Abstract

Malvestuto’s version of the normalized mutual information is a well-known information theoretic index for quantifying agreement between two partitions. To further our understanding of what information on agreement between the clusters the index may reflect, we study components of the index that contain information on individual clusters, using mathematical analysis and numerical examples. The indices for individual clusters provide useful information on what is going on with specific clusters.

Abstract

In the transition from Dutch primary to secondary education, two indicators are used to place students in the right track: primary school teachers' track recommendations (TTR) and standardized achievement tests (SATs) at the end of primary school. Which indicator is better for placing students is a long-standing issue among educational researchers and professionals. Since 2015, the SAT is administered after the TTR has been given; previously, SAT was administered first. In the current study, it was investigated to what extent TTR and a commonly used SAT predict students' educational attainment after three years of secondary education for multiple cohorts before and after 2015. The results were compared for educational tracks and for different socio-economic status (SES) groups, using multiple samples approaching population data. For all educational tracks and SES groups the results show that TTR is a better predictor of educational attainment than SAT. Furthermore, large differential effects for SES were found. The change of administrative sequence in 2015 had no effect on the overall predictive accuracy: TTR remained the better predictor. The results give new insights into the predictive value of both TTR and SAT before and after the change in administration sequence.

Abstract

The Rand index continues to be one of the most popular indices for assessing agreement between two partitions. The Rand index combines two sources of information, object pairs put together, and object pairs assigned to different clusters, in both partitions. Via a decomposition of the Rand index into four asymmetric indices, we show that in many situations object pairs that were assigned to different clusters have considerable impact on the value of the overall Rand index.

Abstract

Individual performance was compared across three different tasks that tap into the binding of stimulus features in perception, the binding of action features in action planning, and the emergence of stimulus--response bindings ('event files'). Within a task correlations between the size of binding effects were found within visual perception (e.g., the strength of shape-location binding correlated positively with the strength of shape-colour binding) but not between perception and action planning, suggesting different, domain-specific binding mechanisms. To some degree, binding strength was predicted by priming effects of the respective features, especially if these features varied on a dimension that matched the current attentional set.

88. A Comment on 'The 'J' Index as a Measure of Nominal Scale Response Agreement'

Abstract

Various authors have proposed agreement indices for measuring nominal scale response agreement between two judges. Two situations may occur. Either the categories of the nominal scale are defined in advance and both raters use the same categories, or the categories are not defined in advance and the number of categories used by each rater is different. For the former case, the kappa statistic by Cohen (1960) is a popular measure. For the latter case, agreement measures have been proposed by Brennan and Light (1974), Hubert (1977), and Janson and Vegelius (1978, 1982). To choose the best or most appropriate coefficient, the various measures need to be better understood. The behavior of J and [gamma] in the general nominal case is a topic for further investigation. For the moment, only J exhibits none of the four undesirable properties described in this article and may for that reason be preferred over [gamma].
