54. Catalytic role of HI in the interstellar synthesis of complex organic molecule

Abstract

Using quantum chemical calculations, we model the pathways for synthesizing two purine nucleobases, adenine and guanine, in the gas-phase interstellar environment, surrounded by neutral atomic hydrogen (HI). HI is found active in facilitating a series of fundamental proton transfer processes of organic synthesis, including bond formation, cyclization, dehydrogenation, and H migration. The reactive potential barriers were significantly reduced in the alternative pathways created by HI, leading to a remarkable increase in the reaction rate. The presence of HI also lowered the reactive activation temperature from 757.8 K to 131.5-147.0 K, indicating the thermodynamic feasibility of these pathways in star-forming regions where some of the reactants have been astronomically detected. Abstract

In this paper, we prove the existence of a bound state in a waveguide that consists of two semi-infinite periodic structures separated by an interface. The two periodic structures are perturbed from the same periodic medium with a Dirac point and they possess a common band gap enclosing the Dirac point. The bound state, which is called interface mode here, decays exponentially away from the interface with a frequency located in the common band gap and can be viewed as a bifurcation from the Dirac point. Using the layer potential technique and asymptotic analysis, we first characterize the band gap opening for the two perturbed periodic media and derive the asymptotics of the Bloch modes near the band gap edges. By formulating the eigenvalue problem for the waveguide with two semi-infinite structures using a boundary integral equation over the interface and analyzing the characteristic values of the associated boundary integral operator, we prove the existence of the interface mode for the waveguide when the perturbation of the periodic medium is small.

Abstract

Various fats are used in swine diets as sources of energy and essential fatty acids. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of fat supplementation during gestation on reproductive performance, milk composition of sows and intestinal development of their offspring. Fifty sows were randomly allocated into two groups receiving the control (CON) and high-fat diets (HF diet) during gestation. After farrowing, all sows received the same lactation diet and were fed ad libitum until weaning at day 20 of lactation. The results showed that being fed the HF diet did not markedly improve the performance of sows and their offspring. However, the HF diet increased (p < 0.05) the colostrum contents of protein and no-fat solids, and the plasma concentration of prolactin at farrowing. Moreover, piglets born of sows fed the HF diet had higher (p < 0.05) jejunal villous height, as well as deeper (p < 0.05) jejunal and colonic crypt depths compared with piglets born of sows fed the CON diet. In addition, piglets born of sows fed the HF diet had markedly increased (p < 0.05) mRNA abundances of innate immunity-related genes on toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), toll-like receptor 9 (TLR-9) and myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) in ileum compared with piglets born of sows fed the CON diet. These findings indicated that dietary fat supplementation during gestation did not markedly improve the performance of sows and their offspring, but improved colostrum quality and concentration of prolactin on the day of farrowing, associated with modifications of intestinal morphology and innate immunity of their offspring.

Abstract

The current study aimed to determine whether dietary nucleotides supplementation could improve growth performance, intestinal development and immune function of intra-uterine growth restricted (IUGR) neonate using pig as animal model. A total of 14 pairs of normal birth weight (NBW) and IUGR piglets (7 days old) were randomly assigned to receive a milk-based control diet (CON diet) or diet supplemented with nucleotides (NT diet) for a period of 21 days. Blood samples, intestinal tissues and digesta were collected at necropsy and analyzed for morphology, digestive enzyme activities, microbial populations, peripheral immune cells, expression of intestinal innate immunity and barrier-related genes and proteins. Abstract

BackgroundRepetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been increasingly used as a treatment modality for chronic insomnia disorder (CID). However, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the efficacy of rTMS is limited.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate rTMS-induced alterations in resting-state functional connectivity and to find potential connectivity biomarkers for predicting and tracking clinical outcomes after rTMS.MethodsThirty-seven patients with CID received a 10-session low frequency rTMS treatment applied to the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Before and after treatment, the patients underwent resting-state electroencephalography recordings and a sleep quality assessment using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI).ResultsAfter treatment, rTMS significantly increased the connectivity of 34 connectomes in the lower alpha frequency band (8-10 Hz). Additionally, alterations in functional connectivity between the left insula and the left inferior eye junction, as well as between the left insula and medial prefrontal cortex, were associated with a decrease in PSQI score. Further, the correlation between the functional connectivity and PSQI persisted 1 month after the completion of rTMS as evidenced by subsequent electroencephalography (EEG) recordings and the PSQI assessment.ConclusionBased on these results, we established a link between alterations in functional connectivity and clinical outcomes of rTMS, which suggested that EEG-derived functional connectivity changes were associated with clinical improvement of rTMS in treating CID. These findings provide preliminary evidence that rTMS may improve insomnia symptoms by modifying functional connectivity, which can be used to inform prospective clinical trials and potentially for treatment optimization.

Abstract

Urban metro flow prediction is of great value for metro operation scheduling, passenger flow management and personal travel planning. However, it faces two main challenges. First, different metro stations, e.g. transfer stations and non-transfer stations, have unique traffic patterns. Second, it is challenging to model complex spatio-temporal dynamic relation of metro stations. To address these challenges, we develop a spatio-temporal dynamic graph relational learning model (STDGRL) to predict urban metro station flow. First, we propose a spatio-temporal node embedding representation module to capture the traffic patterns of different stations. Second, we employ a dynamic graph relationship learning module to learn dynamic spatial relationships between metro stations without a predefined graph adjacency matrix. Finally, we provide a transformer-based long-term relationship prediction module for long-term metro flow prediction. Extensive experiments are conducted based on metro data in Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Hangzhou. Experimental results show the advantages of our method beyond 11 baselines for urban metro flow prediction.

Abstract

Topologically protected wave motion has attracted considerable interest due to its novel properties and potential applications in many different fields. In this work, we study edge modes and traveling edge states via the linear Dirac equations with so-called domain wall masses. The unidirectional edge state provides a heuristic approach to more general traveling edge states through the localized behavior along slowly varying edges. We show the leading asymptotic solutions of two typical edge states that follow the circular and curved edges with small curvature by analytic and quantitative arguments.

Abstract

Weather Forecasting is an attractive challengeable task due to its influence on human life and complexity in atmospheric motion. Supported by massive historical observed time series data, the task is suitable for data-driven approaches, especially deep neural networks. Recently, the Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) based methods have achieved excellent performance for spatio-temporal forecasting. However, the canonical GNNs-based methods only individually model the local graph of meteorological variables per station or the global graph of whole stations, lacking information interaction between meteorological variables in different stations. In this paper, we propose a novel Hierarchical Spatio-Temporal Graph Neural Network (HiSTGNN) to model cross-regional spatio-temporal correlations among meteorological variables in multiple stations. An adaptive graph learning layer and spatial graph convolution are employed to construct self-learning graph and study hidden dependency among nodes of variable-level and station-level graph. For capturing temporal pattern, the dilated inception as the backbone of gate temporal convolution is designed to model long and various meteorological trends. Moreover, a dynamic interaction learning is proposed to build bidirectional information passing in hierarchical graph. Experimental results on three real-world meteorological datasets demonstrate the superior performance of HiSTGNN beyond 7 baselines and it reduces the errors by 4.2% to 11.6% especially compared to state-of-the-art weather forecasting method., Comment: Some sections will be modified because of some errors of the experiments and presents
