Abstract

Byline: A.B. Yu, G.X. Wang, S.J. Chew, P. Zulli A mathematical model is presented to describe the discrete flow of liquid within and below the blast furnace cohesive zone. The model is developed based on a force balance approach to describe the liquid flow and a stochastic treatment to take into account the complex packing structure. The interaction between gas and liquid flows has been included in the governing equations, so that the localised liquid flow in a packed bed can be modelled with or without gas flow. The validity is demonstrated by comparing model predictions and measurements obtained under different gas and/or liquid flow conditions. Application of the model to blast furnace is discussed with reference to the interaction between gas and liquid phases and the effect of cohesive zone shape.

Abstract

Variability in Florida phosphate feed to the flotation plant can result in a 10-50% decrease in P2O5 recovery and/or a reduction in P2O5 concentrate grade. Samples of refractory and easily floatable ore from the same mining area in central Florida were characterised and submitted to bench flotation tests using fatty acids. It was found that the fatty acid surface coverage for the refractory ore was between 6.9 and 9.8%, corresponding respectively to 0 and 80% recovery; whereas the easy-to- float ore showed surface coverage of 17.2% (89% recovery) to 24.6% (98% recovery). As there was little difference in size, surface area or pore size, it was thought that the differences could be caused by the adsorption of natural compounds.
