Reports that summary scores for behaviors rated on Bayley's Infant Behavior Record were obtained by summing sequential ratings for same-sex twins participating in a longitudinal study. Eleven statistical programs have been developed for use with heart rate data, and seven of the programs are illustrated in this paper. The programs make use of ANOVA and trend analysis to isolate the components of polyphasic response curves. The analysis can determine whether there are systematic changes over trials in the shape and phasing of the response curves, and whether there are significant differences between groups in the size of the trend components. Analysis-of-variance models are presented for use with autonomic data. Applica-tions are illustrated for experiments where either single variable or multiple variable autonomic recordings are obtained. The analysis provides a test of significance for both transient responses to a stimulus and the more sustained effects that persist for some time. Consistency and stability of idiosyncratic reaction patterns are expressed by intraclass correlation coefficients. Multiple group comparisons are suggested as a method of evaluating differential reaction patterns induced by separate stressors. Three independent dimensions of autonomic activity are isolated by analysis of variance: sustained activity, reactivity, and non- specific variability. Individual Ss can be assigned scores on each dimension, and these scores can be processed by multiple regression procedures to predict Ss' performance on other behavioral tasks or personality scales. There has been a concerted attempt on the part of personality theorists to develop systems in which behavior is analyzed as a joint function of the particular stimulus conditions under which the individual operates and intrapersonal variables. In the present experiment, the predictions concern interactions between intrapersonal variables and the experimentally contrived situation in which the individual is placed. The intrapersonal variables in this case refer to processes that mediate the detection and interpretation ion of interpersonal disagreement. Previous studies have used the conformity situation to create circumstances of interpersonal disagreement. In one, for example, subject (S) was required to report how many metronome clicks he heard after having been exposed to a set of spurious judgments reported by other members of the group. Among those subjects who yielded to the group judgment, two discrete patterns of yielding were noted. In one case, S yielded whenever large differences in judgment were evident, because he wanted to avoid alienating himself from the group S also revealed in another situation that his self evaluation was markedly influenced by how much he liked the person who disagreed with him.
