75. Representing Fertility in Mo Yan’s Frog and Xue Xiaolu’s Finding Mr. Right

Abstract

In this study I explore the changing representation of the pregnant body in two recent Chinese texts. Building on existing scholarship, I relate the fictional representation of maternity in Mo Yan’s novel "Frog" (2009) and Xue Xiaolu’s film "Finding Mr Right" (2013) to three consolidating discourses of reform, namely the Chinese family planning program, Chinese feminism, and Chinese globalization. By interrogating the highly symbolic depictions of pregnant women in these texts I meaningfully expand our understanding of the impact of these discourses through various scales and dimensionalities, including the generic, the social and the global. Approaching my topic in an interdisciplinary way, I disturb dualistic arguments that locate women in opposition to the political and reinstate everyday life as an arena of female agency as well as oppression. The introduction consists of a brief history of the implementation of the one-child policy in PRC and an analysis of the allegorical function of pregnancy and childbirth in Seventeen Year films. The main body of the thesis comprises close readings of two fictional texts that take pregnancy and gendered fertility politics as their theme. Written by the first Chinese writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, "Frog" (translated into English in 2015) tells the story of a female obstetrician charged with implementing the one-child policy. Told from the perspective of an unreliable male narrator, the novel deploys techniques of satire and the grotesque. The story arcs across a 60-year history of birth control and mandatory abortion to end in the era of corporate baby farms. The second text is the Hollywood-style comedy "Finding Mr. Right" (2013), which concerns the idle and vain mistress of a mainland tycoon who enters the US to secure American citizenship for the baby she is carrying. The film’s focus on Chinese birth tourism works in tandem with its representation of the mother-to-be as a transnational female consumer who has yet to learn the value of love or money. I consider how the film links transnational practices with neoliberal ideology via a sentimental story in which heterosexual romance is suppressed in favour of female independence and entrepreneurship. I suggest that the medium of comedy allows the film’s writer and director to approach the feminist issues of female sexual citizenship and Chinese fertility politics through the sanctioned lens of maternity, a theme central to Chinese cinema since the Seventeen Year films discussed in the introduction. By comparing "Frog" and "Finding Mr Right", I am able to address the complex history and legacy of China’s one-child policy at the moment of its repeal.

Abstract

Abstract: Semiconductor photocatalysts with suitable band gap for fair response to visible light and efficient separation of electron-hole pairs, are the key to practical application of photocatalytic technology. Magnetically separable hierarchical ZnFe2O4/g-C3N4 composite photocatalysts were prepared by a facile solvothermal method combined with a subsequent annealing process. The composite microspheres were composed of ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles, whose diameter was restricted due to the confined space effect from g-C3N4 nanosheets. ZnFe2O4/g-C3N4 heterojunction structures led to the improvement of the efficiency for photodegrading methylene blue and rhodamine B under visible light, where the kinetic constant over ZnFe2O4/CN-150 photocatalyst was more than ten times larger than that over pure ZnFe2O4. The photogenerated electrons from g-C3N4 surfaces could easily migrate to ZnFe2O4, leading to efficient separation of electron-hole pairs. Also, the composite photocatalyst possessed a chemical stability against photocorrosion and a magnetic property, which made it magnetically separable and reusable conveniently.Graphical Abstract: [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In recent years, materials with extraordinary hollow structures have been widely studied because of their enormous potential in many research fields such as in advanced energy conversion and storage. The design and synthesis of an innovative hollow structure via a facile method is the key to enhance the performance of advanced energy materials in various applications. In this study, we report novel hollow passion fruit-like Bi@BiFe-glycolate microspheres (3.5 μm), which are constructed using BiFe-glycolate nanosheets and Bi nanospheres. They are designed and synthesized via a facile one-pot solvothermal method, and a mechanism of “spit and swallow” process is presented to describe the reaction. Moreover, the Bi2O3/BiFeO3 photocatalyst obtained by annealing the Bi@BiFe-glycolate precursors under an air atmosphere exhibits enhanced photocatalytic activity and cycling stability under visible light irradiation due to its special morphology and band structure. The photocatalyst can also be recycled conveniently owing to its magnetic properties. In general, this study focuses on both nanomaterial synthetic methods and photocatalytic performance improvement. Abstract

This is the first study to comprehensively analyze the toxicity of Al coagulants, which are widely present in the effluent of water treatment plants and in natural water in the form of polynuclear Al (e.g., nano-Al13) and mononuclear Al (Alm), on the siphoning efficiency, antioxidant defense system and histological alterations of Corbicula fluminea. The results showed that Almhad a stronger inhibitory effect on siphoning than the nano-Al13coagulant. For all the selected enzyme indexes, induction by nano-Al13was more intense in the digestive gland, while that by Almwas more obvious in the gills. Either Almor nano-Al13can enlarge the tubule lumen and reduce the thickness of the epithelia of digestive tubules, but nano-Al13caused more severe damage to the cellular membrane. Inferred from the bright clusters observed by microscopy, granular nano-Al13enters the digestive gland mainly viaswallowing, while gill filtration is another method by which the ionic Almcan enter the clam body. The presence of nano-Al13and inhibition of enzymes associated with GSH, such as GST and GR, led to the damage of cell membranes. For both Al coagulants, the influence of higher concentrations is more negative. As an effective coagulant, the toxicity of PACl cannot be ignored.

Abstract

Nano-Al13clusters have the potential to form and remain in a coagulation process, but cannot be directly traced by traditional instrumental techniques in real time since there is only a trace concentration after being dosed. In this study, an optimized electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) method was introduced for the first time to determine the coagulation pathways when using AlCl3(monomeric Al, i.e., Alm) and polymeric aluminum chloride (PACl) as coagulants. The transformation mechanisms of Al clusters, including Alm, oligomeric Al (Alo), Al13and transient Al (Alts), were clearly elucidated using statistical analysis and a real-time tracking experiment. The nano-Al13clusters could be detected in the coagulation batch experiment conducted using AlCl3as the coagulant. Moreover, using a statistical method, the Al13clusters in the PACl coagulant and the Al13clusters formed by AlCl3coagulation were confirmed to be an efficient coagulant species. In the real-time tracking experiments, the reversible transformations among Alm, Alo, Al13and Altsclusters were instantly observed after the addition of the coagulant (i.e., during the coagulation process). In the subsequent process (i.e., the flocculation process), only floc aggregation occurred, and no obvious transformations among the four types of Al clusters were observed. The continuous aggregation and increase in floc were mainly attributed to particle coalescence with the Al clusters. The mineral–water interface was inferred to favor the transformation of Almand Aloaggregates into Al13as well as the reverse reaction (e.g., the degradation of Al13).
