Abstract

The charged-particle multiplicity distribution in decays is determined from data collected at the e+e- storage ring PEP. The one-, three-, and five-charged-particle inclusive branching fractions are (86 ± 2)%, (14 ± 2)%, and < 0.5%, respectively. © 1982 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The decay psi (3684) ..-->..psi (3095) eta has been observed to have a branching fraction of (4.3+-0.8) %. This measurement, together with previous measurements of psi (3684) ..-->..psi (3095)+ anything, psi (3684) ..-->..psi (3095) ..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/, and psi (3684) ..-->..psi (3095) ..gamma gamma.., indicates that isospin is conserved in the decay psi (3684) ..-->..psi (3095) ..pi pi.. and establishes the isospin and G parity of the psi (3684) to be I/subG/=0/sup -/. Abstract

Two-photon interactions have been studied with the SLAC-LBL Mark II magnetic detector at SPEAR. The cross section for {eta}' production by the reaction e{sup +}e{sup -} {yields} e{sup +}e{sup -}{eta}' has been measured at beam energies from 2.0 GeV to 3.7 GeV. The radiative width {Lambda}{sub {gamma}{gamma}}({eta}') has been determined to be 5.8 {+-} 1.1 keV ({+-}20% systematic uncertainty). Upper limits on the radiative widths of the f(1270), A{sub 2}(1310) and f'(1515) tensor mesons have been determined. A search has been made for production of the E(1420) by {gamma}{gamma} collisions, but no signal is observed.

Abstract

A peak in the pK-+ and p»K+- invariant-mass spectra at 2.2850.006 GeV/c2 is observed, which is associated with the lowest-lying charmed baryon (c). A cross section times branching ratio of 0.0370.012 nb at Ec.m.=5.2 GeV is measured with a substantial fraction of the events produced with an equal recoiling mass. New measurements of inclusive p and cross sections are also presented, allowing an estimate of the branching ratio B(c+pK-+)=0.0220.010. © 1980 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The decay mode ψ′→γγψ has been studied with the Mark-II detector at SPEAR. New measurements of branching ratios for decays of the type ψ′→γχ, χ→γψ involving known χ states are presented. The existence of a χ state of mass near 3455 MeV/c2 produced in this decay chain is not confirmed, and the upper limit (90% confidence level) of the product of branching ratios is measured to be 0.13%. A new decay mode, ψ′→π0ψ, which violates isospin conservation is observed with branching ratio (0.15±0.06)%. © 1980 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present experimental evidence for the existence of the decay psi (3684) $Yields$$gamma$,chi, chi$Yields$4$pi$/sup plus-or-minus/, 6$pi$/sup plus- or-minus/, $pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$K$sup +$K$sup -$, $pi$$sup +$$pi$$sup -$, and K$sup +$K$sup -$. There is clear evidence for at least two chi states, one at 3.41plus-or-minus0.001 GeV/c$sup 2$ and the other at 3.53plus-or-minus0.02 GeV/ c$sup 2$. The chi (3410) decays into $pi$$pi$ and KK and thus must have even spin and parity.

Abstract

The production of enutral kaons in e + e − annihilation has been measured for c.m. energies between 3.4 GeV and 7.6 GeV. Near 4 GeV the inclusive K S cross section shows an increase and structure similar to total hadron production. Roughly 40–45% of all hadronic final states contain kaons, except at 4.028 GeV and 4.415 GeV, where a significantly larger kaon fraction is observed.

Abstract

Energy correlations have been measured with the MARK II detector at the PEP storage ring (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center) at c.m. energy of 29 GeV and are compared to first-order QCD predictions. Fragmentation processes are significant and limit the precision with which the first-order strong-coupling constant can be determined. © 1982 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the cross section for the process γγ → π + π − at invariant masses 500 MeV/ c 2 m ππ c 2 . A value for the radiative width of the f(1270) tensor meson Γ f→ γγ = 3.6 ± 0.3 ± 0.5 KeV (helicity λ = 2) has been obtained from a fit to the observed ππ mass spectrum.

Abstract

We have searched 1.4 × 10 6 e + e − annihilation events for particles with 1–3 GeV/ c 2 mass and charge Q = − 2 3 from the processes e + e − →q q X and e + e − → q q . Upper limits of RQ ∼ 10 −4 for each process are presented which improve the previous limits on free quark production in electromagnetic interactions by 2 orders of magnitude.

Abstract

In a study of {psi}'(3684) radiative decays with the Mark II detector at SPEAR, we observe the decay sequence {psi}' {yields} {gamma}{eta}{sub c}(2980), with the {eta}{sub c}(2980) decaying into several completely reconstructed hadronic modes. We obtain a mass M = 2980 ± 8 MeV / c{sup 2} and a width {Gamma} < 40 MeV / c{sup 2} (90% confidence level), and present estimates of some of the decay branching ratios.

Abstract

We have studied momentum spectra for D0 ( D 0) and D± mesons produced near 4 GeV in e+e− annihilation and find that production is dominated by two-body reactions involving D and D∗ states where the D∗ (charged and neutral) have masses near 2.01 GeV/c2. A detailed study of D momentum spectra near Ecm = 4.028 GeV allows determination of masses and branching ratios of D and D∗ states. Lastly we find that events containing a D0 meson conserve strangeness, thus establishing upper limits on D0- D 0 mixing and on the effects of charm changing neutral currents.

Abstract

Direct electrons are observed in baryon events produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at center-of-mass energies above the ..lambda../sub c/Lambda-bar/sub c/ threshold. These events are attributed to charmed baryon pair production and subsequent ..lambda../sub c/ semileptonic decay. Various semileptonic branching ratios of the ..lambda../sub c/ are determined, including BR(..lambda../sub c/..-->..e/sup +/X) = (4.5 +- 1.7)%.

Abstract

Events of the type e/sup +/e/sup -/ ..-->.. e/sup +/e/sup -/eta' (958) have been observed with the Mark II detector at SPEAR by detecting the decay mode eta' ..-->.. rho/sup 0/..gamma... From the observed cross section and known branching fractions of the eta' is GAMMA/sub gammagamma/ = 5.9 +- 1.6 +- 1.2 keV and the total width is GAMMA = 300 +- 90 +- 60 keV (statistical and systematic errors).

Abstract

We present a study of the decay properties of charmed D mesons produced near the peak of the {psi}" (3770) resonance in e{sup +}e{sup -} annihilation. Branching fractions for nine Cabibbo-favored and three Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes are presented along with upper limits on one additional Cabibbo-favored and four additional Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes. A study of K{pi}{pi} decay mode Dalitz plots reveals a large quasi-two-body pseudoscalar-vector component for the D{sup 0} decays and an apparent nonuniform population an the Dalitz plot for the D{sup +} decay into K{sup -}{pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup +}. Using tagged events, we measure the charged particle multiplicity and strange particle content of D decays. A measurement of the D{sup +} and D{sup 0} semileptonic decay fractions indicates that the D{sup +} has a significantly longer lifetime than the D{sup 0}.

Abstract

The anomalous eμ and 2-prong μx events produced in e + e − annihilation are used to determine the properties of the proposed τ charged lepton. We find the τ mass is 1.90 ± 0.10 GeV/ c 2 ; the mass of the associated neutrino, ν τ , is less than 0.6 GeV/ c 2 with 95% confidence; V - A coupling is favored over V + A coupling for the τ − ν τ current; and the leptonic branching ratios are 0.186 ± 0.010 ± 0.028 from the eμ events and 0.175 ± 0.027 ± 0.030 from the μx events where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic.

Abstract

A search has been made for the inclusive production of J ψ (3.1) and Υ{hooked} (9.4) mesons in e+e- interactions at 29 GeV, via their decay into two leptons. No signal is observed in the J ψ region, nor in the Υ{hooked} region. The limits on the cross sections are σ(e+e- → ψX) < 4.4 × 10-36cm2, and σ(e+e- → Υ{hooked}X) < 4.7 × 10-36 cm2. The same data yield limits on the branching ratios for the b quark BR (b → ψX) < 4.9% and BR (b → l+l-X) < 0.8%. © 1983.

Abstract

Cross sections for e$sup +$e$sup -$$Yields$hadrons, e$sup +$e$sup -$, and $mu$$sup +$$mu$$sup -$ near 3684 MeV are presented. The psi(3684) resonance is established as having the assignment J/sup PC/=1$sup --$. The mass is 3684+-5 MeV. The partial width for decay to electrons is GAMMA/sube/=2.1+-0.3 keV and the total width is GAMMA=228+-56 keV. (AIP)

Abstract

Measurements of inclusive transverse-momentum spectra for {ital K}{sub {ital S}}{sup 0} mesons produced in proton-antiproton collisions at {radical}{ital s} of 630 and 1800 GeV are presented and compared with data taken at lower energies. The ratio, as a function of {ital p}{sub {ital T}}, of the cross section for {ital K}{sub {ital S}}{sup 0} to that for charged hadrons is very similar to what is observed at lower energies. At 1800 GeV, we calculate the strangeness-suppression factor {lambda}=0.40{plus minus}0.05.

Measurements of ψ(3097) and ψ′(3686) branching fractions for selected hadronic decays are presented. The ratio of ψ′ to ψ branching fractions for these decays is consistent with the ratio of branching fractions to lepton pairs, with the exception of the decays to pπ and K*K for which this ratio is substantially smaller. © 1983 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a high statistics measurement of the branching ratio for the decay τ-→π-μτ using data obtained with the Mark II detector at the SLAC e+e- storage ring SPEAR. We have used events from the center-of-mass energy region 3.52 to 6.7 GeV to determine that B(τ-→π-μτ)=0.117±0.004±0.018. From electron-muon events in the same data sample, we have determined that B(τ-→π-μτ) B(τ-→e--μeμτ)=0.66±0.03±0.11. We present measurements of the mass and spin of the τ and the mass of the τ neutrino based, for the first time, on a hadronic decay mode of the τ. © 1982.

Abstract

We present evidence for the existence of an intermediate state observed in the decay sequence $\ensuremath{\psi}(3684)\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\psi}(3095)\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$. The mass of the state is either 3500 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 10 or 3270 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 10 MeV. The branching fraction of the sequence is (3.6 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.7)%.

A fine energy scan has been performed to search for narrow states in e+e- annihilation at c.m. energies between 29.90 and 31.46 GeV. No such state has been observed. The 90% confidence upper limit on the leptonic decay width times the hadronic decay branching ratio is ΓeeBh

We present the properties of 105 events of the form e + + e − → e +- + μ ∓ + missing energy, in which no other charged particles or photons are detected. The simplesthypothesis compatible with all the data is that these events come from the production of a pair of heavy leptons, the mass of the lepton being in the range 1.6 to 2.0 GeV/ c 2

Abstract

We present a measurement of the cross section for hadron production by e+e- annihilation in the vicinity of the previously observed resonance near 3.77 GeV. The data are used to determine the parameters of the (3770) resonance. The values found are: mass, 3764±5 MeV/c2, total width, 23.5±5 MeV, and partial width to electron pairs, 276±50 eV. © 1980 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Measurements of multihadron production in e+e− annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 2.6 and 7.8 GeV are presented. Aside from the narrow resonances ψ(3095) and ψ(3684), the total hadronic cross section is found to be approximately 2.7 times the cross section for the production of muon pairs at c.m. energies below 3.7 GeV and 4.3 times the muon-pair cross section at c.m. energies above 5.5 GeV. Complicated structure is found at intermediate energies. Charged-particle multiplicities and inclusive momentum distributions are presented.

Abstract

Evidence is presented, from a study of multihadronic final states produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 3.90 and 4.60 GeV, for the production of a new neutral state with mass 1865 +- 15 MeV/c/sup 2/ and decay width less than 40 MeV/c/sup 2/ that decays to K/sup plus-or-minus/..pi../sup plus-or-minus/ and K/sup plus-or-minus/..pi../sup plus-or-minus/..pi../sup plus-or-minus/..pi../sup plus-or-minus/. The recoil-mass spectrum for this state suggests that it is produced only in association with systems of comparable or larger mass. (AIP)

Abstract

A beam of 1.0-BeV/c ${{K}_{2}}^{0}$ mesons passing through liquid hydrogen in a bubble chamber was seen to generate ${{K}_{1}}^{0}$ mesons with the momentum and direction of the original beam. The intensity of ${{K}_{1}}^{0}$ production was far greater than that anticipated from conventional mechanisms, and the suggestion is made that the ${{K}_{1}}^{0}$ mesons are produced by coherent regeneration resulting from a new weak long-range interaction between protons and $K$ mesons.

Abstract

The reaction ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}+d\ensuremath{\rightarrow}2n$ has been observed by detecting the two neutrons in coincidence with slow negative mesons incident on a liquid deuterium target. The observed angular correlation of the two neutrons confirms the identification of the process. The process is therefore not forbidden, and this fact may be used to establish the odd relative parity of the pion and the nucleon.

Abstract

The depolarization of high-energy positrons degraded to rest in matter has been measured using the lifetime distribution of positronium in a magnetic field as a polarization analyser. Positron beams with initial energies between O.4 MeV and 24 MeV were investigated. The use of a linear accelerator to produce a high-energy polarized positron beam is described. The results show that 12 MeV positrons are (79± 12)% depolarized in being degraded to rest. Tor this reason, the polarization analyser using positronium in a magnetic field does not appear to be useful for high-energy applications.

Abstract

The operation of the Columbia 36 in. magnet cloud chamber at the Cosmotron is described. The production of unstable particles by 1.9 GeV π- pions in lead and carbon is studied. The yields are interpreted in terms of nuclear interactions of Λ° and θ° particles in the nucleus of production. A large cross section for the reaction Σ → Λ° is deduced from this and other data. The disappearance of θ°’s is observed in lead relative to carbon, and possible mechanisms are discussed. The Λ° lifetime is redetermined to be 2.75 -0.40 +0.45 .10-10 that of the θ° is found to be 1.15 -0.25 +0.40 .10-10 Associated production is discussed and an upper limit for the fraction of Λ°’s associated with unknown particles is found to be 0.40. Correlation angles in Λ° decay are observed to favor « front-to-back » asymmetry. Some anomalous events are described. Si osserva che nel piombo si hanno meno ω° che nel carbonio e si discutono i possibili meccanismi del fenomeno. Si ridetermina la vita media del Λ° trovando (2.75 -0.40 0.45 ) lO-10 s ; la vita media del ω° risulta (1.15 -0.25 0.40 ).10-10 Si discute la produzione associata e si trova per la frazione di Λ° associati con particelle ignote il valore 0.40. Si osserva ehe gli angoli di correlazione nel decadimento del Λ° favoriscono l’asimmetria « dall’avanti all’indietra. Si descrivono alcuni eventi anomali.

Abstract

A search for N ∗ (1450) production has been made among the 904 selected examples of the reaction pd → pp π − (p sp ) obtained in a bubble chamber exposure at 5.9 GeV/ c incident momentum. The cross section for the reaction pn → pp π − is found to be 1.4 ± 0.1 mb. The peripheral data are in good agreement with the predictions of a single-pion exchange model. Approximately 8% of the events can be attributed to N ∗ (1450) production by some other mechanism.

We have observed the decay D*+→D0π+ and have measured its Q value to be 5.7±0.5 MeV. The decay width of the D*+ is less than 2.0 MeV/c2. The observation of D*+→(K−π+)π+ but not of D*+→(K+π−)π+ sets an upper limit on the amount of D0−D¯0 mixing.

Abstract

We report evidence for the production of a new narrow charged state in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at a center-of-mass energy of 4.03 GeV. This state, which has a mass of 1876 +- 15 MeV/c/sup 2/, is observed in the exotic channel Kminus-or-plus..pi../sup plus-or-minus/..pi.. +- , but not in the nonexotic channel Kminus-or-plus..pi../sup +/..pi../sup -/. It is produced primarily in association with a system of mass 2.01 +- 0.02 GeV/c/sup 2/. These characteristics are just those expected of a charged charmed meson. (AIP)

Abstract

We observe $\ensuremath{\psi}(3684)$ to decay into $\ensuremath{\psi}(3095)$ with a branching ratio of 0.57 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.08. The branching ratio for the particular decay mode $\ensuremath{\psi}(3095)+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ is measured to be 0.32 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.04. Remaining decays leading to $\ensuremath{\psi}(3095)$ are largely, but not entirely, accounted for by the mode $\ensuremath{\psi}(3095)+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}+{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ if the two pions in this decay are in a state of zero isospin.

The D/sup 0/ Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes ..pi../sup -/..pi../sup +/ and K/sup -/K/sup +/ have been observed and the following ratios of D/sup 0/ partial decay widths have been measured: GAMMA (D/sup 0/ ..-->.. ..pi../sup -/..pi../sup +/)/GAMMA (D/sup 0/ ..-->.. K/sup -/..pi../sup +/) = 0.033 +- 0.015 and GAMMA (D/sup 0/ ..-->.. K/sup -/K/sup +/)/GAMMA (D/sup 0/ ..-->.. K/sup -/..pi../sup +/) = 0.113 +- 0.030.

Abstract

The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) is a 5000 t magnetic detector built to study 2 TeV p p collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron. Event analysis is based on charged particle tracking, magnetic momentum analysis and fine-grained calorimetry. The combined electromagnetic and hadron calorimetry has approximately uniform granularity in rapidity-azimuthal angle and extends down to 2° from the beam direction. Various tracking chambers cover the calorimeter acceptance and extend charged particle tracking down to 2 mrad from the beam direction. Charged particle momenta are analyzed in a 1.5 T solenoidal magnetic field, generated by a superconducting coil which is 3 m in diameter and 5 m in length. The central tracking chamber measures particle momenta with a resolution better then δpT/pT2 = 2 × 10−3 (GeV/c)−1 in the region 40°

Abstract

Hadron jets produced in e+e− annihilation between 13 GeV and 31.6 GeV in c.m. at PETRA are analyzed. The transverse momentum of the jets is found to increase strongly with c.m. energy. The broadening of the jets is not uniform in azimuthal angle around the quark direction but tends to yield planar events with large and growing transverse momenta in the plane and smaller transverse momenta normal to the plane. The simple q q collinear jet picture is ruled out. The observation of planar events shows that there are three basic particles in the final state. Indeed, several events with three well-separated jets of hadrons are observed at the highest energies. This occurs naturally when the outgoing quark radiates a hard noncollinear gluon, i.e., e + e − → q q g with the quarks and the gluons fragmenting into hadrons with limited transverse momenta.
