multiple masses with relatively large size, well- or ill-defined borders, complex internal architecture with marked internal necrosis and/or focal calcification, and heterogeneous enhancement with “rapid wash-in and slow wash-out” or “progressive enhancement” enhancement patterns in the solid component are seen.

Background The focus of this study was to assess the impact of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) on both the recurrence of cancer and the long-term survival of Chinese patients with resectable gastric cancer (GC). Methods A retrospective analysis of the clinicopathological data for 1148 GC patients who had undergone gastrectomy with regional lymphadenectomy was performed. The primary objective was to assess the correlation between LVI and post-surgery outcomes for each patient. This was done by routine H & E staining for LVI on patients’ disease-free survival (DFS) and disease-specific survival (DSS). Results LVI was detected in 404 (35.2%) of the 1148 GC patients. The presence of LVI was significantly correlated with the level of CA19-9, the tumor size, the Lauren classification, tumor differentiation, gastric wall invasive depth, lymph node involvement, distant metastasis and an advanced TNM stage. There was a lower DFS and DSS in the patients with LVI as compared to the patients without LVI. A multivariate analysis also identified LVI as an independent prognostic factor of both DSS and DFS. Conclusions The presence of LVI is a risk factor for the recurrence of cancer and an independent indicator of a poor outcome in GC patients following surgery. The LVI status should be taken into consideration when determining the best approach for the treatment of the individual.
