We present a new magnetohydrodynamic-particle-in-cell (MHD-PIC) code integrated into the Athena++ framework. It treats energetic particles as in conventional PIC codes while the rest of thermal plasmas are treated as background fluid described by MHD, thus primarily targeting at multi-scale astrophysical problems involving the kinetic physics of the cosmic-rays (CRs). The code is optimized toward efficient vectorization in interpolation and particle deposits, with excellent parallel scaling. The code is also compatible with static/adaptive mesh refinement, with dynamic load balancing to further enhance multi-scale simulations. In addition, we have implemented a compressing/expanding box framework which allows adiabatic driving of CR pressure anisotropy, as well as the $\delta f$ method that can dramatically reduce Poisson noise in problems where distribution function $f$ is only expected to slightly deviate from the background. The code performance is demonstrated over a series of benchmark test problems including particle acceleration in non-relativistic parallel shocks. In particular, we reproduce the linear growth of the CR gyro-resonant (streaming and pressure anisotropy) instabilities, under both the periodic and expanding/compressing box setting. Generalization, the process of applying knowledge acquired in one context to other contexts, often drives the expression of similar behaviors in related situations. At the cellular level, generalization is thought to depend on the activity of overlapping neurons that represent shared features between contexts (general representations). Using contextual fear conditioning in mice, we demonstrate that generalization can also occur in response to stress and result from reactivation of specific, rather than general context representations. We found that generalization emerges during memory retrieval, along with stress-induced abnormalities of septohippocampal oscillatory activity and acetylcholine release, which are typically found in negative affective states. In hippocampal neurons that represent aversive memories and drive generalization, cholinergic septohippocampal afferents contributed to a unique reactivation pattern of cFos, Npas4, and repressor element-1 silencing transcription factor (REST). Together, these findings suggest that generalization can be triggered by perceptually dissimilar but valence-congruent memories of specific aversive experiences. Through promoting the reactivation of such memories and their interference with ongoing behavior, abnormal cholinergic signaling could underlie maladaptive cognitive and behavioral generalization linked to negative affective states.

Functional brain networks require dynamic reconfiguration to support flexible cognitive function. However, the developmental principles shaping brain network dynamics remain poorly understood. Here, we report the longitudinal development of large-scale brain network dynamics during childhood and adolescence, and its connection with gene expression profiles. Using a multilayer network model, we show the temporally varying modular architecture of child brain networks, with higher network switching primarily in the association cortex and lower switching in the primary regions. This topographical profile exhibits progressive maturation, which manifests as reduced modular dynamics, particularly in the transmodal (e.g., default-mode and frontoparietal) and sensorimotor regions. These developmental refinements mediate age-related enhancements of global network segregation and are linked with the expression profiles of genes associated with the enrichment of ion transport and nucleobase-containing compound transport. These results highlight a progressive stabilization of brain dynamics, which expand our understanding of the neural mechanisms that underlie cognitive development.

To explore the regulation of keratinocyte growth factor (KGF) in the process of repairing rat skin wounds by taspine hydrochloride (TA/HCl), 45 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were purchased and divided into an experimental group, a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) control group, and a basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) control group, each with 15 only. A back trauma model was innovatively adopted to prevent rats from biting and contaminating. In recent years, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have become a much charming photovoltaic technology and have triggered enormous studies worldwide, owing to their high efficiency, low cost and ease of preparation. The power conversion efficiency has rapidly increased by more than 6 times to the current 25.5% in the past decade. Hole transport materials (HTMs) are an indispensable part of PSCs, which great affect the efficiency, the cost and the stability of PSCs. Inorganic Cu-based p-type semiconductors are a kind of representative inorganic HTMs in PSCs due to their unique advantages of rich variety, low cost, excellent hole mobility, adjustable energy levels, good stability, low temperature and scalable processing ability. In this review, the research progress in new materials and the control of photoelectric properties of Cu-based inorganic HTMs were first summarized systematically. And then, concerning different processing methods, advances of the interface engineering of Cu-based hole transport layers (HTLs) in PSCs were detailly discussed. Finally, the challenges and future trends of Cu-based inorganic HTMs and their interface engineering in PSCs were analyzed.

We report a two-dimensional Si photonic optical phased array (OPA) optimized for a large optical aperture with a minimal number of antennas while maintaining single-lobe far field. The OPA chip has an optical aperture of ∼ 200 µ m by 150 µm comprising a 9 × 9 antenna array. The two-dimensional spacings between these antennas are much larger than the wavelength and are highly non-uniform optimized by the genetic deep learning algorithm. The phase of each antenna is independently tunable by a thermo-optical phase shifter. The experimental results validate the design and exhibit a 0.39 ∘ × 0.41 ∘ beamwidth within the 3 dB steering range of 14 ∘ × 11 ∘ limited by the numerical aperture of the far-field camera system. The method can be easily extended to a larger aperture for narrower beamwidth and wider steering range.

Development of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma translocation protein 1 (MALT1) inhibitors is of great value and significance in the treatment of neoplastic disorders and inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. However, there is a lack of effective MALT1 inhibitors in clinic. Herein, a novel class of potent 5-oxo-1-thioxo-4,5-dihydro-1H-thiazolo[3,4-a]quinazoline-based MALT1 inhibitors and their covalent derivatives were first identified and designed through high-throughput screening. We demonstrated that compounds 15c, 15e, and 20c effectively inhibited the MALT1 protease and displayed selective cytotoxicity to activated B cell-like diffuse large B cell lymphoma with low single-digit micromolar potency. Furthermore, compound 20c specifically repressed NF-κB signaling and induced cell apoptosis in MALT1-dependent TMD8 cells in a dose-dependent manner. More importantly, 20c showed good pharmacokinetic properties and antitumor efficacy with no significant toxicity in the TMD8 xenograft tumor model. Collectively, this study provides valuable lead compounds of MALT1 inhibitors for further structural optimization and antitumor mechanism study.

Hot accretion flows contain collisionless plasmas that are believed to be capable of accelerating particles to very high energies, as a result of turbulence generated by the magnetorotational instability (MRI). We conduct unstratified shearing-box simulations of the MRI turbulence in ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD), and inject energetic (relativistic) test particles in simulation snapshots to conduct a detailed investigation on particle diffusion and stochastic acceleration. We consider different amount of net vertical magnetic flux to achieve different disk magnetizations levels at saturated states, with sufficiently high resolution to resolve the gyro-radii ($R_g$) of most particles. Particles with large $R_g$ ($\gtrsim0.03$ disk scale height $H$) show spatial diffusion coefficients of $\sim30$ and $\sim5$ times Bohm values in the azimuthal and poloidal directions, respectively. We further measure particle momentum diffusion coefficient $D(p)$ by applying the Fokker-Planck equation to particle momentum evolution. For these particles, contribution from turbulent fluctuations scales as $D(p)\propto p$, and shear acceleration takes over when $R_g\gtrsim0.1H$, characterized by $D(p)\propto p^3$. For particles with smaller $R_g$ ($\lesssim0.03H$), their spatial diffusion coefficients roughly scale as $\sim p^{-1}$, and show evidence of $D(p)\propto p^2$ scaling in momentum diffusion but with large uncertainties. We find that multiple effects contribute to stochastic acceleration/deceleration, and the process is also likely affected by intermittency in the MRI turbulence. Realization of on-board and inter-chip optical interconnects requires a photonic data link with power consumption well below their electrical counterparts (i.e., 50 Gb/s requires 2–4 pJ/bit/channel. External reverse-biased modulators could drastically reduce this power consumption. Here we design ultralow power GaAs/AlGaAs multi quantum well electro-reflective modulators operating at 1 V for facile integration with polymer “optical bridges”, utilizing coupled quantum confined Stark effect between adjacent quantum wells and optical coupling to hybrid surface plasmon-slab modes for significantly enhanced extinction ratio and spectral bandwidth. Distinctive from conventional electro-optical or electro-absorption modulators, this new design synergistically leverages ultra-large changes in both refractive index (|Δn|∼0.05) and absorption coefficient (Δα∼104 cm−1), achieving 35-50 dB extinction ratio at 1 V reverse bias with a low insertion loss of 1–3 dB, an incident angle tolerance of ∼5°, and a spectral bandwidth of 7–10 nm. The modulator power consumption is ∼1.9 fJ/bit without the need of thermal tuning, and the RC-limited bandwidth well exceeds 100 GHz. This paper studies alternative procurement modes for emergency supplies in the presence of a public sector and a private supplier. A key feature of such a supply chain is that the private supplier must consider commercial demand in addition to disaster demand. Three procurement modes are analysed: an option mode (OM), an order-before-disaster mode (OBDM) and a procurement-after-disaster mode (PADM). We provide the optimal decisions associated with these three modes. Theoretical results in the OM show that a large order is not always better for the private supplier. From theoretical and numerical comparative analyses, no mode is absolutely superior. For the public sector, there are two thresholds. When the disaster probability is less than the low threshold, the revenues of all procurement modes are the same; when the disaster probability is larger than the high threshold, the OBDM has the highest revenue; otherwise, the OM has the highest revenue. However, for the private supplier, the PADM always has the highest revenue.

Transgelin (TAGLN, also named SM22) is an actin-associated protein and affects dynamics of actin filaments. Deregulation of TAGLN contributes to the development of different cancers, and it is commonly considered to be a tumor suppressor. TAGLN is usually downregulated in prostate cancer; however, the detailed functions of TAGLN in prostate cancer and how TAGLN is regulated remains unclear. In this study, we confirmed that TAGLN is downregulated in prostate cancer tissues and demonstrated that the downregulation of TAGLN occurs through proteasomal degradation. Next, we found that the expression level of TAGLN is inversely correlated with TRAF6. We screened more than 20 E2–E3 pairs by in vitro ubiquitination assay and found that the E2A–TRAF6 pair catalyzed mono ubiquitination of TAGLN. We then identified the ubiquitination sites of TAGLN to be on K89 or K108 residues and demonstrated that ubiquitination of TAGLN on K89/K108 are important for TRAF6-mediated proteasomal degradation. Furthermore, we investigated the function of TAGLN in prostate cancer cells. We found that ablation of TAGLN promoted prostate cancer cell proliferation and suppressed their migration via activation of NF-κB and Myc signaling pathways. Overall, our study provided new insights into the mechanisms underlying TAGLN expression and activity in prostate cancer. Implications: E3 ligase TRAF6 mediate mono-ubiquitination and degradation of TAGLN, which leads to activation of NF-κB and Myc signaling pathways in prostate cancer cells.

Bone is the most common late metastasis of breast cancer. Bone metastasis causes not only severe bone pain, but also bone-related diseases such as pathological fractures, which are closely related to osteoclasts. The effects of demethoxycurcumin (DMC) on osteoclast biology has not been investigated. In this study, we explored the effects of DMC on MDA-MB-231 cells, MCF-7 cells, and osteoclasts induced by RANKL in vitro, as well as the protective effect on bone destruction of tumor bone metastasis in vivo. DMC showed inhibitory effect on the migration and promotes the apoptosis of MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells. At the same time, DMC inhibited osteoclast maturation and mature osteoclast bone resorption in a dose-dependent manner, and suppressed the expression of osteoclast marker genes TRAP, CTSK, MMP9, V-ATPase-d2 and DC-STAMP significantly. Biochemical data showed that DMC inhibited tumor cells and osteoclasts by inhibiting the early activation of ERK and JNK MAPK pathway. Consistent with the results in vitro, we confirmed that DMC protects bone destruction caused by tumor metastasis in vivo. In short, our study confirmed that DMC could be used as a potential drug for the treatment of tumor bone destruction.

The clinical efficacy of decellularized adipose tissue (DAT) combined with vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) in the treatment of wound healing in rats is investigated, and the changes of inflammatory factors are analyzed. The tissue defect model of SD (Sprague-Dawley) rats is established and divided into the combined group (n = 12) and the control group (n = 12) according to different treatment methods. The control group is treated with a single VSD technique, and the combined group is treated with DAT on the basis of the control group. The wound healing time of the two groups is observed. Wound tissue is collected 1 day, 10 days, 20 days, and 30 days after treatment, and neutrophil infiltration is observed by HE (hematoxylin-eosin) staining. The expression changes of IL-6 and IL-13 at each time point before and after treatment are compared. Histological observation shows that the cell infiltration is reduced in both groups, and the wound repair in the combined group is better than that in the control group. The experimental results show that the DAT combined with the VSD technique can further speed up wound healing and reduce inflammation in rats.

In this study, we study the load frequency control (LFC) problem for interconnected multiarea power systems (IMAPSs) with quantization and actuator failure. To effectively reduce the amount of data in the channel, input signals will be quantized before being transmitted from a controller to a system through the digital communication channel. To reveal the asynchronous phenomenon between the original plant and LFC with actuator failure, a hidden semi-Markov model is formulated. In addition, the stability of the jump system under network attack is discussed. On the basis of the Lyapunov theory, sufficient conditions are derived to ensure the stochastic stability of IMAPSs. Finally, the validity of the theoretical results is tested via a simulation example.

Objective To investigate the effects of high-dose rosuvastatin on ventricular remodelling and cardiac function in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Materials and Methods From January 2017 to March 2019, the clinical data of 93 patients with STEMI were collected and analysed, with 46 cases in the conventional-dose group (rosuvastatin, 10 mg/d) and 47 cases in the high-dose group (rosuvastatin, 20 mg/d). Blood lipid (TC, TG, LDL-C and HDL-C), serum inflammatory markers (hs-CRP, IL-6, TNF-α and ICAM-1), ventricular remodelling markers (NT-pro BNP, MMP-9, TIMP-4 and Gal-3) and indicators of cardiac function (LVESD, LVESD, LVESV, LVEDV, IVST and LVEF) were collected from all patients at the time of admission and 8 weeks after rosuvastatin treatment. An electroreflective modulator based on multiple-pass electroabsorption (EA) of coupled multiple quantum wells (CMQWs) is demonstrated for integration with low-loss polymer optical waveguides towards inter-chip and on-board optical interconnects at 850 nm. Proprioception is the ability to perceive environmental stimulations through internal sensory organs. Enabling proprioception is critical for robots to be aware of the environmental interactions and respond appropriately, particularly for high-payload grippers to ensure safety when handling delicate objects. State-of-the-art robotic grippers with soft actuators are typically equipped with pressure sensors for pneumatic regulation and control, but very few utilized them for proprioceptive purposes. This lack of environmental awareness was largely compensated by their inherent compliance and conformity, but also due to the generally limited force capabilities. Targeting at this gap, this work proposes a novel Proprioceptive Origamic Soft Actuator (POSA) joint, and a corresponding hybrid robotic gripper design with high-payload soft origamic actuators and rigid supporting frames, achieving up to 564.5 N actuator output force or 302.4 N finger gripping force at 150 kPa low pneumatic pressure and 3.2 kg self-weight. Despite the substantially higher force capability over state-of-the-art soft grippers, the proposed hybrid gripper could retain the excellent inherent compliance thanks to the novel soft origamic actuators. Moreover, a novel scheme of multi-actuator proprioception is proposed by only using the embedded pneumatic pressure sensors, to enable the hybrid gripper with environmental awareness, achieving real-time position and force estimations of errors at $ 1% and 5.6%, respectively. The principles, design, prototyping, and experiments of the proposed hybrid high-payload gripper were presented in this letter. Combining soft robotic compliance, high payload, and proprioception, the gripper could both hold a pealed grape and crack a walnut, with position and force signals being measured without requiring dedicated sensors.

High-performance non-noble electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are the prerequisite for large-scale utilization of fuel cells. Herein, a type of sandwiched-like non-noble electrocatalyst with highly dispersed FeNx active sites embedded in a hierarchically porous carbon/graphene heterostructure was fabricated using a bottom-up strategy. The in situ ion substitution of Fe3+ in a nitrogen-containing MOF (ZIF-8) allows the Fe-heteroatoms to be uniformly distributed in the MOF precursor, and the assembly of Fe-doped ZIF-8 nano-crystals with graphene-oxide and in situ reduction of graphene-oxide afford a sandwiched-like Fe-doped ZIF-8/graphene heterostructure. This type of heterostructure enables simultaneous optimization of FeNx active sites, architecture and interface properties for obtaining an electron-catalyst after a one-step carbonization. The synergistic effect of these factors render the resulting catalysts with excellent ORR activities. The half-wave potential of 0.88 V vs. RHE outperforms most of the none-noble metal catalyst and is comparable with the commercial Pt/C (20 wt %) catalyst. Apart from the high activity, this catalyst exhibits excellent durability and good methanol-tolerance. Detailed investigations demonstrate that a moderate content of Fe dopants can effectively increase the intrinsic activities, and the hybridization of graphene can enhance the reaction kinetics of ORR. The strategy proposed in this work gives an inspiration towards developing efficient noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for ORR.

Breast cancer metastases to bone poses a significant challenge for the administration of treatment strategies. The bone microenvironment, metastatic tumor cells, osteoclasts, and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) all play crucial and synergistic roles in creating a favorable environment for the proliferation, progression, and survival of the metastatic tumor, which in turn induces osteoclast-mediated bone destruction. In this study, we functionalized immunostimulatory cytosine-phosphate-guanosine (CpG)-loaded metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles with bone targeting capabilities by surface modification with FDA approved antiresorptive bisphosphonate, zoledronic acid (ZOL). The functionalized bone targeting immunostimulatory MOF (BT-isMOF) nanoparticles demonstrates strong binding to calcium phosphate in vitro and exhibits specific targeting and accumulation in bone tissues in vivo. In vitro cellular and biochemical analyses demonstrated that the BT-isMOF nanoparticles could potently inhibit osteoclast formation and concomitantly induce macrophages polarization toward the M1 pro-inflammatory phenotype. Finally, using the intratibial murine model of breast cancer bone metastasis, we showed that the administration of BT-isMOF nanoparticles significantly suppressed osteoclast-mediated bone destruction and enhanced polarization of tumor-resident macrophages to M1 phenotype. Together, our data provides promising evidence for the potential therapeutic application of the BT-isMOF nanoparticles in the treatment of breast cancer bone metastases.

Osteoclasts are the main cells involved in normal bone remodeling and pathological bone destruction in vivo. Overactivation of osteoclasts can lead to osteolytic diseases, including breast cancer, bone tumors, arthritis, the aseptic loosening of orthopedic implants, and Paget's disease. Excessive reactive oxygen species are the main cause of osteoclast overactivation. We have synthesized chitosan derived nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with a high synthetic yield and the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). N-CDs effectively abrogated RANKL-induced elevation in ROS generation and therefore impaired the activation of NF-κB and MAPK pathways. Osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption was effectively attenuated in vitro. Furthermore, the in vivo administration of N-CDs in mice protected them against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced calvarial bone destruction and breast cancer cell-induced tibial bone loss. Based on the good biocompatibility of N-CDs and the ability to efficiently remove ROS, a nanomaterial treatment scheme was provided for the first time for the clinical treatment of osteolytic diseases.

Rationale: Constitutive activation of the NF-κB signalling pathway plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of activated B cell-like diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (ABC-DLBCLs), the most aggressive and chemoresistant form of DLBCL. In ABC-DLBCLs, the CARMA1-BCL10 (CB) complex forms a filamentous structure and functions as a supramolecular organizing centre (CB-SMOC) that is required for constitutive NF-κB activation, making it an attractive drug target for ABC-DLBCL treatment. However, a pharmaceutical approach targeting CB-SMOC has been lacking. Here, we developed Bcl10 peptide inhibitors (BPIs) that specifically target the BCL10 filamentation process. Methods: Electron microscopy and immunofluorescence imaging were used to visualize the effect of the BPIs on the BCL10 filamentation process. The cytotoxicity of the tested BPIs was evaluated in DLBCL cell lines according to cell proliferation assays. Different in vitro experiments (pharmacokinetics, immunoprecipitation, western blotting, annexin V and PI staining) were conducted to determine the functional mechanisms of the BPIs. The in vivo therapeutic effect of the BPIs was examined in different xenograft DLBCL mouse models. Finally, Ki67 and TUNEL staining and histopathology analysis were used to evaluate the antineoplastic mechanisms and systemic toxicity of the BPIs. Results: We showed that these BPIs can effectively disrupt the BCL10 filamentation process, destabilize BCL10 and suppress NF-κB signalling in ABC-DLBCL cells. By examining a panel of DLBCL cell lines, we found that these BPIs selectively repressed the growth of CB-SMOC-dependent DLBCL cells by inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. Moreover, by converting the BPIs to acquire a D-retro inverso (DRI) configuration, we developed DRI-BPIs with significantly improved intracellular stability and unimpaired BPI activity. These DRI-BPIs selectively repressed the growth of CB-SMOC-dependent DLBCL tumors in mouse xenograft models without eliciting discernible adverse effects. Conclusion: We developed novel BPIs to target the BCL10 filamentation process and demonstrated that targeting BCL10 by BPIs is a potentially safe and effective pharmaceutical approach for the treatment of ABC-DLBCL and other CB-SMOC-dependent malignancies.

Drug-loaded pH-responsive nanoparticles are potential drug carriers in nanotherapeutics delivery because they can remain stable in normal tissues but can disassemble and release drug molecules in tumors. In this study, the mechanisms of self-assembly and disassembly were investigated by analyzing the characteristics of three kinds of biomimetic peptides with different components and sequences. The structural parameters and energy changes during self-assembly and disassembly were calculated by molecular dynamics simulation. Transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy were used to observe morphological changes and measure the strength of hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions between peptides. Results show that the hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions play crucial roles in the self-assembly and disassembly processes of peptides. The structure of the peptide clusters after self-assembly became tighter as the difference between hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions increased, whereas a decrease in this difference led to the increased disassembly of the peptides. In general, polyethylene glycol chain modification was necessary in disassembly, and peptides with straight structures had stronger disassembly ability than that with branched structures with the same components. The morphology of peptide clusters can be controlled under different pH values by changing the composition and structure of the peptides for enhanced drug retention and sustained release.

Topological design for band structures of artificial materials such as acoustic crystals provides a powerful tool to manipulate wave propagating in a robust and symmetry-protected way. In this paper, based on the band folding and breaking mechanism by building blocks with acoustic atoms, we construct a three-dimensional topological acoustic crystal with a large complete bandgap. At a mirror-symmetry domain wall, two gapped symmetry and anti-symmetry surface states can be found in the bandgap, originated from two opposite Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains. Remarkably, by enforcing a glide symmetry on the domain wall, we can tune the original gapped surface states in a gapless fashion at the boundaries of surface Brillouin zone, acting as omnidirectional acoustic quantum spin Hall effect. Our tunable yet straightforward acoustic crystals offer promising potentials in realizing future topological acoustic devices.

We demonstrate an inverse design method by combining deep neural networks and genetic optimization. The method significantly reduces the training data compared with existing methods. The method is adopted to design some ultra-compact photonic devices to show its high computing efficiency and great flexibility.

During the past decades, academics and practitioners have basically reached a consensus on the relationship between corporate charitable giving and enterprise innovation. However, so far, few research studies have explored the essential reasons and the influencing mechanisms behind the relationship, through sufficient theoretical or empirical study. To clarify this relationship, this paper collects and reviews 196 related articles which include the topics of corporate philanthropy and corporate innovation over the period of 1966–2022, and analyzes their content in a systematic and comprehensive manner. Based on the literature analysis, it clarifies the current state and the differentiation trends of research topics in this field, then discusses the industry operations and theoretical development of corporate charitable giving. Through literature reviewing and practical analysis, this paper summarizes the mechanism and path of the influence of charitable giving on enterprise innovation from four perspectives: technical network, political reputation, media attention and resource adjustment, and proposes the external factors at macro- and meso-levels. By constructing a multi-level theoretical framework, this paper clarifies the preconditions, key factors and mediating mechanisms of charitable donation affecting enterprise innovation. This paper contributes a novel theoretical perspective for further theoretical development and for effectively managing corporate charitable giving and enterprise innovations. The paper concludes by offering several suggestions for future research on corporate charitable giving.

We present a method to design an optical phased array (OPA) simultaneously realizing both narrow beam width and aliasing-free 2D beam steering without the need to arrange the antennas at actual half-wavelength pitch. The method realizes an effective half-wavelength pitch in one direction formed by location projection of the antennas. The distances between the antennas in the other direction can be sufficiently large to form an effective large aperture realizing narrow beam width without needing a long grating. The presented method is proven by both theory and numerical simulations to achieve an equivalent grating-lobe-free far field of an ordinary half-wavelength pitch design. One design example exhibits 180° steering with a minimal beam width of 0.4° * 0.032° and a sidelobe suppression ratio of > 13 d B .

During motor learning, dendritic spines on pyramidal neurons (PNs) in the primary motor cortex (M1) undergo reorganization. Intriguingly, the inhibition from local somatostatin-expressing inhibitory neurons (SST-INs) plays an important role in regulating the PN plasticity and thus new motor skill acquisition. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. Here, we identified that the early-response transcription factor, NPAS4, is selectively expressed in SST-INs during motor learning. By utilizing in vivo two-photon imaging in mice, we found that cell-type-specific deletion of Npas4 in M1 disrupted learning-induced spine reorganization among PNs and impaired motor learning. In addition, NPAS4-expressing SST-INs exhibited lower neuronal activity during task-related movements, and chemogenetically increasing the activity of NPAS4-expressing ensembles was sufficient to mimic the effects of Npas4 deletion. Together, our results reveal an instructive role of NPAS4-expressing SST-INs in modulating the inhibition to downstream task-related PNs to allow proper spine reorganization that is critical for motor learning.
