Magnetars are conjectured to be highly magnetized neutron stars (NSs). Strong internal magnetic field and elasticity in the crust may deform the stars and lead to free precession. We study the precession dynamics of triaxially deformed NSs incorporating the near-field and the far-field electromagnetic torques. We obtain timing residuals for different NS geometries and torques. We also investigate the polarized X-ray and radio signals from precessing magnetars. The modulations on the Stokes parameters are obtained for thermal X-rays emitted from the surface of magnetars. For radio signals, we apply the simple rotating vector model (RVM) to give the modulations on the position angle (PA) of the polarization. Our results are comprehensive, ready to be used to search for magnetar precession with timing data and polarizations of X-ray and radio emissions. Future observations of precessing magnetars will give us valuable information on the geometry and the strength of the strong magnetic fields, the emission geometry, as well as the equation of state of NSs. To understand the X-ray emission of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we explored the optical-to-X-ray variation correlation of a radio-loud quasar (RLQ) SDSS J121426.52+140258.9 (hereafter J1214+1402) with multi-epoch observations by the Swift and XMM–Newton telescopes. With the historical multiband data, we found that the infrared-to-X-ray flux of RLQ J1214+1402 should not be dominated by the beamed-jet emission. The Swift optical/UV and X-ray light curves showed that J1214+1402 has two optical states, with low flux before 2014 April 8 and high flux after 2014 June 11, but has no significant X-ray variations during the time range between 2007 March 9 and 2014 August 4. This result was supported by the XMM–Newton observations in the time overlapping with Swift. Interestingly, the early XMM–Newton data prior to the Swift time present two unusual emission epochs when J1214+1402 has relatively low optical fluxes but has the brightest X-ray fluxes. The overall independence of optical-to-X-ray variation seems hard to describe by the disc–corona model. With the X-ray spectral fitting, we find that the soft X-ray excess in J1214+1402 appears only during the high optical state when the X-ray emission is at a low state. The soft X-ray excess in J1214+1402 is difficult to explain by an ionized accretion disc; instead, it may be related to the warm corona. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A complete census of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is a prerequisite for understanding the growth of supermassive black holes across cosmic time. A significant challenge towards this goal is the whereabouts of heavily obscured AGN that remain uncertain. This paper sets new constraints on the demographics of this population by developing a methodology that combines X-ray spectral information with priors derived from multiwavelength observations. We select X-ray AGN in the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey and fit their |$2.2\!-\!500\, \mu \mathrm{m}$| spectral energy distributions with galaxy and AGN templates to determine the mid-infrared (⁠|$6\, \mu \mathrm{m}$|⁠) luminosity of the AGN component. Empirical correlations between X-ray and |$6\, \mu \mathrm{m}$| luminosities are then adopted to infer the intrinsic accretion luminosity at X-rays for individual AGN. This is used as prior information in our Bayesian X-ray spectral analysis to estimate physical properties, such as line-of-sight obscuration. Our approach breaks the degeneracies between accretion luminosity and obscuration that affect X-ray spectral analysis, particularly for the most heavily obscured (Compton-Thick) AGN with low photon counts X-ray spectra. The X-ray spectral results are then combined with the selection function of the Chandra COSMOS Legacy survey to derive the AGN space density and a Compton-Thick fraction of |$21.0^{+16.1}_{-9.9}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| at redshifts z < 0.5. At higher redshift, our analysis suggests upper limits to the Compton-Thick AGN fraction of |$\lesssim 40{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. These estimates are at the low end of the range of values determined in the literature and underline the importance of multiwavelength approaches for tackling the challenge of heavily obscured AGN demographics. We present the Living Swift- XRT Point Source (LSXPS) catalogue and real-time transient detector. This system allows us for the first time to carry out low-latency searches for new transient X-ray events fainter than those available to the current generation of wide-field imagers, and report their detection in near real time. Previously, such events could only be found in delayed searches, e.g. of archival data; our low-latency analysis now enables rapid and ongoing follow-up of these events, enabling the probing of time-scales previously inaccessible. The LSXPS is, uniquely among X-ray catalogues, updated in near real time, making this the first up-to-date record of the point sources detected by a sensitive X-ray telescope: the Swift X-ray Telescope. The associated upper limit calculator likewise makes use of all available data allowing contemporary upper limits to be rapidly produced on demand. These facilities, which enable the low-latency transient system, are also fully available to the community, providing a powerful resource for time-domain and multimessenger astrophysics. The field of artificial intelligence based image enhancement has been rapidly evolving over the last few years and is able to produce impressive results on non-astronomical images. In this work, we present the first application of Machine Learning based super-resolution (SR) and de-noising (DN) to enhance X-ray images from the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton  telescope. Using XMM-Newton images in band [0.5, 2] keV from the European Photon Imaging Camera pn detector (EPIC-pn), we develop XMM-SuperRes and XMM-DeNoise – deep learning-based models that can generate enhanced SR and DN images from real observations. The models are trained on realistic XMM-Newton simulations such that XMM-SuperRes will output images with two times smaller point-spread function and with improved noise characteristics. The XMM-DeNoise model is trained to produce images with 2.5× the input exposure time from 20 to 50 ks. When tested on real images, DN improves the image quality by 8.2 per cent, as quantified by the global peak-signal-to-noise ratio. These enhanced images allow identification of features that are otherwise hard or impossible to perceive in the original or in filtered/smoothed images with traditional methods. We demonstrate the feasibility of using our deep learning models to enhance XMM-Newton X-ray images to increase their scientific value in a way that could benefit the legacy of the XMM-Newton archive. Aims. We aim to search for a hidden leptonic accelerator, such as a high-Ė pulsar, associated with the unidentified TeV object HESS J1702−420A. Methods. We carried out a 72 ks X-ray observation with the XMM-Newton satellite and analyzed the resulting data jointly with the publicly available HESS spectral energy distribution (SED) results to derive constraints on the leptonic contribution to the TeV emission of HESS J1702−420A. A set of scripts dedicated to the multi-wavelength modeling of X-ray and γ-ray data, based on Gammapy, Naima, and Xspec, has been developed in the context of this work and made publicly available along with this paper. Results. No object clearly associated with HESS J1702−420A was found in the XMM-Newton data. After excluding the unidentified object Suzaku src B as a possible X-ray counterpart and classifying it as a new cataclysmic variable source candidate, we derived strict upper limits on the level of diffuse X-ray emission in the HESS J1702−420A region: F(2 − 10 keV)≲5.4  × 10−5 keV  cm−2 s−1 at 2σ (≈95.5%) confidence level. A tight constraint on the magnetic field was derived, under a one-zone leptonic scenario, by jointly fitting the XMM-Newton spectra and the HESS SED: B ≲ 1.45 μG at 2σ level. We additionally report the serendipitous discovery of a new extended X-ray source with a hard spectral index of 1.99 ± 0.45, named XMMU J170147.3−421407 which is likely Galactic. Its classification as a high-speed runaway pulsar wind nebula (PWN), possibly associated with HESS J1702−420A, is not obvious but cannot be ruled out either. Conclusions. The hard γ-ray object HESS J1702−420A remains unidentified, but the absence of a clear X-ray counterpart strongly challenges simple leptonic scenarios. The only remaining possible leptonic counterpart for HESS J1702−420A appears to be a newly discovered X-ray source with extended morphology and hard spectral index, which may be a PWN powered by a high-speed runaway pulsar. Using the radio science experiment onboard the Akatsuki spacecraft and an in-house developed one-dimensional photochemical model (1D-PCM) characteristic features of the V1 layer in Venus ionosphere, which peaks ∼125 km, have been studied. The shape of a V1 layer is highly variable; it can appear from mere as a slope change below the V2 layer to a clear prominent layer peak. We simulated the observations using 1D-PCM and found that the model solar X-ray flux at 1.5–3 nm and 5–10 nm bands need to be enhanced by a factor of 2–4 to reproduce a V1 layer. The model simulations also show that major ions below 135 km are O |$_2^+$| and NO+ with O |$_2^+$| increasing linearly up to ∼135 km, while NO+ peaks at around 127 km. Our analysis shows that for a case when the V1 layer appears as a slope change below the V2 layer, O |$_2^+$| ions are the dominant ions, whereas the NO+ ions are the major ion when a clear V1 peak appears. Actively accreting supermassive black holes significantly impact the evolution of their host galaxies, truncating further star formation by expelling large fractions of gas with wide-angle outflows. The X-ray band is key to understanding how these black hole winds affect their environment, as the outflows have high temperatures (∼105–8 K). We have developed a Bayesian framework for characterizing active galactic nucleus outflows with an improved ability to explore parameter space and perform robust model selection. We applied this framework to a new 700 ks and an archival 315 ks Chandra High Energy Transmission Gratings observation of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051. We have detected six absorbers intrinsic to NGC 4051. These wind components span velocities from 400 to 30 000 km s−1. We have determined that the most statistically significant wind component is purely collisionally ionized, which is the first detection of such an absorber. This wind has T ≈ 107 K and v ≈ 880 km s−1 and remains remarkably stable between the two epochs. Other slow components also remain stable across time. Fast outflow components change their properties between 2008 and 2016, suggesting either physical changes or clouds moving in and out of the line of sight. For one of the fast components, we obtain one of the tightest wind density measurements to date, log  n /(cm−3) = 13.0 |$^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$|⁠ , and determine that it is located at ∼240 gravitational radii. The estimated total outflow power surpasses 5 per cent of the bolometric luminosity (albeit with large uncertainties) making it important in the context of galaxy–black hole interactions. Astronomers are increasingly faced with a deluge of information, and finding worthwhile targets of study in the sea of data can be difficult. Outlier identification studies are a method that can be used to focus investigations by presenting a smaller set of sources that could prove interesting because they do not follow the trends of the underlying population. We apply a principal component analysis (PCA) and an unsupervised random forest algorithm (uRF) to sources from the Chandra Source Catalog v.2 (CSC2). We present 119 high-significance sources that appear in all repeated applications of our outlier identification algorithm (OIA). We analyse the characteristics of our outlier sources and cross-match them with the SIMBAD data base. Our outliers contain several sources that were previously identified as having unusual or interesting features by studies. This OIA leads to the identification of interesting targets that could motivate more detailed study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present the X-ray analysis of Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR8 redMaPPer (SDSSRM) clusters using data products from the XMM Cluster Survey (XCS). In total, 1189 SDSSRM clusters fall within the XMM – Newton footprint. This has yielded 456 confirmed detections accompanied by X-ray luminosity (LX) measurements. Of these clusters, 381 have an associated X-ray temperature measurement (TX). This represents one of the largest samples of coherently derived cluster TX values to date. Our analysis of the X-ray observable to richness scaling relations has demonstrated that scatter in the TX –λ relation is roughly a third of that in the LX –λ relation, and that the LX –λ scatter is intrinsic, i.e. will not be significantly reduced with larger sample sizes. Analysis of the scaling relation between LX and TX has shown that the fits are sensitive to the selection method of the sample, i.e. whether the sample is made up of clusters detected 'serendipitously' compared to those deliberately targeted by XMM. These differences are also seen in the LX –λ relation and, to a lesser extent, in the TX –λ relation. Exclusion of the emission from the cluster core does not make a significant impact on the findings. A combination of selection biases is a likely, but yet unproven, reason for these differences. Finally, we have also used our data to probe recent claims of anisotropy in the LX – TX relation across the sky. We find no evidence of anistropy, but stress this may be masked in our analysis by the incomplete declination coverage of the SDSS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The CZTI (Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager) onboard AstroSat is a high energy coded mask imager and spectrometer in the energy range of 20–100 keV. Above 100 keV, the dominance of Compton scattering cross-section in CZTI results in a significant number of 2-pixel Compton events and these have been successfully utilized for polarization analysis of Crab pulsar and nebula (and transients like Gamma-ray bursts) in 100–380 keV. These 2-pixel Compton events can also be used to extend the spectroscopic energy range of CZTI up to 380 keV for bright sources. However, unlike the spectroscopy in primary energy range, where simultaneous background measurement is available from masked pixels, Compton spectroscopy requires blank sky observation for background measurement. Background subtraction, in this case, is non-trivial because of the presence of both short-term and long-term temporal variations in the data, which depend on multiple factors like earth rotation and the effect of South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) regions etc. We have developed a methodology of background selection and subtraction that takes into account for these effects. Here, we describe these background selection and subtraction techniques and validate them using spectroscopy of Crab in the extended energy range of 30–380 keV region, and compare the obtained spectral parameters with the INTEGRAL results. This new capability allows for the extension of the energy range of AstroSat spectroscopy and will also enable the simultaneous spectropolarimetric study of other bright sources like Cygnus X-1. We present a new statistical method for constructing background subtracted measurements from event list data gathered by X-ray and gamma-ray observatories. This method was initially developed specifically to construct images that account for the high background fraction and low overall count rates observed in survey data from the Mikhail Pavlinsky ART-XC telescope aboard the Spektrum Röntgen Gamma (SRG) mission, although the mathematical underpinnings are valid for data taken with other imaging missions and analysis applications. This method fully accounts for the expected Poisson fluctuations in both the sky photon and non-X-ray background count rates in a manner that does not result in unphysical negative counts. We derive the formulae for arbitrary confidence intervals for the source counts and show that our new measurement converges exactly to the standard background subtraction calculation in the high signal limit. Utilizing these results, we discuss several variants of images designed to optimize different science goals for both pointed and slewing telescopes. Using realistic simulated data of a galaxy cluster as observed by ART-XC, we show that our method provides a more significant and robust detection of the cluster emission as compared to a standard background subtraction. We also demonstrate its advantages using real observations of a point source from the ART-XC telescope. The second Swift -XRT Point Source catalogue offers a combination of sky coverage and sensitivity and presents an invaluable opportunity for transient discovery. We search the catalogue at the positions of inactive and active galaxies, and identify transient candidates by comparison with XMM–Newton and ROSAT. We recover 167 previously known transients and find 19 sources consistent with being new sources, estimating a completeness of |$\sim 65{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. These 19 new sources are split approximately equally between inactive and active hosts and their peak X-ray luminosities span ∼1042–1047 erg s−1. We find eight are best fit with non-thermal spectral models and one with a blackbody. We also discuss our methodology and its application to the forthcoming Living Swift -XRT Point Source catalogue for the potential near real time serendipitous discovery of ∼few new X-ray transients per year. In this work, the chemical evolution of pure acetonitrile ice at 13 K irradiated with broad-band soft X-rays (from 6 eV to 2 keV) is determined by using a computational methodology (procoda code) to best fit the experimental data. To simulate the chemical evolution of the acetonitrile ice under an astrophysical analogous situation, the code employs 273 reaction rates involving 33 molecular species (5 species observed in the experiment and 28 non-observed or unknown). The considered reaction network describes 240 chemical reactions (including dissociation, bimolecular, and termolecular rates) and 33 individual desorption rates. The summed desorption yield was determined to be 0.23 molecules per photon, in agreement with previous estimates. Average values for dissociation, bimolecular, and termolecular effective rate constants were determined as 2.3 × 10−3 s−1, 9.7 × 10−26 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, and 3.2 × 10−47 cm6 molecule−2 s−1, respectively. Some branching ratios within reaction groups were also determined. Molecular abundances at chemical equilibrium were obtained, such as CH3CN (67.5 per cent), H (10.6 per cent), CN (6.7 per cent), CH2 (6.4 per cent), CH (2.5 per cent), CH3 (1.2 per cent), CH4 (1.1 per cent), C2N2 (0.8 per cent), HCN (0.8 per cent), and CH3NC (0.6 per cent). The results of this work can be employed in future astrochemical models to map chemical evolution embedded species in astrophysical regions in the presence of an ionizing radiation field. We study the effect of returning radiation on the shape of the X-ray reflection spectrum in the case of thin accretion discs. We show that the returning radiation mainly influences the observed reflection spectrum for a large black hole spin (a > 0.9) and a compact primary source of radiation close to the black hole at height h < 5 r g, and that it dominates the reflected flux for extreme values of spin and compactness. The main effect of the returning radiation is to increase the irradiating flux on to the outer parts of the accretion disc, leading to stronger reflection and a flatter overall emissivity profile. By analysing simulated observations we show that neglecting returning radiation in existing studies of reflection-dominated sources has likely resulted in overestimating the height of the corona above the black hole. More than 200 quasars have been detected so far at z > 6, with only one showing clear signs of strong gravitational lensing. Some studies call for a missing population of lensed high- z quasars, but their existence is still in doubt. A large fraction of high- z quasars being lensed would have a significant effect on the shape of the intrinsic quasar luminosity function (QLF). Here, we perform the first systematic search for lensed X-ray-detected quasars at z ≳ 6 employing a Bayesian analysis, with the code baymax , to look for morphological evidence of multiple images that may escape a visual inspection. We analysed a sample of 22 quasars at z > 5.8 imaged by the Chandra X-ray observatory and found none with statistically significant multiple images. In the sub-sample of the eight sources with photon counts >20, we exclude multiple images with separations r > 1 arcsec and count ratios f > 0.4, or with separations as small as 0.7 arcsec and f > 0.7 at |$95{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| confidence level. Comparing this non-detection with predictions from theoretical models suggesting a high- and a low-lensed fraction, we placed upper limits on the bright-end slope, β, of the QLF. Using only the sub-sample with eight sources, we obtain, in the high-lensing model, a limit β < 3.38. Assuming no multiple source is present in the full sample of 22 sources, we obtain β < 2.89 and β < 3.53 in the high- and low-lensing models, respectively. The rotation powered pulsars Crab, Vela, and Geminga have double peaked folded light curves (FLC) at gamma-ray energies that have an approximate reflection symmetry. Here, this aspect is studied at soft X-ray energy by analysing a high-resolution FLC of the Crab pulsar obtained at 1–10 keV, using the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer observatory. The rising edge of the first peak of the FLC and the reflected version of the falling edge of the second peak are compared in several ways, and phase ranges are identified where the two curves are statistically similar. The best matching occurs when the two peaks are aligned, but only in a small phase range of ≈0.0244 just below their peaks; their mean difference is −0.78 ± 1.8 photons s−1 with a reduced χ2 of 0.93. If the first curve is convolved by a Laplace function, the corresponding numbers are phase range of ≈0.0274, mean difference of −1.23 ± 1.30 and χ2 of 0.76. These phase ranges are much smaller than those over which the reflection symmetry has been perceived. Therefore, the only way the two edges can have a mirror relation over a substantial phase range is if one invokes a broad and faint emission component of amplitude ≈100 photons s−1 and width ≈0.1 in phase, centred at phase ≈0.1 beyond the second peak. We probe the environmental properties of X-ray supernova remnants (SNRs) at various points along their evolutionary journey, especially the S-T phase, and their conformance with theoretically derived models of SNR evolution. The remnant size is used as a proxy for the age of the remnant. Our data set includes 34 Milky Way, 59 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and 5 Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) SNRs. We select remnants that have been definitively typed as either core-collapse (CC) or Type Ia supernovae, with well-defined size estimates, and a thermal X-ray flux measured over the entire remnant. A catalog of SNR size and X-ray luminosity is presented and plotted, with ambient density and age estimates from the literature. Model remnants with a given density, in the Sedov-Taylor (S-T) phase, are overplotted on the diameter-versus-luminosity plot, allowing the evolutionary state and physical properties of SNRs to be compared to each other, and to theoretical models. We find that small, young remnants are predominantly Type Ia remnants or high luminosity CCs, suggesting that many CC SNRs are not detected until after they have emerged from the progenitor's wind-blown bubble. An examination of the distribution of SNR diameters in the Milky Way and LMC reveals that LMC SNRs must be evolving in an ambient medium which is 30 per cent as dense as that in the Milky Way. Over the past few years, ∼30 extragalactic fast X-ray transients (FXRTs) have been discovered, mainly in Chandra and XMM-Newton data. Their nature remains unclear, with proposed origins, including a double neutron star merger, a tidal disruption event involving an intermediate-mass black hole and a white dwarf, or a supernova shock breakout. A decisive differentiation between these three promising mechanisms for their origin requires an understanding of the FXRT energetics, environments, and/or host properties. We present optical observations obtained with the Very Large Telescope for the FXRTs XRT 000519 and XRT 110103 and Gran Telescopio Canarias observations for XRT 000519 designed to search for host galaxies of these FXRTs. In the gs , rs , and R -band images, we detect an extended source on the north-west side of the |$\sim \, 1^{\prime \prime }$| (68 per cent confidence) error circle of the X-ray position of XRT 000519 with a Kron magnitude of gs  = 26.29 ± 0.09 (AB magnitude). We discuss the XRT 000519 association with the probable host candidate for various possible distances, and we conclude that if XRT 000519 is associated with the host candidate a supernova shock breakout scenario is likely excluded. No host galaxy is found near XRT 110103 down to a limiting magnitude of R > 25.8. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present an X-ray spectrum of the diffuse X-ray background (DXRB) between 1.5 and 120 keV, as measured with the Low-Energy Detector (LE) and the High-Energy Detector (HE) aboard the Insight-HXMT satellite, based on 'blank-sky' observations. LE covers a nominal energy range of 1–15 keV and HE 20–250 keV, but calibration issues and data quality narrowed the energy range for this work. The LE background was directly measured with 'blind' detector modules, while the HE background was derived from Earth-occultation data. With the LE data alone, the measured DXRB spectrum can be well-described by a power law; fitting the LE and HE data jointly, however, a spectral cut-off must be introduced in the model to account for the measurements above 30 keV. Modelling the combined spectrum with a cut-off power law, the best-fitting photon index is 1.40, normalization 9.57  |$\rm ph~cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}\,keV^{-1}\,sr^{-1}$| (at 1 keV), and cut-off energy 55 keV after correcting for the effects of the Earth albedo and atmospheric emission (which are significant in the HE band). Based on the best-fitting cut-off power law, we derived the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the DXRB. The shape of the SED is in general agreement with the published measurements, but the overall normalization is lower by varying amounts, except for the HEAO-1 result, with which our result is in good agreement. We continue our series of papers on intergalactic medium (IGM) tracers using quasi-stellar objects (QSOs), having examined gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and blazars in earlier studies. We have estimated the IGM properties of hydrogen column density (⁠|$\mathit {N}\small {\rm HXIGM}$|⁠), temperature, and metallicity using XMM–Newton QSO spectra over a large redshift range, with a collisional ionization equilibrium model for the ionized plasma. The |$\mathit {N}\small {\rm HXIGM}$| parameter results were robust with respect to intrinsic power laws, spectral counts, reflection hump, and soft excess features. There is scope for a luminosity bias given both luminosity and |$\mathit {N}\small {\rm HXIGM}$| scale with redshift, but we find this unlikely given the consistent IGM parameter results across the other tracer types reviewed. The impact of intervening high-column density absorbers was found to be minimal. The |$\mathit {N}\small {\rm HXIGM}$| from the QSO sample scales as (1 + z)1.5 ± 0.2. The mean hydrogen density at z = 0 is n 0 = (2.8 ± 0.3) × 10−7 cm−3, the mean IGM temperature over the full redshift range is log(T /K) =6.5 ± 0.1, and the mean metallicity is [ X /H] = −1.3 ± 0.1(Z ∼ 0.05). Aggregating with our previous GRB and blazar tracers, we conclude that we have provided evidence of the IGM contributing substantially and consistently to the total X-ray absorption seen in the spectra. A supernova remnant (SNR) candidate SRGe J0023+3625 = G116.6–26.1 was recently discovered in the SRG /eROSITA all-sky X-ray survey. This large (∼4° in diameter) SNR candidate lacks prominent counterparts in other bands. Here we report detection of radio emission from G116.6–26.1 in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Surveyr (LoTSS-DR2). Radio images show a shell-like structure coincident with the X-ray boundary of the SNR. The measured surface brightness of radio emission from this SNR is very low. Extrapolation of the observed surface brightness to 1 GHz places G116.6-26.1 well below other objects in the Σ– D diagram. We argue that the detected radio flux might be consistent with the minimal level expected in the van der Laan adiabatic compression model, provided that the volume emissivity of the halo gas in the lofar band is |${\sim}10^{-42}\, {\rm Wm^{-3}\,Hz^{-1}\,sr^{-1}}$|⁠. If true, this SNR can be considered as a prototypical example of an evolved SNR in the Milky Way halo. We analyse the aperiodic flaring features, also known as shots, observed in Cyg X-1 in the 0.1–80 keV energy band using a 6.39 ks simultaneous observation with AstroSat and Neutron star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER). We detect 49 simultaneous shots in the soft and hard X-ray bands with NICER and AstroSat -LAXPC, respectively. We observe the shot profile for the first time in soft X-rays (0.1–3 keV), which shows a spectral peak at ∼2 keV. Using time-averaged spectroscopy, we measured the truncation of the inner accretion disc at 6.7 ± 0.2 gravitational radii. The shot-phase-resolved spectroscopy allowed us to identify the origin of some of the brightest aperiodic peaks in the soft X-rays. We find that the accretion rate is consistent with a constant during the shots while the inner edge of the accretion disc moves inwards/outwards as these shots rise/decay. We present the identifications of a flux-limited sample of highly variable X-ray sources on long time-scales from the second catalogue of the XMM–Newton SLew survey (XMMSL2). The carefully constructed sample, comprising 265 sources (2.5 per cent) selected from the XMMSL2 clean catalogue, displayed X-ray variability of a factor of more than 10 in 0.2–2 keV compared to the ROSAT All Sky Survey. Of the sample sources, 94.3 per cent are identified. The identification procedure follows a series of cross-matches with astronomical data bases and multiwavelength catalogues to refine the source position and identify counterparts to the X-ray sources. Assignment of source type utilizes a combination of indicators including counterparts offset, parallax measurement, spectral colours, X-ray luminosity, and light-curve behaviour. We identified 40 per cent of the variables with stars, 10 per cent with accreting binaries, and at least 30.4 per cent with active galactic nuclei. The rest of the variables are identified as galaxies. It is found that the mean effective temperatures of the highly variable stars are lower than those of less variable stars. Our sample of highly variable AGN tend to have lower black hole masses, redshifts, and marginally lower soft X-ray luminosities compared to the less variable ones, while no difference was found in the Eddington ratio distributions. Five flaring events are tidal disruption events published previously. This study has significantly increased the number of variable sources in XMMSL2 with identifications and provides greater insight on the nature of many o f the sources, enabling further studies of highly variable X-ray sources. Because many of our X-ray telescopes are optimized towards observing faint sources, observations of bright sources like X-ray binaries in outburst are often affected by instrumental biases. These effects include dead time and photon pile-up, which can dramatically change the statistical inference of physical parameters from these observations. While dead time is difficult to take into account in a statistically consistent manner, simulating dead-time-affected data is often straightforward. This structure makes the issue of inferring physical properties from dead-time-affected observations fall into a class of problems common across many scientific disciplines. There is a growing number of methods to address them under the name of simulation-based inference (SBI), aided by new developments in density estimation and statistical machine learning. In this paper, we introduce SBI as a principled way to infer variability properties from dead-time-affected light curves. We use sequential neural posterior estimation to estimate the posterior probability for variability properties. We show that this method can recover variability parameters on simulated data even when dead time is variable, and present results of an application of this approach to NuSTAR observations of the galactic black hole X-ray binary GRS 1915+105. This paper presents the construction of the RapidXMM database that is available through the XMM-Newton Science Archive and offers access to upper limits and aperture photometry across the field of view of the XMM-Newton Pointed and Slew Survey observations. The feature of RapidXMM is speed. It enables the fast retrieval of X-ray upper limits and photometry products in three energy bands (0.2–2, 2–12, and 0.2–12 keV) for large numbers of input sky positions. This is accomplished using the Hierarchical Equal Area Iso Latitude pixelation of the sphere (HEALPix). The pre-calculated upper-limits and associated X-ray photometry products are reprojected into the HEALPix grid of cells before being ingested into the RapidXMM database. This results in tables of upper limits and aperture photometry within HEALPix cells of size ≈3 arcsec (Pointed observations) and 6 arcsec (Slew Survey). The database tables are indexed by the unique integer number of the HEALPix cells. This reduces spatial nearest-neighbour queries by sky position to an integer-matching exercise and significantly accelerates the retrieval of results. We describe in detail the processing steps that lead from the science products available in the XMM-Newton archive to a database optimized for sky queries. We also present two simple show-case applications of RapidXMM for scientific studies – searching for variable X-ray sources and stacking analysis of X-ray faint populations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The XXL Survey is the largest homogeneous survey carried out with XMM-Newton. Covering an area of 50 deg2, the survey contains several hundred galaxy clusters out to a redshift of ≈2, above an X-ray flux limit of ∼6 × 10−15 er g cm−2 s−1. The GAMA spectroscopic survey of ∼300 000 galaxies covers ≈286 deg2, down to an r-band magnitude of r < 19.8 mag. The region of overlap of these two surveys (covering 14.6 deg2) represents an ideal opportunity to study clusters selected via two independent selection criteria. Generating two independently selected samples of clusters, one drawn from XXL (spanning a redshift range 0.05 ≤ z ≤ 0.3) and another from GAMA (0.05 ≤ z ≤ 0.2), both spanning 0.2 ≲ M 500 ≲ 5 × 1014 M⊙, we investigate the relationship between X-ray luminosity and velocity dispersion (LX − σ v relation). Comparing the LX − σ v relation between the X-ray selected and optically selected samples, when not accounting for the X-ray selection, we find that the scatter of the X-ray selected sample is 2.7 times higher than the optically selected sample (at the 3.7σ level). Accounting for the X-ray selection to model the LX − σ v relation, we find that the difference in the scatter increases (with the X-ray selected sample having a scatter 3.4 times larger than the optically selected sample). Although the scatter of the optically selected sample is lower, we find 13 optically selected GAMA groups undetected in X-rays. Inspection of the difference in magnitude between the first and second brightest galaxies in the cluster, and a stacked X-ray image of these 13 groups, suggests that these are young systems still in the process of forming. The International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL), launched in 2002, continues its successful work in observing the sky at energies E > 20 keV. The legacy of the mission already includes a large number of discovered or previously poorly studied hard X-ray sources. The growing INTEGRAL archive allows one to conduct an all-sky survey including a number of deep extragalactic fields and the deepest ever hard X-ray survey of the Galaxy. Taking advantage of the data gathered over 17 yr with the IBIS coded-mask telescope of INTEGRAL , we conducted survey of hard X-ray sources, providing flux information from 17 to 290 keV. The catalogue includes 929 objects, 890 of which exceed a detection threshold of 4.5σ and the rest are detected at 4.0σ–4.5σ and belong to known catalogued hard X-ray sources. Among the identified sources of known or suspected nature, 376 are associated with the Galaxy and Magellanic clouds, including 145 low-mass and 115 high-mass X-ray binaries, 79 cataclysmic variables, and 37 of other types; and 440 are extragalactic, including 429 active galactic nuclei (AGNs), 2 ultra-luminous sources, 1 supernova (AT2018cow), and 8 galaxy clusters. 113 sources remain unclassified. 46 objects are detected in the hard X-ray band for the first time. The Log N -Log S distribution of 356 non-blazar AGNs is measured down to a flux of 2 × 10−12 erg s−1 cm−2 and can be described by a power law with a slope of 1.44 ± 0.09 and normalization 8 × 10−3 deg−2 at 10−11 erg s−1 cm−2. We present the results of a temporal and spectral analysis of the transient source ULX-4 in the galaxy M51. The data used were drawn from Chandra ,  XMM–Newton , and Swift-XRT archives, spanning the years 2000–2019.. The X-ray flux of the source is seen to vary by two orders of magnitudes within a month but a short-term variability was not observed over the time intervals of 100–2000 s in the 0.3–10 keV energy band. We find some evidence for the existence of bi-modality feature in the flux distribution of ULX-4. We identified two optical sources as possible counterparts within an error radius of 0 |${_{.}^{\prime\prime}}$| 18 at 95 |${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| confidence level for ULX-4 based on the archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) /ACS and HST /WFC3 data. Blackbody fits of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) indicate the spectral type to be B-type stars. One of these counterparts exhibits a low-amplitude optical periodicity of 264 ± 37 d in the F606W filter; if we assume this apparent periodicity is associated with the orbital motion of the donor, then it is more likely that the donor is a red supergiant satisfying the long periodicity and accretion via Roche lobe overflow. Consequently, the SED would then have to be interpreted as a superposition of emissions from a cold donor and a hot flow component, most likely from an accretion disc. If, on the other hand, the periodicity is superorbital in nature i.e. due to possible interactions of the compact object with a circumstellar disc, the donor could then be a Be/X star hosting a neutron star. Context. Serendipitous X-ray surveys have proven to be an efficient way to find rare objects, for example tidal disruption events, changing-look active galactic nuclei (AGN), binary quasars, ultraluminous X-ray sources, and intermediate mass black holes. With the advent of very large X-ray surveys, an automated classification of X-ray sources becomes increasingly valuable. Aims. This work proposes a revisited naive Bayes classification of the X-ray sources in the Swift-XRT and XMM-Newton catalogs into four classes – AGN, stars, X-ray binaries (XRBs), and cataclysmic variables (CVs) – based on their spatial, spectral, and timing properties and their multiwavelength counterparts. An outlier measure is used to identify objects of other natures. The classifier is optimized to maximize the classification performance of a chosen class (here XRBs), and it is adapted to data mining purposes. Methods. We augmented the X-ray catalogs with multiwavelength data, source class, and variability properties. We then built a reference sample of about 25 000 X-ray sources of known nature. From this sample, the distribution of each property was carefully estimated and taken as reference to assign probabilities of belonging to each class. The classification was then performed on the whole catalog, combining the information from each property. Results. Using the algorithm on the Swift reference sample, we retrieved 99%, 98%, 92%, and 34% of AGN, stars, XRBs, and CVs, respectively, and the false positive rates are 3%, 1%, 9%, and 15%. Similar results are obtained on XMM sources. When applied to a carefully selected test sample, representing 55% of the X-ray catalog, the classification gives consistent results in terms of distributions of source properties. A substantial fraction of sources not belonging to any class is efficiently retrieved using the outlier measure, as well as AGN and stars with properties deviating from the bulk of their class. Our algorithm is then compared to a random forest method; the two showed similar performances, but the algorithm presented in this paper improved insight into the grounds of each classification. Conclusions. This robust classification method can be tailored to include additional or different source classes and can be applied to other X-ray catalogs. The transparency of the classification compared to other methods makes it a useful tool in the search for homogeneous populations or rare source types, including multi-messenger events. Such a tool will be increasingly valuable with the development of surveys of unprecedented size, such as LSST, SKA, and Athena, and the search for counterparts of multi-messenger events. An empirical model is presented that links, for the first time, the demographics of active galactic nuclei (AGN) to their ensemble X-ray variability properties. Observations on the incidence of AGN in galaxies are combined with (i) models of the power spectrum density (PSD) of the flux variations of AGN and (ii) parametrizations of the black hole mass versus stellar mass scaling relation to predict the mean excess variance of active black hole populations in cosmological volumes. We show that the comparison of the model with observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance as a function of X-ray luminosity provides a handle on both the PSD models and the black hole mass versus stellar mass relation. We find strong evidence against a PSD model that is described by a broken power law and a constant overall normalization. Instead, our analysis indicates that the amplitude of the PSD depends on the physical properties of the accretion events, such as the Eddington ratio and/or the black hole mass. We also find that current observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance are consistent with the black hole mass versus stellar mass relation of local spheroids based on dynamically determined black hole masses. We also discuss future prospects of the proposed approach to jointly constrain the PSD of AGN and the black hole mass versus stellar mass relation as a function of redshift. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use Swift blazar spectra to estimate the key intergalactic medium (IGM) properties of hydrogen column density (⁠|$\mathit {N}\small {\rm HXIGM}$|⁠), metallicity, and temperature over a redshift range of 0.03 ≤ z ≤ 4.7, using a collisional ionization equilibrium model for the ionized plasma. We adopted a conservative approach to the blazar continuum model given its intrinsic variability and use a range of power-law models. We subjected our results to a number of tests and found that the |$\mathit {N}\small {\rm HXIGM}$| parameter was robust with respect to individual exposure data and co-added spectra for each source, and between Swift and XMM–Newton source data. We also found no relation between |$\mathit {N}\small {\rm HXIGM}$| and variations in source flux or intrinsic power laws. Though some objects may have a bulk Comptonization component that could mimic absorption, it did not alter our overall results. The |$\mathit {N}\small {\rm HXIGM}$| from the combined blazar sample scales as (1 + z)1.8 ± 0.2. The mean hydrogen density at z = 0 is n 0 = (3.2 ± 0.5) × 10−7 cm−3. The mean IGM temperature over the full redshift range is log(T /K) =6.1 ± 0.1, and the mean metallicity is [ X /H] = −1.62 ± 0.04(Z ∼ 0.02). When combining with the results with a gamma-ray burst (GRB) sample, we find the results are consistent over an extended redshift range of 0.03 ≤ z ≤ 6.3. Using our model for blazars and GRBs, we conclude that the IGM contributes substantially to the total absorption seen in both blazar and GRB spectra. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Charge exchange has been recognized as a primary source of soft X-ray emission in many astrophysical outflow environments, including cometary and planetary exospheres impacted by the solar wind. Some models have been set up by using different data collections of charge-exchange cross-sections. However, multiple-electron transfer has not been included in these models. In this paper, we set up a charge-exchange model with the inclusion of double-electron capture (DEC), and make a detailed investigation of this process on X-ray emissions of highly charged carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and neon ions by using available experimental cross-sections. We also study the effect of different n- selective cross-sections on soft X-ray emission by using available experimental n -distributions. This work reveals that DEC enhancement on line intensity is linearly proportional to the ratio of ion abundance in the solar wind. It is more obvious for soft X-rays from carbon ions (C4+) in collision with CO2, and the enhancement on line intensity can be up to 53 per cent with typical ion abundances [ Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE)] in the solar wind. The synthetic spectra with parameters from the Ulysses mission for the solar wind reveal velocity dependence, target dependence, as well as the non-negligible contribution from the DEC. We present results from a multiwavelength observation of Jupiter's northern aurorae, carried out simultaneously by XMM–Newton , the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and the Hisaki satellite in 2019 September. HST images captured dawn storms and injection events in the far-ultraviolet aurora several times during the observation period. Magnetic reconnection occurring in the middle magnetosphere caused by internal drivers is thought to start the production of those features. The field lines then dipolarize, which injects hot magnetospheric plasma from the reconnection site to enter the inner magnetosphere. Hisaki observed an impulsive brightening in the dawnside Io plasma torus (IPT) during the final appearance of the dawn storms and injection events, which is evidence that a large-scale plasma injection penetrated the central IPT between 6 and 9 R J (Jupiter radii). The extreme ultraviolet aurora brightened and XMM–Newton detected an increase in the hard X-ray aurora count rate, suggesting an increase in electron precipitation. The dawn storms and injections did not change the brightness of the soft X-ray aurora and they did not 'switch-on' its commonly observed quasi-periodic pulsations. Spectral analysis of the X-ray aurora suggests that the precipitating ions responsible for the soft X-ray aurora were iogenic and that a power-law continuum was needed to fit the hard X-ray part of the spectra. We report a discovery of a new X-ray-selected supernova remnant (SNR) candidate SRGe J0023+3625 = G116.6−26.1 found in the SRG /eROSITA all-sky survey. The source features a large angular extent (∼4° in diameter), nearly circular shape, and X-ray spectrum dominated by emission lines of helium- and hydrogen-like oxygen. It lacks bright counterparts of similar extent at other wavelengths which could be unequivocally associated with it. Given the relatively high Galactic latitude of the source, b  ≈ −26°, we interpret these observational properties as an indication of the off-disc location of this SNR candidate. Namely, we propose that this object originated from a Type Ia supernotva which exploded some 40 000 yr ago in the low density (⁠|$\sim 10^{-3}\, {\rm cm^{-3}}$|⁠) and hot (⁠|$\sim (1{-}2)\times 10^6\, {\rm K}$|⁠) gas of the Milky Way halo at a distance of ∼3 kpc from the Sun. The low density of the halo gas implies that the cooling and collisional ionization equilibrium (CEI) time-scales downstream of the forward shock are much longer than the age of the SNR. This results in a relatively soft spectrum, reflecting pre-shock ionization state of the gas, and strong boost in the plasma emissivity (compared to CEI) due to enhanced collisional excitation through the increased electron temperature. If confirmed, such a rare object would provide us with a unique ' in situ ' probe of physical conditions (density, temperature and metallicity) near the interface between the Milky Way's disc and the halo. We present an investigation of the interdependence of the optical-to-X-ray spectral slope (αox), the  He  ii equivalent-width (EW), and the monochromatic luminosity at 2500 Å (L 2500). The values of αox and  He  ii EW are indicators of the strength/shape of the quasar ionizing continuum, from the ultraviolet (UV; 1500–2500 Å), through the extreme ultraviolet (EUV; 300–50 Å), to the  X-ray (2 keV) regime. For this investigation, we measure the  He  ii EW of 206 radioquiet quasars devoid of broad absorption lines that have high-quality spectral observations of the UV and 2 keV X-rays. The sample spans wide redshift (≈0.13–3.5) and luminosity (log(L 2500) ≈ 29.2–32.5 erg s−1 Hz−1) ranges. We recover the well-known αox– L 2500 and  He  ii EW– L 2500 anticorrelations, and we find a similarly strong correlation between αox and  He  ii EW, and thus the overall spectral shape from the UV, through the EUV, to the  X-ray regime is largely set by luminosity. A significant αox– He  ii EW correlation remains after removing the contribution of L 2500 from each quantity, and thus the emission in the EUV and the X-rays are also directly tied. This set of relations is surprising, since the UV, EUV, and  X-ray emission are expected to be formed in three physically distinct regions. Our results indicate the presence of a redshift-independent physical mechanism that couples the continuum emission from these three different regions, and thus controls the overall continuum shape from the UV to the  X-ray regime. Recent observations have revealed interstellar features that apparently connect energetic activity in the central region of our Galaxy to its halo. The nature of these features, however, remains largely uncertain. We present a Chandra mapping of the central 2° × 4° field of the Galaxy, revealing a complex of X-ray-emitting threads plus plume-like structures emerging from the Galactic Centre (GC). This mapping shows that the northern plume or fountain is offset from a well-known radio lobe (or the GCL), which however may represent a foreground H  ii region, and that the southern plume is well wrapped by a corresponding radio lobe recently discovered by MeerKAT. In particular, we find that a distinct X-ray thread, G0.17−0.41, is embedded well within a non-thermal radio filament, which is locally inflated. This thread with a width of ∼1.6 arcsec (FWHM) is ∼2.6 arcmin or 6 pc long at the distance of the GC and has a spectrum that can be characterized by a power law or an optically-thin thermal plasma with temperature ≳ 3 keV. The X-ray-emitting material is likely confined within a strand of magnetic field with its strength ≳ 1 mG, not unusual in such radio filaments. These morphological and spectral properties of the radio/X-ray association suggest that magnetic field re-connection is the energy source. Such re-connection events are probably common when flux tubes of antiparallel magnetic fields collide and/or become twisted in and around the diffuse X-ray plumes, representing blowout superbubbles driven by young massive stellar clusters in the GC. The understanding of the process, theoretically predicted in analog to solar flares, can have strong implications for the study of interstellar hot plasma heating, cosmic ray acceleration and turbulence. X-ray observations provide a potentially powerful tool to study starburst feedback. The analysis and interpretation of such observations remain challenging, however, due to various complications, including the non-isothermality of the diffuse hot plasma and the inhomogeneity of the foreground absorption. We here illustrate such complications and a way to mitigate their effects by presenting an X-ray spectroscopy of the 30 Doradus nebula in the Large Magellanic Clouds, based on a 100 ks Suzaku observation. We measure the thermal and chemical properties of the hot plasma and quantitatively confront them with the feedback expected from embedded massive stars. We find that our spatially resolved measurements can be well reproduced by a global modelling of the nebula with a lognormal temperature distribution of the plasma emission measure and a lognormal foreground absorption distribution. The metal abundances and total mass of the plasma are consistent with the chemically enriched mass ejection expected from the central OB association and a |$\sim 55{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| mass-loading from the ambient medium. The total thermal energy of the plasma is smaller than what is expected from a simple superbubble model, demonstrating that important channels of energy loss are not accounted for. Our analysis indeed shows tentative evidence for a diffuse non-thermal X-ray component, indicating that cosmic ray acceleration needs to be considered in such a young starburst region. Finally, we suggest that the lognormal modelling may be suitable for the X-ray spectral analysis of other giant H  ii regions, especially when spatially resolved spectroscopy is not practical. Accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs), also known as active galactic nuclei (AGN), are generally surrounded by large amounts of gas and dust. This surrounding material reprocesses the primary X-ray emission produced close to the SMBH and gives rise to several components in the broadband X-ray spectra of AGN, including a power-law possibly associated with Thomson-scattered radiation. In this work, we study the properties of this scattered component for a sample of 386 hard-X-ray-selected, nearby (⁠|$z\sim0.03$|⁠) obscured AGN from the 70-month Swift /BAT catalogue. We investigate how the fraction of Thomson-scattered radiation correlates with different physical properties of AGN, such as line-of-sight column density, X-ray luminosity, black hole mass, and Eddington ratio. We find a significant negative correlation between the scattering fraction and the column density. Based on a large number of spectral simulations, we exclude the possibility that this anticorrelation is due to degeneracies between the parameters. The negative correlation also persists when considering different ranges of luminosity, black hole mass, and Eddington ratio. We discuss how this correlation might be either due to the angle dependence of the Thomson cross-section or to more obscured sources having a higher covering factor of the torus. We also find a positive correlation between the scattering fraction and the ratio of [O  iii ] λ5007 to X-ray luminosity. This result is consistent with previous studies and suggests that the Thomson-scattered component is associated with the narrow-line region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present results from a 20 ks XMM–Newton director's discretionary time observation of the radio-loud quasar CFHQS J142952 + 544717 at z  = 6.18, whose extreme X-ray luminosity was recently revealed by the SRG / eROSITA telescope in the course of its first all-sky survey. The quasar has been confidently detected with a total of ∼1400 net counts in the 0.2–10 keV energy band (1.4–72 keV in the object's rest frame). Its measured spectrum is unusually soft and can be described by an absorbed power-law model with a photon index of Γ = 2.5 ± 0.2. There are no signs of a high-energy cut-off or reflected component, with a 90 per cent upper limit on the fluorescence iron K α equivalent width of ≈290 eV and the corresponding upper limit on the iron K-edge absorption depth of 0.6. We have detected, at the >95 per cent confidence level, an excess absorption above the Galactic value, corresponding to a column density N H = 3 ± 2 × 1022 cm−2 of material located at z  = 6.18. The intrinsic luminosity of CFHQS J142952 + 544717 in the 1.4–72 keV energy band is found to be |$5.5_{-0.6}^{+0.8} \times 10^{46}$|  erg s−1. We did not detect statistically significant flux changes between two SRG scans and the XMM–Newton observation, spanning over ∼7.5 months, implying that the quasar remained at this extremely high-luminosity level for at least a month in its rest frame. We put forward the hypothesis that the extreme X-ray properties of CFHQS J142952 + 544717 are associated with inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background photons (at z  = 6.18) in its relativistic jets. Only a handful of supernovae (SNe) have been studied in multiwavelengths from the radio to X-rays, starting a few days after the explosion. The early detection and classification of the nearby Type IIb SN 2011dh/PTF 11eon in M51 provides a unique opportunity to conduct such observations. We present detailed data obtained at one of the youngest phase ever of a core-collapse SN (days 3-12 after the explosion) in the radio, millimetre and X-rays; when combined with optical data, this allows us to explore the early evolution of the SN blast wave and its surroundings. Our analysis shows that the expanding SN shock wave does not exhibit equipartition (εe/εB ~ 1000), and is expanding into circumstellar material that is consistent with a density profile falling like R-2. Within modelling uncertainties we find an average velocity of the fast parts of the ejecta of 15 000 ± 1800 km s-1, contrary to previous analysis. This velocity places SN 2011dh in an intermediate blast wave regime between the previously defined compact and extended SN Type IIb subtypes. Our results highlight the importance of early (~1 d) high-frequency observations of future events. We probe the formation scenarios and the active galactic nucleus (AGN) occupation fraction of ultradiffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the nearby Coma cluster by utilizing XMM–Newton observations of 779 out of 854 UDG candidates identified by the Subaru survey. Their origin is probed by measuring the dark matter halo mass of the stacked sample of UDGs and the population of low-mass X-ray binaries residing in globular clusters. Our measurements suggest that the average UDG population does not have a substantial amount of hot gas or a large number of globular clusters. This supports the formation scenario, in which UDGs are puffed-up dwarf galaxies, agreeing with that obtained for 404 Coma cluster UDGs using Chandra. We also determine AGN occupation fraction of UDGs by cross-correlating the position of UDGs with the detected point sources in Coma. We detect three X-ray sources with detection significance σ ≥ 5 that could be off-centre AGNs within 5 arcsec from the centre of the UDG 317, UDG 432, and UDG 535. We identify an optical counterpart for the X-ray source associated with the UDG 317, suggesting that this source is more likely an off-centre AGN. Based on the current data, however, we cannot conclusively constrain whether the detected AGN is residing in the Coma cluster or not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We use gamma-ray burst (GRB) spectra total continuum absorption to estimate the key intergalactic medium (IGM) properties of hydrogen column density (⁠|$\mathit {N}_{\mathrm{HXIGM}}$|⁠), metallicity, temperature, and ionization parameter over a redshift range of 1.6 ≤ z ≤ 6.3, using photoionization equilibrium (PIE) and collisional ionization equilibrium (CIE) models for the ionized plasma. We use more realistic host metallicity, dust corrected where available, in generating the host absorption model, assuming that the host intrinsic hydrogen column density is equal to the measured ionization corrected intrinsic neutral column from UV spectra (⁠|${\it N}_{\mathrm{H}\,{\small I,IC}}$|⁠). We find that the IGM property results are similar, regardless of whether the model assumes all PIE or CIE. The |$\mathit {N}_{\mathrm{HXIGM}}$| scales as (1 + z)1.0–1.9, with equivalent hydrogen mean density at z  = 0 of |$n_0 = 1.8^{+1.5}_{-1.2} \times 10^{-7}$| cm−3. The metallicity ranges from |$\sim 0.1\, \mathrm{Z}_{\odot }$| at redshift z ∼ 2 to |$\sim 0.001\, \mathrm{Z}_{\odot }$| at redshift z > 4. The PIE model implies a less rapid decline in average metallicity with redshift compared to CIE. Under CIE, the temperature ranges between 5.0 < log (T /K) < 7.1. For PIE the ionization parameter ranges between 0.1 < log (ξ) < 2.9. Using our model, we conclude that the IGM contributes substantially to the total absorption seen in GRB spectra and that this contribution rises with redshift, explaining why the hydrogen column density inferred from X-rays is substantially in excess of the intrinsic host contribution measured in UV.
