Abstract

The structure of finite self-assembling systems depends sensitively on the number of constituent building blocks. Recently, it was demonstrated that hard sphere-like colloidal particles show a magic number effect when confined in spherical emulsion droplets. Geometric construction rules permit a few dozen magic numbers that correspond to a discrete series of completely filled concentric icosahedral shells. Here, we investigate the free energy landscape of these colloidal clusters as a function of the number of their constituent building blocks for system sizes up to several thousand particles. We find that minima in the free energy landscape, arising from the presence of filled, concentric shells, are significantly broadened. In contrast to their atomic analogues, colloidal clusters in spherical confinement can flexibly accommodate excess colloids by ordering icosahedrally in the cluster center while changing the structure near the cluster surface. In-between these magic number regions, the building blocks cannot arrange into filled shells. Instead, we observe that defects accumulate in a single wedge and therefore only affect a few tetrahedral grains of the cluster. We predict the existence of this wedge by simulation and confirm its presence in experiment using electron tomography. The introduction of the wedge minimizes the free energy penalty by confining defects to small regions within the cluster. In addition, the remaining ordered tetrahedral grains can relax internal strain by breaking icosahedral symmetry. 77. Spatiotemporal Evolution of Conflict and Risk in South Asia Based on Multi-Source Data

Abstract

South Asia shares a large territorial border with China, and is the latter's land "position" to enter the Indian Ocean and an important part of the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road." Based on the conflict data in South Asia collected from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Database, the Global Terrorism Database, and the Uppsala Conflict Database, the spatial and temporal changes and intensity distribution of conflicts during 2011-2020 were explored using geostatistical methods such as nuclear density, spatial autocorrelation, and spatial hot spot detection and analysis. The results revealed the following: (1) From 2011 to 2020, the number of conflicts in South Asia increased, but the number of casualties decreased. From the perspective of spatial distribution, regional conflict events are concentrated in the "outer ring of South Asia," and the cluster centers form a "trapezoid" pattern. The Kashmir-Sindh line is a trapezoid at the top bottom, and the Dhaka-Chettisgar-Tamilnad-Colombo line is a trapezoid at the bottom. The conflicts in South Asia exhibit a tendency of similar aggregation, and their distribution is affected by the surrounding region. The secondary administrative regions with positive spatial autocorrelation accounted for about 1/5 of the total, and the aggregate effect of war events was the most significant, andthat of armed conflict events was weak. The distribution of H-H clustering regions for each event type was inconsistent, but L-L clustering regions were mainly distributed in the center of the continent. (2) The distribution range of conflict intensity first increased and then decreased, reaching the maximum in 2017. In Pakistan, there were many areas of conflict intensity distribution, which did not change significantly at the end of the period. In India, the range of conflict intensity distribution first increased and then decreased. The intensity hot spots first spread to Baluchistan, and then shifted to the northeast and southeast, forming two hotspots centered on Kashmir and Chhattisgarh in 2020, with no cold spots. At present, the activities of non-state actors are more fluid and involve more areas, so it is difficult to form new hotspots. Kashmir will remain a hotspot of conflict, and the concentration trend of Chhattisgarh will decline. Baluchistan should be watched closely. (3) The regional conflicts in South Asia are affected by political parties, and power, identity, natural, and other factors. The source of the conflicts is the differences in national identity and religious belief, and they are promoted by state actors, ethnic separatist organizations, religious extremist organizations, and other actors. State factors play a leading role, while the religious and ethnic factors are intractable diseases. The current study has the following limitations. First, this study utilized a large amount of data, with more loyal manual participation in data fusion, cleaning and other work, and there is room for further improvement of accuracy. Second, the driving mechanism of South Asia has not been deeply discussed. The causes of conflicts in South Asia are complicated, and quantitative detection is the next research direction.

Abstract

Background Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a group of liver diseases related to metabolic stresses. Studies have shown that serum potassium is closely related to MAFLD. However, their relationship in gout patients remains unclear. Objective To investigate the relationship between serum potassium and MAFLD in gout patients, to provide a theoretical basis for the management of serum potassium in gout patients. Methods A total of 347 primary gout patients were recruited from Chu Hsien-I Memorial Hospital, Tianjin Medical University from April 2014 to March 2017. They were divided into simple gout group (n=96) , mild fatty liver group (n=136) and moderate-to-severe fatty liver group (n=115) according to the severity of fatty liver to compare baseline data, serum biochemical indices, overweight/obesity and insulin resistance indices. Spearman rank correlation was used to study the relationship between serum potassium level and the severity of fatty liver. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis was used to identify influencing factors of MAFLD in gout. Results Two hundred and fifty-one (72.3%) of the 347 gout patients had MAFLD. Spearman rank correlation analysis demonstrated that serum potassium level was negatively correlated with the severity of fatty liver, fasting blood glucose (FBG) , triglyceride (TG) , body mass index (BMI) , waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (rs=-0.172, -0.118, -0.182, -0.222, -0.174, -0.197, P

Abstract

This paper considers an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided multiple-input single-output communication system, where statistical channel state information (CSI) is exploited for transmit beamforming and IRS beamforming. A tight upper bound is derived for the ergodic capacity of the system. Based on which, the joint optimization of transmit beam and IRS beam are studied. Depending on whether a line-of-sight path exists between the access point and user, two different cases, namely, Rician fading and Rayleigh fading, are separately treated. Specifically, for the Rician fading case, an iterative algorithm is proposed, which is guaranteed to converge. For the Rayleigh fading case, closed-form designs are obtained for the transmit beam and IRS beam. Abstract

This letter presents a detailed performance analysis of the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided single-input single-output communication systems, taking into account of the direct link between the transmitter and receiver. A closed-form upper bound is derived for the ergodic capacity, and an accurate approximation is obtained for the outage probability. In addition, simplified expressions are presented in the asymptotic regime. Numerical results are provided to validate the correctness of the theoretical analysis. It is found that increasing the number of reflecting elements can significantly boost the ergodic capacity and outage probability performance, and a strong line-of-sight component is also beneficial. In addition, it is desirable to deploy the IRS close to the transmitter or receiver, rather than in the middle.
