Abstract: We report the discovery of an extremely curved jet in the high frequency peaking GPS quasar PKS 2136+141. Our multi-frequency VLBA images show a bending jet making a turn-around of 210 degrees on the plane of the sky, which is, to our knowledge, the largest ever observed change in a structural position angle of an extragalactic jet. Images taken at six different frequencies, from 2 to 43 GHz, beautifully reveal a spiral-like trajectory. We discuss possibilities to constrain the 3-D geometry of the source and suggest that it could be used as a testbed for models describing the bending of the relativistic jets., Comment: 4 pages. 3 figures. Abstract: The variety of isotopes in cosmic rays allows us to study different aspects of the processes that cosmic rays undergo between the time they are produced and the time of their arrival in the heliosphere. In this paper, we present measurements of the isotopic ratios 2H/4He, 3He/4He, 6Li/7Li, 7Be/(9Be+10Be), and 10B/11B in the range 0.2–1.4 GeV of kinetic energy per nucleon. The measurements are based on the data collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, AMS-01, during the STS-91 flight in 1998 June.

Abstract: Measurement of the chemical and isotopic composition of cosmic rays is essential for the precise understanding of their propagation in the galaxy. While the model parameters are mainly determined using the B/C ratio, the study of extended sets of ratios can provide stronger constraints on the propagation models. In this paper, the relative abundances of light-nuclei lithium, beryllium, boron, and carbon are presented. The secondary-to-primary ratios Li/C, Be/C, and B/C have been measured in the kinetic energy range 0.35-45 GeV nucleon-1. The isotopic ratio 7Li/6Li is also determined in the magnetic rigidity interval 2.5-6.3 GV. The secondary-to-secondary ratios Li/Be, Li/B, and Be/B are also reported. These measurements are based on the data collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer AMS-01 during the STS-91 space shuttle flight in 1998 June. Our experimental results are in substantial agreement with other measurements, where they exist. We describe our light-nuclei data with a diffusive-reacceleration model. A 10%-15% overproduction of Be is found in the model predictions and can be attributed to uncertainties in the production cross-section data. © 2010. The American Astronomical Society.

Abstract: According to the cold dark matter scenario, a large number of dark subhalos should be located within the halo of each Milky-way sized galaxy. One promising possibility for detecting such subhalos is to try to observe their gravitational lensing effects on background sources. Dark matter subhalos in the 10^6 -- 1010 Mȯ mass range should cause strong gravitational lensing on the (sub)milliarcsecond scales, which can be observed only using space VLBI. We study the feasibility of a strong-lensing detection of dark subhalos by deriving the image separations expected for density profiles favoured by current simulations and comparing it to the angular resolution of both existing and upcoming observational facilities. We show that the detection of subhalos is likely much more difficult than suggested in previous studies, due to the smaller image separations predicted for subhalo density profiles that are more realistic than the singular isothermal sphere models often adopted.

Abstract: The cold dark matter scenario predicts that a large number of dark subhalos should be located within the halo of each Milky Way-sized galaxy. We find that the image separations produced are very sensitive to the exact subhalo density profile assumed, but in all cases they are considerably smaller than previous estimates based on the premise that subhalos can be approximated by singular isothermal spheres. Only the most optimistic subhalo models produce image separations that would be detectable with current technology, and many models produce image separations that will remain unresolved with all telescopes expected to become available in the foreseeable future. Detections of dark subhalos through image-splitting effects will therefore be far more challenging than currently believed, albeit not necessarily impossible.

Abstract: In 1997 February, the Japanese radio astronomy satellite HALCA was launched to provide the space-bourne element for the VLBI Space Observatory Program (VSOP) mission. Approximately 25% of the mission time was dedicated to the VSOP survey of bright compact active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at 5 GHz. This paper, the fifth in the series, presents images and models for the remaining 140 sources not included in the third paper in the series, which contained 102 sources. For most sources, the plots of the (u, v) coverage, the visibility amplitude versus (u, v) distance, and the high-resolution image are presented. Model fit parameters to the major radio components are determined, and the brightness temperature of the core component for each source is calculated. The brightness temperature distributions for all of the sources in the VSOP AGN survey are discussed.

Abstract: This paper represents the work of several years of observation of CTA 102 with both single dish telescopes and interferometric arrays, covering wavelengths from 1.2 cm to 1.3 mm. The resolution of the maps covers an order of magnitude from 0.5 mas to 50 μas. The images presented demonstrate the rapid structural changes in this source. These rapid structural changes correlates with the outbursts seen in the total flux, turnover frequency and in the spectral index. We have calculated the Brightness Temperatures of the components (TB ) directly from the determined component sizes and also using the logarithmic variability amplitudes and timescales to calculate the TB s. Both the methods yielded measurements of source frame T Bs no higher than ∼a few × 10 12 K. We find that the observed average proper motion is 0.4 0.07 mas/yr, which corresponds to an apparent transverse velocity of 11 ± 2 c., Copyright © 2003 EDP Sciences. Abstract: The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a large acceptance (0.65 sr m(2)) detector designed to operate in the International Space Station (ISS) for three years. The purposes of the experiment are to search for cosmic antimatter and dark matter and to study the composition and energy spectrum of the primary cosmic rays. A "scated-down" version has been flown on the Space Shuttle Discovery for 10 days in June 1998. The complete AMS is programmed for installation on the ISS in October 2003 for an operational period of 3 yr. Abstract: The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) was flown on the space shuttle Discovery during flight STS-91 (June 1998) in a 51.7 deg orbit at altitudes between 320 and 390 km. A search for antihelium nuclei in the rigidity range 1–140 GV was performed. No antihelium nuclei were detected at any rigidity. An upper limit on the flux ratio of antihelium to helium of < 1.1×10^−6 was obtained. The high energy proton, electron, positron, helium, antiproton and deuterium spectra were accurately measured. For each particle and nuclei two distinct spectra were observed: a higher energy spectrum and a substantial second spectrum. Positrons in the second spectrum were found to be much more abundant than electrons. Tracing particles from the second spectra shows that most of them travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field, and that the positive particles (p and e+) and negative ones (e−) originate from two complementary geographic regions. The second helium spectrum flux over the energy range 0.1–1.2 GeV/nucleon was measured to be (6.3 ± 0.9) × 10^−3(m^2 s sr)^−1. Over 90 percent of the helium flux was determined to be 3He at the 90% confidence level

Abstract: The helium spectrum from 0.1 to 100 GeV/nucleon was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at altitudes near 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a second helium spectrum was observed. In the second helium spectra over the energy range 0.1 to 1.2 GeV/nucleon the flux was measured to be (6.3±0.9)×10−3 (m2 sec sr)−1 and more than ninety percent of the helium was determined to be 3He (at the 90% CL). Tracing helium from the second spectrum shows that about half of the 3He travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field and that they originate from restricted geographic regions similar to protons and positrons.

Abstract: The lepton spectra in the kinetic energy ranges 0.2 to 40 GeV for e− and 0.2 to 3 GeV for e+ were measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS–91 at altitudes near 380 km. From the origin of the leptons two distinct spectra were observed: a higher energy spectrum and a substantial second spectrum with positrons much more abundant than electrons. Tracing leptons from the second spectra shows that most of these leptons travel for an extended period of time in the geomagnetic field and that the e+ and e− originate from two complementary geographic regions.

Abstract: The proton spectrum in the kinetic energy range 0.1 to 200 GeV was measured by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) during space shuttle flight STS-91 at an altitude of 380 km. Above the geomagnetic cutoff the observed spectrum is parameterized by a power law. Below the geomagnetic cutoff a substantial second spectrum was observed concentrated at equatorial latitudes with a flux ∼70 m−2 s−1 sr−1. Most of these second spectrum protons follow a complicated trajectory and originate from a restricted geographic region.

Abstract: Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (BSCF) with the cubic perovskite structure is known to be metastable at low temperature under an oxidizing atmosphere. Here, the thermal and chemical expansion of BSCF were studied by in situ high temperature powder X-ray diffraction and thermo-gravimetrical analysis (TGA) in partial pressure of oxygen ranging from an inert atmosphere (∼10−4 bar) to 10 bar O2. The BSCF powder, heat treated at 1000 °C and quenched to ambient temperature prior to the analysis, was shown to oxidize under an oxidizing atmosphere before thermal reduction took place. With decreasing partial pressure of oxygen the initial oxidation was suppressed and only reduction of Co/Fe and loss of oxygen were observed under an inert atmosphere. The thermal expansion of BSCF under different atmospheres was determined from the thermal evolution of the cubic unit cell parameter, demonstrating that the thermal expansion of BSCF depends on the atmosphere. Chemical expansion of BSCF was also estimated based on the diffraction data and thermo-gravimetrical analysis. A hexagonal perovskite phase, coexisting with the cubic BSCF polymorph, was observed to be formed above 600 °C during heating. The phase separation leading to the formation of the hexagonal polymorph was driven by oxidation, and the unit cell of the cubic BSCF was shown to decrease with increasing amounts of the hexagonal phase. The hexagonal phase disappeared upon further heating, accompanied with an expansion of the unit cell of the cubic BSCF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: We observed the blazar 0716+714with the VLBA during its active state in 2003–2004. In this paper we discuss multi-frequency analysis of the inner jet (first 1 mas) kinematics. The unprecedentedly dense time sampling allows us to trace jet components without misidentification and to calculate the component speeds with good accuracy. In the smooth superluminal jet we were able to identify and track three components over time moving outwards with relatively high apparent superluminal speeds (8.5–19.4 c), which contradicts the hypothesis of a stationary oscillating jet in this source. Component ejections occur at a relatively high rate (once in two months), and they are accompanied by mm-continuum outbursts. Superluminal jet components move along wiggling trajectories, which is an indication of actual helical motion. Fast proper motion and rapid decay of the components suggest that this source should be observed with the VLBI at a rate of at least once in one or two months in order to trace superluminal jet components without confusion.
