Since collectivities construct morality codes through public argument, maintaining fair deliberation is a great concern for rhetorical scholars. However society's increasing reliance on technical knowledge as a basis for deciding what 'ought to be' has led to the exclusion of substantive community values from public argument. Since the connection &rhetoric to values has been a longstanding scholarly struggle, a variety of rhetoricians have identified modes of argument that ensure their incorporation. In this paper, I examine the possibility of Burke's comic strategies for this purpose through a study of Lisa Crawford's discourse, an activist at the Feed Material Production Center., THE ENACTMENT AND preservation of open public deliberation greatly concerns rhetorical scholars. Analysis of the 1992 Presidential debates showed significant differences between candidates across all debates. There was also a difference in the incidence of humor among the three debates. It was noted that the effects of a third party candidate and alternative debate formats need further research.

The sayings Niccolo Machiavelli attributed to the Renaissance Tuscan ruler in 'La vita di Castruccio Castracani da Lucca' were largely taken from Diogenes Laertius' 'Lives of the Philosophers,' but Machiavelli wanted the cruelty of Castruccio's wit to symbolize the quality of command essential to a ruler. Miguel Cervantes used the character of Sancho Panza to show how an otherwise ignorant person could govern effectively.

Presidents of the United States have utilized humor to bolster support for their policies and to diminish opposition to their election or re-election. Although most Chief Executives have displayed some ready wit, perhaps a dozen have been noted for their sense of humor. This study concentrates on the humorous responses to challenging situations and exacting questions from reporters by twelve of the Presidents and one First Lady from 1861 to the present time. The most extensive examination is given to the remarks of Abraham Lincoln, best known among all U.S. Presidents as a humorous storyteller, with each anecdote drawing a strong moral or making clear a crucial point of view. The confrontations that provoked the humorous responses herein cited range from pressure to negotiate a stalemate for the Civil War to rejecting office seekers and narrow-issue lobbyists with a minimum of negativism. Such challenges from the 1860s through the turn of the century and the two World Wars find parallels in the 1980s. Some basic challenges confronting a President recur through the decades.

The article examines the existing relationship between humor and politics. The presence of humor in political speeches especially in a democratic society in practice today is very important to rouse olitcal interest and convey the message in a subtle, entertaining way.
