Abstract

BACKGROUND: Plutella xylostella has developed resistance to a variety of pesticides in the field. Selection, inheritance, a near‐isogenic line, cross‐resistance and biochemical mechanisms of pyridalyl resistance were characterized in a field‐collected resistant population of P. xylostella from China. RESULTS: Compared with a susceptible IVF‐S strain, the field‐collected FZ population showed ~ 350‐fold resistance to pyridalyl. The FZ‐PY strain, selected from the FZ population using pyridalyl, developed ~ 640‐fold resistance to pyridalyl. Inheritance tests indicated that pyridalyl resistance in the FZ‐PY strain was autosomal and incompletely recessive. Through successive backcrossing to IVF‐S, a near‐isogenic strain (NIL‐PY) was established that exhibited 191.21‐fold resistance to pyridalyl and no cross‐resistance to other tested popular insecticides. No significant effects of synergists and higher activities of metabolic enzymes were observed in NIL‐PY compared with IVF‐S. Furthermore, the survival rate of NIL‐PY larvae, and female oviposition, fecundity and egg viability were markedly reduced in NIL‐PY compared with IVF‐S. The fitness of NIL‐PY was found to be 0.56 compared with IVF‐S. CONCLUSION: Considering that no relevant effects of synergists or oxidative metabolism were observed in NIL‐PY, and that pyridalyl resistance results in significant fitness costs compared with IVF‐S, further research will be conducted on the mechanism of target‐site resistance. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: To explore the effectiveness and safety of vitrectomy for congenital cataract surgery. Methods: We searched PubMed, Science Direct, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and the Wanfang Database. Two researchers extracted data and assessed paper quality independently. Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) or visual axis opacification (VAO), reoperation rate, visual acuity, intraocular lenses (IOL) deposit, synechias, uveitis, secondary glaucoma, low‐contrast sensitivity and IOL decentration were compared. Results: We included 11 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 634 congenital cataract eyes. Cases of posterior capsule opacification in vitrectomy group were significantly less than that of control group, with risk ratio (RR) of 0.15 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.09, 0.26], and there was no heterogeneity (I2 = 0%, p = 0.94). Reoperation rate in vitrectomy group was lower than that of control group either (RR = 0.40, 95%CI: 0.17, 0.94), and there was no heterogeneity (I2 = 0%, p = 0.85). Best‐corrected visual acuity (BCVA) measured in LogMAR unit of vitrectomy group was smaller, with a mean difference (MD) of −0.17 (95%CI: −0.28, −0.05), and I2 was only 22%, indicating of a small heterogeneity. No statistical difference was found between two groups on IOL deposit (RR = 1.23, 95%CI: 0.70, 2.17), and the heterogeneity was small (I2 = 16%, p = 0.31). No statistical difference was found between two groups on synechias (RR = 1.08, 95%CI: 0.60, 1.94), with a quite small heterogeneity (I2 = 3%, p = 0.38). No statistical difference was found between two groups on uveitis (RR = 0.55, 95%CI: 0.15, 2.01), and there was no heterogeneity (I2 = 0%, p = 0.94). There was no statistical difference on IOP either, with a MD of 0.25 (95%CI: −1.56, 2.07), and there was no heterogeneity (I2 = 0%). Egger's test showed that there was no publication bias for all assessed outcomes. Low‐contrast sensitivity was better in the vitrectomy group. And no evidence indicated vitrectomy could lead to a higher risk on secondary glaucoma or IOL decentration. Conclusion: Vitrectomy helps lower the PCO risk and reoperation risk after congenital cataract surgery, and also, vitrectomy helps patients gain a better BCVA and achieve a better low‐contrast sensitivity, with no trade‐off on IOP control, IOL deposit, synechias, uveitis and secondary glaucoma. Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to analyze the clinical phenotypes of a girl with oculo-facio-cardio-dental (OFCD) syndrome and to identify the potential pathogenic mutation responsible for her disease. The patient underwent detailed clinical examinations and phenotype data were collected over a follow-up period of 9 years. Mutation analysis of the candidate gene BCORwas performed with polymerase chain reaction and Sanger sequencing. BCORof 60 unrelated normal individuals were also sequenced as a control group. Clinical phenotyping and follow-up study results indicate that this patient had multiple system anomalies including ocular, facial, cardiac, dental, and limb malformations. In addition, papilloma of the choroid plexus was identified, which represents the first report of this phenotype in an OFCD patient. A novel deletion mutation, c.1296delT in exon 4 of the BCORgene, was identified in this patient and was not found in her parents or in 60 normal unrelated individuals. This deletion was a frameshift mutation and is proposed to encode a premature stop codon, thus producing a truncated protein. Our patient fitted the diagnostic criteria for OFCD syndrome and we report the first papilloma of the choroid plexus in an OFCD patient, expanding the recognized phenotypic spectrum of this disease. Meanwhile, we identified a novel deletion mutation that may cause OFCD syndrome.

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the predictors of tissue prolapse after stenting and whether this phenomenon can affect the clinical outcome. Methods: All consecutive patients who underwent optical coherence tomography (OCT) examination after stent implantation were included. Qualitative and quantitative assessment of tissue prolapse after stent implantation was performed. The lesions were classified into 4 groups according to the severity of tissue prolapse. We analyzed the clinical, procedural, and image-based predictors of severe tissue prolapse and evaluated the clinical impact of tissue prolapse. Results: Tissue prolapse within the stented segment was visible in 102/104 (98.08%) cases. The frequency and severity of tissue prolapse was similar in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and non-ACS lesions. The OCT-defined thin cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) was related with severe tissue prolapse (≧grade III) (r = 17.722, p < 0.001). No difference in events was observed among different tissue prolapse groups during the hospitalization period and 1-year follow-up. Conclusions: The incidence of tissue prolapse after stent implantation was relatively high, irrespective of the clinical presentation. OCT-defined TCFA lesions were more likely with severe tissue prolapse (≧grade III). Tissue prolapse was not associated with clinical events during the hospitalization period and 1-year clinical follow-up.

Abstract

Objective The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the plaque morphology can affect the in-stent neointimal hyperplasia. Methods 74 patients (93 stents) with OCT post-stent implantation were included in the study. Cross-sectional OCT images were analysed at 1-mm intervals (every 15 frames), and 302 cross-sectional images with lipid or calcific lesions under the stent struts were selected. The struts in these sections were divided into four groups according to the plaque conditions under the struts: group 1—struts on the normal vessel, group 2—on the fibrotic lesion, group 3—on the calcific lesion, group 4—on the lipid rich lesion. The neointimal hyperplasia thickness on the stent struts were measured by OCT. Results The plaque conditions under 806 struts could be detected clearly by OCT. Among them, 157 struts were on the normal vascular wall (the intimal thickness were less than 250 μm by OCT), 344 struts were on the fibrotic lesions, 145 struts on calcific lesions and 160 struts on lipid lesions. The neointimal thickness were 0.132±0.081 μm, 0.148±0.091 μm, 0.150±0.105 μm and 0.166±0.088 μm respectively in group 1–4. The p value was 0.011. Conclusions The plaque type has impact on the in-stent neointimal hyperplasia. The underlying lipid or calcific components in plaque may promote neointimal hyperplasia after stent implantation.

Abstract

Introduction. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (BMSCs) have emerged as promising cell candidates but with poor survival after transplantation. This study was designed to investigate the efficacy of VEGF, bFGF, and IGF-1 on BMSCs’ viability and proliferation both in vivo and in vitro using bioluminescence imaging (BLI). Methods. BMSCs were isolated from β-actin-Fluc+ transgenic FVB mice, which constitutively express firefly luciferase. Apoptosis was induced by hypoxia preconditioning for up to 24 h followed by flow cytometry and TUNEL assay. 106 BMSCs with/without growth factors were injected subcutaneously into wild type FVB mice’s backs. Survival of BMSCs was longitudinally monitored using bioluminescence imaging (BLI) for 5 weeks. Protein expression of Akt, p-Akt, PARP, and caspase-3 was detected by Western blot. Results. Hypoxia-induced apoptosis was significantly attenuated by bFGF and IGF-1 compared with VEGF and control group in vitro (P<0.05). When combined with matrigel, IGF-1 showed the most beneficial effects in protecting BMSCs from apoptosis in vivo. The phosphorylation of Akt had a higher ratio in the cells from IGF-1 group. Conclusion. IGF-1 could protect BMSCs from hypoxia-induced apoptosis through activation of p-Akt/Akt pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess the association between the level of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and the increase in blood pressure (BP) for different exposure terms (≤ 7 vs > 7 days) and age groups (< 65 vs ≥ 65 years). Some databases were searched to investigate the association between increased atmospheric PM (diameter < 2.5 mm [PM2.5] or < 10 mm [PM10]) and BP (systolic blood pressure [SBP] and diastolic blood pressure [DBP]). Among a total of 719 identified articles, 68 were reviewed in depth, of which only 20 satisfied the inclusion criteria. A significant association was found between PM10levels and higher BP. The β values were 0.270mmHg (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.068–0.482) for SBP and 0.215mmHg (95% CI 0.058–0.372) for DBP. These β values mean that, for every 10 mg/m3increase in PM10, SBP increased by 0.270mmHg and DBP by 0.215 mmHg. Subgroup analyses were conducted for different exposure terms and age groups. A positive association was seen between PM2.5and SBP. The β value of SBP was 0.495mmHg (95% CI 0.03–0.96) with every 10 mg/m3increase in PM2.5. There were no significant associations in both age groups and non-older groups. There was no significant association between PM2.5and DBP, either in the overall effect or in the subgroup effects. In conclusion, significant associations were found between higher BP and higher PM10levels, but the association between BP and levels of PM2.5levels was unclear. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract: Nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emissions were measured using a static chamber method in two adjacent plots of freshwater marsh predominated by Calamagrostis angustifolia, one is seasonal waterlogged (SW) and the other without surface water accumulation (NW), in Sanjiang Plain wetland (47°35’N, 133°31’E), northeast China, during 2002–2004. The diurnal and seasonal flux variations of both gases were significantly correlated with 5-cm-soil temperature. The NW marsh is a source of N2O and sink of CH4, while the SW marsh is sink of N2O and source of CH4. Remarkably, we observed a N2O emission peak under Eh of −300 to −100 mV, and CH4 emission peak under Eh of +300 to +400 mV, which indicate additional sources of N2O and CH4 for the freeze-thaw induced emission peaks of N2O and CH4 observed between late July and early August. Further study shows that the additional N2O and CH4 were emitted under the frozen soil after thawing.
