The low surface brightness galaxy HIPASS1126-72 was detected in the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS). The galaxy was previously listed in the Southern Galaxy Catalogue under the name SGC1124.87221. This galaxy represents a class of galaxies that we will readily detect in the HIPASS survey, which have low surface brightness in the optical, but are easily detectable in neutral hydrogen.

The Northern HIPASS Optical/Infrared Catalogue (NOIRCAT) consists of optical/near-infrared identification of the sources found in the Northern HIPASS catalogue, NHICAT [1]. NHICAT and NOIRCAT have sampled the entire region of sky between the declinations of +2◦ and +25.5◦. Of the 1002 sources in NHICAT, 655 have previously-observed optical counterparts with matching optical velocities. Here, we present the optical/near-infrared properties of these matches.

We have conducted an HI 21 cm emission-line survey using the Parkes 20cm multibeam instrument and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) of six loose groups of galaxies chosen to be analogs to the Local Group. The goal of this survey is to make a census of the HI-rich galaxies and high-velocity clouds (HVCs) within these groups and compare these populations with those in the Local Group. The Parkes observations covered the entire volume of each group with a rms M(HI) sensitivity of 4-10x10^5 M(sun) per 3.3 km/s channel. All potential sources detected in the Parkes data were confirmed with ATCA observations at ~2' resolution and the same M(sun) sensitivity. All the confirmed sources have associated stellar counterparts; no starless HI clouds--HVC analogs--were found in the six groups. In this paper, we present a description of the survey parameters, its sensitivity and completeness. Using the population of compact HVCs (CHVCs) around the Milky Way as a template coupled with the detailed knowledge of our survey parameters, we infer that our non-detection of CHVC analogs implies that, if similar populations exist in the six groups studied, the CHVCs must be clustered within 90 kpc of group galaxies, with average M(HI) < 4x10^5 M(sun) at the 95% confidence level. The corollary is that the same must apply to Milky Way CHVCs. This is consistent with our previous results from a smaller sample of groups, and in accordance with recent observational and theoretical constraints from other authors. We have conducted a wide-field neutral hydrogen (HI) survey of 16 galaxy groups, as part of the Group Evolution Multiwavelength Study (GEMS). We found 204 HI detections in the sixteen groups, and of these, 10 were previously uncatalogued, and 11 were in optical catalogues, but had no redshifts. We find that >98% of the neutral hydrogen mass we detect is associated with galaxies. The majority of our HI detections could be matched with an optically visible galaxy, however in the NGC 3783 galaxy group we find an HI cloud that appears to have no stellar emission associated with it. The origin and nature of this HI cloud is unclear. We look at the properties of all the groups combined, and find that the HI content of a galaxy group depends on its X-ray properties, such that those groups with extended X-ray emission tend to have less HI than those with no X-ray emission.

The future of cm and m-wave astronomy lies with the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a telescope under development by a consortium of 17 countries that will be 50 times more sensitive than any existing radio facility. Most of the key science for the SKA will be addressed through large-area imaging of the Universe at frequencies from a few hundred MHz to a few GHz. The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) is a technology demonstrator aimed in the mid-frequency range, and achieves instantaneous wide-area imaging through the development and deployment of phased-array feed systems on parabolic reflectors. The large field-of-view makes ASKAP an unprecedented synoptic telescope that will make substantial advances in SKA key science. ASKAP will be located at the Murchison Radio Observatory in inland Western Australia, one of the most radio-quiet locations on the Earth and one of two sites selected by the international community as a potential location for the SKA. In this paper, we outline an ambitious science program for ASKAP, examining key science such as understanding the evolution, formation and population of galaxies including our own, understanding the magnetic Universe, revealing the transient radio sky and searching for gravitational waves., Accepted for publication in PASA. 14 pages, 6 figures

A common feature of hierarchical galaxy formation models is the process of "inverse" morphological transformation: a bulge dominated galaxy accretes a gas disk, dramatically reducing the system's bulge-to-disk mass ratio. During their formation, present day galaxies may execute many such cycles across the Hubble diagram. A good candidate for such a "hermaphrodite" galaxy is NGC 3108: a dust-lane early-type galaxy which has a large amount of HI gas distributed in a large scale disk. We present narrow band H_alpha and R-band imaging, and compare the results with the HI distribution. The emission is in two components: a nuclear bar and an extended disk component which coincides with the HI distribution. This suggests that a stellar disk is currently being formed out of the HI gas. The spatial distributions of the H_alpha and HI emission and the HII regions are consistent with a barred spiral structure, extending some 20 kpc in radius. We measure an extinction- corrected SFR of 0.42 Msun/yr. The luminosity function of the HII regions is similar to other spiral galaxies, with a power law index of -2.1, suggesting that the star formation mechanism is similar to other spiral galaxies. We measured the current disk mass and find that it is too massive to have been formed by the current SFR over the last few Gyr. It is likely that the SFR in NGC 3108 was higher in the past. With the current SFR, the disk in NGC 3108 will grow to be ~6.2x10^9 Msun in stellar mass within the next 5.5 Gyr. While this is substantial, the disk will be insignificant compared with the large bulge mass: the final stellar mass disk-to-bulge ratio will be ~0.02. Interactions between galaxies are common and are an important factor in determining their physical properties such as position along the Hubble sequence and star-formation rate. There are many possible galaxy interaction mechanisms, including merging, ram-pressure stripping, gas compression, gravitational interaction and cluster tides. The relative importance of these mechanisms is often not clear, as their strength depends on poorly known parameters such as the density, extent and nature of the massive dark halos that surround galaxies. A nearby example of a galaxy interaction where the mechanism is controversial is that between our own Galaxy and two of its neighbours -- the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Here we present the first results of a new HI survey which provides a spectacular view of this interaction. In addition to the previously known Magellanic Stream, which trails 100 degrees behind the Clouds, the new data reveal a counter-stream which lies in the opposite direction and leads the motion of the Clouds. This result supports the gravitational model in which leading and trailing streams are tidally torn from the body of the Magellanic Clouds.

Galaxy groups have been under-studied relative to their richer counterparts -- clusters. The Group Evolution Multiwavelength Study (GEMS) aims to redress some the balance. Here we describe the GEMS sample selection and resulting sample of 60 nearby (distance < 130 Mpc) galaxy groups and our multiwavelength dataset of X-ray, optical and HI imaging. ROSAT X-ray images of each group are presented. GEMS also utilizes near-infrared imaging from the 2MASS survey and optical spectra from the 6dFGS. These observational data are complemented by mock group catalogues generated from the latest LCDM simulations with gas physics included. We derive observed Halpha and R band luminosity densities of an HI-selected sample of nearby galaxies using the SINGG sample to be l_Halpha' = (9.4 +/- 1.8)e38 h_70 erg s^-1 Mpc^-3 for Halpha and l_R' = (4.4 +/- 0.7)e37 h_70 erg s^-1 A^-1 Mpc^-3 in the R band. This R band luminosity density is approximately 70% of that found by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This leads to a local star formation rate density of log(SFRD) = -1.80 +0.13/-0.07(random) +/- 0.03(systematic) + log(h_70) after applying a mean internal extinction correction of 0.82 magnitudes. The gas cycling time of this sample is found to be t_gas = 7.5 +1.3/-2.1 Gyr, and the volume-averaged equivalent width of the SINGG galaxies is EW(Halpha) = 28.8 +7.2/-4.7 A (21.2 +4.2/-3.5 A without internal dust correction). As with similar surveys, these results imply that SFRD(z) decreases drastically from z ~ 1.5 to the present. A comparison of the dynamical masses of the SINGG galaxies evaluated at their optical limits with their stellar and HI masses shows significant evidence of downsizing: the most massive galaxies have a larger fraction of their mass locked up in stars compared with HI, while the opposite is true for less massive galaxies. We show that the application of the Kennicutt star formation law to a galaxy having the median orbital time at the optical limit of this sample results in a star formation rate decay with cosmic time similar to that given by the SFRD(z) evolution. This implies that the SFRD(z) evolution is primarily due to the secular evolution of galaxies, rather than interactions or mergers. The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey (AGES) is one of several HI surveys utilising the new Arecibo L-band Feed Array (ALFA) fitted to the 305m radio telescope at Arecibo. The survey is specifically designed to investigate various galactic environments to higher sensitivity, higher velocity resolution and higher spatial resolution than previous fully sampled, 21 cm multibeam surveys. The emphasis is on making detailed observations of nearby objects although the large system bandwidth (100 MHz) will allow us to quantify the HI properties over a large instantaneous velocity range. In this paper we describe the survey and its goals and present the results from the precursor observations of a 5 degree x 1 degree region containing the nearby (~10 Mpc) NGC 628 group. We have detected all the group galaxies in the region including the low mass (M{HI}~10^7Mo) dwarf, dw0137+1541 (Briggs, 1986). The fluxes and velocities for these galaxies compare well with previously published data. There is no intra-group neutral gas detected down to a limiting column density of 2x10^{18}cm^{-2}. We examine a possible supergroup in the direction of the Eridanus constellation using 6dF Galaxy Survey second data release (6dFGS DR2) positions and velocities together with 2MASS and HyperLEDA photometry. We perform a friends-of-friends analysis to determine which galaxies are associated with each substructure before examining the properties of the constituent galaxies. The structure is made up of three individual groups that are likely to merge to form a cluster of mass 7x10^13 Msolar. We conclude that this structure is a supergroup. We also examine the colours, morphologies and luminosities of the galaxies in the region with respect to their local projected surface density. We find that the colours of the galaxies redden with increasing density, the median luminosities are brighter with increasing environmental density and the morphologies of the galaxies show a strong morphology-density relation. The colours and luminosities of the galaxies in the supergroup are already similar to those of galaxies in clusters, however the supergroup contains more late-type galaxies, consistent with its lower projected surface density. Due to the velocity dispersion of the groups in the supergroup, which are lower than those of clusters, we conclude that the properties of the constituent galaxies are likely to be a result of merging or strangulation processes in groups outlying this structure., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the largest catalogue to date of optical counterparts for HI radio-selected galaxies, Hopcat. Of the 4315 HI radio-detected sources from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (Hipass) catalogue, we find optical counterparts for 3618 (84%) galaxies. Of these, 1798 (42%) have confirmed optical velocities and 848 (20%) are single matches without confirmed velocities. Some galaxy matches are members of galaxy groups. From these multiple galaxy matches, 714 (16%) have confirmed optical velocities and a further 258 (6%) galaxies are without confirmed velocities. For 481 (11%), multiple galaxies are present but no single optical counterpart can be chosen and 216 (5%) have no obvious optical galaxy present. Most of these 'blank fields' are in crowded fields along the Galactic plane or have high extinctions. Isolated 'Dark galaxy' candidates are investigated using an extinction cut of ABj < 1 mag and the blank fields category. Of the 3692 galaxies with an ABj extinction < 1 mag, only 13 are also blank fields. Of these, 12 are eliminated either with follow-up Parkes observations or are in crowded fields. The remaining one has a low surface brightness optical counterpart. Hence, no isolated optically dark galaxies have been found within the limits of the Hipass survey., 10 pages, 15 figures, MNRAS (in press)

An extended HI cloud (VIRGOHI 21) with an HI mass of $\sim10^8$ M$_{\odot}$ and no apparent optical counterpart was recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. In order to understand the origin of physical properties of apparently isolated HI clouds like the VIRGOHI21, we numerically investigate physical properties of tidal HI debris that were formed by galaxy-galaxy interaction in clusters of galaxies. Our hydrodynamical simulations demonstrate that tidal debris with total HI masses of $10^8-10^9$ M$_{\odot}$ can have (1) wide HI velocity widths ($>200$ km s$^{-1}$), (2) a small mass fraction of stars ($\sim$10%), and (3) a mean $B$-band surface brightness of the stellar components fainter than 30 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. These results suggest that the VIRGOHI21, which lies at a projected distance of $\sim$ 150 kpc from the one-armed, HI-rich spiral galaxy M99 (NGC 4254), is tidal debris. We propose that the comparison between the simulated and the observed velocity fields of HI clouds allows us to better understand their nature and origin (e.g., whether they are just tidal debris or ``dark galaxies'' that have HI gas only and are embedded by dark matter halos). Details are presented of the HI Jodrell All Sky Survey (HIJASS). HIJASS is a blind neutral hydrogen (HI) survey of the northern sky, being conducted using the multibeam receiver on the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank. HIJASS covers the velocity range -3500 km/s to 10000 km/s with a velocity resolution of 18.1 km/s and a spatial positional accuracy of ~2.5 arcmin. Thus far about 1115 sq deg have been surveyed. We describe the methods of detecting galaxies within the HIJASS data and of measuring their HI parameters. The properties of the resulting HI-selected sample of galaxies are described. Of the 222 sources so far confirmed, 170 (77 per cent) are clearly associated with a previously catalogued galaxy. A further 23 sources (10 percent) lie close (within 6 arcmin) to a previously catalogued galaxy for which no previous redshift exists. A further 29 sources (13 per cent) do not appear to be associated with any previously catalogued galaxy. The distributions of peak flux, integrated flux, HI mass and cz are discussed. We show, using the HIJASS data, that HI self-absorption is a significant, but often overlooked, effect in galaxies with large inclination angles to the line of sight. Properly accounting for it could increase the derived HI mass density of the local Universe by at least 25 per cent. The effect this will have on the shape of the HI Mass Function will depend on how self-absorption affects galaxies of different morphological types and HI masses. We also show that galaxies with small inclinations to the line of sight may also be excluded from HI-selected samples, since many such galaxies will have observed linewidths which are too narrow for them to be distinguished from narrow-band radio frequency interference., Accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 22 pages, 13 figures

This catalogue forms the largest uniform catalogue of local HI sources compiled to date, giving a new perspective on the local universe. Using the data of the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS), covering the entire sky δ < +25° with a velocity range -1280 → 12,700 km s-1, the southern region of the survey (δ < +2°) has now been searched to full survey depth yielding ∼4500 sources. Issues presently under examination include the HI structure and dynamics of the local universe, the HI mass function, galaxy groups and clusters, the 2-point correlation function and the Tully-Fisher relation.

A sample of HI massive galaxies (M HI > 2 x 1010 M ⊙) is selected from HIPASS. High resolution HI observations were made to investigate the general characteristics of these galaxies, including their HI structure and dynamics, and to determine their stellar counterpart. All galaxies detected in the follow-up matched with an optical counterpart, and no primordial HI clouds were found.

A new, sensitive HI survey is underway with a multibeam receiver on the Parkes telescope. The aim of the HI Parkes All-Sky Survey (HIPASS) is to blindly survey the southern sky out to a velocity of 12700 km s−1. In this paper, we describe the parameters of the survey, summarise the current status, and present a collection of preliminary results on the Magellanic Clouds, new dwarf galaxies discovered in the Centaurus A group, and the HI mass function. These results have implications for our understanding of the population of nearby galaxies.

We have commenced a 21-cm survey of the entire southern sky (��< 0 degrees, -1200 km/s < v < 12700 km/s) which is ''blind'', i.e. unbiased by previous optical information. In the present paper we report on the results of a pilot project which is based on data from this all-sky survey. The project was carried out on an area of 600 square degrees centred on the nearby Centaurus A (Cen A) group of galaxies at a mean velocity of v ~ 500 km/s. This was recently the subject of a separate and thorough optical survey. We found 10 new group members to add to the 21 galaxies already known in the Cen A group: five of these are previously uncatalogued galaxies, while five were previously catalogued but not known to be associated with the group. We found optical counterparts for all the HI detections, most of them intrinsically very faint low surface brightness dwarfs. The new group members add approximately 6% to the HI mass of the group and 4% to its light. The HI mass function, derived from all the known group galaxies in the interval 10^7 \Msun of HI to 10^9 \Msun of HI, has a faint-end slope of 1.30 +/- 0.15, allowing us to rule out a slope of 1.7 at 95% confidence. Even if the number in the lowest mass bin is increased by 50%, the slope only increases to 1.45 +/- 0.15., 19 pages Latex, 6 figures (Fig. 2 in four parts, Fig.5 in two parts). We present and explore the resolved atomic hydrogen (HI) content of 13 HI-rich and late-type dominated groups denoted `Choirs'. We quantify the HI content of the Choir galaxies with respect to the median of the HI-mass fraction ($f_{\textrm{HI}}$) of their grandparent HIPASS sample. We find that the HI mass fraction of the Choir galaxies is dispersed around the HIPASS median in the range $-1.4 \leq \Delta f_{\textrm{HI}}\textrm{[dex]}\leq 0.7$, from HI-excess to HI-deficient galaxy regime. The HI-excess/HI-deficient galaxies contain more/less than 2.5 times their expected HI content with respect to the HIPASS median. We show and discuss that the environmental processing in Choirs occurs via tidal stripping and galaxy mergers. Our analysis suggests that tidal stripping contributes to the loss of the HI, while galaxy mergers contribute to the enhancement of the HI. Exploring the mid-infrared properties of Choir galaxies we find possible environmental processing in only nine Choir galaxies, which indicates that environmental processing is more perceptible in the HI content than the mid-infrared properties. Moreover, we find that environmental processing occurs in Choir groups regardless of their global environment, whether they are in isolation or in proximity to the denser structures, such as cosmic web filaments. We explore possible scenarios of the Choirs evolution, taking into account their HI content, velocity dispersion, crossing time and their global environment. We conclude that the most likely evolution for the majority of Choir groups is that they will become more compact as their members undergo multiple HI-rich mergers., Comment: 39 pages, 31 figures and 9 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

By analysing a sample of galaxies selected from the HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) to contain more than 2.5 times their expected HI content based on their optical properties, we investigate what drives these HI eXtreme (HIX) galaxies to be so HI-rich. We model the HI kinematics with the Tilted Ring Fitting Code TiRiFiC and compare the observed HIX galaxies to a control sample of galaxies from HIPASS as well as simulated galaxies built with the semi-analytic model Dark Sage. We find that (1) HI discs in HIX galaxies are more likely to be warped and more likely to host HI arms and tails than in the control galaxies, (2) the average HI and average stellar column density of HIX galaxies is comparable to the control sample, (3) HIX galaxies have higher HI and baryonic specific angular momenta than control galaxies, (4) most HIX galaxies live in higher-spin haloes than most control galaxies. These results suggest that HIX galaxies are HI-rich because they can support more HI against gravitational instability due to their high specific angular momentum. The majority of the HIX galaxies inherits their high specific angular momentum from their halo. The HI content of HIX galaxies might be further increased by gas-rich minor mergers. We present the results of our HI survey of six loose groups of galaxies analogous to the Local Group. The survey was conducted using the Parkes telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array to produce a census of all the gas-rich galaxies and analogs to the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) within these groups down to M(HI) < 10^7 M(sun) as a test of models of galaxy formation. We present the HI mass function and halo mass function of the loose groups and show that they are consistent with those of the Local Group. We discuss the possible role of HVCs in solving the ``missing satellite'' problem and discuss the implications of our observations for models of galaxy formation.

We adopt the Web 2.0 paradigm as a mechanism for preparing, editing, delivering and maintaining educational content, and for fostering ongoing innovation in the online education field. We report here on the migration of legacy course materials from PowerPoint slides on CD to a fully online delivery mode for use in the Swinburne Astronomy Online (SAO) program. We chose to adopt a widely used, web based content management system, Drupal, a web based media management system, Coppermine, and our own plug in code. Together, these form the basis of an entirely browser based course development and deployment infrastructure. In this paper, we describe the new Web 2.0 SAO system, the Virtual Cadet, which we developed to simplify content migration, and the SAO Viewer, which is used by students to access the course material. We compare the merits of the PowerPoint and Web 2.0 formats of SAO, and describe the future innovations that are enabled by the move to web based content delivery. The arrival of Web 2.0 empowers content developers by rendering en-mass conversions of legacy content into web based content economically sensible, with potential for enhancing learning and teaching.
