Quantum Physics - Abstract
Measurement combined with feedback that aims to restore a presumed pre-measurement quantum state will yield this state after a few measurement-feedback cycles even if the actual state of the system initially had no resemblance to the presumed state. Here we introduce this mechanism of {\it self-fulfilling prophecy} and show that it can be used to prepare finite-dimensional quantum systems in target states or target dynamics. Using two-level systems as an example we demonstrate that self-fulfilling prophecy protects the system against noise and tolerates imprecision of feedback up to the level of the measurement strength. By means of unsharp measurements the system can be driven deterministically into arbitrary, smooth quantum trajectories., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Noodtoestand.

Practical Theology ,BV1-5099 ,Moral theology ,BV4625-4780 - Abstract
In this article the author discusses the theoretical background to a right to information. Recent events as the restriction on information regarding the 1975-1976 Angolan war, the Information Scandal in 1977-1978, and the regulations regarding the distribution of information during the present state of emergency are only some examples of the way in which the state withholds information from the individual. Very few countries in the world can claim domestic peace. Economical, political and social affairs have to be adapted constantly. In this process the administration of the state grows, and with it, bureaucracy. Private concerns group together and form powerful organizations. The individual plays an increasingly insignificant role in this society and his rights and liberties are encroached upon in a variety of ways.

Practical Theology ,BV1-5099 ,Moral theology ,BV4625-4780 - Abstract
In this article the author deals with the ethico-judiciary aspects of illegitimacy. Because of the stigma clinging to the illegitimate child, certain constraints have been imposed from the side of the authorities as well. These are then examined. Following a definition of the concept, the results of illegitimacy are considered in terms of the status of the child, its maintenance, inheritance, as well as certain non-juridical factors such as social, biological, religious and ethical factors. The important question of attitudes towards illegitimacy is then considered, with reference to changed attitudes in certain overseas countries, such as America, the Scandinavian countries, Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, and finally South Africa. It emerges then that a more sympathetic attitude towards both the child and the mother is evolving, in South Africa too. The changed attitudes of the community, however, do not suspend the constraints imposed upon the child by the law. The author feels, however, that as a result of the state's involvement with the problem of illegitimacy, the problem has shifted from the ethical to the field of the state, and the state now has to act to redress the balance. The author is of the opinion, further, that legislation should be developed to eliminate the legal constraints - if a sanction needs to be imposed, it should be imposed on the parents and not on the child. It is therefore noted with satisfaction that the Law Commission has proposed a Draft Bill in this regard to remove the legal constraints upon the illegitimate child .

Transcription is theory.l This inevitable conclusion has been brought home ever more forcefully in the years since Ochs' seminal article (7979), as our awareness of the tangible shape of discourse has sharpened, and as the push to comprehend language in relation to use has whetted appetites for more and more new discourse materiaF-transcribed with a penpicacity and insight that can nourish new theories with the vital information they need to grow. How we transcribe doesn't just reflect our theories of language, it also shapes them, drawing our eyes to some phenomena while leaving others in shadow. We know this, and yet surprisingly little has been written that might help discourse theorists think about how to get a discourse transcription to do what they want it to do (but see Ochs 1979, Edwards 1989 and forthcoming, Edwards and l-ampert forthcoming). Partly this involves unsessing what a discourse transcription needs to do, and partly it involves figuring out how to frame a system that can do it.

Drug Discovery ,Molecular Medicine - Abstract
Doxorubicin is a chemotherapeutic medication commonly used to treat many types of cancers, but it has side effects including vomiting, rash, hair loss, and bone marrow suppression. The most dangerous side effects are cardiomyopathy, cardiofibrosis, and heart failure, as doxorubicin generates cytotoxicity and stops DNA replication. There is no treatment to block these side effects. We have developed a transgenic mouse line overexpressing the circular RNA circNlgn and shown that circNlgn is a mediator of doxorubicin-induced cardiofibrosis. Increased expression of circNlgn decreased cardiac function and induced cardiofibrosis by upregulating Gadd45b, Sema4C, and RAD50 and activating p38 and pJNK in circNlgn transgenic heart. Silencing circNlgn decreased the effects of doxorubicin on cardiac cell activities and prevented doxorubicin-induced expression of fibrosis-associated molecules. The protein (Nlgn173) translated by circNlgn could bind and activate H2AX, producing γH2AX, resulting in upregulation of IL-1b, IL-2Rb, IL-6, EGR1, and EGR3. We showed that silencing these molecules in the signaling pathway prevented doxorubicin-induced cardiomyocyte apoptosis, increased cardiomyocyte viability, decreased cardiac fibroblast proliferation, and inhibited collagen production. This mechanism may hold therapeutic implications for mitigating the side effects of doxorubicin therapy in cancer patients.

Lithography-based ceramic manufacturing (LCM) is an additive manufacturing (AM) technology that builds custom-designed, three)dimensional ceramic parts layer by layer. The level of precision of the process allows for the printing of custom-made interconnected lattices and designs suitable for bone implants. This study investigated the LCM printability of various lattice structures with the hydroxyapatite (HA480) supplied by Lithoz. Different lattice structures were characterised. The microscopic structure, the composition, and the surface roughness of the test specimens were determined. To obtain the mechanical properties of the structures, compression tests were performed. The observed micropores of ±3 µm and the macropores of ±320 µm were suitable for bone cell growth. The measured microhardness of HA480 was 556±25 HV in the built direction and 559±27 HV perpendicular to the built direction. The compressive strength of the rhombic dodecahedron lattice structure was 4±0.5 MPa, and was superior to other tested lattices. From the results it was concluded that lattice structures produced through LCM have the potential to be used to produce customised bone-regenerating scaffolds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Young sub-Saharan African and developing-world patients with rheumatic heart valve diseases urgently require cost-effective prosthetic valves. To design cost-effective polyurethane heart valves, comprehend haemodynamic behaviour, expedite prototype development, and reduce the need for clinical testing for functional evaluation, the implementation of an experimental test digital twinning is essential. The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) to improve heart valve replacement designs rapidly, in order to comply with the minimum requirements of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) regulations and specifications, forms the core of this study. This approach is presented, and the results are discussed. A conclusion is drawn about the valve geometric orifice area (GOA) compared with experimental tests. When the valve was fully opened, there was only an 11% difference between the computed experimental and the finite element GOA. Digital simulation revealed additional information such as the locations of stress concentrations. The FE results showed reasonable similarity with in vitro results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Using pp collision data at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV, recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb −1, the forward-backward asymmetry in the pp → Z/γ * → μ + μ − process is measured. The measurement is carried out in ten intervals of the difference between the muon pseudorapidities, within a fiducial region covering dimuon masses between 66 and 116 GeV, muon pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 and muon transverse momenta above 20 GeV. These forward-backward asymmetries are compared with predictions, at next-to-leading order in the strong and electroweak couplings. The measured effective leptonic weak mixing angle is sin 2 θ eff ℓ = 0.23147 ± 0.00044 ± 0.00005 ± 0.00023 , $$ {\sin}^2{\theta}_{\textrm{eff}}^{\ell }=0.23147\pm 0.00044\pm 0.00005\pm 0.00023, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second arises from systematic uncertainties associated with the asymmetry measurement, and the third arises from uncertainties in the fit model used to extract sin 2 θ eff ℓ $$ {\sin}^2{\theta}_{\textrm{eff}}^{\ell } $$ from the asymmetry measurement. This result is based on an arithmetic average of results using the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF31 parameterisations of the proton internal structure, and is consistent with previous measurements and with predictions from the global electroweak fit.

Abstract: The radiative decays χc1(3872) → ψ(2S) γ and χc1(3872) → J/ψγ are used to probe the nature of the χc1(3872) state using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1. Using the B+ → χc1(3872)K+ decay, the χc1(3872) → ψ(2S) γ process is observed for the first time and the ratio of its partial width to that of the χc1(3872) → J/ψγ decay is measured to be Γ χ c 1 3872 → ψ 2 S γ Γ χ c 1 3872 → J / ψ γ = 1.67 ± 0.21 ± 0.12 ± 0.04 , $$ \frac{\Gamma_{\chi_{c1}(3872)\to \uppsi \left(2\textrm{S}\right)\gamma }}{\Gamma_{\chi_{c1}(3872)\to \textrm{J}/\uppsi \gamma }}=1.67\pm 0.21\pm 0.12\pm 0.04, $$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the ψ(2S) and J/ψ mesons. The measured ratio makes the interpretation of the χc1(3872) state as a pure D0 D ¯ ∗ 0 $$ {\overline{\textrm{D}}}^{\ast 0} $$ + D ¯ 0 $$ {\overline{\textrm{D}}}^0 $$ D*0 molecule questionable and strongly indicates a sizeable compact charmonium or tetraquark component within the χc1(3872) state.

Abstract The Fourier harmonics, $$v_2$$ v 2 and $$v_3$$ v 3 of negative pions are measured at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$$ s NN = 17.3 GeV around midrapidity by the CERES/NA45 experiment at the CERN SPS in 0–30% central PbAu collisions with a mean centrality of 5.5%. The analysis is performed in two centrality bins as a function of the transverse momentum $$\mathrm {p_{\textrm{T}}}$$ p T from 0.05 GeV/c to more than 2 GeV/c. This is the first measurement of the $$v^{1/3}_{3}/v^{1/2}_{2}$$ v 3 1 / 3 / v 2 1 / 2 ratio as a function of transverse momentum at SPS energies, that reveals, independently of the hydrodynamic models, hydrodynamic behavior of the formed system. For $$\mathrm {p_{\textrm{T}}}$$ p T above 0.5 GeV/c, the ratio is nearly flat in accordance with the hydrodynamic prediction and as previously observed by the ATLAS and ALICE experiments at the much higher LHC energies. The results are also compared with the SMASH-vHLLE hybrid model predictions, as well as with the SMASH model applied alone.

Abstract The decays of the χb1(1P), χb2(1P), χb1(2P) and χb2(2P) mesons into the Υ(1S)μ+μ − final state are observed with a high significance using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb −1. The newly observed decays together with the Υ(2S) → Υ(1S)π+π − and Υ(3S) → Υ(2S)π+π − decay modes are used for precision measurements of the mass and mass splittings for the hidden-beauty states.

Abstract The majority of available climate data in global digital archives consist of data only from the 1940s or 1950s onwards, and many of these series have gaps and/or are available for only a subset of the variables which were actually observed. However, there exist billions of historical weather observations from the 1700s, 1800s, and early 1900s that are still in hard‐copy form and are at risk of being lost forever due to deterioration. An assessment of changes in climate extremes in several IPCC regions was not possible in IPCC AR6 WGI owing, in many cases, to the lack of available data. One such region is Africa, where the climate impact research and the ability to predict climate change impacts are hindered by the paucity of access to consistent good‐quality historical observational data. The aim of this innovative project was to use classroom‐based participatory learning to help transcribe some of the many meteorological observations from Africa that are thus far unavailable to researchers. This project transcribed quickly and effectively station series by enrolling the help of second‐year undergraduate students at Maynooth University in Ireland. The newly digitized African data will increase the temporal and spatial coverage of data in this important data‐sparse region. Students gained new skills while helping the global scientific community unearth new insight into past African climate. The project managed to transcribe 79 months of data at Andapa in Madagascar and 56 months of data for Macenta in Guinea. The digitized data will be openly and freely shared with the scientific and wider community via the Pangaea data repository, the C3S Climate Data Store, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) data centre in the US. The project model has the potential for a broader roll‐out to other educational contexts and there is no shortage of data to be rescued. This paper provides details of the project, and all supporting information such as project guidelines and templates to enable other organizations to instigate similar programs.

- Abstract
Ti6Al4V is commonly used in the aerospace, medical and automotive industries due to its high strength-to-weight ratio and excellent corrosion resistance properties. Interstitial impurities in Ti6Al4V powder, particularly oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and iron, have an impact on mechanical properties. After Ti6Al4V powder has been re-used several times in direct metal laser sintering build processes, it will eventually reach its end of life due to its physical and chemical properties deteriorating out of specification. Such powder can be reconditioned using an inductively coupled plasma system. In this study, the reconditioning of the contaminated powder was done using an inductively coupled plasma system and characterisation of the Ti6Al4V powder was done before and after reconditioning. Conclusions are drawn on the feasibility of utilising an inductively coupled plasma system for reconditioning of contaminated Ti6Al4V powder.

- Abstract
Various researchers have investigated the use of experimental melt pool characterization to speed up the optimisation process of selective laser melting parameters and found this to be possible. From their studies, it has become clear that the incorporation of modelling into this approach could provide efficient and predictable results that would minimise the experimental validation work required. This paper reports on progress made towards characterising the melt pool through simulation. The development of a numerical model is discussed. Subsequently, experimental validation of the numerical model is presented. This is done through a comparison of the simulation results with the experimentally determined cross-sectional geometry of single tracks created with various sets of process parameters. Melt pool size and shape are considered. Based on these results, it is concluded that using an identical simulation setup, verified simulation method, and verified material properties, it was possible to accurately determine the melt pool geometry for some, but not all process parameters.

During the laser additive manufacturing (LAM) process large temperature gradients can form, generating a mismatch in deformation that can lead to high level of residual stress. The stress can have irreversible effects such as warping and cracking of parts during and post manufacturing. One of the most important LAM parameters that should be controlled carefully in order to effectively manage residual stress is the scanning strategy. This study presents an evaluation of six different scanning strategies, namely reciprocating, 90° reciprocating, line, screwing, reciprocating overlapping and island scanning strategies with respect to their effect on residual stress. Laser ultrasound technology, as an advanced nondestructive testing method, is applied to measure the residual stress distribution under different scanning strategies for the first time. The surface wave generated by laser is used to evaluate the plane stress state within the surface layer of the specimen. The results show that the island scanning strategy is found to contribute to the least average residual stress, and lowered residual stress by up to 45% relative to the line scanning strategy. The overall stress level is island

Cognate interactions between autoreactive B and T cells promote systemic lupus erythematosus pathogenesis by inter alia facilitating spontaneous germinal center (GC) formation. Whereas both myeloid and B cell APCs express B7 ligands (CD80 and CD86), the prevailing model holds that dendritic cell costimulation is sufficient for CD28-dependent T cell activation. In this study, we report that B cell–intrinsic CD80/CD86 deletion unexpectedly abrogates GCs in murine lupus. Interestingly, absent GCs differentially impacted serum autoantibodies. In keeping with distinct extrafollicular and GC activation pathways driving lupus autoantibodies, lack of GCs correlated with loss of RNA-associated autoantibodies but preserved anti-dsDNA and connective tissue autoantibody titers. Strikingly, even heterozygous B cell CD80/CD86 deletion was sufficient to prevent autoimmune GCs and RNA-associated autoantibodies. Together, these findings identify a key mechanism whereby B cells promote lupus pathogenesis by providing a threshold of costimulatory signals required for autoreactive T cell activation.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a group of non-coding RNAs with a unique circular structure generated by back-splicing. It is acknowledged that circRNAs play critical roles in cardiovascular diseases. However, functional studies of circRNAs were impeded due to lack of effective in vivo silencing approaches. Since most circRNAs are produced by protein-coding transcripts, gene editing typically affects the coding activity of the parental genes. In this study, we developed a circular antisense RNA (cA-circSlc8a1) that could silence the highly expressed circRNA circSlc8a1 in the mouse heart but not its parental Slc8a1 linear mRNA. Transgenic cA-circSlc8a1 mice developed congestive heart failure resulting in a significant increase in the body weight secondary to peripheral edema and congestive hepatopathy. To further test the role of circSlc8a1, we generated transgenic mice overexpressing circSlc8a1 and observed a protective effect of circSlc8a1 in a pressure overload model. Mechanistically, we found that circSlc8a1 translocated into mitochondria to drive ATP synthesis. While establishing a transgenic murine model for antisense-mediated circRNA silencing without interfering with the parental linear RNA, our finding revealed the essential role of circSlc8a1 in maintaining heart function and may lay the groundwork of using the circular antisense RNA as a potential gene therapy approach for cardiovascular diseases.

The effects of traction load, plate thickness, and pin radius on stress and deformation distribution were investigated by simulation symmetrical pin traction experiment and analytical calculation methods. At the beginning of traction, both contact angle and maximum stress increase with the traction load. As the traction continues, maximum stress is steady and only the contact angle increases with the traction load. The stress concentration increases with the decrease of pin radius and does not change with other parameters under the same pin radius. The increase of specimen thickness can only reduce the contact angle but does not lessen the stress concentration, and thicker specimens can bear more traction load when reaching the same contact angle. Strengthening during deformation is caused not only by the increase of dislocation density in martensite matrix but also by retained austenite (RA) strain-induced martensite transformation (SIMT), which is conducive to the transfer of plastic deformation.

As the urban population grows and the global economy develops, municipal solid waste management (MSWM) has become an increasingly prominent global issue. MSWM is particularly difficult in developing countries due to its high cost and time-consuming nature. The Environment-based design (EBD) can potentially contribute to global MSWM by reducing costs and increasing efficiency, especially in helping developing countries identify critical issues in MSWM. This paper uses and demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of the EBD method to analyze and identify critical issues in MSWM, using the city of Nairobi as a case study. This paper contains the first two of EBD's three activities: environment analysis and conflict identification, during the design problem period, design knowledge, and design solutions simultaneously and interdependently evolve as a part of the environment. The comparison with the existing literature confirms that the conclusions reached are, to some extent, reliable, time-saving, and less costly, which will offer a possibility to solve the problem of MSWM in impoverished areas.
