Tracking dialogue states is an essential topic in task-oriented dialogue systems, which involve filling in the necessary information in pre-defined slots corresponding to a schema. While general pre-trained language models have been shown effective in slot-filling, their performance is limited when applied to specific domains. We propose a graph-based framework that learns domain-specific prompts by incorporating the dialogue schema. Specifically, we embed domain-specific schema encoded by a graph neural network into the pre-trained language model, which allows for relations in the schema to guide the model for better adaptation to the specific domain. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed graph-based method outperforms other multi-domain DST approaches while using similar or fewer trainable parameters. We also conduct a comprehensive study of schema graph architectures, parameter usage, and module ablation that demonstrate the effectiveness of our model on multi-domain dialogue state tracking.

The recent boom in crowdsourcing has opened up a new avenue for utilizing human intelligence in the realm of data analysis. This innovative approach provides a powerful means for connecting online workers to tasks that cannot effectively be done solely by machines or conducted by professional experts due to cost constraints. Within the field of social science, four elements are required to construct a sound crowd - Diversity of Opinion, Independence, Decentralization and Aggregation. However, while the other three components have already been investigated and implemented in existing crowdsourcing platforms, 'Diversity of Opinion' has not been functionally enabled yet. From a computational point of view, constructing a wise crowd necessitates quantitatively modeling and taking diversity into account. There are usually two paradigms in a crowdsourcing marketplace for worker selection: building a crowd to wait for tasks to come and selecting workers for a given task. We propose similarity-driven and task-driven models for both paradigms. Also, we develop efficient and effective algorithms for recruiting a limited number of workers with optimal diversity in both models. Large-scale conversational systems typically rely on a skill-routing component to route a user request to an appropriate skill and interpretation to serve the request. In such system, the agent is responsible for serving thousands of skills and interpretations which create a long-tail distribution due to the natural frequency of requests. For example, the samples related to play music might be a thousand times more frequent than those asking for theatre show times. Moreover, inputs used for ML-based skill routing are often a heterogeneous mix of strings, embedding vectors, categorical and scalar features which makes employing augmentation-based long-tail learning approaches challenging. To improve the skill-routing robustness, we propose an augmentation of heterogeneous skill-routing data and training targeted for robust operation in long-tail data regimes. We explore a variety of conditional encoder-decoder generative frameworks to perturb original data fields and create synthetic training data. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conduct extensive experiments using real-world data from a commercial conversational system. Based on the experiment results, the proposed approach improves more than 80% (51 out of 63) of intents with less than 10K of traffic instances in the skill-routing replication task.

Deep learning (DL) techniques are highly effective for defect detection from images. Training DL classification models, however, requires vast amounts of labeled data which is often expensive to collect. In many cases, not only the available training data is limited but may also imbalanced. In this paper, we propose a novel domain adaptation (DA) approach to address the problem of labeled training data scarcity for a target learning task by transferring knowledge gained from an existing source dataset used for a similar learning task. Our approach works for scenarios where the source dataset and the dataset available for the target learning task have same or different feature spaces. We combine our DA approach with an autoencoder-based data augmentation approach to address the problem of imbalanced target datasets. We evaluate our combined approach using image data for wafer defect prediction. The experiments show its superior performance against other algorithms when the number of labeled samples in the target dataset is significantly small and the target dataset is imbalanced.

Models trained with empirical risk minimization (ERM) are revealed to easily rely on spurious correlations, resulting in poor generalization. Group distributionally robust optimization (group DRO) can alleviate this problem by minimizing the worst-case loss over pre-defined groups. While promising, in practice factors like expensive annotations and privacy preclude the availability of group labels. More crucially, when taking a closer look at the failure modes of out-of-distribution generalization, the typical procedure of reweighting in group DRO loses efficiency. Hinged on the limitations, in this work, we reformulate the group DRO framework by proposing Q-Diversity. Characterized by an interactive training mode, Q-Diversity relaxes the group identification from annotation into direct parameterization. Furthermore, a novel mixing strategy across groups is presented to diversify the under-represented groups. In a series of experiments on both synthetic and real-world text classification tasks, results demonstrate that Q-Diversity can consistently improve worst-case accuracy under different distributional shifts, outperforming state-of-the-art alternatives., Comment: Findings of ACL 2023

Discontinuities can be fairly arbitrary but also cause a significant impact on outcomes in larger systems. Indeed, their arbitrariness is why they have been used to infer causal relationships among variables in numerous settings. Regression discontinuity from econometrics assumes the existence of a discontinuous variable that splits the population into distinct partitions to estimate the causal effects of a given phenomenon. Here we consider the design of partitions for a given discontinuous variable to optimize a certain effect previously studied using regression discontinuity. To do so, we propose a quantization-theoretic approach to optimize the effect of interest, first learning the causal effect size of a given discontinuous variable and then applying dynamic programming for optimal quantization design of discontinuities to balance the gain and loss in that effect size. We also develop a computationally-efficient reinforcement learning algorithm for the dynamic programming formulation of optimal quantization. We demonstrate our approach by designing optimal time zone borders for counterfactuals of social capital, social mobility, and health. The principle of continual relation extraction~(CRE) involves adapting to emerging novel relations while preserving od knowledge. While current endeavors in CRE succeed in preserving old knowledge, they tend to fail when exposed to contaminated data streams. We assume this is attributed to their reliance on an artificial hypothesis that the data stream has no annotation errors, which hinders real-world applications for CRE. Considering the ubiquity of noisy labels in real-world datasets, in this paper, we formalize a more practical learning scenario, termed as \textit{noisy-CRE}. Building upon this challenging setting, we develop a noise-resistant contrastive framework named as \textbf{N}oise-guided \textbf{a}ttack in \textbf{C}ontrative \textbf{L}earning~(NaCL) to learn incremental corrupted relations. Compared to direct noise discarding or inaccessible noise relabeling, we present modifying the feature space to match the given noisy labels via attacking can better enrich contrastive representations. Extensive empirical validations highlight that NaCL can achieve consistent performance improvements with increasing noise rates, outperforming state-of-the-art baselines.

We present the first detailed photometric analysis of ATO J108.6991+27.8306 (hereinafter as J108). The short-period close binary J108 was observed by the Nanshan 1 m Wide Field Telescope of the Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory. The obtained BVRI-band light curves were used to determine the photometric solution by using the 2003 version of the Wilson-Devinney code. J108 is a typical deep ( f > 50%), low mass ratio (q < 0.25) overcontact binary system with a mass ratio of q = 0.1501 and a fill-out factor of f = 50.1 %, suggesting that it is in the late evolutionary stage of contact binary systems. We found the target to be a W-type W UMa binary and provided evidence for the presence of starspots on both components. From the temperature-luminosity diagram, the main component is the evolved main sequence star with an evolutionary age of about 7.94 Gyr., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

With the demanding need for deploying dialogue systems in new domains with less cost, zero-shot dialogue state tracking (DST), which tracks user's requirements in task-oriented dialogues without training on desired domains, draws attention increasingly. Although prior works have leveraged question-answering (QA) data to reduce the need for in-domain training in DST, they fail to explicitly model knowledge transfer and fusion for tracking dialogue states. To address this issue, we propose CoFunDST, which is trained on domain-agnostic QA datasets and directly uses candidate choices of slot-values as knowledge for zero-shot dialogue-state generation, based on a T5 pre-trained language model. Specifically, CoFunDST selects highly-relevant choices to the reference context and fuses them to initialize the decoder to constrain the model outputs. Our experimental results show that our proposed model achieves outperformed joint goal accuracy compared to existing zero-shot DST approaches in most domains on the MultiWOZ 2.1.
