A natural hazard-related disaster event often causes a series of secondary disasters, forming a disaster chain. Modeling the evolution of disaster chains in multi-hazard scenarios is crucial for risk governance and urban resilience. However, existing multi-hazard models are limited by complex model design and fixed disaster types, making it impossible to ensure flexible reactions to complex and diverse scenarios. This study presents a disaster management system for disaster model service chain (DMSC) to implement interoperable multi-hazard modeling. To achieve efficient model interaction in the DMSC, a management module is designed to normalize heterogeneous single-hazard models based on disaster system theory and the Open Geospatial Consortium standards, enabling them to be accessible, reusable, and interoperable. The normalized models are then adaptively orchestrated through an orchestration module to establish optimal executable DMSCs for different multi-hazard scenarios. Taking an earthquake disaster chain as a case study, we demonstrate that the disaster management system shows stable and flexible performance for multi-hazard modeling.

By comparing their timing and decision-making, we can understand why Webvan failed while Miss Fresh succeeded.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is considered the best treatment for sequelae of suppurative hip arthritis, but such patients are more likely to have occult infection and therefore to suffer post-operative periprosthetic joint infection. Our study examined (1) the occult infection rate among patients with sequelae of suppurative hip arthritis, and whether (2) neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), or fibrinogen levels can be used to screen such patients for occult infection before THA.We retrospectively enrolled 428 patients who underwent primary THA at our hospital between 2010 and 2021, of whom 31 had occult infection and 397 did not. The maximum sensitivity and specificity were determined for the three indicators using receiver operating characteristic curves, and positive and negative predictive values were calculated.Patients with occult infection showed significantly higher erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen than those without occult infection. The various potential indicators gave the following areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves: ESR, 0.586; CRP, 0.599; interleukin-6, 0.651; NLR, 0.506; MLR, 0.600; and fibrinogen, 0.589. Sensitivity and specificity were as follows: ESR, 30.8% and 92.5%; CRP, 50.0% and 70.2%; interleukin-6, 57.7% and 67.5%; NLR, 46.7% and 62.9%; MLR, 60.0% and 61.7%; and fibrinogen, 43.3% and 81.7%.The rate of occult infection was 7.24% among our patients. ESR, NLR, MLR, and levels of CRP, interleukin-6, and fibrinogen may be unreliable for screening such patients for occult infection before THA according to sensitivity and specificity.

Based on the projections of three shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs) scenarios of three climate models of CMIP6, this study analyzed the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) to understand the future meteorological dryness/wetness changes in the Poyang Lake basin (PLB) from 2021 to 2100. The effect of temperature change on the dryness and wetness variation was explored by comparing the trends of SPEI and standardized precipitation index (SPI) at multiple-time scales and different SSPs scenarios. The results indicate that the frequency of drought events may increase by 1.1~3.8% than the historical period in the three scenarios, and they may be higher than that of wetness events in the future of this century. Cumulative months of drought events are higher in most decades than the wetness events, and especially in the 2090s. A total of 43 months may suffer drought events in the 2090s under the SSP585 scenario, which is more than twice the wetness events. With the enhanced concentration of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, both the frequency of droughts and the proportion of extreme droughts show a significant increasing trend at 99% confidence in PLB. The spatial distribution of net precipitation is generally in the southwest–northeast pattern, yet it is still in different values in most scenarios; thus, the uncertainty of dryness/wetness spatial conditions should be considered. The SPI detects more wetness events and a more intensive wetting trend, while the SPEI shows the opposite. The difference between SPI and SPEI gradually increases with GHG emission concentration, and may even lead to contrary conclusion in the last two decades at a 48-month scale under the SSP245 and 585 scenarios, indicating the unneglectable impact of increasing temperature and evapotranspiration on the dryness/wetness conditions in the future. The research results can help to predict the evolution pattern of dry and wet occurrence in the PLB in the future and promote flood/drought control and disaster mitigation.

Multiphoton light-matter interactions invoke a so-called ‘Black Box’ in which the experimental observations contain the quantum interference between multiple pathways (1–3). Here, we employ attosecond coincidence metrology (4, 5) with a partial wave polarization manipulator to deduce the pathway interference within this quantum ‘Black Box’ (6) for two-photon ionization of neon and argon. The angle-dependent and attosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectra are measured across a broad energy range. Two-photon phase shifts for each partial wave are reconstructed through the comprehensive analysis of these photoelectron spectra. We resolve the quantum interference between the p → d → p and p → s → p ionization pathways, in agreement with our theoretical simulations. Our approach thus provides a microscope to look inside the ‘black box’ of pathway interference in ultrafast dynamics of atoms, molecules, and condensed matter.

BackgroundUstekinumab (UST) was approved in China for moderate-to-severe Crohn’s disease (CD) in 2020. The prevalence rates of tuberculosis and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection are high in China, and no guideline clearly states that tuberculosis chemoprophylaxis or prophylactic anti-HBV therapy should be prescribed before UST administration. This study aimed to assess the risk of tuberculosis and HBV reactivation in CD patients with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) and previous HBV infection receiving UST.MethodsA multicenter retrospective cohort study was carried out at 68 hospitals in China to assess 721 adult CD cases administered UST between May 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021. CD and concurrent LTBI or HBV carrier were included. Hepatitis B serology, T-SPOT.TB, and tuberculin skin tests were performed at baseline. The primary outcome was tuberculosis or HBV reactivation.ResultsPatients with CD-concomitant LTBI or who were HBV carriers receiving UST therapy were retrospectively enrolled from 15 hospitals in China. A total of 53 CD with LTBI patients and 17 CD with HBV carrier patients receiving UST were included. Treatment and follow-up durations were 50 ± 20 weeks and 50 ± 15 weeks in the LTBI and HBV carrier groups, respectively. A total of 25 CD patients with LTBI underwent chemoprophylaxis and 28 did not. A total of 11 HBV carriers had antiviral prophylaxis and 6 did not. No patient experienced tuberculosis or HBV reactivation or liver dysfunction during follow-up.ConclusionsUST was safe for treatment of CD because no patient developed tuberculosis, persistent hepatitis, or acute liver failure during therapy, whether with a prophylactic regimen or not, based on our sample size and limited follow-up time.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of perioperative dexamethasone on acute phase response (APR) after simultaneous bilateral total hip arthroplasty (SimBTHA).A retrospective case-control study was performed on 177 SimBTHA procedures. The patients were divided into 2 cohorts: patients receiving perioperative dexamethasone and patients in whom no dexamethasone was administered. We observed the effects of perioperative dexamethasone on the APR following SimBTHA by trending C-reactive protein and interleukin-6. Besides, the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), postoperative visual analog scale (VAS) score, use of antiemetic and analgesic rescue, and complications were also compared.Compared to the no dexamethasone group, patients receiving dexamethasone yielded a significantly decreased C-reactive protein on postoperative days 1, 2 and 3. Such differences of interleukin-6 were also detected. In addition, the incidence of PONV, postoperative VAS score, and use of antiemetic and analgesic rescue were significantly decreased without increasing the risk of early surgical wound infection and gastrointestinal hemorrhage in patients receiving dexamethasone.The anti-inflammatory effects of dexamethasone can attenuate the APR after SimBTHA as well as decrease the PONV, postoperative VAS score, and use of antiemetic and analgesic rescue.

Tube internal erosion, which corresponds to its wall thinning process, is one of the major safety concerns for tubes. Many sensing technologies have been developed to detect a tube wall thinning process. Among them, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are the most popular ones due to their precise measurement properties. Most of the current works focus on how to design different types of FBG sensors according to certain physical laws and only test their sensors in controlled laboratory conditions. However, in practice, an industrial system usually suffers from harsh and dynamic environmental conditions, and FBG signals are affected by many unpredictable factors. Consequently, the FBG signals have more fluctuations and are polluted by noises. Hence, the signals no longer directly follow the assumed physical laws and their proposed thinning detection mechanisms no longer work. Targeting at this, this article develops a data-driven model for FBG signal feature extraction and tube wall thickness monitoring using data analytic techniques. In particular, we develop a spatiotemporal model to describe dynamic FBG signals and extract features related to thickness. By taking physical law as guideline, we trace the relationship between the extracted features and the tube wall thickness, based on which we construct an online statistical monitoring scheme for tube wall thinning process. We use both laboratory test and field trial experiment to demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Stateful logic through memristor is a promising technology to build Computing-in-Memory (CIM) systems. However, aging-induced degradation of memristors' threshold voltage imposes a major challenge to the reliability and guardbands estimation of memristive CIM systems, especially the Material Implication (IMPLY) logic based CIM systems. In this paper, a novel in-situ aging-aware error monitoring scheme for memristor-based IMPLY logic is proposed. The proposed in-situ error monitoring scheme can achieve faster error detection speed and higher detection accuracy than the straightforward program-verify monitoring scheme. Simulation results under Monte-Carlo simulation show that the proposed monitoring scheme can effectively detect the major operation failures existing in IMPLY logic operations with a detection accuracy up to 99.95%. Moreover, a case study of error monitoring design of 4-bit IMPLY-based adder is carried out. The analysis result exhibits that the proposed in-situ monitoring scheme can achieve 75.2% improvement on the detection speed against the program-verify scheme. Further analysis on a convolution filter in VGG-11 based Binarized Neural Network shows that 74% improvement on the detection speed can also be achieved by using the proposed monitoring scheme, which suggests that the proposed in-situ error monitoring scheme is an efficient solution to improve the reliability of IMPLY-based memristive CIM systems.

Background: The aberrant formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) has been implicated in ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic recurrent intestinal inflammation. Cyclosporine A (CsA) is now applied as rescue therapy for acute severe UC. In addition, it has been curtained that CsA inhibits the formation of NETs in vitro and the mechanism of which was still vague. The study aimed to explore the mechanism CsA inhibits the NETs formation of colitis in vivo and in vitro. Methods: NETs enrichment in clinical samples was analyzed using databases from Gene Expression Omnibus and verified in our center. Dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced acute colitis mice model was used to investigate the effect of CsA on NETs of colonic tissue expression. To clarify the mechanism, intracellular energy metabolites were examined by Liquid Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer, and ROS levels were examined by fluorescence intensity in neutrophils treated with CsA after LPS stimulation. The transcriptional level and activity of G6PD of neutrophils were also assessed using qRT-PCR and WST-8. RNA-sequence was used to detect differentially expressed genes of neutrophils stimulated by LPS with or without CsA. The expression levels of related proteins were detected by western blot. Results: NETs enrichment was especially elevated in moderate-to-severe UC patients compared to HC. NETs expression in the colon from DSS colitis was decreased after CsA treatment. Compared with neutrophils stimulated by LPS, NETs formation and cellular ROS levels were decreased in LPS+CsA group. Cellular guanosine monophosphate and NADPH/NADP+ related to the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) were reduced in LPS+CsA group. In addition, CsA could decrease G6PD（rate-limited enzyme of PPP） activity in neutrophils stimulated with LPS, and the results were further verified by inhibiting G6PD activity. At last, P53 protein was highly expressed in LPS+CsA group compared with the LPS group. Intracellular G6PD activity, ROS level and NETs formation, which were downregulated by CsA, could be reversed by a P53 inhibitor. Conclusion: Our results indicated CsA could alleviate the severity of colitis by decreasing the formation of NETs in vivo. In vitro, CsA reduced NETs release via downregulating PPP and cellular ROS levels by decreasing G6PD activity directly by activating the P53 protein.

Study of prognostic and predictive biomarkers plays an important role in the design and analysis of clinical trials. The Cox proportional hazards model is often used to study the biomarker main effect and the treatment-biomarker interaction effect for survival data. The estimated effects can be biased if the proportional hazards assumption is violated. The restricted mean survival time is becoming popular in clinical studies for having a clear intuitive interpretation. In this article, we first propose nonparametric methods to make statistical inference for the one-sample problem of the biomarker effect on the restricted mean survival time; we then extend the methods to the two-sample problem for studying the difference in the biomarker effects between treatment groups in clinical trials. For a given biomarker, the restricted mean survival time is estimated by kernel smoothing methods with the inverse probability of censoring weights. We prove the consistency for the estimates and develop simultaneous confidence bands for the biomarker effects on the restricted mean survival time. The simultaneous confidence bands are evaluated in extensive simulation studies and are found to have good finite sample performance. We then apply the proposed methods to a breast cancer study conducted by the Breast International Group (BIG) to illustrate how the Ki67 biomarker, a protein marker of cell proliferation, affects the survival time of patients, compared between the treatment groups.

The light-driven formation of trihydrogen cation has been attracting considerable attention in multidisciplinary frontiers due to its vital role in interstellar chemistry. To understand the formation dynamics, most previous studies are focused on creating H3+/D3+ from unimolecular reactions of various organic molecules. Here, we observe and characterize the ultrafast formation dynamics of D3+ from bimolecular reaction starting from a D2-D2 dimer by performing pump-probe experiments using ultrashort laser pulses. We then control the emission direction of D3+ in the bimolecular reaction using a tailored two-color femtosecond laser field. The underlying control mechanism is in line with what is known from the light-control of electron localization in the bond breaking of single molecules. Our results pave the way towards the real-time visualization and coherent control of the light-induced bimolecular reactions with unprecedented precision.

As an early stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the diagnosis of amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) has important clinical value for timely intervention of AD. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-based resting-state brain connectivity analysis, which could provide an economic and quick screening strategy for aMCI, remains to be extensively investigated.This study aimed to verify the feasibility of fNIRS-based resting-state brain connectivity for evaluating brain function in patients with aMCI, and to determine an early screening model for auxiliary diagnosis.The resting-state fNIRS was utilized for exploring the changes in functional connectivity of 64 patients with aMCI. The region of interest (ROI)-based and channel-based connections with significant inter-group differences have been extracted through the two-sampleCompared with healthy controls, connections of the MCI group were significantly reduced between the bilateral prefrontal, parietal, occipital, and right temporal lobes. Specifically, the long-range connections from prefrontal to occipital lobe, and from prefrontal to parietal lobe, exhibited stronger identifiability (area under the ROC curveOur findings indicate that fNIRS-based resting-state functional connectivity analysis could support MCI diagnosis. Notably, long-range connections involving the prefrontal and occipital lobes have the potential to be efficient biomarkers.

Groundwater and surface water are hydrologically interconnected systems that exhibit dynamic water, heat and mass exchanges. In this study, a conceptual framework was used to investigate groundwater behaviors and associated hydrological exchanges by combining field measurements, digital filtering and analytical approaches, exemplified by a linked catchment-floodplain-lake system (Poyang Lake, China). The results show that the hydrological regime for both groundwater and surface water exhibit a seasonal variability in the lake catchment. Topographically, the lake catchment can be divided into the mountainous baseflow, ungauged lateral groundwater and floodplain groundwater that contribute to the lake storage changes. Although groundwater flow is generally from the mountainous catchment to the lake floodplain areas due to topographic effects, precipitation provides an additional input for the shallow groundwater and is expected to enhance the groundwater dynamics in terms of spatially heterogeneous responses. Mass production of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) from bulk materials is highly desired but far from being satisfactory. Herein, we report a general strategy to mechanically tailor semiconductor bulk materials into QDs. Semiconductor bulk materials are routinely available via simple chemical precipitation. From their bulk materials, a variety of semiconductor (e.g., lead sulfide (PbS), cadmium sulfide (CdS), copper sulfide (CuS), ferrous sulfide (FeS), and zinc sulfide (ZnS)) QDs are successfully produced in high yields (>15 wt%). This is achieved by a combination of silica-assisted ball-milling and sonication-assisted solvent treatment. The as-produced QDs show intrinsic characteristics and outstanding water solubility (up to 5 mg mL-1), facilitating their practical applications. The QD dispersions present remarkable photoluminescence (PL) with exciton-dependence and nanosecond (ns)-scale lifetimes. The QDs-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) hybrid thin films demonstrate exciting solid-state fluorescence and exceptional nonlinear saturation absorption (NSA). Absolute modulation depths of up to 58% and saturation intensities down to 0.40 MW cm-2 were obtained. Our strategy could be applied to any semiconductor bulk materials and therefore paves the way for the construction of the complete library of semiconductor QDs.

Neurofeedback cognitive training is a promising tool used to promote cognitive functions effectively and efficiently. In this study, we investigated a novel functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-based frontoparietal functional connectivity (FC) neurofeedback training paradigm related to working memory, involving healthy adults. Compared with conventional cognitive training studies, we chose the frontoparietal network, a key brain region for cognitive function modulation, as neurofeedback, yielding a strong targeting effect. In the experiment, 10 participants (test group) received three cognitive training sessions of 15 min using fNIRS-based frontoparietal FC as neurofeedback, and another 10 participants served as the control group. Frontoparietal FC was significantly increased in the test group ( $p =0.03$ ), and the cognitive functions (memory and attention) were significantly promoted compared with the control group (accuracy of 3-back test: $p =0.0005$ , reaction time of 3-back test: $p =0.0009$ ). After additional validations on long-term training effect and on different patient populations, the proposed method exhibited considerable potential to be developed as a fast, effective, and widespread training approach for cognitive function enhancement.

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) in plasmonic nanostructures has been investigated for decades due to their wide applications in photonic circuit, quantum optics and biosensing. Development of large-scale, uniform, and efficient plasmonic nanostructure system with tunable modes is desirable for their feasible utilizations. Herein, we design an efficient inch-scale SHG source by a solution-processed method instead of traditional high-cost processes. By assembling the gold nanoparticles with the porous anodic alumina templates, multiresonance in both visible and near-infrared regions can be achieved in hexagonal plasmonic nanostructure arrays, which provide strong electric field enhancement at the gap region. Polarization-independence SHG radiation has been realized owing to the in-plane isotropic characteristic of assembled unit. The tilt-angle dependent and angle-resolved measurement showed that wide-angle nonlinear response is achieved in our device because of the gap geometry of ball-in-bowl nanostructure with nonlinear emission electric dipoles distributed on the concave surface, which makes it competitive in practical applications. Our progress not only makes it possible to produce uniform inch-scale nonlinear arrays through low-cost solution process; and also advances the understanding of the SHG radiation in plasmonic nanostructures.

Background and Aims Intestinal ultrasound [IUS] has been increasingly reported to distinguish inflammatory or fibrotic intestinal stenosis in Crohn’s disease [CD] patients. However, the diagnostic value is unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the diagnostic role of different modes of IUS parameters. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library from inception to August 2021. Regarding effect sizes, weighted mean differences [WMDs] or standardised mean differences [SMDs] were used. We pooled data using a random-effects or fixed-effects model according to heterogeneity. The diagnostic accuracy of IUS for distinguishing fibrosis was pooled. Results A total of 19 studies were retained for qualitative analysis, and 14 were included in the meta-analysis [with 511 total subjects and 635 bowel segments]. In patients with fibrotic stenosis, the pooled WMDs for bowel wall thickness were 1.30 mm (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.69-1.91) thicker than in patients with inflammatory stenosis, and the pooled SMDs for strain value and strain ratio were 0.80 [95% CI: 0.41-1.20] and 1.08 [95% CI: 0.55-1.60] harder than in patients with inflammatory stenosis, respectively. The percentage of maximal enhancement of fibrotic stenosis was lower than that of inflammatory stenosis [WMD -10.03; 95% CI: -17.91- -2.16]. The diagnostic accuracy of IUS was not performed because only a few studies provided relevant diagnostic indicators, and these studies used different modes and parameters. Conclusions IUS currently is inaccurate to differentiate fibrotic or inflammatory stenosis in CD patients, and more studies assessing the significance of each parameter and its cut-off value in different modes of IUS are needed to be conducted in the future.
