Floating wind turbines often experience larger-amplitude motions caused by wind and ocean wave loads, while mooring-lines, such as catenary and taut mooring-lines, make the structure configurations along with an analysis of the global response more complicated compared to a fixed support foundation. Moreover, the restoring performance of dynamic mooring-lines exhibits a significant hysteresis behavior, and this hysteresis behavior may have profound impacts on the structural response of floating wind turbines under environmental loads. In this study, using the coupled finite element method, a dynamic simulation model is developed to study the motion responses of a spar floating wind turbine under consideration of mooring-lines hysteresis. In order to consider large-amplitude motion and nonlinear behaviors of catenary mooring-lines, a FEM (finite element method) model is developed based on a combination of 3D nonlinear beam elements and the super-element approach, and the interaction between mooring-lines and seabed is also included. Using our FEM numerical simulations, firstly, the restoring performance of mooring-lines and its hysteresis behavior are studied. Then, the motion responses, e.g., the displacements of the spar float undergoing various wave loads, are examined. The numerical results show that: the restoring stiffness of mooring-lines exhibits significant hysteresis behavior, and the restoring force is directionally dependent. Due to the hysteresis of restoring performance, for a case of regular wave conditions, little change of the spar surge in a steady-state is seen; however, for a case of extreme wave loads, the motion response gets about 14.4% smaller, compared with the quasi-static cases.

The previously developed numerical inverse method was applied to determine the composition-dependent interdiffusion coefficients in single-phase finite diffusion couples. The numerical inverse method was first validated in a fictitious binary finite diffusion couple by pre-assuming four standard sets of interdiffusion coefficients. After that, the numerical inverse method was then adopted in a ternary Al-Cu-Ni finite diffusion couple. Based on the measured composition profiles, the ternary interdiffusion coefficients along the entire diffusion path of the target ternary diffusion couple were obtained by using the numerical inverse approach. The comprehensive comparisons between the computations and the experiments indicate that the numerical inverse method is also applicable to high-throughput determination of the composition-dependent interdiffusion coefficients in finite diffusion couples.

Abstract Background Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has the potential to relieve neuropathic pain. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the NO-cGMP-PKG signaling pathway is involved in the analgesic effects of early hyperbaric oxygen treatment of neuropathic pain in rats. Methods Rats were randomly grouped for establishment of chronic constriction injury (CCI) models. Intrathecal catheters were inserted and 2.5ATA HBO therapy was administered from day 1 post-surgery for 60 minutes daily, continuously for 5 days; menstruum NS, DMSO, NO synthase(NOS) nonspecific inhibitor (L-NAME), soluble guanylyl cyclase(sGC) inhibitor (ODQ) and protein kinase G(PKG) inhibitor (KT5823) were administered intrathecally 30 minutes prior to HBO therapy. Pain-related behaviors in rats were observed at specific time points. Western blot and real-time RT-PCR were used to observe the expressions of PKG1 mRNA and protein in the spinal dorsal horn. Results Compared with the CCI group, HBO could significantly relieve mechanical and thermal hyperalgesia in rats. The thermal behaviors of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and their blend (50:50 wt.%) were revealed using thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR). A first-order reaction model (Coats-Redfern) and non-isothermal model-free method (Ozawa-Flynn-Wall) were applied to the TG experimental data to determine the pyrolysis kinetic parameters. The results showed that H2O and CO2 were first released from the EHL due to the degradation of the weakly linked side chains. The degradation of lateral chains, the breakage of aromatic series in the EHL structure, and the β scission of HDPE led to the formation of H2O, CO2, C=O, aromatics, alkanes, and alkenes. Low intensities of H2O, CO2, alkanes, and alkenes were also observed in the final pyrolysis stage due to the degradation of lignin groups. Interactions during co-pyrolysis were observed in the pyrolysis stages of 390 to 542 °C and 563 to 790 °C. The activation energy values of EHL, HDPE, and their blend obtained by the Coats-Redfern method were 48.0 to 94.4 kJ/mol, 230.2 kJ/mol, and 42.7 to 260.1 kJ/mol, respectively. When the Ozawa-Flynn-Wall method was applied, activation energy ranges of 121.4 to 243.7 kJ/mol, 143.5 to 335.9 kJ/mol, and 74.8 to 260.9 kJ/mol for EHL, HDPE, and their blend, respectively, were observed.

Commercial coconut shell-based activated carbon (CSAC) has low specific capacitance and specific capacitance retention owing to its undeveloped pore structure and low proportion of heteroatoms. In this study, dielectric barrier discharge plasma was used to enhance the specific capacitance and rate capability of CSAC. H2O was used as an excited medium to introduce oxygen functional groups. The physico-chemical properties of CSAC and CSAC modified by H2O plasma (HCSAC) were revealed by automated surface area and pore size analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical work was applied to investigate the electrochemical properties of CSAC and HCSAC. The results obtained showed that plasma modification improved the specific capacitance of CSAC by 64.8% (current density, 1 A g−1; electrolyte, 6 M KOH solution) within 100 s. This result is ascribed to the oxygen functional groups introduced to the surface of CSAC. It can also improve the hydrophilicity and wettability of the carbon surface leading to an increase from 76.7% to 84.6% in specific capacitance retention. Furthermore, H2O plasma modification can introduce oxygen functional groups without destroying the initial pore structures of CSAC. In summary, we provide a simple, fast, environment-friendly modification method to enhance the electrochemical properties of CSAC.

The Doppler effect of frequency-swept interferometry (FSI) is often seen as an obstacle to the dynamic ranging accuracy. However, the potential of this obstacle is rarely noticed and used. In this paper, by combining the periodical characteristics of the rotational Doppler effect, an FSI-based multi-parameter measurement method for the rotor is proposed. Through the establishment of the rotational Doppler formula of FSI, it is found that the frequency, direct component, and amplitude of the dynamic distance given by FSI can be utilized to estimate the angular velocity, axial clearance, and tilt angle of the rotor, respectively. A rotor platform and a fiber-optic FSI system were constructed, and a series of experiments were carried out to verify the proposed method. The experimental results showed that the relative errors of the measured axial clearance, angular velocity, and tilt angle were less than 3.5%. This work provides a new perspective on the multi-parameter measurement of the rotor and makes it possible to directly perform multi-parameter measurement inside the space-confined rotating machinery as only a single small-size fiber-optic probe is needed.

The study of the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) on Top Tensioned Risers (TTRs) through the application of numerical analysis is of great significance for marine engineering. However, to the best knowledge of the author, neither the in-field riser data nor the ocean current data used in published papers were from engineering design, so the research results provide limited guidance to the actual engineering project. In view of this problem, this study designed a single TMD to suppress the vibration of the engineering TTR under the action of the actual ocean current. First, the dynamic model of a riser-TMD system was established, and the modal superposition method was used to calculate the model. The non-resonant modal method of the flexible structure was used to design the TMD parameters for the engineering riser. Ocean current loading in the South China Sea was then applied to the riser. The vibration of the riser without and with TMD was compared. The result showed that TMD could effectively reduce the vibration response of the riser. When compared without TMD, the maximum value of displacement envelope and the RMS displacement were reduced by 26.70% and 17.83% in the in-line direction, respectively. Moreover, compared to without TMD, the maximum value of displacement envelope and RMS displacement were decreased by 17.01% and 22.05% in the cross-flow direction, respectively. In the in-line direction, the installation position of TMD on the riser was not sensitive to the effect of the displacement response; meanwhile, in the cross-flow direction the installation position of TMD on the riser was more sensitive to the effect of the displacement response.

Bio-chars were produced by co-pyrolysis of lignin with high-density polyethylene at 350 °C, 450 °C, and 550 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, automated surface area and pore size analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy were performed on bio-char to reveal the effect of temperature on its physical structure and chemical properties. All of the bio-chars demonstrated a highly disordered, turbostratic structure and exhibited a wide pore distribution. Dramatic losses of carbonyl, hydroxyl, and C-H groups indicated the development of condensed aromatic structure in the bio-chars. Specifically, biochar produced at 450 °C showed the highest degree of aromaticity, which is the relative content of aromatic structure with small fused rings and free radical concentration. This structure has more potential application in composite production and as solid fuel for its combustion or gasification. Moreover, biochar produced at 550 °C had the greatest porosity development, favoring its use as a precursor for activated carbon production.

Weathering of wood--plastic composites (WPCs) leads to discoloration and cracks, which greatly limits their outdoor application. In this study, light stabilizers (including UV-327, HS-944 and nano-SiO2) were added to the shell of a co-extruded high-density polyethylene-based WPC to improve its anti-ultraviolet (UV) ageing properties and simultaneously to maintain its good mechanical properties. The results showed that UV-327 was the most effective light stabilizer for improving the mechanical and anti-UV ageing properties of the composites among the three stabilizers used. WPC samples combined with 2% UV-327 had the highest retention rates in flexural strength and also had the smoothest surface after 2500 h of UV ageing. The samples with 2% UV-327 added had the best protection for discoloration, showing the lowest values of ΔE* (colour difference) and ΔL* (luminescence) in all samples after 2500 h of UV ageing. WPC samples with 2% UV-327 were also oxidized the least after 2500 h of UV ageing. The results reported herein serve to enhance our understanding of the efficiency of light stabilizers in preventing UV degradation of WPCs, with a view to developing co-extruded WPCs with low cost, high anti-UV ageing properties and good mechanical properties for outdoor applications.

This paper investigates the Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar sensor for multi-target displacement measurement in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The principle of three-dimensional (3-D) displacement measurement of civil infrastructures is analyzed. The requirements of high-accuracy displacement and multi-target identification for the measuring sensors are discussed. The fundamental measuring principle of FMCW radar is presented with rigorous mathematical formulas, and further the multiple-target displacement measurement is analyzed and simulated. In addition, a FMCW radar prototype is designed and fabricated based on an off-the-shelf radar frontend and data acquisition (DAQ) card, and the displacement error induced by phase asynchronism is analyzed. The conducted outdoor experiments verify the feasibility of this sensing method applied to multi-target displacement measurement, and experimental results show that three targets located at different distances can be distinguished simultaneously with millimeter level accuracy.

The appearance of a large number of mobile intelligent devices boosts the fast rise of mobile health (mHealth) application. However, due to the sensitivity and complexity of medical data, an efficient and secure mobile communication mode is a very difficult and challenging task in mHealth. The Opportunistic Networks (OppNets) is self-organizing and can expand the communication capacity by the movement of nodes, so it has a good prospect in the application of mHealth. Unfortunately, due to the shortage of stable and reliable end-to-end links, the routing protocol in OppNets has usually lower performance and is unsafe. To address these issues, we propose an adaptive routing optimization algorithm in OppNets for mHealth. This routing scheme firstly analyzes the relationship between nodes and defines the average message forwarding delay as a new metric to selectively forward messages, and then designs a local community detection algorithm based on the metric to adapt to the characteristics of OppNets, and finally resorts to some super-nodes to ferry messages between different communication domains. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed scheme. It increases the delivery ratio by about 30%, decreases delay by about 35%, and decreases the number of forwarding by about 5%, by comparing it with several existing routing schemes. We believe that the relationship between nodes, community, and message ferrying will play an important role in routing of OppNets for mHealth.

The synthesis of biomass-derived porous carbons (PCs) for supercapacitors by conventional two-steps method (chemical activation after carbonization) is complicated and time-consuming. In this study, we present a one-step microwave activation strategy to prepare hierarchically PCs from waste palm boosted by activated carbons (ACs). ACs with various specific surface areas (14, 642, and 1344 m2·g−1) were used for the first time to fast absorb microwave energy for converting waste palm into hierarchically PCs, that is, PC1, PC2, and PC3, respectively. The morphological and structural characterizations of PCs were studied. Also, the electrochemical performances of supercapacitors based on PCs as electrodes were further investigated. The results showed that the PC (PC1) boosted by AC with the lowest specific surface area possessed a porous structure (containing micro-, meso-, and macro- pores) with the largest specific surface area (1573 m2·g−1) and the highest micropore volume (0.573 cm3·g−1), as well as the suitable mesoporosity (29.69%). The as-prepared PC1 supercapacitor even in a gel electrolyte (PVA/LiCl) exhibited a high specific capacitance of 226.0 F·g−1 at 0.5 A·g−1 and presented excellent charge-discharge performance with an energy density of 72.3 Wh·kg−1 at a power density of 1.4 kW·kg−1 and 50.0 Wh·kg−1 at 28.8 kW·kg−1. Moreover, this promising method exhibited a simple, rapid, and cost-effective preparation of carbon materials from renewable biomass for energy storage applications.

High-throughput measurement using the numerical inverse method combined with the diffusion multiple technique was employed to determine the composition-dependent interdiffusion coefficients in fcc Al–Co–Cr–Fe–Ni high-entropy alloys at 1273, 1323, and 1373 K. The reliability of the obtained interdiffusion coefficients was confirmed by comparing the model-predicted composition/interdiffusion flux profiles with the experimental data. The tracer diffusivities of the components were then predicted based on the obtained interdiffusion coefficients and the simplified thermodynamic description. The diagonal interdiffusion coefficients in the present high-entropy alloys were comprehensively compared with those in conventional fcc alloys. Therefore, the sluggish diffusion effect does not apply for all the elements in the present fcc Al–Co–Cr–Fe–Ni high-entropy alloys. A similar result was also observed for the evaluated tracer diffusivities.

A near-infrared spectrometer based on novel MOEMS grating light modulators is proposed. The spectrum detection method that combines a grating light modulator array with a single near-infrared detector has been applied. Firstly, optics theory has been used to analyze the essential principles of the proposed spectroscopic sensor. Secondly, the grating light modulators have been designed and fabricated by micro-machining technology. Finally, the principles of this spectroscopic sensor have been validated and its key parameters have been tested by experiments. The result shows that the spectral resolution is better than 10 nm, the wavelength deviation is less than 1 nm, the deviation of the intensity of peak wavelength is no more than 0.5%, the driving voltage of grating light modulators array device is below 25 V and the response frequency of it is about 5 kHz. With low cost, satisfactory precision, portability and other advantages, the spectrometer should find potential applications in food safety and quality monitoring, pharmaceutical identification and agriculture product quality classification.

In this paper, the interdiffusivities in fcc Co–Ni alloys at 1373 K due to different types of diffusion couple experiments were firstly re-calculated via the unified Wagner method based on the measured composition profiles. Their maximum difference due to different approaches for diffusion couple preparation was found to be larger than one order of magnitude. Then, a comprehensive analysis on the effect of different preparation methods was performed. After that, a two-step diffusion couple technique in combination with the pragmatic numerical inverse method was proposed to determine the accurate interdiffusivities by eliminating the effect of external stress. Such a novel approach was successfully applied in the binary fcc Co–Ni alloys for demonstration purposes. Moreover, it is anticipated that such novel approach can be utilized as the standard method for accurate interdiffusivity measurement, and the resultant accurate interdiffusivities in different alloys may serve as a benchmark for the later experimental and theoretical studies.

Previous studies have focused on the effects of propylene glycol alginate sodium sulfate (PSS) against thrombosis, but the anti‐inflammatory potential is unknown. Therefore, we specifically focused on the protective effects of PSS on cerulein‐induced acute pancreatitis (AP) using a mouse model, and investigated the mechanism of PSS on autophagy and apoptosis via the Mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MEK)/extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK) pathway. Cerulein (100 ug/kg) was used to induce AP by ten intraperitoneal injections at hourly intervals in Balb/C mice. Pretreatment with vehicle or PSS was carried out 1 h before the first cerulein injection and two doses (25 mg/kg and 50 mg/kg) of PSS were injected intraperitoneally. The severity of AP was assessed by pathological score, biochemistry, pro‐inflammatory cytokine levels, myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and MEK/ERK activity. Furthermore, pancreatic histological scores, serum amylase and lipase activities, tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α), interleukin (IL)‐1β interleukin (IL)‐6 levels, and MPO activity were significantly reduced by PSS via up‐regulated MEK/ERK activity. The representative molecules of apoptosis and autophagy, such as Bcl‐2, Bax, Lc‐3, Beclin‐1, P62, were remarkably reduced. Taken together, these results indicate that PSS attenuates pancreas injury by inhibiting autophagy and apoptosis through a mechanism involving the MEK/ERK signaling pathway.

Zinc oxide nanowire and titanium dioxide nanoparticle (ZnO:TiO2 NW/NP) hybrid films were utilized as the photoanode layer in quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs). CdSe quantum dots (QDs) with a ZnS passivation layer were deposited on the ZnO:TiO2 NW/NP layer as a photosensitizer by successive ion layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR). Cells were fabricated using a solid-state polymer electrolyte and intensity-modulated photovoltage and photocurrent spectroscopy (IMVS/PS) was carried out to study the electron transport properties of the cell. Increasing the SILAR coating number enhanced the total charge collection efficiency of the cell. The electron transport time constant and diffusion length were found to decrease as more QD layers were added.
