Abstract: COMPASS has studied exclusive production of ρ 0 mesons using a 160 GeV/ c muon beam and a transversely polarised NH 3 target. Five single-spin and three double-spin azimuthal aymmetries were measured in dependence on Q 2 , x Bj , or p T 2 . Except the sin ϕ S asymmetry, obtained to be − 0.019 ± 0.008( stat .) ± 0.003( syst .), all others were found to be consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties. Phenomenological GPD-based model calculations agree well with the data and interpret the result as evidence for the existence of chiral-odd, transverse generalised parton distributions.

Abstract: Exclusive production of ηπ− and η π− has been studied with a 191 GeV/c π− beam impinging on a hydrogen target at COMPASS (CERN). Partial-wave analyses reveal different odd/even angular momentum (L) characteristics in the inspected invariant mass range up to 3 GeV/c2. A striking similarity between the two systems is observed for the L = 2, 4, 6 intensities (scaled by kinematical factors) and the relative phases. The known resonances a2(1320) and a4(2040) are in line with this similarity. In contrast, a strong enhancement of η π− over ηπ− is found for the L = 1, 3, 5 waves, which carry non-q¯q quantum numbers. The L = 1 intensity peaks at 1.7 GeV/c2 in η π− and at 1.4 GeV/c2 in ηπ−, the corresponding phase motions with respect to L =2 are different.

Abstract: We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Delta g/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with Q(2) > 1 (GeV/c)(2) including a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV/c polarised muon beam scattering off a polarised (LiD)-Li-6 target. The gluon polarisation is evaluated by a Neural Network approach for three intervals of the gluon momentum fraction x(g) covering the range 0.04 < x(g) < 0.27. The values obtained at leading order in QCD do not show any significant dependence on x(g). Their average is Delta g/g = 0.125 +/- 0.060 (stat.) +/- 0.063 (syst.) at average x(g) = 0.09 and a scale of mu(2) = 3 (GeV/c)(2).

Abstract: The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) in hard exclusive production of rho(0) mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E-q, which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The Q(2), x-B-j and p(T)(2) dependence of A(UT)(sin(phi-phi s)) is presented in a wide kinematic range: 1 (GeV/c)(2) < Q(2) < 10 (GeV/c)(2), 0.003 < xB(j) < 0.3 and 0.05 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for protons or 0.10 (GeV/c)(2) < p(T)(2) < 0.5 (GeV/c)(2) for deuterons. Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E-u and E-d approximately cancel. Abstract: We measured the longitudinal double spin asymmetries $A_{LL}$ for single hadron muo-production off protons and deuterons at photon virtuality $Q^2$ < 1(GeV/$\it c$)$^2$ for transverse hadron momenta $p_T$ in the range 0.7 GeV/$\it c$ to 4 GeV/$\it c$ . They were determined using COMPASS data taken with a polarised muon beam of 160 GeV/$\it c$ or 200 GeV/$\it c$ impinging on polarised $\mathrm{{}^6LiD}$ or $\mathrm{NH_3}$ targets. The experimental asymmetries are compared to next-to-leading order pQCD calculations, and are sensitive to the gluon polarisation $\Delta G$ inside the nucleon in the range of the nucleon momentum fraction carried by gluons $0.05 < x_g < 0.2$. Abstract: Double-spin asymmetries for production of charged pions and kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic muon scattering have been measured by the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The data, obtained by scattering a 160 GeV muon beam off a longitudinally polarised NH_3 target, cover a range of the Bjorken variable x between 0.004 and 0.7. A leading order evaluation of the helicity distributions for the three lightest quarks and antiquark flavours derived from these asymmetries and from our previous deuteron data is presented. The resulting values of the sea quark distributions are small and do not show any sizable dependence on x in the range of the measurements. No significant difference is observed between the strange and antistrange helicity distributions, both compatible with zero. The integrated value of the flavour asymmetry of the helicity distribution of the light-quark sea, \Delta u-bar - \Delta d-bar, is found to be slightly positive, about 1.5 standard deviations away from zero., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The inclusive double-spin asymmetry, A 1 p , has been measured at COMPASS in deep-inelastic polarised muon scattering off a large polarised NH3 target. The data, collected in the year 2007, cover the range Q 2 > 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 , 0.004 x 0.7 and improve the statistical precision of g 1 p ( x ) by a factor of two in the region x 0.02 . The new proton asymmetries are combined with those previously published for the deuteron to extract the non-singlet spin-dependent structure function g 1 NS ( x , Q 2 ) . The isovector quark density, Δ q 3 ( x , Q 2 ) , is evaluated from a NLO QCD fit of g 1 NS . The first moment of Δ q 3 is in good agreement with the value predicted by the Bjorken sum rule and corresponds to a ratio of the axial and vector coupling constants | g A / g V | = 1.28 ± 0.07 ( stat . ) ± 0.10 ( syst. ) .

Abstract: Using 160GeV muon scattering data collected with the COMPASS experiment at CERN, the exclusive production of ωπ0 via virtual photons was studied. Selective population of a peak around 1250MeV is observed. Possible contributions from spin-parity 1- are searched for, inspecting decay angular correlations. In particular, the orientation of the ω decay plane may allow a distinction from the 1+ b 1(1235) state. Our observation is compared with indications of a $ \rho{^\prime}$ (1250) in annihilation and in γp .

Abstract: The COMPASS experiment makes use of the CERN SPS high-intensitymuon and hadron beams for the investigation of the nucleon spin structure and the spectroscopy of hadrons. One or more outgoing particles are detected in coincidence with the incoming muon or hadron. A large polarized target inside a superconducting solenoid is used for the measurements with the muon beam. Outgoing particles are detected by a two-stage, large angle and large momentum range spectrometer. The setup is built using several types of tracking detectors, according to the expected incident rate, required space resolution and the solid angle to be covered. Particle identification is achieved using a RICH counter and both hadron and electromagnetic calorimeters. The setup has been successfully operated from 2002 onwards using a muon beam. Data with a hadron beam were also collected in 2004. Abstract: We present a precise measurement of the deuteron longitudinal spin asymmetry A 1 d and of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g 1 d at Q 2 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 and 4 × 10 −5 x 2.5 × 10 −2 based on the data collected by the COMPASS experiment at CERN during the years 2002 and 2003. The statistical precision is tenfold better than that of the previous measurement in this region. The measured A 1 d and g 1 d are found to be consistent with zero in the whole range of x.

Abstract: Large samples of \Lambda, \Sigma(1385) and \Xi(1321) hyperons produced in deep-inelastic muon scattering off a ^6LiD target were collected with the COMPASS experimental setup at CERN. The relative yields of \Sigma(1385)^+, \Sigma(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^-, \bar{\Sigma}(1385)^+, \Xi(1321)^-, and \bar{\Xi}(1321)^+ hyperons decaying into \Lambda(\bar{\Lambda})\pi were measured. The heavy hyperon to \Lambda and heavy antihyperon to \bar{\Lambda} yield ratios were found to be in the range 3.8% to 5.6% with a relative uncertainty of about 10%. They were used to tune the parameters relevant for strange particle production of the LEPTO Monte Carlo generator., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures and 3 tables, 1 Appendix with 3 figures. Abstract: We present a determination of the gluon polarisation Δg/g in the nucleon, based on the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry of DIS events with Q2>1 (GeV/c)2 including a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. Abstract: The main characteristics of the COMPASS experimental setup for physics with hadron beams are described. This setup was designed to perform exclusive measurements of processes with several charged and/or neutral particles in the final state. Making use of a large part of the apparatus that was previously built for spin structure studies with a muon beam, it also features a new target system as well as new or upgraded detectors. The hadron setup is able to operate at the high incident hadron flux available at CERN. It is characterised by large angular and momentum coverages, large and nearly flat acceptances, and good two and three-particle mass resolutions. In 2008 and 2009 it was successfully used with positive and negative hadron beams and with liquid hydrogen and solid nuclear targets. This article describes the new and upgraded detectors and auxiliary equipment, outlines the reconstruction procedures used, and summarises the general performance of the setup., Comment: 91 pages, 101 figures and 7 tables

Abstract: Prominent K K ¯ resonances observed in the in-flight annihilation of p ¯ p into K + K − π 0 include f 2 ( 1270 ) , f 0 ( 1500 ) , f 2 ′ ( 1525 ) , ϕ ( 1680 ) / ρ ( 1700 ) and a state at 1750 MeV / c 2 consistent with f 0 ( 1710 ) . The reaction cross sections σ ( p ¯ p → X ( K + K − ) π 0 ) are obtained by means of a partial wave analysis. When these are combined with known K K ¯ partial widths, the resulting production rates of presumably non- n n ¯ states, X = f 0 ( 1710 ) and f 2 ′ ( 1525 ) , are found to be suppressed by an order of magnitude compared to f 0 ( 1500 ) and f 2 ( 1270 ) , respectively.

Abstract: We present a determination of the gluon polarization Δ G / G in the nucleon, based on the helicity asymmetry of quasi-real photoproduction events, Q 2 1 ( GeV / c ) 2 , with a pair of large transverse-momentum hadrons in the final state. The data were obtained by the COMPASS experiment at CERN using a 160 GeV polarized muon beam scattered on a polarized 6 LiD target. The helicity asymmetry for the selected events is 〈 A ∥ / D 〉 = 0.002 ± 0.019 ( stat ) ± 0.003 ( syst ) . From this value, we obtain in a leading-order QCD analysis Δ G / G = 0.024 ± 0.089 ( stat ) ± 0.057 ( syst ) at x g = 0.095 and μ 2 ≃ 3 ( GeV / c ) 2 .

Abstract: The gluon polarisation in the nucleon was measured using open charm production by scattering 160 GeV/c polarised muons off longitudinally polarised protons or deuterons. The data were taken by the COMPASS collaboration between 2002 and 2007. A detailed account is given of the analysis method that includes the application of neural networks. Several decay channels of D^0 mesons are investigated. Longitudinal spin asymmetries of the D meson production cross-sections are extracted in bins of D^0 transverse momentum and energy. At leading order QCD accuracy the average gluon polarisation is determined as (Delta g/G)^LO=-0.06 +/- 0.21 (stat.) +/- 0.08 (syst.) at the scale ~13 (GeV/c)^2 and an average gluon momentum fraction ~ 0.11. For the first time, the average gluon polarisation is also obtained at next-to-leading order QCD accuracy as (Delta g/G)^NLO = -0.13 +/- 0.15 (stat.) +/- 0.15 (syst.) at the scale ~ 13 (\GeV/c)^2 and ~ 0.20., Comment: 35 pages, 13 figures and 13 tables

Abstract: Straw drift chambers are used for the Large Area Tracking (LAT) of the Common Muon and Proton Apparatus for Structure and Spectroscopy (COMPASS) at CERN. An active area of 130 m2 in total is covered by 12 440 straw tubes, which are arranged in 15 double layers. The design has been optimized with respect to spatial resolution, rate capability, low material budget and compactness of the detectors. Mechanical and electrical design considerations of the chambers are discussed as well as new production techniques. The mechanical precision of the chambers has been determined using a CCD X-ray scanning apparatus. Results about the performance during data taking in COMPASS are described.

Abstract: The production of D* and D mesons in inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off a ^6LiD target has been investigated with the COMPASS spectrometer at CERN for 0.003 (GeV/c)^2 < Q^2 < 10 (GeV/c)^2 and 3x10^-5< x_Bj < 0.1. The study is based on 8100 events where a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected subsequently to a D*+ or D*- decay, and on 34000 events, where only a D^0 or anti D^0 is detected. Kinematic distributions of D*, D and K*_2 are given as a function of their energy E, transverse momentum p_T, energy fraction z, and of the virtual photon variables nu, Q^2 and x_Bj. Semi-inclusive differential D* production cross-sections are compared with theoretical predictions for D* production via photon-gluon fusion into open charm. The total observed production cross-section for D*+/- mesons with laboratory energies between 22 and 86 GeV is 1.9 nb. Significant cross-section asymmetries are observed between D*+ and D*- production for nu0.6., 22 pages, 12 figures and 2 tables

Abstract: Data are presented on antiproton neutron annihilation at rest into ωπ − π 0 taken with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR (CERN) using a liquid deuterium target. The partial wave analysis shows evidence for at least two ωπ vector resonances above the ρ (770) ground-state. Possible evidence for a third ρ ′ state with a mass around 1180 MeV is discussed. The results are compared to model dependent predictions concerning the nature of the ρ ′ states.

70. Irradiation response of straw drift tubes

Abstract: Drift tubes filled with Ar/CF 4 /CO 2 (74:20:6) were exposed to 26 MeV proton beams from the Munich Tandem accelerator to study the radiation effects and operation characteristics expected for the COMPASS experiment at CERN. Stable operation with no significant loss of gain and no significant Malter current was observed up to charge accumulations of 1.1 C / cm . For comparison, with Ar/CH 4 (90:10) the same detectors show a 23% loss of gain and large Malter currents under the same irradiation condition. For Ar/CF 4 /CO 2 a thin ( μm ) surface layer is observed by means of SEM on the anode wire in the irradiated detector section. As revealed by an ERDA study, the prominent components of this layer are C, O and Si.

Abstract: Annihilation of antiprotons and protons at rest into neutral particles has been studied with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR. Annihilation frequencies are determined for final states containing π 0 , η , η ′ and ω mesons using a liquid and a room temperature, 12 bar, gaseous hydrogen target. Including annihilation frequencies for production of neutral kaons from other experiments, the identified reactions for annihilation in liquid hydrogen add up to a branching fraction of (3.56±0.28)% per annihilation compared to the frequency of (3.50±0.30)% with which we observe the all-neutral decay modes inclusively. Since the exclusive final states are normalized to the Crystal Barrel measurement of the π 0 π 0 branching ratio, the latter result is strongly supported by this present study.

Abstract: Crystal Barrel data are presented for p p→ωπ + π − π 0 at rest, with ω → π + π − π 0 . A small but definite signal confirms a 0 (1450) decaying to ωρ . Its branching ratio to ωρ is a factor 10.7±2.3 larger than to ηπ , where it was first identified. When fitted with a Breit–Wigner amplitude which includes the s -dependence of the ωρ channel, the pole position is M =1440 +40 −15 − i (55±7) MeV. The exotic π 1 (1600) is observed decaying to b 1 π with orbital angular momenta L =0 and 2. There is also a strong J PC =1 ++ signal consistent with a 1 (1640) decaying to ωρ and a much weaker signal for decays to [ b 1 (1235) π ] L =1 . The strongest contribution to the data is a J PC =0 −+ signal in ωρ suggesting a pole at M =1470±15− i (57±7) MeV.

Abstract: Spin-averaged asymmetries in the azimuthal distributions of positive and negative hadrons produced in deep inelastic scattering were measured using the CERN SPS muon beam at $160$ GeV/c and a $^6$LiD target. The amplitudes of the three azimuthal modulations $\cos\phi_h$, $\cos2\phi_h$ and $\sin\phi_h$ were obtained binning the data separately in each of the relevant kinematic variables $x$, $z$ or $p_T^{\,h}$ and binning in a three-dimensional grid of these three variables. The amplitudes of the $\cos \phi_h$ and $\cos 2\phi_h$ modulations show strong kinematic dependencies both for positive and negative hadrons., Comment: 33 pages, 15 figures and 10 pages

Abstract: Exclusive production of the isoscalar vector mesons $\omega$ and $\phi$ is measured with a 190 GeV$/c$ proton beam impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. Cross section ratios are determined in three intervals of the Feynman variable $x_{F}$ of the fast proton. A significant violation of the OZI rule is found, confirming earlier findings. Its kinematic dependence on $x_{F}$ and on the invariant mass $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ of the system formed by fast proton $p_\mathrm{fast}$ and vector meson $V$ is discussed in terms of diffractive production of $p_\mathrm{fast}V$ resonances in competition with central production. The measurement of the spin density matrix element $\rho_{00}$ of the vector mesons in different selected reference frames provides another handle to distinguish the contributions of these two major reaction types. Again, dependences of the alignment on $x_{F}$ and on $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ are found. Most of the observations can be traced back to the existence of several excited baryon states contributing to $\omega$ production which are absent in the case of the $\phi$ meson. Removing the low-mass $M_{p\mathrm{V}}$ resonant region, the OZI rule is found to be violated by a factor of eight, independently of $x_\mathrm{F}$., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures and 5 tables

Abstract: Measurements of two-body branching ratios for p p annihilations at rest in liquid and gaseous (12 ρ STP ) hydrogen are reported. Channels studied are p p →π 0 π 0 ,π 0 η , K 0 S K 0 L , K + K − . The branching ratio for the π 0 π 0 channel in liquid H 2 is measured to be ( 6.14±0.40)×10 −4 . The results are compared with those from other experiments. The fraction of P-state annihilation for a range of target densities from 0.002 ρ STP to liquid H 2 is determined. Values obtained include 0.11±0.02 in liquid H 2 and 0.48±0.04 in 12 ρ STP H 2 gas.

Abstract: The cross section for production of charged hadrons with high transversemomenta in scattering of 160 GeV/c muons off nucleons at low photonvirtualities has been measured at the COMPASS experiment at CERN. The results,which cover transverse momenta from 1.1 to 3.6 GeV/c, are compared to anext-to-leading order perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (NLO pQCD)calculation in order to evaluate the applicability of pQCD to this process inthe kinematic domain of the experiment. The shape of the calculateddifferential cross section as a function of transverse momentum is found to bein good agreement with the experimental data, but the normalization isunderestimated by NLO pQCD. This discrepancy may point towards the relevance ofterms beyond NLO in the pQCD framework. The dependence of the cross section onthe pseudo-rapidity and on the charge of the hadrons is also discussed.

Abstract: Data are presented on the reaction pbar-p -> omega-omega-pizero at rest from the Crystal Barrel detector. These data identify a strong signal due to f2(1565) -> omega-omega. The relative production from initial pbar-p states 3P2, 3P1 and 1S0 is well determined from omega-omega decay angular correlations; P-state annihilation dominates strongly. A combined fit is made with data on pbar-p -> 3pizero at rest, where f2(1565) -> pizero-pizero is observed.

Abstract: A partial wave analysis is presented of two high-statistics data samples of protonium annihilation into π 0 π 0 η in liquid and 12 atm gaseous hydrogen. The contributions from the 1 S 0 , 3 P 1 and 3 P 2 initial atomic fine structure states to the two data sets are different. The change of their fractional contributions when going from liquid to gaseous H 2 as calculated in a cascade model is imposed in fitting the data. Thus the uncertainty in the fraction of S-state and P-state capture is minimized. Both data sets allow a description with a common set of resonances and resonance parameters. The inclusion of a π η P-wave in the fit gives supportive evidence for the ρ (1405) , with parameters compatible with previous findings.

Abstract: We have built and operated a silicon microstrip detector for the Crystal Barrel spectrometer used at LEAR at CERN, to trigger on final states of p p annihilations at rest and in flight containing one or more long-lived neutral particles which decay into charged secondaries. Both strip side and backplane of the single-sided strip detectors are read out, and the information is used in the first and second level trigger stages. The characteristics and performance of this detector are discussed.

Abstract: We present a measurement and partial wave analysis of the final state ${K}_{L}{K}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{\mp}}$ of $\overline{p}p$ annihilation at rest in liquid hydrogen. This reaction is important for the study of the $\overline{K}K$ decay mode of scalar resonances, in particular, the isovectors ${a}_{0}(980)$ and ${a}_{0}(1450).$ The determination of the ${a}_{0}(1450)$ production also fixes the $\overline{K}K$ coupling of the isoscalar ${f}_{0}(1500)$ which is discussed as a glueball. We find $B(\overline{p}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{a}_{0}(1450)\ensuremath{\pi}{;a}_{0}(1450)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{K}K)=(8.88\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.68)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$ and hence $B(\overline{p}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{f}_{0}(1500)\ensuremath{\pi}{;f}_{0}(1500)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{K}K)=(4.52\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.36)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}.$ The mass and width of ${a}_{0}(1450)$ are $m=1480\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}30\mathrm{MeV}{/c}^{2}$ and $\ensuremath{\Gamma}=265\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}15\mathrm{MeV}{/c}^{2},$ respectively. For ${a}_{0}(980)$ we determine the relative ratio $B(\overline{p}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{a}_{0}\ensuremath{\pi}{;a}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\overline{K}K)/B(\overline{p}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{p}{a}_{0}\ensuremath{\pi}{;a}_{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\eta})$ =0.23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.05 and its relative coupling, $\overline{K}K$ to \ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\eta}, is $1.03\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.14.$

Abstract: With antiprotons stopped in liquid deuterium, the p n annihilation channel π−π0η was studied using a final sample of 52 576 events obtained for a spectator proton momentum q q quantum numbers IG=1−, JPC=1−+. The extracted Breit-Wigner resonance parameters are m=(1400±20±20) MeV/c2 and Γ=(310±50+50−30) MeV/c2.

Abstract: Crystal Barrel data are presented on p−p → ηπ0π0π0 at rest in liquid hydrogen and also in gaseous hydrogen at 12 bar. Annihilation from the initial 3P0 state relative to 3P2 is stronger in liquid than in gas by a factor 2.46 ± 0.15, in fair agreement with a prediction by Batty. There is a definite peak due to η(1440). Liquid data determine its mass as M = 1413 MeV, Γ = 49 ± 8 MeV. The mass is, however, lower in gas than in liquid by 12 ± 3 MeV; we attribute this mass shift to interference with broad background amplitudes. The η (1440) decays dominantly to ησ: BR [a0(980)π,a0 → ηπ]/BR[ησ] = 0.4 ± 0.2. However, there is strong destructive interference between these two decay modes. There is also a strong, broad ηππ component with JPC = 0−+, consistent with an earlier analysis proposing a very wide η(1800) resonance; it contributes 31% of the ηπ0π0π0 branching ratio in liquid. At the highest ηππ masses, there are definite 2−+ and l++ signals, but we cannot establish precise resonance masses or widths. There is also evidence for the production of f2 (1565), decaying to a2 (1320)π.

Abstract: The π 0 momentum dependence of the decay η → π + π − π 0 has been measured with the Crystal Barrel detector. The analysis is based on 3230 events. The results of this independent measurement are compared to new chiral perturbation theory calculations and previous measurements.

Abstract: The decay p p ( at rest ) → K L o K ± π ∓ π o , studied on a sample of more than 14000 events, is found to proceed dominantly via two-body channels containing resonances with open strangeness. Contributions from K 1 (1270) K and K 1 (1400) K , branching into the successive K1-decay modes, and from K ∗ K ∗ , K ∗ ( K π) s and (Kπ) s ( K π) s are extracted by means of a partial-wave analysis which accounts well for the data and also allows a search for weak contributions from other (Kππ) and from ( K K π ) resonances. Striking asymmetries between the charged and the neutral kaonic resonances give evidence for interfering isospin 0 and 1 annihilation amplitudes.

Abstract: The annihilation channel p p →K + K − π 0 in liquid hydrogen at rest has been studied with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR. The measured branching ratio is: BR ( p p → K + K − π 0 )=(2.37±0.15)×10 −3 . A partial wave analysis shows that this reaction is dominated by the π (K K ) S , K K ∗ (892) and π φ (1020) intermediate states. Weak signals are observed for π a 2 (1320), π f 2 (1270), π f 2 ′(1525) and K(Kπ) S . A satisfactory description of the Dalitz plot requires the introduction of π (K K ) P intermediate states with at least one pole.

Abstract: We have measured the branching ratio for the radiative decay ω → ηγ with ω mesons produced in antiproton-proton annihilation at rest into π0ω and ηω. Taking into account ϱ - ω mixing we find a branching ratio B(ω → ηγ) = (6.6 ± 1.7) × 10−4, in accord with the constructive interference solution in other experiments. The upper-limit for the direct radiative decay ω → 3γ is 1.9 × 10−4 at 95% confidence level.

Abstract: The π + π − invariant mass distribution produced in p p annihilation at rest and recoiling against η mesons exhibits large interference between the amplitudes for ϱη and ωη production. The interference can be quantitatively described within the framework of ϱ-ω interference. We find full coherence between the ϱω-ωη production amplitudes and a vanishing relative production phase. The implications of this result for p p annihilation dynamics are discussed.

Abstract: A partial wave analysis of pp → π0π0η′ has been performed using the η′ → π0π0η and η′ → γγ decay modes. The data are dominated by an η′ recoiling against the (ππ) S-wave. In addition, α2 (1320) → η′π0 is needed. There is evidence for contributions from α0(1450) → η′π0. The branching ratio of α0(1450) → η′π0 with respect to ηπ0 is consistent with the prediction of SU(3).

Abstract: The distribution of m ( π + π − ) in the decay η ′ → π + π − γ has been measured with the Crystal Barrel detector. The results are based on a total of 7392 observed η′ decays. The box anomaly constant is extracted from this and its value is found to agree well with theoretical expectations. The pseudoscalar nonet parameters ( f 1 , f 8 and θ PS ) are determined. Finally, we find that there is a problem of consistency between QCD and the standard VDM assumption.

Abstract: A study of p -annihilation in liquid deuterium into π − π 0 π 0 and a spectator-proton is presented. A cut on the proton-momentum of ≤ 100 MeV/ c ensures that annihilation takes place on a quasi-free neutron. A partial wave analysis shows contributions from three vector mesons, with masses and widths of (763.7 ± 3.2; 152.8 ± 4.3), (1411 ± 14; 343 ± 20); (1780 −29 +37 ; 275 ± 45) MeV/ c 2 , respectively.

Abstract: Crystal Barrel data on p p → 5π 0 at rest are presented. Mass spectra for 2π0 combinations, 3π0 and 4π0 and decay angular distributions all differ significantly from phase space. We present several ways of fitting the data. All agree on the definite presence of the f0(1500), observed in its 4π0 decay mode. It can decay into ππ(1300) and into σσ where σ stands for the full ππ S-wave amplitude.

Abstract: Data on$\bar pp \to \eta \pi ^0 \pi ^0 \pi ^0 $ taken at beam momenta of 1.2 and 1.94 GeV/c reveal evidence for twoI=0JPC=2−+ resonances inηππ. The first, at 1645±14(stat.)±15(syst.) MeV with width 180−21+40±25 MeV, decays toα2(1320)π withL=0. It may be interpreted as the$q\bar q^1 $D2 partner ofπ2(1670). A strong signal is also observed just above threshold inf2(1270)η withL=0. It is 11–22 times stronger than is expected for the high mass tail of the 1645 MeV resonance. It can be fitted as a second 2−+ resonance at 1875±20±35 MeV with width 200±25±45 MeV. A third resonance havingJPC=2++ is observed at 2135±20±45 MeV withΛ=250±25±45 MeV, decaying to botha2(1320)π andf2(1270)η withL=1. There is no evidence for resonances with decays toa0(980)π, ση orf0(980)η.

Abstract: We have observed the ηπ + π − and ηπ 0 π 0 decay modes of the E meson in p p annihilation at rest into π + π − π 0 π 0 η . The mass and width of the E meson are 1409 ± 3 and 86 ± 10 MeV. The production and decay branching ratio is B( p p → Eππ)B(E → ηππ) = (3.3 ± 1.0) × 10 −3 . With a spin-parity analysis we determine that J P = 0 − . The observation of the ηπ 0 π 0 decay mode establishes that E is isoscalar ( C = +1). We find that E decays to η ( ππ ) s (where ( ππ ) s is an S-wave dipion) and πa 0 (980)(→ πη ) with a relative branching ratio of (78 ± 16) %. Using the K K π production and decay branching ratio measured earlier we determine that B[E → K K π] B[E → ηππ] = 0.61 ± 0.19 . A comparison with observations in radiative J Ψ decays suggests that E and ι η (1416) are identical.

Abstract: We confirm the existence of the two IG(JPC) = 0+(0++) resonances f0(1370) and f0(1500) reported by us in earlier analyses. The analysis presented here couples the final states π0π0π0, π0π0η and π0ηη of pp annihilation at rest. It is based on a 3 × 3 K-matrix. We find masses and widths of M = (1390±30) MeV, Γ = (380±80) MeV; and M = (1500±10) MeV, Γ = (154 ± 30) MeV, respectively. The product branching ratios for the production and decay into π0π0 and ηη of the f0(1500) are (1.27 ± 0.33) · 10−3 and (0.60 ± 0.17) · 10−3, respectively.

Abstract: A partial wave analysis of the reaction p p →π o ηη has been performed, using a high quality, high statistics data set of 198,000 events. In addition to the ƒ 0 (1370), a second scalar resonance decaying into ηη, the ƒ 0 (1500), with mass m = (1505 ± 15) MeV and width Γ = (120 ± 30) MeV has to be introduced to describe the data.
