Abstract: Artificial hair sensors consisting of a piezoresistive carbon-nanotube-coated glass fiber embedded in a microcapillary are assembled and characterized. Individual sensors resemble a hair plug that may be integrated in a wide range of host materials. The sensors demonstrate an air-flow detection threshold of less than 1 m/s with a piezoresistive sensitivity of 1.3% per m/s air-flow change.

Abstract: Die retrospektive Analyse im Zeitraum von 2007 bis 2011 erfasste 71 chirurgisch therapierte Patienten mit einem Karzinom der Kopf-Hals-Region und anschliesender Rekonstruktion mit 36 gestielten Fernlappen und 47 mikrochirurgischen Transplantaten. Die patientenspezifischen Parameter der Datenerhebung mit SPSS 17.0 waren Alters- und Geschlechtsverteilung, TNM-Stadium und Therapiestrategie. Hinsichtlich der Rekonstruktion wurden die Art des Lappens, die Operationsdauer, Komplikationen sowie die intensivmedizinische und stationare Verweildauer erfasst. Insgesamt heilten 26 (72,2 %) gestielte Lappen ein. Es wurden 14 (38,9 %) gestielte Fernlappen in praoperativ radiotherapeutisch behandelte Gebiete der Kopf-Hals-Region verpflanzt, von denen 86,0 % gut anwuchsen. Tumorstadium, Allgemeinzustand des Patienten und Art der Therapie sind die entscheidenden Parameter fur die Wahl der Rekonstruktion.

Abstract: Pre-event promotion is an important tool for fund-raising campaigns, and sporting events. Local volunteers are often recruited to spread the word and solicit participation in community and cause related events. Frequent promotions with increasingly longer lead-times are techniques regularly employed to create event awareness and solicit participation. This study investigated the effects of temporal distance (distance between the promotion and the event) and its relation to a follow-through call to action of community volunteers. The use of a time horizon analysis in conjunction with Temporal Construal Theory provides insights to human decision-making behavior within a temporal distance context. The exploratory study investigated effects of temporal distance influencers and affective volunteer response to event activities. The report is focused on event marketing and effectiveness using case study methodology applied to the rapidly developing field of event promotion theory and management. The findings, though not conclusive represent interpretive analysis based on principles of disciplined imagination to extend Temporal Construal.

Abstract: This paper examines the relationship between a firm’s brand equity and its investment value. “Brand equity is defined as the incremental cash flows which accrue to branded products over unbranded products. The estimation technique extracts the value of brand equity from the value of the firm's other assets” (Simon & Sullivan, 1993). This study illustrates how stocks with higher growth of brand equity provide stronger investment value. Conversely, stocks with deteriorating brand equity generally feature lower return potential. An empirical portfolio-strategy is used to demonstrate the assumptions and predicts how to capitalize upon return potential from such a relationship.

Abstract: We have observed 79 supernova remnants (SNRs) with the Urumqi 25m telescope at 6cm during the Sino-German 6cm polarization survey of the Galactic plane. We measured flux densities of SNRs at 6cm, some of which are the first ever measured or the measurements at the highest frequency, so that we can determine or improve spectra of SNRs. Our observations have ruled out spectral breaks or spectral flattening that were suggested for a few SNRs, and confirmed the spectral break of S147. By combining our 6cm maps with 11cm and 21cm maps from the Effelsberg 100 m telescope, we calculated the spectral index maps of several large SNRs. For many remnants we obtained for the first time polarization images, which show the intrinsic magnetic field structures at 6cm. We disapproved three objects as being SNRs, OA184, G192.8-1.1 and G16.8-1.1, which show a thermal spectrum and no polarization. We have discovered two large supernova remnants, G178.2-4.2 and G25.1-2.3., in the survey maps., Comment: Invited talk at IAUS 296. 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Pulsars emit low-frequency radio waves through to high-energy gamma-rays that are generated anywhere from the surface out to the edges of the magnetosphere. Detecting correlated mode changes in the multi-wavelength emission is therefore key to understanding the physical relationship between these emission sites. Through simultaneous observations, we have detected synchronous switching in the radio and X-ray emission properties of PSR B0943+10. When the pulsar is in a sustained radio 'bright' mode, the X-rays show only an un-pulsed, non-thermal component. Conversely, when the pulsar is in a radio 'quiet' mode, the X-ray luminosity more than doubles and a 100%-pulsed thermal component is observed along with the non-thermal component. This indicates rapid, global changes to the conditions in the magnetosphere, which challenge all proposed pulsar emission theories., Paper published in Science including supplementary material

Abstract: The low-frequency radio spectra of the hotspots within powerful radio galaxies can provide valuable information about the physical processes operating at the site of the jet termination. These processes are responsible for the dissipation of jet kinetic energy, particle acceleration, and magnetic-field generation. Here we report new observations of the powerful radio galaxy Cygnus A using the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) between 109 and 183 MHz, at an angular resolution of ~3.5 arcsec. The radio emission of the lobes is found to have a complex spectral index distribution, with a spectral steepening found towards the centre of the source. For the first time, a turnover in the radio spectrum of the two main hotspots of Cygnus A has been directly observed. By combining our LOFAR imaging with data from the Very Large Array at higher frequencies, we show that the very rapid turnover in the hotspot spectra cannot be explained by a low-energy cut-off in the electron energy distribution, as has been previously suggested. Thermal (free-free) absorption or synchrotron self absorption models are able to describe the low-frequency spectral shape of the hotspots, however, as with previous studies, we find that the implied model parameters are unlikely, and interpreting the spectra of the hotspots remains problematic., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract: The efficient mapping between 2D and 3D spaces offered by origami facilitates the exploration of a vast design space of 3D reconfigurable devices. Many existing origami adaptations for engineering applications assume known folded geometries. However, “what to make” becomes a critical question for design problems where the intuition on the relationship between the geometry and function is limited. This article discusses a systematic design method for folding patterns used to tune electromagnetic performance. Radio frequency transmission characteristics of a frequency selective surface are investigated as an example. The fold stiffness distribution and the embedded actuator locations on a substrate are optimized using the sensitivity information obtained through the electromagnetic analysis in COMSOL. The optimal crease pattern and actuator distribution are used to fold a substrate hosting dipoles of known dimensions. Attaining a smooth optimization process proved to be challenging due to the high sensitivity of the FSS on the dipole orientations. A surrogate optimization problem is solved to achieve a resonant frequency tuning toward a target frequency.

Abstract: Origami, the ancient art of paper folding, has recently garnered attention from the scientific community for its capacity for unique 2D – 3D shape change and programmable mechanical properties. Application areas of such properties include packaging, self-assembly, shock absorption and deployable structures. Recent studies have highlighted the role of the folded geometry to regulate the mechanical response of the origami structures, such as the increased compression stiffness of origami tubes or the tunable in-plane stiffness through select inversion of bi-stable fold vertices. In addition to geometric re-enforcement, the mechanical response of an origami structure can also be programmed through spatial patterning of the individual fold line stiffnesses. However, the coupling between the geometric and material stiffening design spaces for origami structures is poorly understood and design rules are needed to guide the use of material stiffening to enhance or mitigate a geometric stiffening effect. In this computational study, a modal analysis of a corrugated fold with varying degrees of pre-fold and different sets of fold stiffness distributions is evaluated to highlight the interaction between geometric and material stiffness mechanisms.

Abstract: Origami devices have the ability to spatially reconfigure between 2D and 3D states through folding motions. The precise mapping of origami presents a novel method to spatially tune radio frequency (RF) devices, including adaptive antennas, sensors, reflectors, and frequency selective surfaces (FSSs). While conventional RF FSSs are designed based upon a planar distribution of conductive elements, this leaves the large design space of the out of plane dimension underutilized. We investigated this design regime through the computational study of four FSS origami tessellations with conductive dipoles. The dipole patterns showed increased resonance shift with decreased separation distances, with the separation in the direction orthogonal to the dipole orientations having a more significant effect. The coupling mechanisms between dipole neighbours were evaluated by comparing surface charge densities, which revealed the gain and loss of coupling as the dipoles moved in and out of alignment via folding. Collectively, these results provide a basis of origami FSS designs for experimental study and motivates the development of computational tools to systematically predict optimal fold patterns for targeted frequency response and directionality.

Abstract: Reconfigurable structures based on origami design are useful for multifunctional applications, such as deployable shelters, solar array packaging, and tunable antennas. Origami provides a framework to decompose a complex 2D to 3D transformation into a series of folding operations about predetermined foldlines. Recent optimization toolsets have begun to enable a systematic search of the design space to optimize not only geometry but also mechanical performance criteria as well. However, selecting optimal fold patterns for large folding operations is challenging as geometric nonlinearity influences fold choice throughout the evolution. The present work investigates strategies for design optimization to incorporate the current and future configurations of the structure in the performance evaluation. An optimization method, combined with finite-element analysis, is used to distribute mechanical properties within an initially flat structure to determine optimal crease patterns to achieve desired motions. Out-of-plane and twist displacement objectives are used in three examples. The influence of load increment and geometric nonlinearity on the choice of crease patterns is studied, and appropriate optimization strategies are discussed.

Abstract: Artificial hair sensors have been developed in the Air Force Research Laboratory for use in prediction of local flow around airfoils and subsequent use in gust rejection applications. The on-going sensor development is based on a micro-sized unmanned vehicle, resulting in a sensor design that is sensitive in that aircraft’s nominal flight condition (speed). However, the active, or operating, region of the artificial hair sensor concept is highly dependent on the geometry and properties of the hair, capillary, and carbon nanotubes that make up the sensor design. This paper aims at expanding the flow measurement concept using artificial hair sensors to UAVs with different dimensions by properly sizing the parameters of the sensors, according to the nominal flight conditions of the UAVs. In this work, the hair, made of glass fiber, will be modeled as a cantilever beam with an elastic foundation, subject to external distributed aerodynamic drag. Hair length, diameter, capillary depth, and carbon nanotube length will be scaled by keeping the maximum strain of the carbon nanotubes constant for different sensors under different working conditions. Numerical studies will demonstrate the feasibility of the scaling methodology by designing artificial hair sensors for UAVs with different dimensions and flight conditions, starting from a baseline sensor design.

Abstract: An active area of research in adaptive structures focuses on the use of continuous wing shape changing methods as a means of replacing conventional discrete control surfaces and increasing aerodynamic efficiency. Although many shape-changing methods have been used since the beginning of heavier-than-air flight, the concept of performing camber actuation on a fully-deformable airfoil has not been widely applied. A fundamental problem of applying this concept to real-world scenarios is the fact that camber actuation is a continuous, time-dependent process. Therefore, if camber actuation is to be used in a closed-loop feedback system, one must be able to determine the instantaneous airfoil shape as well as the aerodynamic loads at all times. One approach is to utilize a new type of artificial hair sensors developed at the Air Force Research Laboratory to determine the flow conditions surrounding deformable airfoils. In this work, the hair sensor measurement data will be simulated by using the flow solver XFoil, with the assumption that perfect data with no noise can be collected from the hair sensor measurements. Such measurements will then be used in an artificial neural network based process to approximate the instantaneous airfoil camber shape, lift coefficient, and moment coefficient at a given angle of attack. Various aerodynamic and geometrical properties approximated from the artificial hair sensor and artificial neural network system will be compared with the results of XFoil in order to validate the approximation approach.

Abstract: Reconfigurable structures such as morphing aircraft generally require an on-board energy source to function. At high speeds, however, frictional heating generated at the nose of a morphing aircraft can provide a large amount of thermal energy during a short period of time. This thermal energy can be collected, transferred, and utilized to reconfigure the aircraft. Direct utilization of thermal energy has the ability to significantly decrease or eliminate the losses associated with converting thermal energy to other forms, such as electric. The following work describes possible system designs and components that can be utilized to transfer the thermal energy harvested at the nose of the aircraft to internal components for direct thermal actuation of a reconfigurable wing structure. Previously reported topology optimized heat collectors, vehicle trajectories, and the deployment mechanism are combined with the presented analytical model of a heat pipe for a system level model used to optimize the system based on weight and the desired wing deployment time.

Abstract: In order to study ornithopter flight and to improve a dynamic model of flapping propulsion, a series of tests are conducted on a flapping-wing blimp. The blimp is designed and constructed from mylar plastic and balsa wood as a test platform for aerodynamics and flight dynamics. The blimp, 2.3 meters long and 420 gram mass, is propelled by its flapping wings. Due to buoyancy the wings have no lift requirement so that the distinction between lift and propulsion can be analyzed in a flight platform at low flight speeds. The blimp is tested using a Vicon motion tracking system and various initial conditions are tested including accelerating flight from standstill, decelerating from an initial speed higher than its steady state, and from its steady-state speed but disturbed in pitch angle. Test results are used to estimate parameters in a coupled quasi-steady aerodynamics/Newtonian flight dynamics model. This model is then analyzed using Floquet theory to determine local dynamic modes and stability. It is concluded that the dynamic model adequately describes the vehicle's nonlinear behavior near the steady-state velocity and that the vehicle's linearized modes are akin to those of a fixed-wing aircraft.

Watson) growth in a future climate with increased pest activity requires an understanding of the natural variability of quantitative resistance to disease. Foliar and bark secondary metabolites from different lodgepole pine provenances (populations) were quantified and correlated with severity of foliar diseases caused by Lophodermella spp. (Lophodermella concolor (Dearn.) Darker or Lophodermella montivaga Petre.) or Elytroderma deformans (Wier) Darker and bark diseases caused by Elytro- derma or Endocronartium harknessii (J.P. Moore) Y. Hiratsuka. Greater foliar concentrations of lignin, tannins, and some phenolics were associated with increased resistance to single or multiple foliar pathogens. Bark secondary metabolites lev- els were generally unassociated with resistance to bark diseases. Provenances appearing to originate in ecosystems where lodgepole pine are not the dominant species generally were more susceptible to foliar diseases and had less foliar defense- associated compounds than trees from areas where pines were the dominant species, yet clear trends proved to be elusive. Regardless, pine provenances with greater foliar levels of identified defense-associated compounds should be preferred seed sources for replanting forests in areas in which foliar disease is expected to be increasingly prevalent. Abstract: (Abridged) We present maps for various Galactic longitudes and latitudes at 1.4 GHz, which is the frequency where deep SKA surveys are proposed. The maps are about 1.5 deg in size and have an angular resolution of about 1.6 arcsec. We analyse the maps in terms of their probability density functions (PDFs) and structure functions. Total intensity emission is more smooth in the plane than at high latitudes due to the different contributions from the regular and random magnetic field. The high latitude fields show more extended polarized emission and RM structures than those in the plane, where patchy emission structures on very small scales dominate. The RM PDFs in the plane are close to Gaussians, but clearly deviate from that at high latitudes. The RM structure functions show smaller amplitudes and steeper slopes towards high latitudes. These results emerge from the fact that much more turbulent cells are passed through by the line-of-sights in the plane. Although the simulated random magnetic field components distribute in 3D, the magnetic field spectrum extracted from the structure functions of RMs conforms to 2D in the plane and approaches 3D at high latitudes. This is partly related to the outer scale of the turbulent magnetic field, but mainly to the different lengths of the line-of-sights.

Abstract: This article describes the development of engineered composite skins for morphing aircraft applications. Some of these applications suggest that materials with low in-plane stiffness and relatively high out-of-plane stiffness may be required. To this end, a two-step design process has been developed in order to synthesize skins to meet these requirements. The first step in the process is to determine bulk material properties for the skin and the layout of attachments between the skin and underlying substructure. This results in a distribution of bulk properties across the skin. The second step utilizes these property values as constraints to match the found bulk property in a multi-phase material optimization in order to determine the layout of a set of microscopic multi-phase material unit cells. As a first attempt, a 2D engineered skin design using a proposed two-step process is demonstrated in this article, and material fabrication process using a rapid prototyping (RP) technique and test result are discussed.

Abstract: The field of psychology has a long history of attempting to make its basic science relevant to the analysis and solution of social problems. Some psychologists claim that it has been successful at this goal, but others are not convinced. Historically, the field has followed a linear model in its attempts at being relevant: Basic science is somehow developed first, and later someone comes along to apply it to solve problems in real-world settings. This model is now undergoing serious reconsideration in the physical and biological sciences. An alternative model in which science and practice develop seamlessly is represented in the remarkable career of Louis Pasteur. This article discusses both of these models in the context of psychological science and practice. Three fundamental principles underlying Pasteur's way of doing science and practice are presented. Adopting a Pasteurian framework should help resolve at least some of the debates about our science and practice linkage, but this will require a change in how professionals function and how future generations of professionals are trained. Suggestions are presented for making psychology more Pasteurian to help it achieve its stated goal “as a science, as a profession, and as a means of promoting human welfare.”

Abstract: We present a radio continuum study of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) DA 495 (G65.7+1.2), including images of total intensity and linear polarization from 408 to 10550 MHz based on the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey and observations with the Effelsberg 100-m Radio Telescope. Removal of flux density contributions from a superimposed \ion{H}{2} region and from compact extragalactic sources reveals a break in the spectrum of DA 495 at 1.3 GHz, with a spectral index ${\alpha}={-0.45 \pm 0.20}$ below the break and ${\alpha}={-0.87 \pm 0.10}$ above it (${S}_\nu \propto{\nu^{\alpha}}$). The spectral break is more than three times lower in frequency than the lowest break detected in any other PWN. The break in the spectrum is likely the result of synchrotron cooling, and DA 495, at an age of $\sim$20,000 yr, may have evolved from an object similar to the Vela X nebula, with a similarly energetic pulsar. We find a magnetic field of $\sim$1.3 mG inside the nebula. After correcting for the resulting high internal rotation measure, the magnetic field structure is quite simple, resembling the inner part of a dipole field projected onto the plane of the sky, although a toroidal component is likely also present. The dipole field axis, which should be parallel to the spin axis of the putative pulsar, lies at an angle of ${\sim}50\degr$ east of the North Celestial Pole and is pointing away from us towards the south-west. The upper limit for the radio surface brightness of any shell-type supernova remnant emission around DA 495 is $\Sigma_{1 GHz} \sim 5.4 \times 10^{-23}$ OAWatt m$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ (assuming a radio spectral index of $\alpha = -0.5$), lower than the faintest shell-type remnant known to date., Comment: 25 pages, accepted by ApJ

Abstract: Context: Linear polarization of Galactic synchrotron emission provides valuable information on the Galactic magnetic field and on the properties of the Galactic magneto-ionic medium. Polarized high-latitude Galactic emission is the major foreground for polarization studies of the cosmic microwave background. Aims: We present a new southern-sky ë21 cm linear polarization survey, which complements the recent ë21 cm DRAO northern sky polarization data. Methods: We used a 30-m telescope located at Villa Elisa/Argentina to map the southern sky simultaneously in continuum and linear polarization. Results: We present a fully sampled map of linearly polarized emission at ë21 cm of the southern sky for declinations between -10° and -90°. The angular resolution of the survey is 36' and its sensitivity is 15 mK (rms-noise) in Stokes U and Q. The survey's zero-level has been adjusted to that of the recent DRAO 1.4 GHz linear polarization survey by comparing data in the region of overlap between -10° and -27°. Conclusions: The polarized southern sky at 1.4 GHz shows large areas with smooth low-level emission almost uncorrelated to total intensities indicating that Faraday rotation originating in the Galactic interstellar medium along the line of sight is significant at 1.4 GHz. The southern sky is much less contaminated by local foreground features than is the northern sky. Thus high-frequency observations of polarized cosmic microwave emission are expected to be less affected. Abstract: Gust alleviation and flutter suppression are essential elements of an effective fly-by-feel system. Knowledge of real-time forces and moments can have huge effect on designing an effective controller for flutter suppression and gust rejection. One unique method of predicting forces and moments is to use distributed arrays of artificial hair sensors that are capable of sensing the environment and therefore capturing important flow features. In this paper, the local flow measurement from the artificial hair sensor is used with feed-forward neural network to predict the aerodynamic parameters (angle of attack, freestream velocity, lifte coefficient and moment coefficient per unit span, and flap angle) on an airfoil containing control surface. These aerodynamic parameters can be combined with the airfoil’s physical parameters to predict the real time lift and moment. Also, the effect of artificial hair sensor integration location on prediction of aerodynamic parameters is studied.

Abstract: (abridged). We outline LBCS (the LOFAR Long-Baseline Calibrator Survey), whose aim is to identify sources suitable for calibrating the highest-resolution observations made with the International LOFAR Telescope, which include baselines >1000 km. Suitable sources must contain significant correlated flux density (50-100mJy) at frequencies around 110--190~MHz on scales of a few hundred mas. At least for the 200--300-km international baselines, we find around 1 suitable calibrator source per square degree over a large part of the northern sky, in agreement with previous work. This should allow a randomly selected target to be successfully phase calibrated on the international baselines in over 50% of cases. Products of the survey include calibrator source lists and fringe-rate and delay maps of wide areas -- typically a few degrees -- around each source. The density of sources with significant correlated flux declines noticeably with baseline length over the range 200--600~km, with good calibrators on the longest baselines appearing only at the rate of 0.5 per square degree. Coherence times decrease from 1--3 minutes on 200-km baselines to about 1 minute on 600-km baselines, suggesting that ionospheric phase variations contain components with scales of a few hundred kilometres. The longest median coherence time, at just over 3 minutes, is seen on the DE609 baseline, which at 227km is close to being the shortest. We see median coherence times of between 80 and 110 seconds on the four longest baselines (580--600~km), and about 2 minutes for the other baselines. The success of phase transfer from calibrator to target is shown to be influenced by distance, in a manner that suggests a coherence patch at 150-MHz of the order of 1 degree., Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics. Abstract: The new generation of low-frequency radio telescopes, such as the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR: a Square Kilometre Array-low pathfinder), provides advancements in our capability of probing Galactic magnetism through low-frequency polarimetry. Maps of diffuse polarized radio emission and Faraday rotation can be used to infer properties of, and trace structure in, the magnetic fields in the ISM. However, to date very little of the sky has been probed at high angular and Faraday depth resolution. We observed a 5x5 degree region centred on the nearby galaxy IC342 using LOFAR in the frequency range 115-178 MHz at 4 arcmin resolution and performed Faraday tomography to detect foreground Galactic polarized synchrotron emission separated by Faraday depth (different amounts of Faraday rotation). Our Faraday depth cube shows rich polarized structure, with up to 30 K of polarized emission at 150 MHz. We detect two overlapping diffuse polarized features that are clearly separated in Faraday depth. Faraday-thick structures at such low frequencies would be too strongly depolarized to explain the observations and are therefore rejected. Only Faraday thin structures will not be strongly depolarized; producing such structures requires localized variations in the ratio of synchrotron emissivity to Faraday depth per unit distance, which can arise from several physical phenomena, such as a transition between regions of ionized and neutral gas. We conclude that the observed polarized emission is Faraday thin, and propose that the emission originates from two neutral clouds in the local ISM. We have modeled the Faraday rotation for this line of sight and estimated that the line of sight component of magnetic field of the local ISM for this direction varies between -0.86 and +0.12 uG. Abstract: (Abridged) We constrain simulated all-sky maps in total intensity, linear polarization, and rotation measure (RM) by observations. We test a number of large-scale magnetic field configurations and take the properties of the warm interstellar medium into account. From a comparison of simulated and observed maps we are able to constrain the regular large-scale Galactic magnetic field in the disk and the halo of the Galaxy. The local regular field is 2 microG and the average random field is about 3 microG. The known local excess of synchrotron emission originating either from enhanced CR electrons or random magnetic fields is able to explain the observed high-latitude synchrotron emission. The thermal electron model (NE2001) in conjunction with a proper filling factor accounts for the observed optically thin thermal emission and low frequency absorption by optically thick emission. A coupling factor between thermal electrons and the random magnetic field component is proposed, which in addition to the small filling factor of thermal electrons increases small-scale RM fluctuations and thus accounts for the observed depolarization at 1.4 GHz. We conclude that an axisymmetric magnetic disk field configuration with reversals inside the solar circle fits available observations best. Abstract: Context. G156.2+5.7 is a large supernova remnant (SNR) first discovered in the ROSAT X-ray survey due to its exceptional high X-ray brightness. Subsequently detailed X-ray, optical and Ha studies of this SNR were made, but radio observations are rare because of its low surface brightness and large size. Aims. Radio continuum and polarization images of the SNR G156.2+5.7 at A6 cm are presented for the first time to be discussed in the context with available data to investigate its physical properties. Methods. The SNR G156.2+5.7 was observed with the Urumqi 25 m telescope in radio continuum and linear polarization. The results are analyzed together with 11 cm and 21 cm maps previously obtained with the Effelsberg 100 m telescope and compared with a broad-band X-ray ROSAT image, 100 μm infrared radiation data and a Hα emission map. Results. We obtained an integrated flux density for G156.2+5.7 of S 6 cm = 2.5 ± 0.5 Jy. The spectral index of the integrated emission is a = -0.48 ± 0.08 (S ∼ v α ) between λ74 cm and λ6 cm excluding compact radio sources. We also obtained a spectral index map, which shows little variation between the shells and the central area of the SNR. This is consistent with the constant integrated flux density spectrum. Highly polarized radio emission has been detected from the SNR shell, but also from a central patch, which probably originates in the front part of the spherical SNR shell. We derived the distribution of rotation measure from polarization data at λ1 1 cm and λ6 cm and found RM gradients of opposite direction in the SNR shell. Conclusions. The SNR G156.2+5.7 is unusual by its exceptionally high X-ray brightness and very low surface-brightness in the radio range. The magnetic field is very well ordered along the shell periphery as expected for a compressed ambient magnetic field. A toroidal magnetic field component is indicated by the RM distribution.

Abstract: Newly emerging interest in control processes is leading to investigations of control as a social influence process rather than a stable personality trait variable. The current study investigated the relation between two social control processes, health-controlling behavior (HCB) and encouragement of reliance on others (other-reliance encouragement: ORE), and relationship satisfaction in samples of chronic pain patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS: N = 51) and their partners. The uncertainty of their illness (i.e., unexplained etiology, difficult diagnosis, and poor prognosis) may sensitize fibromyalgia patients to their partner's social control behaviors. The results of regression analyses indicated that the effects of a partner's HCB and ORE were moderated by patients' illness uncertainty and bodily pain. When pain and uncertainty were at low levels, HCB and ORE were related to poorer relationship satisfaction, but when pain and uncertainty were at higher levels, HCB was positively related to patient relationship and ORE showed a trend toward a similar pattern of effects. These findings suggest that control can have positive effects, but these are contingent on patients' physical conditions. Implications of these results for further research and therapeutic interventions are discussed.

Abstract: Context. Observing Jupiter's synchrotron emission from the Earth remains today the sole method to scrutinize the distribution and dynamical behavior of the ultra energetic electrons magnetically trapped around the planet (because in-situ particle data are limited in the inner magnetosphere). Aims. We perform the first resolved and low-frequency imaging of the synchrotron emission with LOFAR at 127 MHz. The radiation comes from low energy electrons (~1-30 MeV) which map a broad region of Jupiter's inner magnetosphere. Methods (see article for complete abstract) Results. The first resolved images of Jupiter's radiation belts at 127-172 MHz are obtained along with total integrated flux densities. They are compared with previous observations at higher frequencies and show a larger extent of the synchrotron emission source (>=4 $R_J$). The asymmetry and the dynamic of east-west emission peaks are measured and the presence of a hot spot at lambda_III=230 {\deg} $\pm$ 25 {\deg}. Spectral flux density measurements are on the low side of previous (unresolved) ones, suggesting a low-frequency turnover and/or time variations of the emission spectrum. Conclusions. LOFAR is a powerful and flexible planetary imager. The observations at 127 MHz depict an extended emission up to ~4-5 planetary radii. The similarities with high frequency results reinforce the conclusion that: i) the magnetic field morphology primarily shapes the brightness distribution of the emission and ii) the radiating electrons are likely radially and latitudinally distributed inside about 2 $R_J$. Nonetheless, the larger extent of the brightness combined with the overall lower flux density, yields new information on Jupiter's electron distribution, that may shed light on the origin and mode of transport of these particles., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (27/11/2015) - abstract edited because of limited characters

Abstract: Fly by feel is a concept in which distributed sensors and actuators are integrated on an aerial system for state awareness or sensation of the environment, and make use of distributed control to increase the system maneuverability, stability and safety. Artificial hair sensors are good candidates as sensors for the fly by feel concept because they are lightweight, have low manufacturing costs and can easily be integrated on the surface of air-vehicle without affecting the flow. We investigate an application of artificial hair sensors considering its capability of measuring the local flow velocity combined with a Feedforward Artificial Neural Network to predict the aerodynamic quantities such as lift coefficient, moment coefficient, angle of attack and free-stream velocity in real-time. These quantities, when combined with the physical and unsteady aerodynamics parameters, will make a framework for designing and implementing an active controller for gust alleviation in a pitch and plunge airfoil system.Copyright © 2015 by ASME

Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of optimization for multifunctional nanocomposites. A carbon nanotubeepoxy composite is optimized for maximum resistance change and minimum strain energy. Analysis uses a finite element method and includes the coupled physics of mechanics, electrostatics, and piezoresistivity. The problem is solved first for minimum strain energy, then two resistance maximization problems are solved. For all optimization, sensitivities are obtained analytically. After solving the individual problems a weighted sum approach is used in the multi-objective optimization of both minimizing the strain energy and maximizing the resistance change. Comments are made as to the effect of the topology optimization method as a design tool, on the shape of the optimized cross sections, and on the possible extensions on using the coupled physics topology optimization algorithm.Copyright © 2015 by ASME

Abstract: International audience; Faraday rotation measurements using the current and next generation of low-frequency radio telescopes will provide a powerful probe of astronomical magnetic fields. However, achieving the full potential of these measurements requires accurate removal of the time-variable ionospheric Faraday rotation contribution. We present ionFR, a code that calculates the amount of ionospheric Faraday rotation for a specific epoch, geographic location, and line-of-sight. ionFR uses a number of publicly available, GPS-derived total electron content maps and the most recent release of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field. We describe applications of this code for the calibration of radio polarimetric observations, and demonstrate the high accuracy of its modeled ionospheric Faraday rotations using LOFAR pulsar observations. These show that we can accurately determine some of the highest-precision pulsar rotation measures ever achieved. Precision rotation measures can be used to monitor rotation measure variations – either intrinsic or due to the changing line-of-sight through the interstellar medium. This calibration is particularly important for nearby sources, where the ionosphere can contribute a significant fraction of the observed rotation measure. We also discuss planned improvements to ionFR, as well as the importance of ionospheric Faraday rotation calibration for the emerging generation of low-frequency radio telescopes, such as the SKA and its pathfinders.

98. Topology optimization for the design of folding liquid crystal elastomer actuators

Abstract: Aligned liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are capable of undergoing large reversible shape change in response to thermal stimuli and may act as actuators for many potential applications such as self-assembly and deployment of micro devices. Recent advances in LCE patterning tools have demonstrated sub-millimetre control of director orientation, enabling the preparation of materials with arbitrarily complex director fields. However, without design tools to connect the 2D director pattern with the activated 3D shape, LCE design relies on intuition and trial and error. Here we present a design methodology to generate reliable folding in monolithic LCEs designed with topology optimization. The distributions of order/disorder and director orientations are optimized so that the remotely actuated deformation closely matches a target deformation for origami folding. The optimal design exhibits a strategy to counteract the mechanical frustration that may lead to an undesirable deformation, such as anti-clastic bending. Multi-hinge networks were developed using insights from the optimal hinge designs and were demonstrated through the fabrication and reversible actuation of a self-folding box. Topology optimization provides an important step towards leveraging the opportunities afforded by LCE patterning into functional designs.

Abstract: Reconfigurable structures based on origami design are useful for multi-functional applications, such as deployable shelters, solar array packaging, and tunable antennas. Origami provides a framework to decompose a complex 2D to 3D transformation into a series of folding operations about predetermined fold lines. Recent optimization toolsets have begun to enable a systematic search of the design space to not only optimize geometry, but mechanical performance criteria as well. However, selecting optimum fold patterns for large folding operations is challenging as geometric nonlinearity influences fold choice throughout the evolution. The present work investigates strategies for design optimization to incorporate the current and future configurations of the structure in the performance evaluation. An optimization method, combined with finite element analysis, is used to distribute mechanical properties within an initially flat structure to determine optimal crease patterns to achieve desired motions. Abstract: Origami structures morph between 2D and 3D conformations along predetermined fold lines that efficiently program the form of the structure and show potential for many engineering applications. However, the enormity of the design space and the complex relationship between origami-based geometries and engineering metrics place a severe limitation on design strategies based on intuition. The presented work proposes a systematic design method using topology optimization to distribute foldline properties within a reference crease pattern, adding or removing folds through optimization, for a mechanism design. Optimization techniques and mechanical analysis are co-utilized to identify an action origami building block and determine the optimal network connectivity between multiple actuators. Foldable structures are modeled as pin-joint truss structures with additional constraints on fold, or dihedral, angles. A continuous tuning of foldline stiffness leads to a rigid-to-compliant transformation of the local foldline property, the combination of which results in origami crease design optimization. The performance of a designed origami mechanism is evaluated in 3D by applying prescribed forces and finding displacements at set locations. A constraint on the number of foldlines is used to tune design complexity, highlighting the value-add of an optimization approach. Together, these results underscore that the optimization of function, in addition to shape, is a promising approach to origami design and motivates the further development of function-based origami design tools.
