Abstract

Sowohl experimentell als auch numerisch wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit der Einfluss von oszillierenden Hinterkantenklappen auf das Nachlaufwirbelsystem einer Transportflugzeugkonfiguration analysiert. Der Staffelungsabstand kann dadurch zwischen zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Flugzeugen um bis zu 26 Flugzeugspannweiten verkürzt werden. Außerdem wird durch die Maßnahme das induzierte Rollmoment, auf ein in die Wirbelschleppe einfliegendes Flugzeug, um bis zu 33% vermindert., Both experimentally and numerically, the influence of oscillating trailing edge flaps on the wake vortex system of a transport aircraft configuration is analyzed in this thesis. As a result, the separation distance between two following aircraft can be shortened by up to 26 spans. In addition, the method reduces the induced rolling moment, on an aircraft entering the wake vortex, by up to 33%.

66. A Direct Infection Risk Model for CFD Predictions and Its Application to SARS-CoV-2 Aircraft Cabin Transmission.

Abstract

Current models to determine the risk of airborne disease infection are typically based on a backward quantification of observed infections, leading to uncertainties, e.g., due to the lack of knowledge whether the index person was a superspreader. In contrast, the present work presents a forward infection risk model that calculates the inhaled dose of infectious virus based on the virus emission rate of an emitter and a prediction of Lagrangian particle trajectories using CFD, taking both the residence time of individual particles and the biodegradation rate into account. The estimation of the dose-response is then based on data from human challenge studies. Considering the available data for SARS-CoV-2 from the literature, it is shown that the model can be used to estimate the risk of infection with SARS-CoV-2 in the cabin of a Do728 single-aisle aircraft. However, the virus emission rate during normal breathing varies between different studies and also by about two orders of magnitude within one and the same study. A sensitivity analysis shows that the uncertainty in the input parameters leads to uncertainty in the prediction of the infection risk, which is between 0 and 12 infections among 70 passengers. This highlights the importance and challenges in terms of superspreaders for risk prediction, which are difficult to capture using standard backward calculations. Further, biological inactivation was found to have no significant impact on the risk of infection for SARS-CoV-2 in the considered aircraft cabin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Utilizing the Boussinesq approximation, a double-population incompressible thermal lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for forced and natural convection in two and three space dimensions is developed and validated. A block-structured dynamic adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) procedure tailored for the LBM is applied to enable computationally efficient simulations of moderate to high Rayleigh number flows which are characterized by a large scale disparity in boundary layers and free stream flow. As test cases, the analytically accessible problem of a two-dimensional (2D) forced convection flow through two porous plates and the non-Cartesian configuration of a heated rotating cylinder are considered. The objective of the latter is to advance the boundary conditions for an accurate treatment of curved boundaries and to demonstrate the effect on the solution. The effectiveness of the overall approach is demonstrated for the natural convection benchmark of a 2D cavity with differentially heated walls at Rayleigh numbers from 103 up to 108. To demonstrate the benefit of the employed AMR procedure for three-dimensional (3D) problems, results from the natural convection in a cubic cavity at Rayleigh numbers from 103 up to 105 are compared with benchmark results.
