This study aimed to optimize the solid waste collection and transportation system using ArcGIS Network Analyst and location-allocation tools. The generated solid waste was characterized by proximate analysis. The generation rate and composition were determined according to standard methods. The average solid waste generation rates for households, commercial sites, institutions, and recreational places were 0.48 kg/c/day, 15.03 kg/fac/day, 9.32 kg/fac/day, and 22.8 kg/fac/day, respectively. The estimated total generation rate of the sub-city is 207,004.03 kg/day and 712.13 m3/day as discarded base. Composition analysis revealed that food waste is the major component of municipal solid waste, with estimated weight and volume of 134,696.08 kg and 299.46 m3, respectively. Proximate analysis indicated that food and textile wastes have relatively high moisture content and fixed carbon. Candidate pre-collection bin allocations were optimized based on factors such as road network, distribution of solid waste generators, and existing temporary dumping sites, resulting in 1052 potential bin locations. Transfer station allocation was optimized by considering land use-land cover, slope, and geology. Twelve transfer routes and four transport routes were established to efficiently serve the bins and final waste destinations. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that ArcGIS Network Analyst and location-allocation tools can effectively optimize the municipal solid waste collection and transportation system, providing a robust framework for improving waste management efficiency. Facing the daunting challenge of climate change, driven by escalating greenhouse gas concentrations, our research introduces an innovative solution for CO2 capture. We explore a novel nanoporous carbon derived from Ulva lactuca, activated with eggshell waste, spotlighting waste valorization in mitigating atmospheric CO2. Through a systematic methodology encompassing variable carbonization temperatures (700–900 °C) and nitrogen flow rates (2–4 ml/min), complemented by a suite of characterization techniques, we unveil the synthesis of this pioneering adsorbent. Our study not only presents a novel, sustainable pathway for CO2 capture but also demonstrates superior performance, particularly with the NC800-4 sample, achieving a CO2 capture capacity of 1.40 mmol/g at 30 °C, alongside demonstrating consistent adsorption efficiency over four successive adsorption/desorption cycles. This breakthrough underscores the potential of leveraging waste for environmental remediation, offering a dual solution to waste management and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) applications. Because of the rising burden of cancer worldwide, cytotoxic drugs have become a significant threat to health and the environment. This investigation assessed the level of knowledge of oncology nurses regarding the risks associated with handling cytotoxic drugs and the management of cytotoxic waste and their impact on health and the environment. A qualitative study was conducted among oncology nurses at a Moroccan oncology centre. Most demonstrated a good understanding of cytotoxic drugs and their handling. But, there were notable deficiencies in foundational training. Occasional training sessions were offered, but they were considered insufficient in frequency and depth. The workload was identified as a major obstacle to proper safety protocol implementation. Although all participants recognised the dangers of improper disposal of cytotoxic waste, none had detailed knowledge of the specific environmental impacts. For a sustainable ecology, slaughterhouse sludge must be managed effectively in preview of the parasitic or coliforms' spill over to the community. In order to determine the effectiveness of a customized biological decomposer solution in lowering the parasitic eggs and coliform bacteria, three composting units (Unit 1, Unit 2, and Unit 3) were treated with its different amounts. Over a period of 60 days, pH, temperature, humidity, number of the parasitic eggs per gram (EPG) of faecal material, viability of eggs, and coliform counts were evaluated. By the fifth day of the composting process, pH had significantly (P < 0.05) increased across all the treatments and then decreased gradually. Also on the 5th day, all three units entered the thermophilic range (> 45 °C), which persisted for 20 days for Unit 3 and 15 days for Units 1 and 2. Humidity levels initially increased significantly (P < 0.05) in all three units (Unit 3 = 71%, Unit 2 = 64%, and Unit 1 = 55%) but then gradually decreased. On day 5, no decrease in EPG in Unit 1 was detected; however, a non-significant (P > 0.05) 12.5% decline in EPG in Unit 2 and Unit 3 was recorded. After that, a significant (P < 0.05) reduction in EPG was observed in all the three treatments until day 25. By day 5, decreased egg viability was significantly (P < 0.05) recorded in Unit 3 (21.43%); in Unit 1 and Unit 2, the decrease was 6.25% and 14.29%, respectively. Additionally, all units showed a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in total coliforms, meeting minimum allowable limit in Unit 2 and 3 on day 10 and on day 15 in Unit 1. The most substantial reduction in faecal coliforms was observed in Unit 3 (from 2.6 log₁₀ to 1.3 log₁₀), followed by Unit 2 (from 2.6 log₁₀ to 1.5 log₁₀), and then Unit 1 (from 2.6 log₁₀ to 1.6 log₁₀). The results of this study support recommendation of advanced composting techniques to eradicate or reduce the abundance of pathogens (parasites and coliforms). Hence, we endorse the value of careful composting procedures in environment-friendly abattoir waste management and agricultural practices through creating pathogen-free, eco-friendly fertilizers to promote both agricultural and environmental sustainability. The escalating accumulation of textile waste in landfill sites poses a significant environmental hazard that requires immediate intervention. This study focused on the sustainable and value-enhancing management of used fabrics via chemical recycling. The acid hydrolysis of six distinct types of cotton-based fabric waste (FW) has been conducted for the first time using a milder concentration (10%) of acid. The experiments resulted in the successful extraction of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The product underwent various analytical techniques, such as XRD, FTIR, FESEM, TGA, DTG, and PL spectroscopy, to verify the presence of microcrystalline cellulose (I-cellulose). The various sources of cellulose yielded varying results for MCC in terms of the yield (ranging from 28.2% to 80.2%), crystallinity index (ranging from 83.9% to 87%), crystallite size (ranging from 5.287 to 5.952 nm), thermal stability (ranging from 310 °C to 327 °C), and heat of fusion (ranging from 302 to 364 J g−1). The physico-chemical parameters of these six MCC samples were similar, with the carbon content ranging from 38.7% to 47%. The samples exhibited a range of bulk density values between 0.077 and 0.1975 g cc−1, and a water retention value (WRV) between 91.3% and 95.5%. The efficient retrieval of cellulose from various fabric waste sources offers an eco-friendly and sustainable approach to bolster waste management initiatives for fabric-related refuse. Investigation of Lantana camara biomass for potential bioenergy generation integrates invasive species (IS) management with the unabated demand for bio-energy. In the present investigation, L. camara was used to produce bio-oil by thermochemical conversion (pyrolysis). The resultant product evinced energy yield of 62.58% with 64.95% of elemental carbon (C) content and endorsed the suitability of L. camara bio-oil for biofuel applications and value addition. Thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis revealed a short thermal degradation profile, whereas spectroscopic analyses detected a host of organic compounds such as esters, phenols, ketones, aldehydes, aliphatics, and aromatics. The economic analysis of L. camara biomass conversion technology carried out in this study proved to be commercially competitive and viable versus petroleum refining. Antimicrobial and antioxidant assays with bio-oil evinced highest zone of inhibition (ZOI) against Candida albicans (31.02 mm), and displayed strong antioxidant property (DPPH IC50 value 233.72 ± 0.2 μg/ml). The bio-oil exhibited rheological characteristics of shear thinning and pseudoplastic fluid, particularly at low and intermediate shear rates. The present study highlights the multifaceted advantages of utilizing L. camara biomass, which include environmental remediation via waste management, bioenergy generation, and the feasibility of generating value-added products. The global shift towards sustainable waste management has led to an intensified exploration of co-digestion and co-treatment of sewage and organic waste using anaerobic reactors. This review advocates for an integrated approach where organic waste is treated along with the sewage stream, as a promising solution to collect, treat, and dispose of organic waste, thereby reducing the environmental and economic burden on municipalities. Various efforts, ranging from laboratory to full-scale studies, have been undertaken to assess the feasibility and impacts of co-digestion or co-management of sewage and organic waste, using technologies such as up-flow anaerobic sludge blankets or anaerobic membrane bioreactors. However, there has been no consensus on a standardized definition of co-digestion, nor a comprehensive understanding of its impacts. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art in liquid anaerobic co-digestion systems, which typically operate at 1.1% total solids. The research aims to investigate how the integration of organic waste into mainstream anaerobic-based sewage treatment plants has the potential to enhance the sustainability of both sewage and organic waste management. In addition, utilizing the surplus capacity of existing anaerobic reactors leads to significant increases in methane production ranging from 190 to 388% (v/v). However, it should be noted that certain challenges may arise, such as the necessity for the development of tailored strategies and regulatory frameworks to enhance co-digestion practices and address the inherent challenges. The production of lightweight aggregate based on waste is an important step towards sustainable and ecological construction. It contributes to reducing the negative impact of the construction sector on the environment by reducing the consumption of natural raw materials and reducing waste of various origins, including rubble concrete. The physical and mechanical properties, including grain shape index, water absorption, bulk density, resistance to crushing, frost resistance, leachability of heavy metals, and porosity of lightweight artificial aggregate made from rubble concrete waste (KRC) were presented in the paper. The obtained test results prove that the proposed artificial aggregate has similar water absorption and bulk density and even better frost and crushing resistance than artificial aggregates available on the market. Excessive consumption of natural resources to meet the growing demands of building and infrastructure projects has put enormous stress on these resources. On the other hand, a significant quantity of soil is excavated for development activities across the globe and is usually treated as waste material. This study explores the potential of excavated soils in the Brittany region of France for its reuse as earthen construction materials. Characterization of soil recovered from building sites was carried out to classify the soils and observe their suitability for earthen construction materials. These characteristics include mainly Atterberg limits, granulometry, organic matter and optimum moisture content. Soil samples were separated into fine and coarse particles through wet sieving. The percentage of fines (particles smaller than 0.063 mm) in studied soil samples range from 28% to 65%. The methylene blue value (MBV) for Lorient, Bruz and Polama soils is 1, 1.2 and 1.2 g/100 g, and French classification (Guide de terrassements des remblais et des couches de forme; GTR) of soil samples is A1, B5 and A1, respectively. The washing of soils with lower fine content helps to recover excellent-quality sand and gravel, which are a useful and precious resource. However, residual fine particles are a waste material. In this study, three soil formulations were used for manufacturing earth blocks. These formulations include raw soil, fines and restructured soil. In restructured soil, a fine fraction of soil smaller than 0.063 mm was mixed with 15% recycled sand. Restructuring of soil fine particles helps to improve soil matrix composition and suitability for earth bricks. Compressed-earth blocks of 4 × 4 × 16 cm were manufactured at a laboratory scale for flexural strength testing by using optimum molding moisture content and compaction through Proctor normal energy. Compressive strength tests were performed on cubic blocks of size 4 × 4 × 4 cm. Mechanical testing of bricks showed that bricks with raw soil had higher resistance with a maximum of 3.4 MPa for Lorient soil. Removal of coarse particles from soil decreased the strength of bricks considerably. Restructuring of fines with recycled sand improves their granular skeleton and increases the compressive strength and durability of bricks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Managing asbestos waste presents a significant challenge due to the widespread industrial use of this material, and the serious health and environmental risks it poses. Despite its unique properties, such as resistance to high temperatures and substantial mechanical strength, asbestos is a material with well-documented toxicity and carcinogenicity. Ensuring the safe removal and disposal of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) is crucial for protecting public health, the environment, and for reducing CO2 emissions resulting from inefficient waste disposal methods. Traditional landfill disposal methods have proven inadequate, while modern approaches—including thermal, chemical, biotechnological, and mechanochemical methods—offer potential benefits but also come with limitations. In particular, thermal techniques that allow for asbestos degradation can significantly reduce environmental impact, while also providing the opportunity to repurpose disposal products into materials useful for cement production. Cement, a key component of concrete, can serve as a sustainable alternative, minimizing CO2 emissions and reducing the need for primary raw materials. This work provides insights into research on asbestos waste management, offering a deeper understanding of key initiatives related to asbestos removal. It presents a comprehensive review of best practices, innovative technologies, and safe asbestos management strategies, with particular emphasis on their impact on sustainable development and CO2 emission reduction. Additionally, it discusses public health hazards related to exposure to asbestos fibers, and worker protection during the asbestos disposal process. As highlighted in the review, one promising method is the currently available thermal degradation of asbestos. This method offers real opportunities for repurposing asbestos disposal products for cement production; thereby reducing CO2 emissions, minimizing waste, and supporting sustainable construction. Over the years, Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) has been recognized as a crucial element in the toolkit of measures to combat climate change. At the European Union (EU) level, CCS plays a vital role in climate policy, particularly in reducing CO2 emissions from hard-to-abate industries. However, no comprehensive legal framework covers all stages of CCS. These stages include carbon capture techniques, transportation by ships or pipelines, injection, site closure, and post-closure management. Each of these stages is regulated by different legal frameworks that address various topics such as geoengineering, climate change, industrial activities, property, transportation, port operations, waste management, dumping, health, and the environment. Critical legal questions remain unanswered, such as who is liable for discharges in the marine environment during the transportation of CO2 by ships and for the long-term management of sub-seabed storage sites. As the transportation of CO2 by ships will likely have transboundary implications, we explore the legal possibilities, limitations and risks associated with exporting CO2 streams for sequestration under the sub-seabed. Evidence abounds to indicate the prevalence of indiscriminate disposal of household solid waste as a practice in Nigeria. This practice contributes to green crime and jeopardizes public health. Therefore, the focal point of several academic papers has been household solid waste management. The objective of the current study was to make a rapid review on practices that scholars have recommended for household members to take proper care of their waste made of paper, cellophane, plastic, metal and wooden material and the peculiarities of these recommended practices in Nigeria with implications for waste management practices in developing countries worldwide. The study adopted the systematic review method to explore findings in the available relevant studies that were published within the years 2017 and 2023 to depict the current situations of the study's subject matter in Nigeria. The current study sorted out these findings into themes. The review pinpointed several recommended practices such as zero-waste policy, waste minimization/reduction, and various disposal methods to manage the household solid waste and the major factors responsible for the setbacks these practices have faced. Introduction: Agricultural organic waste recycling can supply nutrients for crop production and partially replace chemical nitrogen fertilizers, which is beneficial for waste management and environmental protection. Nevertheless, comprehensive evaluation of the effects of different organic materials applications on crop yield and the environment is limited. Methods: Therefore, in this study, a comprehensive investigation of the synergistic effects of straw, pig manure, and biogas residue recycling on the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) systems was carried out in the North China Plain. Field experiments were conducted from 2019 to 2021, comprising five treatments: straw (ST), pig manure (PM), and biogas residue (BR) partially replacing chemical nitrogen fertilizer, sole application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer (CF), and a control with no nitrogen application (WN). Results and discussion: The results showed that organic materials significantly increased soil total nitrogen (3.04%-9.10%) and N recovery efficiency (REN; 42.21%-44.99%), but pig manure was more beneficial in increasing crop yields (3.50%), especially wheat yields (8.72%), and REN was significantly higher than that of the other treatments. Organic materials performed differently in wheat and maize seasons, and wheat yield could be improved by organic materials return. Organic materials stimulated N2O emission in wheat season (4.28%-32.20%), while biogas residue inhibited the N2O emission in maize season (47.47%). The negative effect of straw and biogas residue on yield decreased with increasing years of return, and pig manure continued to contribute to yield. In conclusion, pig manure is the optimal alternative that can increase crop yield, soil N content, and REN without stimulating N2O emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anthropogenic lead pollution remains a serious environmental concern due to the high incidence of human exposure worldwide and its severe health impact, particularly to children. We report a device-free colorimetric sensor for lead(II) ions in water based on the microdrop detection of the lead(II) rhodizonate complex trapped into a solid-solution of cellulose paper. This allows for the selective colorimetric detection of Pb2+ with a qualitative and quantitative detection limit of ~ 1 ppm. Comparative studies with Li+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Fe2+, Hg2+, Co2+, Ce2+, Mn2+, Cr2+, Cr2+, and Au3+ show high detectability for Pb2+ due to the unique charge transfer band present in the kinetically trapped Pb-RA complex. We demonstrated that without the solid-solution matrix, the lead(II) rhodizonate complex polymerizes into an extended solid. The mechanism and kinetics of Pb2+ detection were studied by UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD, transmission electron microscope (TEM), and dynamic light scattering analysis (DLS). Plastic pollution is the challenging problem of the world due to usage of plastic in daily life. Plastic is essential for packaging food and other goods and utensils to avoid the risk of microbial attack. Due to its hydrophobic nature, it is used for wrapping as laminates or packaging liquid substances in pouches and sachets. The tensile strength of the plastic is more therefore it is used for manufacturing carrying bags that can bear heavy loads. Plastic is available in various forms as per the requirements in our daily life. Annually millions to trillions of polyethene carry bags are being manufactured and utilized throughout the world. The plastic requires millions of years for natural degradation. The physical and chemical processes are able to degrade plastic material at the meager level by 200 to 500 years in natural conditions. Many industries focus on recycling of plastic. Biodegradation is a comparatively slow and cheaper process that involves microbes. To dispose of plastic completely there is a need of an integrated process in which all the possible methods of disposal are involved and used sustainably so that minimum depletion occurs to the livestock and the environment. In the current review, we could try to emphasize the intricate nature of plastic polymers, pollution caused by it and possible mitigation strategies for plastic waste management. Alongside the concerns of waste management, plastic production represents a future problem for managing greenhouse gas emissions. Advanced recycling and bio-based production are paramount to face this challenge. The sustainability of bio-based polyethylene (bioPE) depends on the feedstock, avoiding stress on natural resources. This work discusses Brazil's potential to meet future global bioPE demand by 2050, using sugarcane as feedstock and considering environmental sustainability for production expansion. From the assessed 35.6 Mha, 3.55 Mha would be exempt from trade-offs related to land use change (dLUC), biodiversity, and water availability. The scenario with the highest circularity efficiency would require 22.2 Mha to meet the global demand, which can be accommodated in areas with positive impacts in carbon stocks, neutral impacts in water availability, and medium impacts on biodiversity. Here, we show that dropping demand is essential to avoid trade-offs and help consolidate bioPE as a sustainable alternative for future net-zero strategies. Plastic pollution can be dealt with advanced recycling and bio-based production. Best-case scenario would require 22 Mha of sugarcane areas in Brazil to meet the 2050 global biopolyethylene demand. Background: Healthcare waste (HCW) poses a global hazard, particularly in developing country hospitals where mismanagement is common due to poor practices among staff. Training healthcare workers has shown promise in enhancing practices and behaviors. The aim of this study was to assessHCW management at Sahloul University Hospital (2019–2021) before and after training sessions. Methods: This study was conducted at Sahloul University in Sousse, Tunisia, spanned two years (2019–2021) and consisted of three distinct stages. Two audits of Healthcare Waste Management (HCWM) were conducted using a predetermined assessment framework derived from ANGED's guidelines, with an educational session separating the two audits. Results: In terms of sorting practicesthere was a substantial improvement in sorting practices following training. Specifically, the overall compliance rate for sorting sharps increased from 60.3 to 77.6% (p < 10 − 3), and for sorting soft and solid waste, it rose from 32.5 to 72.4% (p < 10 − 3) in 2021. Overall, resource indicators demonstrated improvement between 2019 and 2021, the compliance rate for the intra-service collection step increased from 31.3 to 58.2%. However, we observed persistent inadequacies in container and bag labeling, as well as challenges in tracing the time of healthcare waste collection. Recycling schemes for long‐lived products are challenged by the presence of “legacy substances,” which have been used in production in the past, but are nowadays classified as substances of concern. This study quantitatively evaluates the trade‐offs between phasing out legacy substances, increasing circularity levels, and reducing life cycle impacts of polyvinylchloride (PVC) window profiles recycling in Germany based on a comprehensive dynamic material and substance flow analysis coupled with a prospective life cycle assessment. Scenario results indicate that although lead had been phased out in virgin PVC by 2015, lead concentrations in end‐of‐life PVC window profiles will remain above 0.3% until the end of the century without a restriction of lead in recycled PVC and will be by factor 3–5 higher compared to a restriction as stipulated by EU 2023/923. However, the latter is associated with lower recycling rates and higher life cycle environmental impacts of PVC window frame waste management, which cannot be fully compensated by the introduction of new waste treatment pathways using currently available technologies. The study serves to introduce a new comprehensive modeling framework, which allows for the consideration of trade‐offs between substance, material, and environmental impact dimensions as a basis for discussing and developing sustainable waste management strategies. Water is a vital component of our existence. Many human activities, such as improper waste disposal from households, industries, hospitals, and synthetic processes, are major contributors to the contamination of water streams. It is the responsibility of every individual to safeguard water resources and reduce pollution. Among the various available wastewater treatment (WWT) methods, smart nanomaterials stand out for their effectiveness in pollutant removal through absorption and adsorption. This paper examines the application of valuable smart nanomaterials in treating wastewater. Various nanomaterials, including cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), nanoadsorbents, nanometals, nanofilters, nanocatalysts, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), nanosilver, nanotitanium dioxide, magnetic nanoparticles, nanozero-valent metallic nanoparticles, nanocomposites, nanofibers, and quantum dots, are identified as promising candidates for WWT. These smart nanomaterials efficiently eliminate toxic substances, microplastics, nanoplastics, and polythene particulates from wastewater. While several studies have focused on utilizing banana pseudostem waste (BPW) for wastewater treatment via bio-coagulation, this process still suffers from secondary pollution caused by the disposal of generated sludge. To avoid this pollution transfer issue, this study is the first to focus on the recyclability of post-coagulation sludge (PCS) to recover added-value products. For this purpose, BPW was used as a model bio-coagulant for the decontamination of laundry wastewater (LWW), followed by anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis schemes to recover biogas and biochar, respectively. In the first experiment, BPW succeeded in removing 55.44 ± 1.21%, 90.40 ± 3.09%, and 78.13 ± 2.44% of chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity, and surfactant, respectively, at the optimized condition (pH = 3.5, dosage = 2.34 g/L, stirring speed = 160.6 rpm, and settling time = 55.5 min). Inoculating the spent bio-coagulant with cattle manure (CM), with a mixing ratio of 1:1 (w:w), showed a biogas yield of 110.33 ± 6.02 mL/g COD. The synergetic effect of spent coagulant and microbes of CM was further validated by performing a COD mass balance, showing that about 31.52 ± 1.63% of CODfeed was converted to bio-CH4 (as COD). Further, the thermal treatment of digestate was successfully employed for biochar recovery at a yield of 0.58 ± 0.05 g biochar/g dry digestate. The study also revealed that the triple LWW treatment/biogas/biochar strategy could gain economic benefits with a payback period of 4.4 years. AbstractThe escalating growth in municipal solid waste production underscores the imperative need for efficient waste management, especially given that a substantial portion of MSW comprises biodegradable materials suitable for composting. This study investigates the impacts of using a synthetic bulking agent (perforated plastic balls) in conjunction with biochar, a natural bulking agent, on the aerobic composting of kitchen waste. The study aim to evaluate the effectiveness of this combined approach in optimizing the composting process. Four trials, each spanning 30 days, were conducted to assess the effects of different combinations of synthetic and natural bulking agents. The study uses a uniform-size perforated synthetic bulking agent in combination with biochar to enhance the composting process. Results indicate that incorporating the perforated plastic balls (8% by weight) alongside biochar significantly influenced key composting parameters. This approach accelerated the initial rise in temperature to 55°C, enhanced the reduction of total organic carbon, improved total Kjeldahl nitrogen retention, and facilitated the achievement of optimal carbon-nitrogen (C/N) ratios ranging from 19 to 20. Furthermore, the analysis of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) loss during composting revealed that potassium is more susceptible to leaching than phosphorus due to its higher mobility. ABSTRACT The increase in global waste generation is an important issue directly addressed in the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)‐12 and OECD countries produce large amounts of waste. In this context, the study examines the influence of waste generated and recycled on the load capacity factor (biocapacity/ecological footprint) in 28 OECD countries from 2000 to 2021 using novel panel data approaches. The study employs augmented mean group and novel half‐panel jackknife estimation approaches within the Load Capacity Curve (LCC) hypothesis and confirms the LCC for OECD nations. In addition, the long‐term prediction results illustrate that waste generation increases environmental destruction, while waste recycled supports the increase in the load capacity factor. The escalating generation of household medical waste, a byproduct of industrialization and global population growth, has rendered its transportation and logistics management a critical societal concern. This study delves into the optimization of routes for vehicles within the household medical waste logistics network, a response to the imperative of managing this waste effectively. The potential for environmental and public health hazards due to improper waste disposal is acknowledged, prompting the incorporation of contamination risk, influenced by transport duration, waste volume, and wind velocity, into the analysis. To enhance the realism of the simulation, traffic congestion is integrated into the vehicle speed function, reflecting the urban roads' variability. Subsequently, a Bi-objective mixed-integer programming model is formulated to concurrently minimize total operational costs and environmental pollution risks. The present investigation examines the circulation of TiO2−H2O${\mathrm{TiO}}_{2} - {{\mathrm{H}}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}$ and Ti6Al2V−H2O${\mathrm{Ti}}_{6}{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}{\mathrm{V}} - {{\mathrm{H}}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}$ based nanofluids while considering the concentration of waste discharge. An innovative stacking regressor model is used to increase prediction accuracy. Using Shooting and Runge Kutta Fehlberg's fourth and fifth‐order schemes, the governing equations are converted into ordinary differential equations using similarity transformation and then numerically solved. The findings are represented graphically, and the model's correctness is assessed using Gaussian Process Regression, Categorical Boost, Extreme Gradient Boosting, and Random Forest, with linear regression acting as a meta‐model. The closely related testing and training data show the model's consistency and stability. Magnetic field and inclination angle will decline the velocity, space, and temperature‐dependent internal heat generation factors will enhance the temperature. Raising the pollutant external source parameter raises concentration. Improper solid waste management in urban and semi-urban areas has led to adverse impacts on the environment, public health, and the economic well-being of communities. Therefore, this study analyzes the status of household solid waste management practices and their effects in Logia Town, Afar, Ethiopia. To achieve this objective, the study utilizes both descriptive and econometric models (binary logistic regression model). The descriptive results of the study revealed that there is general awareness of the importance of solid waste management (SWM) and its impact on the environment, economy, and human health among the respondents. Regarding respondents' attitudes, the majority of households understand the responsibility of proper waste disposal and its impact. However, in terms of solid waste management practices, 80% of households do not properly segregate their waste, 59.3% do not separate solid waste (SW) before disposal, and 74% of households engage in improper disposal practices. About 95.9% of respondents were aware that improper waste management can lead to diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, and cholera. Around 65% of the sampled households considered solid waste as a source of wealth, and, as a result, 56% of them reuse, recycle, and reduce waste. This indicates that solid waste has economic value for society. Regarding the environmental impact of SW, about 89% of respondents argued that SW adversely affects the environment by polluting rivers, lakes, wells, and air. This environmental impact negatively affects the well-being and economic status of the community. The binary logistic regression model found that having adequate solid waste landfills, access to door-to-door solid waste collection, knowledge of SWM rules and regulations, treating waste as a resource, and understanding the 3Rs (recycle, reuse, reduce) had positive and significant effects on the adoption of proper solid waste management practices in the study area. Therefore, to reduce undesirable effects and improve the value of SW, the relevant authorities should provide adequate solid waste landfills and door-to-door collection services, create awareness about SWM rules and regulations, and promote knowledge of the 3Rs. The biomethane potential of insect frass and leachates from waste (larvae feedstock) stockpile was evaluated. Frass was derived from a black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) operation that uses a fruit and vegetable waste diet. The two waste streams were characterized and the results of their compositional, proximate, and ultimate analysis were used in estimating methane yields from these materials. The estimated biomethane potential (BMP) of the frass ranged 149–275 L/kgVS depending on the calculation method used. This result compares well with that of empirical studies for cow manure whose BMP ranges 110–275 L/kgVS. Cow manure is the most popular biogas feedstock globally. Leachates reported an estimated BMP of 150 L/kgCOD. We conclude that it may be technically feasible to produce biogas from BSFL frass and from fruit and vegetable waste leachates. However, standard BMP experiments and semicontinuous pilot studies are still necessary before commercialization of these findings. These extra tests are executed to validate these findings and ascertain the life cycle attribute and long‐term process stability and hence determine the economics of using these potential substrates for biogas production as a strategy to implementing circularity in the fruit and vegetable industry. This study aims to analyze the performance and productivity of heavy equipment as well as the volume of waste produced in a waste disposal area (TPSA) located in Kuningan Regency. The research was carried out at the Ciniru TPSA located in Jalaksana District, Kuningang Regency, with the aim of finding out the data on the volumes of waste, transport trucks, and excavator heavy equipment. The results show that the amount of existing waste in the area reaches 630 m3 with an average amount of irritation of 71 times per day. In addition, the production of heavy machinery for garbage trucks, excavators, and bulldozers reaches 128.07 m3/hour, which is a working time of 8 hours and operational costs of Rp 244,957/hour, respectively. The findings of this study offer valuable information on the effectiveness of retaining walls in mitigating environmental impact, protecting agricultural areas, and improving waste handling practices. Simple Summary: Eusocial insects maintain hygiene in their nests with cleaning behaviours. One such behaviour is the disposal of refuse material, food waste, dead nestmate bodies, and other waste, outside the nest. This study on the waste disposal behaviour of Central Australian red honey-pot ants, Melophorus bagoti, provides valuable insights into the significance of learning in waste disposal. Naive ants improved over five consecutive runs in waste dumping, running straighter paths with less scanning. The observed differences between experienced and naive ants in waste dumping imply that learning contributes to more streamlined and less time-consuming waste management. In addition, dumping ants established sector fidelity in the consecutive runs, heading mostly in the same general direction on each dumping trip. This behaviour reduces the amount of navigational expertise that the dumper has to acquire. Learning in individuals thus helps an ant colony to cope with not only navigational challenges in foraging, which have been well studied in this and other desert ant species, but also with other demands of living in a harsh desert habitat. The Central Australian red honey-pot ant Melophorus bagoti maintains non-cryptic ground-nesting colonies in the semi-desert habitat, performing all the activities outside the nest during the hottest periods of summer days. These ants rely on path integration and view-based cues for navigation. They manage waste by taking out unwanted food, dead nestmates, and some other wastes, typically depositing such items at distances > 5 m from the nest entrance, a process called dumping. We found that over multiple runs, dumpers headed in the same general direction, showing sector fidelity. Experienced ants dumped waste more efficiently than naive ants. Naive individuals, lacking prior exposure to the outdoor environment around the nest, exhibited much scanning and meandering during waste disposal. In contrast, experienced ants dumped waste with straighter paths and a notable absence of scanning behaviour. Furthermore, experienced dumpers deposited waste at a greater distance from the nest compared to their naive counterparts. We also investigated the navigational knowledge of naive and experienced dumpers by displacing them 2 m away from the nest. Naive dumpers were not oriented towards the nest in their initial trajectory at any of the 2 m test locations, whereas experienced dumpers were oriented towards the nest at all test locations. Naive dumpers were nest-oriented as a group, however, at the test location nearest to where they dumped their waste. These differences suggest that in red honey ants, learning supports waste disposal, with dumping being refined through experience. Simple Summary: The role of mosquito eggs in disease transmission is not well understood, despite reports of virus vertical transmission and their ability to survive dry periods in a dormant stage. Additionally, field evidence shows that new generations of mosquitoes often reappear weeks or months later in certain city areas. This may be because both species follow an "R strategy" reproduction pattern, laying many eggs to ensure survival in a harsh environment. This study was conducted in southern Mexico in 2023 and focused on the egg-laying activity of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes during the dry inter-epidemic season. Ovitraps were used in the backyards of the houses to identify egg species, and further larval containers were surveyed. Most of the larval habitats were containers smaller than 1 L, commonly not treated as they were considered trash. Even though homeowners volunteer to remove them during government cleaning community-based campaigns, city waste disposal trucks transporting these containers do not take any measures to destroy the tiny eggs. We conclude with the urgent need to develop an egg-killing treatment, which could significantly enhance vector reduction and achieve a total stage strategy within the Integrated Vector Control Programs. Although integrated management and control programs implement intense control measures for adult, pupal, larval, and breeding sites during outbreaks, there is a lack of studies to understand the role of the vector egg stage in disease dynamics. This study aimed to assess the dry season quiescent Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus egg populations in houses and backyards in Tapachula, southern Mexico. Two hundred and fifty ovitraps were placed in 125 homes in the Las Americas neighborhood. A total of 7290 eggs were collected from 211 (84.4%) ovitraps. Only 5667 (77.7%) hatched under insectary water immersion and food supply conditions, with 4031 (71.1%) identified as Ae. aegypti, and 1636 (28.8%) as Ae. albopictus, respectively. The remaining 1623 (22.3%) did not hatch due to Delayed Hatching and/or quiescence tropical stage. Eighty-three larval containers were sampled with desiccated eggs during the dry season; most of them were described as trash waste because larvicides are only used for larger containers of 5–10 L. Evolutionary characteristics for the two species including partial egg hatching, ambient-regulated quiescence, the ability of the embryo to survive for a more extended period intra-seasonally, the egg sticking to inner container walls, demands urgent operational research to achieve successful egg-proof larval container methods. We report the standoff/remote identification of post-consumer plastic waste by utilizing a low-cost and compact standoff laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (ST-LIBS) detection system. A single plano-convex lens is used for collecting the optical emissions from the plasma at a standoff distance of 6.5 m. A compact non-gated Czerny–Turner charge-coupled device (CCD) spectrometer (CT-CCD) is utilized to analyze the optical response. The single lens and CT-CCD combination not only reduces the cost of the detection system by tenfold, but also decreases the collection system size and weight compared to heavy telescopic-based intensified CCD systems. All the samples investigated in this study were collected from a local recycling plant. All the measurements were performed with only a single laser shot which enables rapid identification while probing a large number of samples in real time. Furthermore, principal component analysis has shown excellent separation among the samples and an artificial neural network analysis has revealed that plastic waste can be identified within ∼10 ms only (testing time) with accuracies up to ∼99%. Finally, these results have the potential to build a compact and low-cost ST-LIBS detection system for the rapid identification of plastic waste for real-time waste management applications. Microplastics (MPLs) and nanoplastics (NPLs) are smaller particles derived from larger plastic material, polymerization, or refuse. In context to environmental health, they are separated into the industrially-created "primary" category or the degradation derivative "secondary" category where the particles exhibit different physiochemical characteristics that attenuate their toxicities. However, some particle types are more well documented in terms of their fate in the environment and potential toxicological effects (secondary) versus their industrial fabrication and chemical characterization (primary). Lateritic soil, a prevalent geological material in tropical regions, often exhibits poor engineering properties, leading to road pavement failures. Meanwhile, the alarming rise in plastic waste poses environmental concerns. This innovative study explores the potential of utilizing waste plastics as a lateritic soil addictive for sustainable road construction. Varying percentages by weight of shredded waste plastic (2%, 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10%) were incorporated into lateritic soil samples, evaluating its effects on soil geotechnical properties. The results revealed that lateritized plastic (shredded plastic waste and lateritic soil) containing 2% shredded plastic waste gave the optimum maximum dry density of 1.985 g/cm3, and the lateritized plastic containing 10% shredded plastic waste gave the highest optimum moisture content of 18%. However, the lower California bearing ratio obtained on the addition of plastic waste showed that the lateritized plastic is relatively weak and can only be used for roads with low traffic. The incorporation of shredded plastic waste into lateritic soil for stabilization is a promising polymer science-based method. By reducing the need for conventional materials and diverting plastic waste from landfills, this approach contributes to a more environmentally friendly infrastructure supporting the achievement of United Nation Sustainable Development Goals. The valorisation of sludges from aggregate production into construction materials is required for full circularity in mining waste management. This study explores valorisation pathways, relevant regulatory frameworks, and End-of-Waste (EoW) criteria for specific settings in Spain and Norway. The explored valorisation routes involved the production of filler, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), and lightweight aggregates (LWAs) for the production of cement-based products, and precursors for 3D printed construction material. The sludge from Norway revealed a non-polluted stream and a stream contaminated with organic phases and clays. Sludge-based filler proved suitable in concrete production with contents of up to 40% of total binder, providing adequate consistency and cohesion. However, clays in the sludge increased the demand for water and superplasticizer. Clay contents were still insufficient for the applications as SCMs, as the calcined sludge demonstrated limited reactivity. The application to produce LWAs was promising, but further microstructure optimization is still required. The clay content was also relevant for the sludge from the site in Spain, as it provided 3D printing mixes with good plasticity. The dosage optimization still required the addition of enzymes, limestone, and natural fibres to improve cohesion, workability, and resistance to the cracking of the 3D printing mix. Tetra-octyl diglycolic amide (TODGA) is an emerging novel solvent for flowsheet demonstrations of novel nuclear extraction processes used in nuclear fuel cycle and associated waste management activities. Public–private partnership (PPP) has delivered expected results on a number of significant projects. Yet, despite the growing appeal, problems have been encountered which have either resulted in slow progress or the total failure of such arrangements. This study offers a comparison between Nigeria and South Africa focusing on several identified critical success factors (CSFs) for PPPs. We rely on secondary data to compare Nigeria and South Africa based on the top ten ranking CSFs identified in the literature. Findings reveal that both countries account for the highest number of PPP projects in Africa but have not recorded huge successes as a result of their shortcomings in important CSFs responsible for the success of PPPs. Nigeria, for instance, is still being challenged with poor energy supply, bad road networks, and ineffective waste management practices, among others. South Africa appears to have had better success in PPP delivery due to a suitable financial market, stable economic policy, favorable legal framework, and a transparent procurement process. We conclude by highlighting the key CSFs for PPPs in Nigeria and South Africa and emphasize the need to address the identified shortcomings. The relevance of this study is in its contribution to the understanding of CSF in PPP projects thereby offering useful insights for policy makers and administrators in improving the success rate of PPPs and enhancing the delivery of public services in these countries. From a finite-time thermodynamics perspective, a thermoeconomic analysis of a Novikov model employing a linear heat transfer law is carried out. A new component in the cost function is proposed to examine its relationship with waste management while operating in the maximum power, ecological, and efficient power regimes. The methodology consists of optimizing the profit function by including our new waste management cost function, leveraging the same method used by DeVos ("Endoreversible thermoeconomics," Energy Convers. Manage., vol. 36, pp. 1–5, 1995) and Pacheco et al. ("Thermoeconomic optimization of an irreversible novikov plant model under different regimes of performance," Entropy, vol. 19, p. 118, 2017). Searching for the optimal thermoeconomic efficiencies for the ecological case a novel numerical method developed by the corresponding author (A. M. The accumulation of waste in landfill is currently a challenge globally and in South Africa. The primary motivation of this research was to contribute to identifying and evaluating pathways for diverting plastic waste from landfill and advancing the plastics circular economy. This study assessed, for South Africa, key measures implemented by selected countries to promote recycling in order to divert waste from the landfill. The National Waste Management Strategy of 2020 for South Africa mandates successive waste reduction targets toward zero waste landfill by 2050. Material flow analysis (MFA) was extended from previous studies and used to map plastic flows over three successive intervals to assess progress made toward diversion of plastic waste from landfill. The percentage of plastic materials sent to landfill for South Africa were 74%, 78%, and 39% in 2017, 2019, and 2021, respectively. Potential pathways were identified as strategies for the South African to accelerate the reduction of plastic waste to landfill. These were modeled as single and as combined actions, through sensitivity analysis on the MFA‐derived Sankey diagram and used to assess their impact on waste to landfill reduction. The scenario analysis highlighted improved waste collection and waste sorting as key measures and enablers that should be developed and a priority for reduction of plastic waste to landfill before the 2050 target year. Human-generated waste, including infectious healthcare waste, poses significant risks to public health and the environment. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the global production of infectious waste, emphasizing the need for safe and sustainable waste management practices. While autoclaves are commonly used for on-site disposal, alternative methods like ozone gas and UV-C radiation offer environmentally friendly options that effectively eliminate pathogens without leaving toxic residues. Inadequate waste management can contribute to disease transmission, while open burning releases harmful pollutants. This study investigated the effectiveness of different disinfection agents – ozone gas and UV-C radiation – on infectious solid waste contaminated with bacteria. The bacterial indicators examined were Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The experimental methods included operating each ozone and UV-C radiation individually and simultaneously using ozone gas and UV-C radiation. The study also investigated exposure times and various concentrations of ozone gas. The findings demonstrated that the simultaneous application of ozone gas and UV-C radiation was the most effective method for decontaminating infectious solid waste and targeting the selected bacteria. The concentration of ozone gas ranged from 165 to 5000 ppm, depending on generation time and treatment chamber volume, while exposure times varied from 1 to 180 minutes. In applying UV-C rays, complete elimination of S. aureus was observed after 60 minutes up to 6-log, while the reduction of B. subtilis and P. aeruginosa were 2-log and 3-log, respectively. Ozone gas had the ability to inactivate all strains, but when ozone gas and UV-C rays were used simultaneously, this process was accelerated and improved. The total reduction in the bacterial load was 8-log. Considering the increase in population and the subsequent increase in waste generation, adopting an environmentally friendly waste management method can be very advantageous. Implications: This study highlights the effectiveness of simultaneously applying ozone gas and UV-C radiation for decontaminating infectious solid waste, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional thermal treatments like autoclave and incineration. By optimizing ozone concentrations and exposure times, this method reduces disease transmission risks and minimizes environmental impact. These findings are crucial, especially during outbreaks such as the COVID-19 pandemic, providing scalable, sustainable waste management solutions for healthcare facilities. This study challenges the conventional perception of waste as a discarded object devoid of use and aims to redefine its nature by dissociating it from the boundaries of value. To achieve this, the term sslgi (sweeping) is proposed to shift the focus of waste management from relegation to obsolescence to active disposition that retains latent value. This conceptual shift redefines "reuse" in design as the activation of the inherent value in objects. This research also explores the creation of novel materials, exemplified by the extraterrestrial material StarCrete, which is composed of dust, soil, and minimal organic additives, along with designers' use of new materials derived from limestone dust and material-driven speculative design that experiments with synthetic (plastic) and natural substances. These cases illuminate the inherent [re]usability of material entities that are ready for activation in multiple interconnected contexts. From this perspective, we can re-view the role of the designer as [re]assembling existing materials and negotiating various influencing factors. Ultimately, this research demonstrates that transcending the binary perceptions of value and worthlessness allows designers to approach [re]use beyond the confines of the production-consumption-disposal paradigms, thereby decoupling objects from the deterministic use values imposed on them. We investigate how duration of storage affects food waste behavior. We propose and demonstrate a negative impact of duration of storage: even when two packaged food products are otherwise identical (i.e., same manufacturing/expiration dates, not expired, and unopened), the product that has been stored for a longer duration under current ownership is more likely to be wasted and is likely to be wasted in greater quantities. This occurs because duration of storage lowers consumers' perceptions of food freshness, even when normative justification is not possible. The duration of storage has an independent effect over and above those due to manufacturing and expiration dates, and the effect persists in both single and joint evaluations. We draw from research in several areas, including ownership, mental accounting, food science, and waste management to develop our theory. The study focuses on waste management and sampling practices carried out in two large Baltic cities: Riga (Latvia) and Tartu (Estonia). Even though waste collection schemes are not at the same centralisation level in the two municipalities, certain similarities can be observed in waste collection, management and sampling processes. Governed by provisions of Council Directive 1999/31/EC of 26 April 1999 on the landfill of waste, general national waste treatment legislation, and the national waste management plans, waste management practices in Latvia and Estonia are moving towards minimalisation of waste landfilling and maximalisation of waste inclusion into various recycling practices (use in waste biodegradation cells, bioreactors, different waste recycling facilities, in developing modern waste management supporting infrastructure, etc.). Therefore, waste management in two countries can be partly characterised as a vital element of emerging circular economy activities aimed at minimising landfill deposition of waste, hence, a more effective and permanent approach to sustainable waste management problems, on the one hand, and maximising the diversified use of waste in different branches of economy, hence, larger economic and social benefits. This paper offers a situated analysis of infrastructures of surveillance and control in Rotterdam through Latour & Hermant’s concept of the oligopticon. Oligopticons are networked devices and their supporting infrastructures that render the city in extremely narrow but very clear representations, in this case as a city of waste hotspots. In Rotterdam, public management is designing data-hungry oligopticons that map, control and intervene in the illegal disposal of waste and litter. An analysis of two vignettes from the author’s ethnographic fieldwork finds that these oligopticons do more than simply make visible and control these practices of waste disposal: they instead engage in punitive politics that frames those who illegally dispose of waste as exceptions to a normalizing way of life, fighting not waste but difference. Through ethnographic comparison, this paper aims to evoke thought, imagination and reflection in readers regarding the consequences of infrastructures of surveillance and control and the intimate knowledge that may escape these infrastructures. Background Results Conclusion During the processing of spent coffee grounds (SCGs) several residues are obtained, which are mostly disposed of in landfills. There is an urgent need for a comprehensive waste management strategy for these residues. This study evaluates the potential of SCGs as a biofertilizer by assessing their effects on lettuce leaves and the release of antioxidants following in vitro digestion and fermentation.Lettuce plants were grown with different amounts of SCGs (0–150 g kg−1) in the substrate. High SCG concentrations in the soil generated lighter colored tissues, a decrease in the green color, less root development, and lower dry weight of leaves (P < 0.05). The SCG levels also affected the release of antioxidants by the final product. This effect was more pronounced in the digested fraction: applying the Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) method, the addition of SCGs from 10 g kg−1 to 125 g kg−1 increased the amount of antioxidant from 43.88 ± 4.81 to 105.96 ± 29.09 μmol Trolox g−1 of dry weight (P < 0.05). The Indigo Carmine Reducing Capacity (ICRED) method also showed a similar trend, but in this case the highest value was obtained with 150 g kg−1 of SCGs (16.41 ± 3.93 mmol catechin g−1 of dry weight) (P < 0.05). Moreover, in the fermented fraction a significant increase in the antioxidant released was found with low levels of SCG(P<0.05), while lettuces fertilized with intermediate amounts of SCGs (25 and 50 g kg−1) presented the highest amount of insoluble antioxidant (P < 0.05).A compromise should be found in order to achieve a product with a high antioxidant capacity and an acceptable visual quality. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Accurate forecasting of municipal solid waste (MSW) generation is critical for effective waste management, given the rising volumes of waste posing environmental and public health challenges. This study investigates the efficacy of hybrid forecasting models in predicting MSW generation trends across Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. The empirical analysis utilizes five distinct approaches – ARIMA, Theta model, neural networks, exponential smoothing state space (ETS), and TBATS models. MSW data spanning 1995–2021 for 29 OECD nations are analyzed using the hybrid models and benchmarked against individual ARIMA models. The results demonstrate superior predictive accuracy for the hybrid models across multiple error metrics, capturing complex data patterns and relationships missed by individual models. The forecasts project continued MSW generation growth in most countries but reveal nuanced country-level differences as well. The implications for waste management policies include implementing waste reduction and recycling programs, investing in infrastructure and technology, enhancing public education, implementing pricing incentives, rigorous monitoring and evaluation of practices, and multi-stakeholder collaboration. However, uncertainties related to model selection and data limitations warrant acknowledgment. Overall, this study affirms the value of hybrid forecasting models in providing robust insights to inform evidence-based waste management strategies and transition toward sustainability in the OECD region. The golden jackal (Canis aureus) has rapidly expanded its range in Europe, prompting questions about its ecological impact and management. The species' expansion strategy differs from other European countries. Despite its presence demonstrated for thirty years, it still has a limited presence in Austria; its successful reproduction has just recently been confirmed. Our study provides the first comprehensive insights into the dietary habits of jackals in Austria. The analysed jackal stomachs, with 48 food items, revealed a diverse diet. The primary foods were wild ungulates, mostly from scavenging, mostly cervids and partially wild boar, making up nearly half of their diet. Domestic animals and household food comprised secondary sources, while plant matter had tertiary importance. The consumption of small mammals, birds, and invertebrates had little importance. We detected the consumption of a smaller carnivore, a marten. Our findings align with observations from other central-southeastern European regions, indicating that jackals exhibit diverse and opportunistic foraging behavior. This adaptability will likely contribute to their continued expansion in Austria and Europe. Further research is needed to explore potential ecological implications. Plastics are in high demand for various uses worldwide because of their low cost, versatility, lightweight, low density, flexibility, high strength, and durability. An increase in single-use plastics and ineffective solid waste disposal and recycling strategies have resulted in a global microplastic (MP) pollution epidemic, with negative implications for the ecosystem and public health safety. Analytical methods, including thermogravimetry and chromatography, have been developed to detect MPs. Nevertheless, molecular spectroscopy methods such as Near Infrared (NIR), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Raman, and fluorescence spectroscopy for MP analysis have gained attention in recent years due to their rapidity, low cost, accuracy, and portability of spectrometers. This review article provides in-depth coverage of the survey of current literature on the challenges, toxicity, sample pretreatment, and spectroscopic (Fluorescence, Raman, FTIR) and real-time (satellite imagery, unmanned aerial vehicles, and aquatic drone technology) microplastic detection methods. Machine learning, micro-hyperspectral imaging, and chemometrics approach to microplastic detections are discussed. Upcycling food waste into PHAs offers a promising solution to reduce environmental impact and generate value-added products for drug delivery, scaffold materials, and tissue engineering. Lignocellulosic food waste requires pretreatment and detoxification, whereas waste cooking oil can be fermented directly to produce PHAs. Cupriavidus necator excels in PHA production from lignocellulosic feedstock, showing tolerance to inhibitors. Pseudomonas spp. stand out for waste cooking oil utilization owing to their capacity for esterase and lipase production, enabling PHA accumulation. Butyl acetate is the optimal solvent for PHA recovery owing to its high yield, purity, and molecular weight, with minimal toxicity. PHAs can be recycled through methods such as extrusion, pyrolysis, gasification, and anaerobic digestion within a closed-loop cycle. This review emphasizes the urgent need for food waste upcycling as a response to the mounting global food waste crisis. Focusing on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) as an alternative to traditional plastics, it examines the potential of various food wastes as feedstock for microbial fermentation and PHA production. The upcycling of food waste including cheese whey, waste cooking oil, coffee waste, and animal fat is an innovative practice for food waste management. This approach not only mitigates environmental impacts but also contributes to sustainable development and economic growth. Downstream processing techniques for PHAs are discussed, highlighting their role in obtaining high-quality materials.
