Abstract

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to determine whether respiratory disease due to crowded living conditions and high levels of suspended and blowing sand had a major adverse impact on US military personnel during Operation Desert Shield. Methods. A questionnaire survey was administered to 2598 combat troops stationed in Northeast Saudi Arabia for a mean of 102 days. Samples of surface sand from seven different locations were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Results. Among surveyed troops, 34.4% reported a sore throat, 43.1% complained of a cough, 15.4% complained of chronic rhinorrhea, and 1.8% were unable to perform their routine duties because of upper respiratory symptoms. Evaluation of sleeping accommodations indicated that complaints of a sore throat and cough were most closely associated with sleeping in air-conditioned buildings; in contrast, complaints of rhinorrhea were associated with exposure to the outdoor environment while living in tents. Sand samples consisted mostly of quartz, with just 0.21% by weight of respirable size (, Respiratory infections among military personnel deployed to Operation Desert Shield during the 1990-91 Gulf War were highly prevalent before the oil refinery fires were set by Iraq. A study of 2,598 men in four military units stationed in northeastern Saudi Arabia showed that 34.4% were suffering from sore throats, 43.1% reported a cough, and 15.4% complained of chronic runny noses, or rhinorrhea. All men were ground troops ages 18 to 57 (mean age 24); 94% were enlisted personnel; and all had been deployed an average of 102 days at the time of study. Respiratory symptoms tended to be more prevalent among personnel deployed for longer periods of time. The sore throats and coughs tended to be reported by troops less exposed to the outdoors, with the highest prevalence among men sleeping in air-conditioned buildings. Those troops sleeping outdoors in tents tended to report chronic runny noses. Of the symptomatic troops, 1.8% were ill enough to be unable to perform their duties.

Abstract

Serological evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection among white-tailed deer has been reported from Illinois, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York. This study was conducted to determine whether deer in Texas also had evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Archived sera samples collected from deer in Travis County, Texas, during 2018, before and during the pandemic in 2021 were tested for neutralizing antibody to this virus by a standard plaque reduction neutralization assay. SARS-CoV-2 antibody was not detected in 40 deer sera samples collected during 2018, but 37% (20/54) samples collected in 2021 were positive for antibody. The seroprevalence rate between males and females differed significantly (p < 0.05) and the highest rate (82%) was detected in the 1.5-year-old animals. These findings extended the geographical range of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection among white-tailed deer in the United States and further confirm that infection was common among this species. Abstract

The composition, density, diversity, and temporal distribution of mosquito species and the influence of temperature, relative humidity, and rainfall on these data were investigated in 50 sites across five land cover classes (forest, savannah, barren, village, and agriculture) in southeastern Senegal. Mosquitoes were collected monthly in each site between June 2009 and March 2011, with three people collecting mosquitoes landing on their legs for one to four consecutive days. In total, 81,219 specimens, belonging to 60 species and 7 genera, were collected. The most abundant species were Aedes furcifer(Edwards) (Diptera: Culicidae) (20.7%), Ae. vittatus(Bigot) (19.5%), Ae. dalzieli(Theobald) (14.7%), and Ae. luteocephalus(Newstead) (13.7%). Ae. dalzieli, Ae. furcifer, Ae. vittatus, Ae. luteocephalus, Ae. tayloriEdwards, Ae. africanus(Theobald), Ae. minutus(Theobald), Anopheles coustaniLaveran, Culex quinquefasciatusSay, and Mansonia uniformis(Theobald) comprised ≥10% of the total collection, in at least one land cover. The lowest species richness and Brillouin diversity index (HB = 1.55) were observed in the forest-canopy. The urban-indoor fauna showed the highest dissimilarity with other land covers and was most similar to the urban-outdoor fauna following Jaccard and Morisita index. Mosquito abundance peaked in June and October 2009 and July and October 2010. The highest species density was recorded in October. The maximum temperature was correlated positively with mean temperature and negatively with rainfall and relative humidity. Rainfall showed a positive correlation with mosquito abundance and species density. These data will be useful for understanding the transmission of arboviruses and human malaria in the region.

Abstract

This study was conducted as part of a field-ecology study of arboviral and malarial activity in the Amazon Basin, Loreto Department, Peru, to determine the relative abundance, species diversity, and seasonal and vertical distributions of potential mosquito vectors. Mosquitoes were captured either by volunteers using mouth aspirators while mosquitoes attempted to land on the collectors or in dry ice-baited ABC light traps. Anopheles darlingi, the principal malaria vector in the region, was the most commonly captured anopheline mosquito in Puerto Almendra village (99%) while landing on humans, with a mean of 37.1 mosquitoes captured per 24-h period, representing nearly one half of all mosquitoes collected. An. darlingi human landing activity began shortly after sunset, peaked at 2000-2100 hours, and declined gradually until sunrise. This species readily entered houses, because 51% of the An. darlingi captured by paired collectors, stationed inside and outside houses, were captured indoors. Human landing collections provided a more accurate estimate of human attraction of An. darlingi, capturing 30 times as many as co-located dry ice-baited ABC light traps. In contrast, eight times as many Culex (Melanoconion) species, including known arbovirus vectors, were captured in light traps as by co-located human collectors. Despite being located within 300m of the village collection site, only a few Anopheles species were captured at the forest collection site, including only 0.1 Andarlingi/24 h, thus indicating that An. darlingi activity was directly associated with the rural village. These data provide a better understanding of the taxonomy, population density, and seasonal distribution of potential mosquito vectors of disease within the Amazon Basin region and allow for the development of appropriate vector and disease prevention strategies that target vector populations., Pub. in Medical Entomology, v45 n6, p1165-1172, 2008.

Abstract

Previously, we observed that serum from humans immune to dengue serotype 1 (dengue-1) neutralized the American genotype of dengue serotype 2 (American-2) to a greater extent than it neutralized the Asian genotype of dengue serotype 2 (Asian-2). To determine if this activity is protective, Aotus nancymae monkeys were infected with dengue-1 followed by either American-2 or Asian-2. Dengue-1 infected animals produced antibody with neutralizing titers of 2656 antibodies against dengue-1, 409 against American-2, and !20 against Asian-2. Infection with American-2 did not produce detectable viremia in either dengue-1 immune or dengue- 1 naive animals. These findings support the hypothesis that dengue-1 immunity might have prevented disease or altered the severity of disease in individuals sequentially infected with dengue-1 and American-2. Dengue viruses are single-stranded, positive-sense RNA viruses that belong to the Flavivirus genus in the Flaviviridae family. There are 4 serotypes of dengue virus (dengue 1 4), and each serotype consists of many closely related (genotypic) viruses. Dengue viruses are transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, and all 4 serotypes cause human disease. It is estimated that 100 million dengue infections occur annually worldwide [1], and these can either be subclinical or cause diseases ranging from a flulike syndrome dengue fever to severe disease characterized by capillary leakage and thrombocytopenia dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) to hypovolemic shock dengue shock syndrome., Pub. in the JOurnal of Infectious Diseases, v191, p1000-10004, 2005.

This study was conducted, as part of a field-ecology study of arboviral activity in the Amazon Basin of Peru, to determine the taxonomy, frequency, seasonal, and vertical distributions of potential mosquito vectors. In addition, the relative efficiency of human-landing collections and dry ice-baited Centers for Disease Control (CDC)-type light traps was determined for collecting mosquitoes. A total of 70 species of mosquitoes from 14 genera were collected from June 1996 through December 1997 of forested site near Puerto Almendras, ^ 20 km west southwest of Iquitos, Peru. Three species Psorophora (Janthinosoma) albigenu (Peryassu), Ochlerotatus (Ochlerotatus) fulvus (Wiedemann), and Ochlerotatus (Ochlerotatus) serratus (Theobald) accounted for 70% of all mosquitoes captured in human landing collections. Overall, biting activity occurred throughout the 24-h cycle, but was higher during daytime hours, primarily because of large populations of two day-biting species, Ps. albigenu and Oc. serratus. Oc. fulvus was active throughout the 24-h cycle, but was more frequently collected during the evening hours. Oc. fulvus, Ps. albigenu, Culex (Melanoconion) pedroi Sirivanakam & Belkin, and a mixture of Culex (Melanoconion) vomerifer Komp, and Culex (Melanoconion) gnomatos Sallum, Ruchings, & Ferreira, accounted for 73% of the mosquitoes captured during the hours of darkness by human collectors. In general, Ochlerotatus spp. and Psorophora spp. were more commonly captured in human landing collections, whereas most Culex spp. were more frequently collected in the dry ice-baited CDC-type light traps. In general, mosquito populations were lowest from June through August when river levels were at their lowest.
